Is there a reliable RDP client to remotely connect to a windows machine for android? I saw a few in the market, most of them are kind of expensive and was wondering if anyone has a input on this.
Thanks.
The app called RemoteRDP works great. The only issue I have run into is occasionally running out of memory when using higher resolutions. I am able to access several Windows 7 machines on the LAN and through an internet connection (behind a router).
Because of the phone's hardware the speed isn't amazing (Especially over 3g of course), and I turn off the option to stream the sound to help minimize lag. You won't be able to watch your slingbox through it (choppy), but you can complete tasks and even copy files to your phone's sd card.

Yeah I was actually looking for software where I could stream my audio library to the Hero, kind of like Orb I guess but not Orb.
Yeah, it is too choppy to work for streaming audio/music...especially over 3g.
Actually, Im surprised how well orb works, I just checked it out for the first time. Only thing that sucks is that it will play in the background but has no taskbar icon and pretty much has to reload every time
Edit: I spoke to soon. It takes for ever to enumerate the contents of my library and half the time says no content found. Im assuming its timing out.
Edit 2: It appears to be indexing my contents, maybe once that completes it will work decent.

FYI, 8gb class 6 micro SD cards are down to $20.. http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Class-microSDHC-Memory-TS8GUSDHC6/dp/B001IAMME8
Use "Gmote" to stream mp3s...
It's a wifi mouse/music controller, and over 3G will allow you to browse your computer's mp3s and stream them. Works GREAT... You'll have to forward port 8889 on your router to your PCs local IP though. I think its 8889. Maybe 8881... Can't remember.
Get SubSonic for your pc/mac/linux. setup the service, and install subsonic on your phone.
WORKS FANTASTIC!
All you music streamed and full bitrate (or less if you choose) and it transcodes on the fly so it works with ALL file extensions. google that ****! lol

It has been awhile since I've used Gmote. Before it didn't allow streaming to play the phone, or at least I didn't remember that it did. The music streaming works great!

Within a LAN, Orb works pretty great. Bitrate stays the same and I even was able to play FLAC!
On 3g, I am not sure yet, but I dont think Ill really use it outside of my home network a lot.
Ill give the other a go later.
I must have missed this thread a couple of days ago.
I picked up PhoneMyPC. I think it was about $10 or so. An app runs on the PC and on the phone to display the screens. No sound support, but it works quite well. I used it while on vacation to email myself files, check a webcam, and enable internet access for my house sitter while I was out of country.
I've been impressed with it so far, mostly because it's fast and easy.

I'm wondering what kind of wifi speeds are you getting out of your prophet?
I can't seem to get more than 11 mbps, although I have not done any tweaking either on access point or on the prophet. Anybody getting higher (and how?)?
You can check the speed of your connection in Settings>WLAN>Main> (look at tx rate)
When I had a 802.11B router I was getting 11mps on my Prophet. Recently I upgraded to an 802.11G router and set it to G only and now when I look at the tx rate it says "auto". So I really have no idea what my transfer rate is although I can confirm that it appears to be running about twice as fast when copying files off the network and streaming video is miles better.
When you say "video streaming" do you refer to viewing videos from the pc on your network, or internet streaming videos?
I haven't tried either, but would be interested in your insight.

Yes I mean viewing videos streamed from my pc to my Prophet via my wifi network. I used a DVD to Pocket PC ripper (I can't remember it's name offhand) and rip my entire DVD collection at the highest setting and save them all to my PC. I can then watch the movies on my Prophet via wifi and it doesn't seem to want to buffer at all. This saves me having to use up space on my SD card. Also at night when I'm in bed it's a fantastic way to catch up on all those gory action films that my wife doesn't want to watch (Kill Bill etc) not to mention at 6am when my 3yr old comes rampaging into the room and climbing on the bed I can put on the Wiggles or similar and hey presto I get another half an hour sleep
I set my router to G only mode and saw that I was getting 24 mbps with my Prophet, I don't know if that is the max or not. I have since changed my router back to b,g auto because the range in G only is fine for in the house, but for long distance B is better.
Thanks guys, that's helpful.
So is it fair to assume that if the router is positioned on auto (b/g) you will get only 11Mbps, and if you set it higher, you may achieve higher speeds?
I mean, my router is set on auto, and I have no way of setting it to g-only, so I am wondering if a new router would improve speeds....
Thanks for your input.
One more thing, How do you guys do that streaming thing? I mean I have a program which lets me see my shared folders on the PC over wifi, and I can open documents easily over the network. But whenever I click an mp3, or (god-forbid) video file, Windows Media either blocks, or says something like 'no parameter'...
What am I doing wrong?
Sorry for my tardy response (you may have already worked this out) but streaming movies with TCPMP rather than Windows Media is the bettter option. So long as you have your network set up (ie. can browse to shared folders on you pc) then it's just a case of within TCPMP "open file" and browsing to the shared area you have on your network that contains your movies .... and play. Likewise for MP3s.
For some reason I cannot get it working the same using Windows Media .... which does not bother me at all because I prefer TCPMP.
Hope this helps ... you you need any more info just ask ... I'll try to be a bit swifter this time
Hey thanks a lot for the answer. I had already tried with TCMPC player and streaming worked splendid... No probs at all...
My only worry for the prophet now is battery time...

You might possibly get a faster through put with G only, but in theory with auto mode it should switch to B mode only when the signal is very weak. I switched my router to G only mode just to verify that my Prophet was capable of G speeds.

hmmm, using orb? slingbox?
i watched today brazil ANNIHILATE japan right from my wizard at work.
I was the hero there today. Seriously.
No problem watching Ghana kick the US's backside around the field with a slingbox and mobile on the wizard. Even used ESPN HD just to see if I could.
reading on the slingbox it says 256Kbps upstream speed required (for out-of-home viewing), how did it show on ur wizard?
Explain how this is possible and what I need to do please?
Orb
I use orb to stream my tv, movies and music to my 8125 while I'm at work. Luckily we have a g based wifi access point that has a decent downstream to get good quality streams set up. Even with EDGE speeds I can only sustain a 60-100kb/sec stream. This is okay for music, but is no good for streaming live TV. You have to set up a "server" which is basically a Windows XP Media Center Edition box with a compatable TV Tuner card. Orb runs a program on your PC that uploads and streams the live tv, or basically any media stored on that PC to anywhere that has internet access. Make sure you setup your firewall to allow the orb desktop client server access. Everything should be golden after that. I recently droped my broadband service and have been leeching off of a neighbor's access point and have noticed some significant deterioration in the quality of the streams I get through orb. I'd reccomend that the PC with the Orb server runing not be connected via wifi for the most unrestricted access to upload bandwidth. Just check out http://www.orb.com for info and how-to set up the PC. On the pocet pc side you just go to the link above and type in your username/pass and select what you want to stream... Works like a charm.

Slingbox works fine over wi-fi. I have my slingbox hooked up to a DSL connection with something like 800k up - I forget actually - and when I go to a local cafe with wi-fi I can watch TV just fine on my MDA, even flipping it on its side to display landscape. It can control my directv PVR just fine.
It'd be hard to follow a soccer match real well, the ball would be hard to see I think.

I get the occasional jerkiness but overall, it does very well. It's impressive enough that I paid the $30 for the remote viewer app. Note that this is using T-Mobile's EDGE network. I don't think the 256 kbps matters a whole lot when the download speed is a lot less than that. I bought the slingbox so I could watch TV from the backyard patio using a laptop but since the PPC app was a free trial download, I figured I'd give it a shot. Now I'm completely hooked. I suppose your mileage may vary given network usage, EDGE speed in your area, blah blah blah etc and so on ad nauseum, but it works great for me.
Hi,
Is anyone successfully using ORB (www.orb.com) and streaming either video content or live TV to their TyTN?
I can stream perfectly but even in full screen landscape mode the picture is still only about the size of a postage stamp in the center of the screen with the rest of the screen black
I have heard of some people using TCPMP from coreplayer, however this is even worse as the screen (and sometimes the entire phone) just freezes within about 2 seconds of the stream starting. Another problem with TCPMP seems to be that it sometimes asks me if I want to overwrite the live.wmv file which suggests that it is downloading it instead of streaming it
Anyway, I'd much rather have it working in WM10 if only the screen would resize it properly.
Another problem is that I can't stream from my WiFi connection, even at home if I want to stream video I have to use GPRS because I get an error on WiFi (using WM10).
Thanks,
Mark
I use Orb very regularly. I use it with WMP10 on my Tytn and I do not experience the problem that you mention.
The only advice I can offer is that perhaps the the downsizing happens automatically as a result of your network speed. You'll notice that when you log into Orb, the very first thing is does is perform a speed test of the network. It is highly likely the result of that test dictates the resolution and bitrate of video that it streams to your device. I get it full screen with no problem. I'm on Cingular's UMTS in the US. Check that speed test and see what speeds it is getting.
As far as the Wi-Fi goes, I wish I could help you. I can also stream with no problems over Wi-fi. At least you know it's not a limitation of Orb or your device.
After reading your comments I decided to trick Orb into thinking that I was on a fast connection.
I loaded the Orb webpage and did the speedtest using wifi, then turned wifi off and started streaming some live TV...
You're right, it played in full screen
Now if only I could set up my wifi to stream rather than just browse then I'd be sorted!
Thanks,
Mark
Check all your Wi-Fi settings because it doesn't seem to make sense that you can stream over radio but not Wi-Fi. Make sure that the Wi-Fi connection you link up to is set to connect to whatever your main internet connection is on your phone. Also check the router (if you're trying this at home with a wireless router) and make sure your router isn't blocking anything, although when I installed Orb, it configured itself to go through my router without needing any manual input from me, which was nice

Well my Dlink DI-524 isn't quite so helpfull
I've traced the problem to my router, and I can now stream by manually assigning an IP address to the TyTN (as opposed to DCHP) and then putting that IP into the routers DMZ (demilitarised zone).
I'm not sure how safe it is doing that but at least it works now

I haven't found anything on here for Orb. Doesn't anyone use it? It is so useful on winmo (specially the diamond with only 4 gb of internal storage) and it would be even better on the G1.
Supposedly orb says it works, can anyone here get it to work on 3G? It works if you are connected to your own personal wifi, but when you connect to someone elses (or 3G) you get an error.
Are you using the orb website?
And is your computer open on the right ports?
I am going through orb.com on my g1. I never changed anything on my computer. It was working fine with my sprint diamond, and even worked somewhat OK with my sprint instinct, but not with this g1 I can't get anything to stream via 3G.
Have no idea about ports and stuff. I know that orb gave a link to some sort of complicated thread about changing stuff, I didn't want to get all technical until I find out that is the only method.
I tried changing formats and speeds but nuttin.
It may be the new t-mobile settings they are now redirecting images on the data connections to compress them... maybe for audio too?
I am able to browse my orb page, but when I try to stream video I am unable to open the feed with anything. It worked great with my tilt even t-mobile's edge. If somebody is watching tv using orb on their g1, give everyone some idea as to how you are using it. What type of feed are you using there are a few, I figure it has to be one of the 3 .3gp streams. Will play with it again when I get home.
Thanks,
Manny
It's probably a problem with not forwarding ports. I'll look into it.
I have it working on my setup... I am using Video Player and that is what picked up the movie...
Also audio plays as well going through the music player.
I am not seeing any issues I suspect they are with your computer or internet connection. I have my computer set up in a way that allows all ports to be forwarded in and out... This is part of my speciality so of course I know exactly what I am doing so I can do it but I don't suggest everyone to do it.
The other thing is if your connections up speed (smaller of two numbers normally) is low you will have issues. Because of the 3G being faster than edge it may have issues. I would suggest checking issues with your network speed while on the orb page.
What is the stream type? Flash? WMV...what? The video player launches on mine but it states the format is not supported. Can someone look into their Settings and post results? Thanks.
Its great over wifi. Doesn't stream videos well over 3G. Audio is fine though.

Your speciality? I didn't know that 30 seconds in a router took that much skill...
I have it set up a little differently LOL not just your normal NAT or DMZ style, I actually have a business line to my house for my job and I keep my work computer and my personal computer on seperate networks and the server has a seperate IP as well that is connected to both networks. Like I said I know what I am doing been in the business for quite some time and this is what I do for a living. I don't have any firewalls on the server it is completely open... but I don't think you will be getting in any time soon HEHE.
On the codec side... I have to check other videos to see if they work because the video I streamed was meant to play on the G1... but the codec is 3gp-aac/rtsp format
All videos work at that codec... makes it easier to watch videos now LOL
Mine works pretty well over wifi and network. I think what had happened to me was when I first tried testing it there wasn't a video app yet and I didn't bother to try it again until now. Back when I first got the phone. 3gp-aac/rtsp stream works for me, every once in a while it does tell me it can't play a video, but if I restart the stream it work.
I can connect and get my picture and music files but I can't get video or TV...I'm thinking it has to be something with the stream settings because I have a video that plays off my SD card but wont play when I try connecting through orb to same video file on my computer. What speed do you recommend? Can we stream TV at this point or is that out because of limited file formats?
Orb working for me
Orb is working just fine for me. Audio, video, everything. The only issue I have is when my phone switches from 3g to edge at work, it comes up and says that I can't play the video. I then restart from the same point, and it works fine. I just had to forward my ports.
port forwarding huh? Mind posting a link to for a step by step?

How exactly would you stop 0day exploits without a firewall? Or do you just pretend those don't exist... ?
My server acts not only as a server but a router as well... it doesn't have a conventional firewall. I worked for a security company that looks at all incoming traffic and can route and block traffic that looks malicious. It is not a firewall it is a routing program in itself. This runs on my main server that can route to Network A, B, or C. As I said I do this for a living my garage is a "server farm" or as good as it can be for residential.
I have not had any attacks in over 3 years... I think I am doing pretty good.
I have used orb with my G1 and 3G and it streamed sirius just fine. that was with usirius as well, also it was with original rc now I am at 30 it may not work havent tried it yet
So the Nexus 7 has some super sweet specs for that price point, but the one thing holding me back is the lack of an SD card slot. No, no, no, Google!!!
So I'm wondering if it's possible to work around this by streaming media from my phone (Galaxy S2, ICS + Touchwiz) directly to the tablet via wifi or bluetooth? I.e. the tablet connects directly to the phone, and not via a wifi network.
If not then I might have to pass on this tab, which is a damn shame because it looks so nice...

I was wondering the same thing. If this had a microSD slot I would have ordered one already.
The other thing holding me back is no HDMI output. Other than the “Q”, how could you stream video to a TV? Is that even an option??? I currently use my ipad to stream MLB.tv to my TV and this is a must for any tablet I own. I want to get rid of my ipad for the Nexus 7 but these two issues are holding me back.
no microsd card makes me glad i bought the tab2 7.0 when it came out 2-3 months ago.
i was planning on selling and buying this if it had it (due to nexus dev community), but that is downright silly not to have the slot.

Probably, but even if not, use wifi tether on your phone, give the tablet internet. then use the cloud.
Also, as I posted in general, use micro USB to USB for more storage
you can use wifi direct or you could set up ftp on phone then mount it on tablet

The cloud isn't an option for me as I travel on the London Underground a lot. No clouds to be seen down there, that's for sure.
Perhaps use the storage on your phone with WiFi hotspot and XLink to transfer files? I think that would work just fine.
I kind of wish it had more to offer, but then it would certainly cost way more too. So I think the options and alternatives will come, given the mass of people who will get this .

Yeah, I hate it that they didn't at least offer higher capacities. I'd gladly would have paid for a 64GB version. I wasn't going to get one, but then I figured that I may simply use it to read on or play games instead of store all my media. I think it would have been better if they had an microSD slot and included 2GB of system storage and 8GB card for data. That way people could put whatever sized card they wanted to on there. :\
I guess Google wants people to expand their imaginations.... Imagine how awesome your device would be if you had access to wi-fi on your commute.
Wifi Direct Might be an option as stated earlier. I haven't played with it yet though. Also don't forget the NFC Android Beam that was upgraded in 4.1 and also Bluetooth could also be an option. I'm going to head home and test some stuff on my Acer A500 tonight and see if some of this works.

Ok here's how i managed to transfer files from my phone to my tablet without needing to be connected to wifi/mobile data connection - and it's much faster than bluetooth (bout 3-4 min for a 500mb file. I wasn't able to properly stream video, but you can play the file as you download, so it's kind of like streaming only you have to delete the file afterwards.
1. Download FTPserver (free app) from Play onto your phone.
2.Turn off your mobile data connection and then switch on wifi hotspot.
3. Setup FTPserver (user, password, port etc) and make sure you check all the boxes for accepting connections.
4. Connect tablet to the wifi hotspot. Open up an FTP client (es file exporer or whatever) and connect to your phones FTP server. Voila; access away.
If you've already got plenty of space on your phone, it's bypasses the need for wi-drives and the need to carry around an extra gadget.
[update] Using Samba Filesharing (similar setup to above) app on my phone i was able to stream video over the hotspot, only bout 5 secs buffering before it started to play. So pretty good.
[update 2] The built in server on FileExpert allows you to stream - works better than the samba app which was a bit crashy when starting it up.
Bubbleupnp works for me.
