Hi,
I wasn't sure whether to put this in here or the dev forum. So I opted to put it in here, hopefully it gets the right attention.
I have a AU Vodafone HTC Magic(32B), which refuses to let me flash any custom rom on it. Anytime I do so, it gets stuck on the splash screen and never boots.
I was running it for for a few months, without having changed the SPL etc after I got it with Cyanogen. Then I wanted to update to St0kes 2.1 Rom. And it required a ENG SPL so I updated my SPL without issue to 1.33.2005 ENG from Amon Ra's Instructions and then flashed the ROM and had no issues at all for a week or so. Then suddenly my phone decided to get stuck at the splash. From then on i've flashed numerous SPL's etc and the only thing I can get to work is the SAPPIMG.NBH updates. I have a goldcard with one on it that I have been using for recovery etc when I try and flash a rom and it goes bad.
I am able to put a custom recovery on it, and also a Eng SPL. Its currently running Amon Ra's 1.5.2G recovery and 1.33.2005 ENG SPL. But I just tried to flash the Google ION rom from google and it is once again stuck. Which will force me to update with the SAPPIMG.NBH again!
Does anyone have any ideas, I would love to be able to flash a custom rom on this and had no issues at first. Should I update my Radio? I have the 29I radio currently.
To summarise my phone details
AU Vodafone 32B
1.33.2005 ENG SPL
Amon Ra's recovery.
Apologies also for the massive wall of text I hope it makes sense.

Hi
I just need some of the experts on the forum to check my logic. I am in the middle of doing this so Im just trying to make sure.
Details of my phone:

I am aware that that is the 'perfect SPL'
I am using an HTC Magic from Vodacom (South Africa). The current version of my firmware is 1.5 (Cupcake).
These are the steps that I have already followed:
1.) I have succesfully changed my recovery image to this one -> Amon Ra’s Recovery Image using the One Click Rooting described by the guys from The Unlockr
2.) I can get into the recovery by pressing and holding Home + Power
My questions:
1.) Should I flash the SPL to a different one? I am looking at changing to this one: Engineering-SPL-HBOOT-1.33.2005-signed, will it work on my phone?
2.) If I need to flash the SPL can I follow the steps provided by this tutorial but instead of fastboot just use the Amon Ra's Recovery tool?
Processes to be followed:
1.) I will be changing to the RA-IONv1.6.2H ROM as provided on The Unlockr and I will be following the steps in their How to Load a Custom ROM tutorial.
As you can see, I have come a ways but I am a bit paranoid as I have previously bricked a phone. I would like some of the pro's just to check my logic and also comment on my choice of ROM and SPL.
Thank you in advance
You can use any of the SPL that are showed there... I'm using the Engineering SPL 1.33.2009 SPL...
To update it just put it on the SD and aplly update:choose (if you are using the Amon_Ra recovery) or update:update.zip if you are using another recovery (remember that if you use this method you will have to rename the file as update.zip)...
To install a rom it's quite easy, just put the rom in the SD and in the recovery make a nandroid backup, then wipe/factory reset and finally install the rom using the update option...
Restart and voila, you will have te rom... Just remember that you have to use a 32A rom...
Thanks No-Frost for the quick reply.
Another question:
If I flash the SPL, does my current ROM stay in tact or should I flash SPL and a new ROM afterwards?
Im very nervous to flash my phone again so Im trying to read up as much as possible about the process and ways to recover.
I have succesfully loaded the new SPL (Engineering SPL 1.33.2009 SPL) as well as the new ROM. The new ROM feels faster but I dont like it much. I am searching for a new one.
To answer some of my own questions:
- If you add a new SPL the current ROM still works fine (very noob question and answer but just for in case someone else has the same question)
- The Amon Ra's Recovery works very well. I prefer it to the fastboot. Just feels safer to do everything on the phone
Thanks for the help!
I rooted my phone using the "one click" root method (from standard Rogers 1.5 firmware) (http://zenthought.org/system/files/asset/2/flashrec-1.1.1-20090908.apk) and then updated to the latest radio:
•2.22.19.26I
•Baseband Version: 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I
•http://sapphire-port-dream.googlecode.com/files/ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip
I initiall got the box with the arrow then the phone continued to the Rogers boot screen and has been stuck there for 20 minutes at least! So i took out the battery and turned it back on again and it get stuck on the Rogers screen still!
Have I bricked it!?! I thought you can only brick it when you update the SPL ... all I did was update the radio. Please HELP!
Thanks in advance.
Do you have a RA or Cyan recovery?
If so, try booting into it. You know, Home+Power.
yes when i did the "one step" root, it made a recovery image ... but when I press home+power it still sits on the Rogers screen!
the power+camera button combination doesn't work either.

If it helps I was following the instructions step by step from: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/howtos/howto_hack_your_android_g1_phone?page=0,2
If you have a Rogers Dream you should be following the guide here:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_Rogers_Dream_EBI1_to_CyanogenMod
You have a radio that is incompatible with your rom and recovery. You should be able to fix this by just flashing the radio for rogers phone again.
Boot into fastboot on your phone using camera and power on and check what SPL you have (hboot 1.33.00??).
according to that guide I bricked my phone:
2.Be very careful of any upgrade or mod instructions that require you to install an HTC "Recovery" zip/image, a replacement radio, or anything that might cause a difference of versions thereby bricking your phone.
eg: you currently have an EBI1 system and recovery image. If you boot an EBI0 radio image you will no longer be able to boot your phone.

That guide should really say "thereby possibly bricking your phone". I will make the change. If you want me to try to help you fix your phone I can but you will need to tell me what version your spl is.
I would appreciate your help! except that I can't boot into recovery mode/fast boot mode or any other mode, therefore can't check spl version.
I knew that you wouldn't be able to get into recovery but I thought you would still be able to get into fastboot. You can also try holding back while powering on. Without getting into one of these modes I'm afraid there's not much we can do.
Its sorta a long shot but you could try this: (its for the magic but its worth a shot as a last resort)

FLASH RADIO FIRST THEN FLASH SPL. LOOK BELOW FOR INSTRUCTIONS.
you are supposed to update radio and spl. you cannot choose one. first flash radio and when it says to reboot, reboot and it will reboot back into recovery when done. then flash the spl. same steps as above. then wipe data, wipe ext file system, then repair ext. after that flash the rom again. the radio and the spl is from the same site you used.
hope this helped. you should do research before flashing anything. i'm glad i did before flashing a new radio and spl. also once you get sorted out, flash the same recovery image i have (in signature) and make a nandroid backup for cyanogen or a donut rom and make a bart backup for hero rom (i recommend MLIGN 3.2B but switch to the Hero 2.1 ROM when they fix everthing) so you can switch those out. it is safe and I did it a lot of times.
I really want to get 1.6 on my device, (Rogers Dream) but I really don't want to flash the SPL, because if I brick that I have to buy a totally new Dream, no warranty.
What to do!
edit: I booted with camera and power and it says hboot is 1.33.0009, does this mean I don't have to risk bricking when I root? The tutorial is for 1.33.0010.

1) This is for ROGERS Dreams, they use different radios and SPLs to regular HTC Dreams/G1's. So your instructions would brick ROGERS Dreams.
2) You don't have to flash the radio and SPL at the same time. They are independant, however the 1.33.2005 requires the 26i radio. If you're on 1.1 and you upgrade to a 1.5/1.6 ROM you should update the radio, but there's no reason to change the SPL from stock unless you want to flash builds the require extra space in the NAND.
if im using the dwang 1.13 flash, will the sapphire radio update work with the g1? is it compatible?
sorry what does updating the radio do for you?
Tim Brazil Magic are these:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT-1.76.0007 (SAPP60000)
CPLD-12
RADIO-6.35.07.29
AUG. 4 2009 19:43:30
from what i read the SPL is perfect, can't change it or downgrade Radio.
I have to use Amon RA Hero Recovery 1.62, change to SPL 1.76.2007 and then downgrade Radio to 3.x SPL to 1.33x and install Amon Ra Magic 1.70+ to install CM
If i follow the CM wiki I won't be able to backup the stock rom because of the goldcard+european RUU to gain root access.
- So i was thinking about using Universal Androot to root it, then Rom Manager to Install ClockworkMod (using HTC Magic option) and do a backup. will it work with this 0007 SPL?
- from there, can i use clockwork to flash SPL 1.76.2007?
- then i was thinking if i could use Radio Switcher >"flash old" - so it will flash the Radio, SPL (and Amon RA recovery?) i need in a safe way (wiping everything)
if it makes sense it should be an easier and updated guide.
no need of goldcard, RUU or shell commands.
I can go back to Radio Switcher> "flash new" to have back the SPL and 6.35x Radio and restore the stock rom backup if someday Tim Brazil releases an update.
thanks in advance
Well - this is the most structured and accurate first post i ever seen :0)
You sir, have gained my respect :0)
You are completely on the right track.
I will not use Rom Manager. To many have bricked their devices with that app.
Follow my guide (check my signature for link) and you should have both root and custom recovery(Amon-Ra version) without changing your system, beside the root of course.
From the recovery you flash eng spl 1.76.2007 as you correctly stated above(also included in the guide).
Then make a nandroid backup using the custom recovery, to make sure you always can return to stock.
Once the eng spl is flashed you can use the radioswitcher(the link is also in my signature) to change between the old and new radio/spl/recovery combos. You can also wipe from the tool or from custom recovery.
The remaining is to flash the cm6 rom + the EBI1 kernel. Then you should be good to go :0)
Good luck!
Thank you
want to know the sad (and funny) part? I don't have the phone yet. I've bought it but i still got a few days left to receive it from Tim Brazil. So i've been reading...
I was hoping i could use Rom Manager, the GUI would be very easy to follow. I know it even has Amon RA as alternate recovery, but i don't think it's the Hero 1.62. I'd use it only to flash the recovery.
I think it could be done with FlashRec also. I read that it does a backup of the original recovery and then flash the custom recovery.
I've already downloaded the .zip from your guide
I can't seem to find the guide for this. I know it can be done....or am I crazy. I rooted a friends phone this weekend. Tried to use unrevoked but it wouldnt work until I down graded froyo. He's rooted now. But still want to downgrade his hboot. And for the life of me I can't find the guide.

I think maybe this is what you want. It installs the eng hboot and amon ra recovery in one shot. The updated file with ra 1.8 is in post 18 in that thread. There's a guide in the first post. The only thing I can think to add is that you'll want to have a rom on the sd card ready to go. The reason being, it might boot loop after the install (mine did) and the only way I know to get out of it is to flash a new rom (or reflash the current one).
I can't post the link or i would just do that.
In the EVO 4G Android Development section, the post you want is called 'ENG bootloader (0.76 needed for CM6) extended fastboot commands'
How to successfully downgrade to eng hboot .76.2000

Zikronix, I have just downgraded my HBOOT from .97 to 0.76.2000. (In fact done this a couple times both from 2.02 and .97). In case you still need this.. below are the steps.
1. Got my replacement EVO today (hboot .97, 3.29.651 build, 1.71 PRI)
2. Rooted it with this method using default (clockworkmod recovery)
3. Rebooted and flashed Amon_ra recovery (optional.. my preference)
4. Copied the correct Eng hboot file (renamed as PC36IMG.zip) to my sdcard, rebooted to bootloader, Eng hboot zip was flashed, I accepted update, done. Rebooted into recovery.
5. Flashed my favorite root ROM (this is necessary bcos the change on hboot does something funky to your existing rom, so you can only reboot into bootloader ... not sure why, some dev should be able to explain more)
6. Done.
So I flashed the OTA update and now have the 1.33.0013 SPL.
I had previously been rooted prior to this so I decided to do it again.
I rooted the stock 2.2.1 and installed a custom recovery through command line once I got SU. I think the OS was blocking me from opening ROM Manager cause no matter how many times I tried to open it, it would not turn on (this is after a first boot from wipe).
However, once I got a custom recovery I booted into it, Nandroided what was already there and removed the default 2.2.1. It unroots you as soon as you boot into it so I wanted to avoid that.
So now I'm trying to Flash Cyan 6.1 and also the Remix of Cyan 6.0 with the 2.2.1 base that was posted here in the days prior to the 2.2.1 OTA actually being fully out in ZIP form.
Both result in a never-ending boot. It doesn't loop. It simply doesn't move beyond the splash prior to the SPL / ROM so I always have to take the battery out. No I'm not impatient. I left it on all night to try to get through it.
I can get into Recovery just fine (it's an old version of Clockwork I knew worked). Can I fastboot flash the SPL it has now right from the Clockwork recovery?
Radio is 2.22.27.08 so I don't know if that might also be influencing something.
If anyone is curious I found the answers to my question in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139
Turns out the Radio is incompatible with the default cyan kernal.
