I'm a newb to android and pretty impressed with stock. Just looking over some of the crazy things people are doing, I'm wondering what the latest and greatest thing to do with the My Touch 3G is. From Which ROM/software to run all the way down to settings and Apps. Would really appreciate the run down. Thanks

The Answer
hey there. im gonna actually answer ur question instead of telling u to search. okay well there is really two things u can do, maybe three.
1) install cyanogen's ROM
2) hero ROM
3) donut optimized ROM
my first choice would be cyanogen. visit his site:
www.cyanogenmod.com
this rom is basically the most stable and fastest rom out there. its running the 1.6 donut firmware but it is highly optimized. this is what i am using now. second option is to install a hero rom. i would try either eugenes rom or maxisma's hero roms. they are the best and they offer the best support without being rude. check them out here:
Eugene:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=575501
Maxisma:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566965
third option (which i dont recommend) is to use an optimized donut rom that ISNT cyanogen. i wouldnt even bother with these. these are the three roms i would use. take care.

People would be more willing to help instead of just saying to search for the answer, if the OP had posted this in the right section of the forum. This belongs in general, not development. That's why Evil and I did not help. As you can tell by my link, I posted the forum rules and how you need to post in the right section because development is not general, like this question is.

the choices that you made are your own, i simply thought i would answer the questions. no one commented on the fact that you didnt answer. all i said is that i am going to answer instead of telling him to search because telling him to search doesnt answer his question. you dont have to justify your choice. if u dont wanna answer then dont. u dont have to make a post about WHY you didnt answer. this is the start this thread getting off topic.

All opinions are subjective. I would flash dwang 1.11 to your MT3G as it runs a lot more smoothly than Cyanogen. Look for dwang's rom on this board as IMO it is the fastest and most optimised rom for the 32b Magic/MT3G.
Yeah dwang's rom is really good. Using it right now. And there are good alternatives for some of the Hero features. Beautiful widgets or weather widget (skinnable!) instead of Hero flip clock. Advanced Launcher if you want more home screens, spelldial for responsive touch dialing (can't live without this one). And the touch keyboard from Hero is available (search HTC IME, this keyboard also includes XT9).
As for the wrong section;
Maybe subtexts for the categories would help a bit?

Welcome to Android and hello from a fellow MT3G user. Important things to know about modding your android phone, the Mytouch 3g = Magic 32b. This is important and how developers explain which rom (build) is for which phone. The second most important thing to invest in is a CLASS 6 micro SD card. This is very important, class 6 is the speed of the SD card and a very fast SD card is needed for running any HERO rom. HERO roms put files on the SD card that are needed with normal usage so if you use the SD card that comes with the phone (class 2) it will run slow as hell. A good, cheap class 6 SD card is this 8gb Adata card for 17.75. This is the SD card I use. If you're still on the SD card that comes with the phone, you're not out of luck. I would start out with Cyanogen's 4.3.2.1, his current build. His builds have the latest and greatest features while not starting from a hero build. It does not have the super fancy UI, but still looks a lot prettier than stock, is rock solid stable and runs extremely fast. Check it out here.
I'm assuming you've never rooted an android phone before, so when you're ready, which this step-by-step video on how to root . I would certainly recommend watching the video a few times before you do it and make SURE to follow it exactly. Good luck, have fun and post up with your thoughts and experiences.

So what are the benefits from running different roms? Will the processing be faster? In other words, if you (the reader of this reply) was a salesman and I (acscott22) was the customer why would I want to switch roms? What am I going to notice from making the switch?
does the mt3g need partitions or do you need them only for certain roms?
quick question
Since HTC has already stated they wont release Sense UI for any google branded phones (Mytouch 3g, etc) instead of flashing a Hero rom, wouldn't it be easier to flash a vanilla unbranded Donut ROM onto the Mytouch and then add the Sense UI?
not sure if anyone has tried this yet though

Well, a salesman wouldn't really tell you to as it's all a bit nudge-nudge wink-wink and voids your warranty.
Pretty much you'll be allowing yourself to do things you wouldn't normally be able to do with a stock ROM, some of which would help speed up your phone a bit. It's not so much about just speeding things up but exploring the potential of the phone to its fullest. Not only that but you'll have all the latest and greatest updates without waiting for you carrier to release them over OTA! Impress your friends! Befuddal your enemies (see; iPhone users)!

Only with ROMs that support/require them, primarily for App2SD (instead of storing applications in the phones internal storage storing them in on the SD) and/or a swap partition to free up RAM. Most of the time it's not necessary but you'll be missing out on the additional, beneficial functionality.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure Sense UI requires a lot of dependencies that are only present in Hero ROMs, and can't just be brought across wholesale from said Hero ROM to AOSP builds.
ok but HTC has said that they are going to release sense UI to unbranded Magics. Not sure when, but they did say that it was going to happen. I guess I'll have to hold out. I cant go without bluetooth, but I really like the Sense UI of the Hero Roms.

I've been a lurker for quite some time... and I always feel like i'm missing something. I've already got the cyanogenmod, but what you posted I found was helpful. There's a lot of roms out there, there's lots of lists, and many have a lot of information in them. Informations good, but it's nice to see it summarized in just a few sentences.
Sure a lot of posts are reposts... but sometimes those good because older stuff needs updating/clarification.
Thanks!

HTC were talking about HTC branded Magics (32A). The 32B Magic (MyTouch3G) is Google branded and doesn't have enough RAM to run Sense UI.

hey im pretty new to the android world so bare with me please
i have a cdma hero and i have fresh 1.1...today a friend told me about a app called droidswap
so i installed it and made the pagefile on my sd card and it gave me a HUGE performance increase so it motivated me to get on xda to see what else i can do to make my phone better
i noticed that there is a new optimized kernel and full working roms with 2.1 i just dont know which one to get
in your opinion which one is the fastest with all the features? i dont want aps2sd and i want to be able to use the droidswap app...
sorry for the long post but i need your help you guys
If you don't care about android 2.1 and android 1.5 is enough for you, you can try the MODACO ROM with technologist kernel.. it's the fastest rom with HTC'S SENSE UI that i've tried..
If you want the android 2.1 you must choose: with or without SENSE UI because the htc platform uses more memory and resorces..
so.. with sense ui try the Villian ROM it's really fine , works awesome and running the sense just fine..
-if you don't care about the htc platform try the others.. I'm working with [email protected]'s esspreso and I love it! it's fast and it has everything I need..
-if you're looking for speed only , the clean ROMS will do the job. less addons more speed

I'd say you should try a few ROMs yourself. Telling you what ROM too choose is the same telling you what car to buy.
I'd say be very, very careful! Most of the ROMs mentioned here are *not* for the CDMA Hero.
Check out the CDMA Hero subforum for details of ROMs compatible with your device.

Hi Guys,
I have a G1, got it from the States on eBay when they 1st come out. It was unlocked and had Cyan on it.
I have been doing updates all along and it just seems to be getting slower and slower and slower, kind of like a computer over time.
I neve installed Apps to SD or what ever it is called. I did install Taskiller but it always shows like 25 to 27 free ... so why is it so slow and what can I do to speed it up?
Thanks
Mike
Probably degrading.
Three things that should get you back to optimal speed:
1. Clear ALL caches. Do it manually through app manager in settings or get one of the apps that does it (I recommend CacheMate).
2. Clear your Dalvik Cache.
3. If those two don't help, it may be time to wipe fully and start with a fresh install of the ROM.
What is the Dalvik Cache?
just do a fresh wipe and re-install everything
Automatic task killer did it for me, and getting rid of all but one widget on my homescreen. Also I flashed from cyan to super D. It's great!
Hi Guys ...
1) How do I do a wipe?
2) Is there faster roms then Cyan?
3) Can I get just a stock 1.6 Rom?
Thanks

I respect the amount of work he puts into trying new things.. but that doesn't mean I'd actually want to use his releases on my phone. No need to insult the man, either way.
P.S you should have really done more research on rooted devices before buying a rooted device, because when you want to flash a new rom you'll have a lot of reading to do...
Thanks for all of the help guys ...
As for the last post ... I got the phone becuase I liked it, not becuase I wanted a rooted device. I wanted a G1 that worked in Canada as we did not have them at the time. What came from eBay was what it was and I have made it work, it has just got slower in the 2 years I had it.
I have installed the stock ROM from HTC and everything is back to they way it was, nice and quick! ... Thanks to the members who helped.
Mike
I'm not sure how fair of a statement about Cyan you made. My wife is running a Cyan ROM and it's very fast. I'm running OpenEclair 1.2.2 and while I love it, it's not nearly as fast has her Cyan ROM. Also my stock G1 1.6 was getting terribly slow even after rebooting it.

He doesn't need a source, it's fact that we don't (quite) have GL drivers running for Eclair yet, so it's wasting a bucketload of CPU power drawing everything in software. I'm not quite so sure how much RAM it wastes and how much is overheads from the rest of the Eclair system though.. I'm reserving judgement until I see hardware GL running. I understand OE 1.3 has the hardware drivers and is in testing now, so we'll know soon enough.

I already knew that, excep the part about OpenEclair including hardware drivers. Again, what is the source of OpenEclair 1.3 fixing these issues?
I don't know the full details but compatible drivers have been released for the hero or one of those similar phones and are in the hands of the relevant people.. OE devs have stated that 1.3 will include the drivers. I can't be bothered to find the post where it was said but it's here somewhere.

easy fit an an mt3g without a2sd
/system 90mb
/cache 80mb
170mb,,
might have stick some on data
going to be easier to fit on NoneDanger than Danger
even a g1 can probably fit most, if not all the system files onto the internal memory, user apps and dalvik-cache would defiantly need to be a2sd
I might have a look when I'm done with what I'm doing

Live wallpapers isn't that good. Just waste battery and makes the system slower but it is good eye candy and great to show off the phone. The phone has a decent amount of RAM (512 mb) so once this phone gets rooted someone can enable LW.

Live wallpaper is not available on 2.1 with Sense UI which the MyTouch Slide seems to be running... not T-Mobile's fault.

Hi ,
I have used almost al roms for the Desire Z , many are exelent , many bad.. But no-one rom is perfect. For example you can flash CM7 , very good Rom and super fast but the visuals are not like Sense..Or you can flash for example a Sense ROM , very good visuals but not so much ram , and laggy sometimes.
So this guide is for user that want to have Sense Rom's running well , and to speed up their device.
Here there are my suggestions to help you , if your sense-rom is not fast as you want , and it's laggy.
All of this suggestion try for your own risk.
Ok let's start legit..
First of all , do not use live wallpapers , because your CPU will load to much , even if you have overclocked it.
Move your apps-games into the SDCard , in this way you will keep more possible your device "clean"
Overclock your device , alias Desire Z. You can choose between a lot of kernels , my suggest is not to overclock it more than 1.3Ghz or you will have to re-boot your phone many times. I use Unity's Kernel wich allows swap , and overclocking to 2Ghz. And i remeber , to have a clean overclocking you need free ram , or your phone will be not responsable.
Use the v6Supercharger with the option "Mega Ram 2" , this is a very good script and working , i got +30MB of ram with using this script wich is a very good solution if you have a sense-rom like me. link is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276
I add if you use the script to not use task-killers
Swap your SDcard , honestly i do not get to much advantages with doing it , but meybe for someone will be interesting
For now this are my small suggest's , when i will have another suggestions i will update the thread

Maybe you should fix your language and your interpunction.
It makes me crazy.
Or you could use Sense 2.0 (a.k.a. Stock) until ICS is up and ready, as it has good looks AND performance.
At least that's what I did. Got sick of jumping from one ROM to another on a weekly (sometimes even daily) basis just to find one that runs smooth.
Shame, though, really love Sense 3.5.
No offence but this thread pretty useless. Mostly everybody knows about these.
Maybe you should put this in the General section so new users can know what to do.
Just my opinion.
Looks like our new mod will be doing some housekeeping pretty soon.

After trying all these awesome tips my DZ is flying!!! Like..... really flying..................
Yikes guys, take it easy on the him eh?
He's only trying to be helpful, and there are a few things I just read that I did not know beforehand.
"to have a clean overclocking you need free ram"
I have noticed that my phone does slow down when I opened/exited many apps, no matter how much I overclock it. I do resort to using a rudimentary task killer at times to free up ram on CM7. That's the only way my device becomes snappy again. Either that or reboot.
The G2 has a healthy amount of RAM, but can be overwhelmed a little easily.
And yes, our phones cannot handle live wallpapers with ease. You can notice a little lag. I guess the G2 is not as high end as I once thought it was.
I'd like to know from another source before we take the better overclocking with free ram idea as gospel.
Anyone confirm this? Not through testing - with actual facts?

It's not so much that more ram = better overclock but rather more free ram = more cached processes = less calculations needed to be done by the cpu so THEORETICALLY fast processing
It's very useful tip.. for me at least.. ..thanks man..
Same here thanks for the info
It's got some useful tips actually.
But it should probably be moved to the General section.
Thanks op.
his username is xdadevolpers - so obviously this thread should be moved to the brand new devolpment section
hey, I have a tip for OP - I heard that iPhones really are the best, you never even have to remove the battery, they even got rid of that pesky battery door!
