so i got the dreaded dust under my lcd screen even with a screen protector on. i went to a sprint service center and they tried to clean it out and couldn't get all of it. they said they have seen many hero's with this issue and of course it is well known on the net. sprint says htc is working on a fix? so my question to them was, when they fix it will they repair our hero's or will we get another phone? sprint claims they will notify owners when the fix is ready. i have no idea what this means but they are very aware of it! bottom line is it is a manufacturer and sprint defect and im getting a new hero shipped out to me in a few days. where or not this one gets dust is yet to be seen but im very unhappy right now!
ive gone through 4 defective brand new sprint phones in 6 months. i love the hero but if my replacement gets dust im selling it for another device.
any of you guys have this issue yet?
I have it in my Hero as well. I bought at release, and the problem really escalated in late December. Now there is a huge explosion shaped area of dust coming from the bottom left corner of my screen. I'd show a picture if i had a camera other than my phone.
Issue is widly known, but I thought they already had a fix for this. Wasn't hardware version 2 a fixed model? Seems like they put something in between the phone body and screen. Maybe I am thinking about my old Storm, but I thought this had been fixed in all new models.

call sprint for a replacement, they will do it for you. from what the tech told me, htc is working on another hero device that will be the replacement for our defective ones. they think we will all get a free upgrade as long as we can proove we have a dusty phone.

there is no current fix for the hero, htc is 'working on it". it must be a defective seal on the lcd.

No company is ever going to give free upgrades when the complaint about the phone is a little dust under the screen ...............................................................................
Think about what you just said..
Its stupid to put any phone in your pocket,(ie Blackberry trackballs etc) and that issue is a direct result of a condition you have personally put your phone in..
Neither sprint, nor HTC is responsible for shoddy electronic upkeep.
mine has dust on the left botton corner too.. it's a revision 2 model...

It's a defect??
So an issue that 1/1,000,000 Hero's has is a defect? Just because something is "widespread on the internet" doesn't mean its a defect. Just because 25 people have an issue doesn't mean its a defect. That 25 people is only a small small fraction of the entire market..
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it important. If you took the same care of your cell phone, that you do with everything else you own, you wouldn't be in this predicament..
Get rid of your sense of entitlement, and think before you talk...
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/23679?start=0&tstart=0&reqsorting=dec
that's how big this issue is, i cannot believe they cannot fix this or do a recall. i may have no choice but to buy a different phone.

I don't have dust... And I take care of my phone....

At the risk of feeding the troll I just want to say the following:
I just returned a phone I'd had for 2 weeks due to the dust under the LCD screen issue. I can assure you quite thoroughly that I took care of the phone. The people at Sprint knew about the issue and replaced it with no problems.
1. I don't now, nor have I ever carried my phone in my pocket.
2. The phone has a case, with belt clip. I carry it there.
3. I had a screen protector on the phone.
4. The dust appeared after the 3rd day.
5. I lint-free cloth cleaned my screen each evening.
Just because you were one of the lucky ones who got the phone without issues doesn't automatically mean that you're the only one who knows how to take care of your phone. People who spend 500-600.00 on a phone generally take REALLY good care of them.

your a troll, so yeah the hundreds of people with dust treat their phones like ****?..... please!
not to sound like a troll, but here's my story
i take EXCELLENT care of my phone, like its almost sad how much i love this phone and don't want anything to happen to it. everytime after i use it i wipe it off, wash my hands before handling, i put it in a ziploc bag anytime there may be moisture around.... the list goes on
my girlfriend on the other hand... she has a with google hero and her phone rolls around in her purse all day, one night she lost it and i found it under a couch cushion, she's dropped it (she has one of those bodyglove cases on it) and it came apart into about 6 pieces, three times that i know of, dropped it in spaghetti, the list goes on and on and on....
she doesn't take care of it at all,
but yet i have dust under my screen and she doesn't.
it's not about who takes better care of the device, it's about who gets what device to begin with. imo.
i had dust under my screen and my buttons (end call/ power and call) had the metal flaking off really bad
i brought it to the sprint store that had the service center and they gave me basically brand new housing for free. they replaced the whole front so my trackball is clear and it looks brand new
all for free!

i know how the dust in getting in our phones, there is a defective seal between the body & the lcd. how do i have proof? i went to install a screen protector today and the solution leaked underneath the lcd and leaves staining and a fog. i had to put my hero in a bag of dry rice to preserve & dry it. no other phone i have had, had this issue when installing a screen protector, im only using a small amount of water spray too, not a ton.

I actually agree, for some reason I am just unable to pass up an opportunity to give you $h1t
Fortunately I have been one of the lucky few who have no dust under my screen and my call/end button paint shows no wear at all. My hero looks as new today as it did on 3/12/2009 when I got it.
I was serious though about getting photographic documentation, not sure what you would do with it but if you ad an opportunity to tell someone who could do something about it you would be glad you took the pics (ie, emailing someone at htc or sprint, or even proving the defect to customer service in order to get a replacement)
*edit- You bought the screen protector from HTC? I put a full zagg shield on mine a couple months ago and was very paranoid about the solution getting down in the crack between the bottom of the screen and the button plate but I was lucky, no problems.

Eh...good luck. You've got water underneath your screen via a third party screen protective solution.
The liquid wouldnt have entered your screen had you not administered it. Water can creep through even the smallest of openings.
I highly doubt things are going to work in your favor if you enter a Sprint store. I'm not aware of any corporate Sprint location that advocates a screen solution that requires even the smallest amount of liquid since liquid damage is something that must be handled by the insurance company, Asurion, that many wireless providers work through.
Its worth a shot. Just dont be completely disappointed if the Sprint store doesnt respond in your favor.

Sprint stores as well as Best Buy both install screen protectors, so I doubt that would be an issue.
Umm...not to be rude here, but that's been a known issue for a while. It's not new. Anyone who's had the dust issue (myself included) has known about the seal under the screen leaking.
Yes it's defective. If you put up enough of a fuss they'll replace it with a refurb which will likely have the same problem.
I'm one of the lucky ones. I bought mine at best buy, got it replaced, and haven't had the problem since. It appears HTC had a bad batch (well a lot of them, really) for about 6-8 months. They fixed the problem after that, but the good ones are mixed in with the old ones. It's a crapshoot as to whether you'll get one without a dust problem.
I always get screen protectors that have built in sticky solution. never had the dust problem either.

I'll just put it like this, its not that I don't believe people are having these issues its just that they are exaggerating it completely out of proportion.
I have a Htc Hero(With Google) made in 2009, came with the 1.56 RUU Installed. I have 1 (READ 1) dead pixel on my entire screen, the case has no paint chips, no dust under the screen, buttons show no wear(its not paint...), my speakers work and sound great, I get a full signal in 90% of places, Calls never drop, hardware is fast if you know what your doing and tweak it, you can run 2.1 perfectly if you know what your doing, no battery issues whatsoever.
So yeah... a dead pixel... I'm completely returning my hero to Sprint for that. (not)
Click to collapse
I also have a dead pixel. And I'm not returning it for that reason, either.
But I feel I need to set you straight on a few issues.
#1. The dust issue is real. While I personally didn't wait until I had half my screen covered with it to replace it, I've seen pics (here I believe) where the phone is virtually unusable due to the dust. I had a small amount of dust. But why shouldn't I return it? Why should I spend a bunch of money on a defective piece of hardware? If it's not properly functioning when brand new I'm returning it. Which is what I did, and lucked out.
#2. Button wear. I've never had this problem (only had the phone a couple of months) but my wife has. Whether it's paint, or dye, or what have you, those things can and do flake. There are also images of it on these forums if you search for them.
#3. Never had a speaker problem.
#4. You seem to be extremely fortunate about where you live/drive/work then. Because signal issues happen if you do any travelling.
#5. I don't get people with battery problems either. I have the stock battery and can go all day (12-14 hours) and use 50% or less of the battery.
Anyhow, I doubt the people that are having the issues you mention are exaggerating, and at least in the case of the flaking buttons and dust I know from experience they're as bad as people make it out to be.

exactly, plus they sell them as well. it wouldn't void my warranty under water damage because the water indicator sticker is intact and there are no signs of water damage. i doubt a small amount of solution would seep under the screen unless it was defective. im about to call sprint and demand a brand new hero or a samsung moment as im on my 3rd phone now. besides the fact the 3rd phone they sent me was suppose to be new and it's a refurb with over 700 calls made from it. im really about to not buy htc or sprint anymore and maybe move to another carrier.

I'm not aware of any corporate Sprint Store that would install a screen protector that uses any form of a liquid. The screen protectors that Sprint stores sell are a stick film. Nothing that requires liquid to apply.
Best Buy stores do sell and install these...but you're not going to Best Buy for a replacement unit generally. I'm sure they'll turn you away.
well forget sprint, they said the most that will happen is to give me another refurbish, they need to all be on the same page. some say you get new phones and some say they give you used ones. after 3 phones im entitled to a new one or another comparable model. so i guess my last hope is to call htc on monday, after that im dropping my contract and going to t-mobile or verizon. maybe the issue is they give people used phones and not new ones, they need to start backing up their warranties because it seems to me they are just cheap as hell.

Yep the 3 phones for virtually nothing compared to how much you would of had to pay.
Why do we even bother with the $7?
I'm pretty sure I cracked my LCD but before I go on a man hunt I figured I'd check here first.
I tripped and rolled on my phone yesterday causing this to happen, when I turn on my Nexus you get a few colors but mostly the screen is black. The top glass is not broken.
I called HTC (my phone is still under warranty) and they said it'd be 155 bones to get it fixed.
Any idea where I can buy the LCD to fix this myself for cheaper?
I searched but couldn't find anything really.
this, this or this?
I have a broken one too, fell 2 floors down from stairs onto marble floor, though only amoled broke and i bought a new one for $100 cuz it was the only one who shipped to my country
Yep sounds like your LCD is broken. It's an easy enough fix if you wish to do it yourself, you should be able to get one on eBay for relatively cheap. I've actually got one spare that works perfectly if you want it. I'm based in the UK so it may be cheaper to get one on eBay if you're not around the same area.

Good stuff, sounds like you got a pretty decent rep to handle yours
I just had this same repair done by HTC. On the first information-gathering call to HTC, the rep told me I'd be without my phone for 2-3 weeks. So then I considered trying to repair it myself using an AMOLED screen from ebay, but saw they ship from China and didn't feel like waiting for that either.
In the end, HTC pointed out that they could ship me a replacement phone before I sent mine in. I received a working phone two days later, shipped mine and then approved the "repair" via a support website. Obviously, they then repair the damaged phone and dump it into the repair pool.
It cost $115 and I was very happy with the process.
Hope all goes well with the free repair!
So, I called in today to check the status. My nexus is on it's way back repaired and all...FREE OF CHARGE.

Congrats. HTC has been pretty great about service with the N1.
I have only been using this phone for about a week. has anyone has this problem and send it to htc to repair? does this cover under warranty??
This was a huge issue with my MT3G Slide. If I remember correctly, it is a warranty issue. You can send it to HTC or (not sure) I think T-Mobile will replace it. The problem is with the glue that holds the digitizer to the screen, it's crap.
Also, when you get your new phone go into a dark room and check for light leaks. Probably under the top shell so open the keyboard and look on the back side of the screen.
i have had my desire z for nearly 2 months now, no dust yet
I was in your spot a few weeks ago. Dust just magically accumulated under the screen one night. A few days later it bugged me so much I called T-mobile, explained that there is dust underneath the screen and that there is no physical damage on the phone. They sent out a replacement that night and I got it 3 days later. No issues no cost to me free shipping both ways.
They did this for me on a used phone I brought in too, so I'm sure there would be no issue getting yours replaced if its new especially.

I had the same issue caused by the screen not being aligned properly with the casing which left a 1mm gap between the the screen and casing allowing dust and fluff to seep through. It's a manufacturing fault so just send it back to htc. If you're rooted, best to unroot first, you don't want to give them any ammunition;, )

It's covered on warranty, you don't have to pay for anything, best to contact htc via email to keep a paper trail on things. They will send out a courier to pick up your phone, it's only a simple procedure so it shouldn't take long.

I'm slightly confused myself, the way I interpret your text is that after evaluation should you decide not to have your phone repaired then they will charge you for courier costs to have your phone returned to you. Like I said previously it should be covered by warranty so you won't have to pay a penny.
After repair, the dust problem is soughted.
Depending on how bad the dust is...take your phone and repeatedly, but lightly tap it on a table...the dust particle will eventually, make it to the edge of the screen and get "stuck there" and you won't be able to see it anymore. At least, most of the time, it will.
verkion
Dust problem does get worse..... only time I am free enough to let htc collect my phone is easter....
Mm... I will try the tap method.......

What a bummer, that's a long wait. Just so that you're aware it doesn't have to be your home address, you can use friends, family, work etc. address. The courier can just pick up/drop off even when you're not there.

Have had my G2 since release and no dust yet
tried the tap method... but nothing happen..... dust is getting closer to centre now... as more dust gets in
I don't know if this thread is still alive, i hope it is.
Well, I got my G2 just about a couple of weeks ago. Got it off kijiji, cuz the gentleman who sold it to me told me that it has warranty till september 2011, i decided to buy it. It still does have warranty. It has got 2 problems, 1 with battery, the phone is s-off, rooted, and modded with CM Nightly RC1, and the battery just runs out very quickly, i have to charge the phone atleast twice a day. and 2nd is with he screen, it has got dust underneath, on right hand top corner, so i decided to call htc directly and find out if i can send the phone off for repair, and if i could get a replacement battery.
The girl on the other side was nice enough that she is sending me a new battery, so one problem will be solved, then I asked her if i can send the phone back to them to get it fixed.
I am actually worried about 2 things. One is how do I put the stock rom back on the phone? I am not a great modder and don't really know(i think little bit research will help, as i found this thread after search) and two is i am really afraid of htc charging me for something i might not have done. such as liquid damage. physically the phone looks great. no scratches or any sort of physical dent marks. but liquid damage is something really scares me out.
what should I do?
I need some advise from my fellow xda folks... Please help me out...
As far as i know, if you grab the official firmware from bell, (i assume bell because you said kijiji and that is normally canadian), load that up and make sure your recovery is stock, htc will not even know if you had a custom rom in it.
As for the water damage, there is usually a small white sticker where the battery usually sits. This sticker changes colour if it is exposed to excessive moisture. If this sticker is still white, then you are fine.

Not actually, i got the G2 off kijiji, the tmobile version which i use for my wind mobile sim card.
I called htc directly and the girl on the other side said the phone is fixable being in canada but i m just curious and concern about the charges they might apply to fix this... i asked her specifically that if i m in canada are you sure there will be no charge for me to pay? she said, we will require your credit card which has at least a dollar value on it, just for security(which i thought is weird as i have N1 i had to sent out for repair and they didn't ask for my credit card info... i asked her and she said N1 and G2 are two different cases handled by two different operational teams, they don't require info for N1 as its a Google phone, while G2 is sold by tmobile, my cc info they will use in case if there is any liquid or physical damage and i will have to pay for at least shipment back which is $35)
regarding the sticker, i can see a small white rounded sticker underneath the battery which is fairly white so far... i assume that's the one and doesn't look like it has changed color significantly, but I am still afraid - i think i might color blind... lol... i had a problem before with rogers bb bold, where i sent the phone in for repair and they said it has got liquid damage as the sticker has turned blue and i had to pay $250 for it...
That's the reason I need suggesions from ya'll people... how can I make sure my phone is damage free and can get the dust problem fixed?
i am really scared and totally confused...

Ahh, just wanted to clarify since I didn't see any of the T-Mobile versions on Kijiji when I did my shopping.. If that's the case and you have the G2, then you should be able to pop by the T-Mobile site and grab the stock ROM off them. I also saw a list of stock roms somewhere on this site for the DZ/G2.
If the water sticker is whitish, then it's still good. As long as it's not red/pink or blue, those would be a sure sign of water damage.
The only reason why they would need a credit card, in my opinion, is for any unexpected charges that they would apply to it in the case of a necessary repair that is not covered under warranty. But other than that, I wouldn't know why else.
I hope you get it sorted out.
Regards.
Both mine and my wife's G3 have developed cracks - both in Quickcircle back replacement cases and never droped or knocked in any way. My crack is accross the mic and my wife's are along the IR blaster and headphone port. Hers is white and mine is black. I will be returning hers tomorrow but am very wary of the response I will get. I suggest anyone look closely now for any signs of this if it is likely to be of concern.
I've heard about some having problems. I think LG knows and won't give you a hard time. I double checked mine and so far so good. Good luck man.

If that flag is accurate and you live in the UK you have nothing to worry about. Its a fault, pure and simple and you have EU consumer laws on your side.
The question is where did you get it? Some stores are more accommodating than others.
same here
The same happened to me today, I got a crack near microphone and I don't know what to do. I bought this from ebay one week old and as far as I know it's a unlock device with Three branding. I have this phone around one month now and the worst part is that my brother brought it to me from the uk when he came on vacations. I don't believe that if I try to contact LG from my country (Cyprus) I will have the phone replaced. The only thing I can do is send it back to my brother in UK but the phone was bought from ebay so I believe I will have problems requesting for a replacement. I am not sure what I have to do, any suggestions guys?

I got my wife's online from carphone warehouse, so hopefully it will be OK. I just hope they don't imply the phone has been mistreated. I am going to take print outs of the many websites discussing this issue to back me up. My phone was from o2, but as it isnt so bad I'm reluctant to return it due to how much I've customised it (rooted etc). At least they haven't bent I suppose!

Carphone warehouse are scum, but buying it online actually helps. Take a bit of evidence that its common and they really cant complain.
I have the same crack at the mic.

I've seen several G3s now with a crack on the ir blaster, I'm sure LG is well aware of this issues already and they should be able to issue a warranty as this IS a manufacturers defect.
No cracks, yet. Dropped it once, with a cheap case on it. No damage.

I am aware of this article, however there is nothing else to confirm that LG have officially acknowledged it and others claim they have been met with denial when speaking to them.
calling you out, bs, this kind of damage is due to lack of care!
"crackgate" what exactly does that refer to, too much crack and dropped your phone near the gate?

2 phones - one white, one black used by different people. We are pretty boring people that nurture our phones carefully (cases, screen protectors etc). Both phones developing cracks in similar places (along openings) without a single mark or scuff anywhere else. Many other reports as well, all in the same places on the phone. This isn't one of those "my screen has spontaneously shattered" posts, so you are out of line with your comments I'm afraid.
Based upon my own (extremely unscientific) following of this issue. Many of the pictures I've seen of phones with this issue seem to somehow involve the circle case. I do not have one, do not know what sort of pressure the circle case applies to the rest of the phone... However I am not planning on getting one of these cases based upon the number of pictures I've seen with cracks and the case is in the picture (or mentioned by the person posting).

This may possibly be the cause as both our phones are in these cases. The replacement back doesn't feel any more tight fitting than the original, however and it is the only way to keep wireless charging. In any case it is an official LG product so they still have to accept responsibility if they are continuing to market them.
Man that sucks. I bought a G3 for my wife and myself and we dont have cracks...yet. I hope it was only a specific batch of these for real and they werent just saying that for good PR. Ive had my phones about 3 weeks now and so far so good. We have cases on too...
Sometimes I feel like I can easily crack the case by opening it if I have to swap sim cards. Now once I get it open at the USB port, I slide a credit card along both sides and it easily undoes the clips.
Its because of this freaking crack issue that i am scared of using the beautiful circle case..
I believe the case exerts a lot of tension/pressure on the outer body of the phone..

There's always the one guy who says if I didn't happen to me it couldn't happen to anyone else. I hope you get it replaced as I think it was a defect even though mine is fine so far. Good luck to you and your wife bro.
