Does anyone else have the problem with htc messaging where it takes maybe 10-15 seconds for a messaging thread to open?
I use my phone mainly for texting and I have a lot of texts on it even though its only 3 weeks old. So its very frustrating when I click on messaging and then on a thread, its so painfully slow. Is there a way to speed things up or is it maybe a rom thing?
Im using duttys v1.8 rom btw.
Yes, it is insanely slow at loading a thread. I have to export my messages regularly, cause as soon as I pass 100 in a thread it begins. Incredibly annoying!
So I am not the only one with this problem.
Some threads are ~350 messages long, and those are a pain in the bottom to load.
would be nice if someone could help us set a limit for the ammount of messages it shows, just like the old windows mobile 6.1
i have the same problem, but i find a sort of solution.
don't close the message application: click menu--> show all message, and stay here.
From this point there's no lag when you open threads. (like bertus i've more then 400 messages for every threads).
I personally clear them all out every so often (bout once a month) and always save anything important to a note file which is then syncronised with my Outlook via Activesync. But I admit its annoying, I get delay when there is 30 messages... lol
Just a thought but have any of you installed the SMS fix so that you can start a new SMS immediately whilst the list is loading. If not i suggest you do a search for it on the HTC website or on this one.
HTH
i installed it 2 days ago. but where's the difference?
i don't understand what it should do. '
...
Got the same problem.. Apart from the iphone, HTC is loading every conversation you have when you open the sms window.
Example iphone only loads 20 messages in 1 page, then you can choose to see older or newer messages...
HTC MUST make a fix to this soon..!!!! Its pretty annoying that it lag.
The SMS fix by HTC fixes the issue whereby you couldnt start to type a new message until the list had fully loaded. After installing the fix you can start a new message immediately whilst the list loads in the background. Hope that clarifies.
I do agree though that the messaging system in sense needs further work to improve it but this fix goes some way to improving it.
HTH.
tnx manimal i understand now.
Is really frustrating when the phone finishes to load the messages and the focus goes to the last one and you must re-select the type box for seeing what you are writing o.o'

I agree but at least you can make a start. I also noticed that even though the focus changes to the last message if you carry on typing it will insert whatever you have typed when you change the focus back the message input box.
You can type while it loads, yes, but the the typing becomes laggy and it doesn't catch half the buttons which are touched. I have tried to contact HTC about this, but there was no understanding to the issue...
By far and away the best solution to conversation lag is for HTC to do as others have suggested and only have the application load, say, the last 20 messages, or at least allow users to configure the number of messages loaded in conversation view. In truth, it could be less than that. Most of the time, all you really need to see is the message you're replying to. It'd be nice to have a halfway-house which offered this functionality. Like for example if you clicked on reply from the traditional view, it would have an option to show the message you're replying to at the top of the screen. Perhaps there is already a way to achieve this?

+1! ... The most annoying thing about the HD2... Makes me wanna throw it away and go all apple again... but then i look at the big screen
Haha.. yup, me too!
I hope, they will fix it in the next rom update.. So it doesn't load every message...
my longest conversation is around 50 messages because I prefer e-mail to sms, but although I have both sms hotfixes, it's still laggy. I don't want to know what it's like with 350 messages gj htc you failed again
is there a good 3rd party messaging program we can install to deal with this problem?
I actually think they should just go back to the regular inbox instead of htc messaging like on other windows mobile phones. that one is a lot faster although less flashy.
this is really frustrating me and I think I might give up on this great device because of the messaging lag and also because it freezes up on me at least twice a day.
Its too bad because it has a lot of potential.
I have reflashed the phone about three times with the stock rom and now have moved to custom ones which seem to be working a little better, but I am honestly getting annoyed with how much this phone freezes while in the text window. I have to do a battery pull every time because none of the hard buttons respond either. I have seen many posts and was wondering if anyone has found a fix to this. I might, however, have a bad phone. I did not but it from T-mobile, so if I brought it in to them would they even be able to replace it or how do I go about doing that?

The SMS freezing issue is widespread in this phone, I honestly don't think you have a bad piece of hardware.
One of the solutions that seems to work most frequently is to keep the number of text messages retained in your phone down to an absolute minimum (like 50 or less) at all times. Clearing them out regularly (and from the deleted folder as well) seems to have eliminated the issue for a bunch of people. If it's critical for you to retain messages longer than that would allow, I'd suggest just backing your messages up with myphone or something similar that allows you to access them off the phone.
I know that's not an ideal solution, but it seems to work. That's the strategy I use all the time, and I've never once had the sms lagging or lockup issues that so many others report.
I've been deleting all my texts as soon as they get over 20 just to minimalize the problem, everything else will start lagging as well if I let this happen. Thanks though. I hope they get a fix for this because I love this phone.
I was haVing the same issues but not as bad as you...you can also try changing the messages too standard not threaded. you can do that by selecting all messages then menu then options...also try running titanium. go to settings/all settings then select windows default I trash mine like that for a while. but what seems to have fixed my problems was just un installing cookies home tab...I mentioned to sirphunkee that in a few days I would install cookies again to see if my problems came back.
I think this MIGHT help you id the problem.
See if removing the memory card helps.
My first unit seemed as bad as yours, if not worse.
Whenever I removed the memory card, it would run SUPER smooth, so I thought to myself, maybe a higher class sdhc would do the trick?
Nope.
There is just something defective about all the TMOUS HD2s...they just fail imho.

HTC issued an upgrade today. I think this is what you guys have been waiting for. Check it out. I'm downloading it now.
ROM Upgrade for HTC HD mini
Release Date: 2010-07-08
ROM Version:1.36.707.3
Thank you very much , what the difference from old version?
thanxxx...
thanx for notifying...
Officially, these are the improvements:
1. The trimmer bar will slide smoothly while trimming the mp3.
2. Enhance the system performance and stability.
3. Improves the ringtone sound quality.
For me, only #2 and #3 are important.
I've just finished flashing the phone. Have to wait for start up and bring all my personal setup and data back to the phone.
Then i'll give it a test run to check for any noticeable improvements.
From the outset, HD mini seems to run smoothly already before the upgrade. Although i have some basic complaints about the new os and/or htc custom software.
1. Calendar from the Manila tabs is seriously crippled. When you slide to the Calendar tab, or jump to it from the Home link, it takes half a minute before the week's schedule comes up. Unlike the old WinMo 6.1 calendar or old 3rd party calendars that jumps right up without any delays. Secondly, there's no way to make duplicates of schedules. For example, i have a "corporate meeting" scheduled for today. After the day is done, another one was set for the following week. Normally, i'd just copy from today, and then paste into 7-days after. But that's impossible to do in Manila Calendar. I'd have to resort back to the WinMo Calendar, which thankfully is still lay hidden in the sub-menus, to do this very basic task. Third, it's fixed to show 7-days schedules only. Can't add more days to it. I hope HTC will take a look at this serious draw back for the otherwise wonderful phone. (This disability will frustrate business folks.)
2. Text Messaging is eye-candy. Which is good. Except, there's a huge trade off. First, the Text tab shows only last 25 messages, and not intuitive at all. It's shown in the ancient per message style. No threading. Although, you can click All Messages to go into the threaded format. Which brings us to the second biggest problem. It's extremely slow. You click on a person, and the messages will build up slowly, taking several seconds to come up one by one, depending on the volume of the conversation with that person. Third, and the worst worst part??? The old trusty speedy WinMo's own versatile text messaging app was killed off. So you're left with no alternative.
3. Contacts/People app is also seriously crippled. This used to be WinMo's ugly but super versatile function. The very attraction that draws people to WinMo. New Contacts app is either broken or buggy. You can't use cut/copy/paste functions in most of the fields, except the very basic ones. As an example, you can do the cut/copy/paste with Mobile Number, but not the rest of it, ie. Car Number, Radio Number, Home Number, etc. So it's very choosy. Of course, if you dig deeper, you're thrown back to WinMo's own Contacts app. Saved the day? No way. It's the opposite. The new weird looking WinMo Contacts do not allow any cut/copy/paste at all, except for the Notes section. I wonder why do they have to axe this very useful core functionality. But the nightmare doesn't end there. If you change a tiny thing in a particular Contact field, saving it will take ages. Basically freezing up the phone for maybe a minute or so. Most people would have probably pried open the back cover and took out the battery. (Because mini doesn't have reset button.) It really looks like the whole phone has crashed. Until, if you're patient enough to wait, and realize it's just super slow to save an editted Contact.
Apart from these 3 nuisances. The rest of the phone works wonderfully.
So, for now, i can only resort to Outlook editting on my netbook, whenever i need to work on the contacts and schedules. Then sync.
But this means, i can't do these basic stuffs real time, as needed, whenever needed. I'll have to remember all the changes of contacts and schedules for the day. And then do my homework when i get home. It doesn't happen everyday. But still a big drawback. Information tends to get lost along the way.
New ROM brings more stability to text messaging. Still super slow, but error free now. Possibly no more bugs, or eliminated to the minimum.
I got around 2000 text messages and more than 1600 contacts in my phone. Probably the reason making the Messaging and Contacts app super slow. (In HD mini, all of them are linked. Updating something in a contact will be updated all across the whole ecosystem.)
But i had more than 20,000 messages and same number of contacts in my old trusty Asus P750 WinMo 6.1 phone. And there was no slow down in either Messaging or Contacts apps. Not even editting and filling up tons of data in the notes field of a contact can put a dent to it. The Calendar app was also fast. Both WinMo's own and third party apps.
I'm back again for more observations on the new ROM update.
Thankfully, HTC brought back the "Snooze to X mins/hours/days" options whenever a schedule reminder pops up. Really wonderful. I love this.
Thank you HTC, for solving one of my major gripes on HD mini.
I hope HTC can take a look at my other gripes (see above, plus a slight problem with excel), and incorporate solutions for the next update.
Another thank you note for HTC is that, my first unit, which seem to hang a lot, was quickly replaced with a brand new unit. Not much questions asked. Now, that's quality product coupled with quality service. Very good. No wonder HTC is rising so quickly.
just updated it yesterday from the HongKong HTC website(ROM Version:1.36.721.3), i guess it's the same as the one mentioned in this post.
Infact i haven't noticed any special change or improvement after upgrading my hd mini, the sliding between different different tabs seems to be smoother, but still it'll be lagged when moving from the home screen to 9-tabs screen.
Like bart3385 said, the "Snooze to X mins/hours/days" options makes the schedule more friendly and logical(so that i won't miss up any of the coming event).
But there're still some things need to be fixed.
1.G-sensor seems to be too much sensitive= =(not that sensitive in the previous rom. Not a big problem if u aren't interested in teeter)
2.Chinese font is still terrible(when compare to the Hong Kong CHT rom), not easy to read as there's no antialiasing when the chinese character is small.(still not a problem for those who dun read/type chinese)
3.Scanty ram!!!Need to keep killing tasks.
To prepare for the upgrade, I understand that the personal data should be backed up first. That itself isn't an issue for my friend cos her data is sync'd to outlook exchange, and SMSes can be backed up via microsoft myphone.
What about programs eg bsbtweak and other apps that I installed on her phone.. Do these need to be reinstalled? If that's the case I need to bring the various cab files along as well, when I begin the labourious task of upgrading the ROM!
What she really needs is a way to desensitise the touchscreen. She finds it too sensitive

Any Asian serial number can download the ROM upgrade. HTC is just making sure you don't use this on European units, which the ROM is not intended for. In other words, avoiding mismatch.
Although i have no idea what will happen if you install an Asian ROM in a European unit. Aside from losing all the European languages. Will it work?
I have error "incorrect vender" when I install the Asian ROM in my European unit. Any solution?

I guess that answers my question. Apparently, the ROM has to match the country of the device it is intended for.
Have you tried downloading a European latest ROM from HTC site, and flashing it to your unit?

Everything will be lost when you upgrade ROM. Including apps, configurations, data, messages, etc.
You'll have to reinstall all the apps all over again.
You can use Jeyo Mobile Companion to back up your SMS instead of MyPhone. Backup to the XML format, so that you can restore all of them back to your phone. You can also backup and restore your call logs.
I always feel safer to backup things to my pc, instead of the internet.

Hey.
I'm not used to publish anything here, but i have ordered a SGS 2, and while it is on the way - i'm looking on a great danish site for reviewing mobile phones, as they are reviewing it right now, with a section covering parts of the phone every day. So far, it has been VERY promising - but today, they have found something really annoying on the phone... the SMS- and MMS-software on the phone.
It is (and i just repeat there words) like this...
"The SMS- and MMS-software works, but there really is things that should be made better next time. As this function is one of the basic parts of a phone, it is crucial to make this part really flying, in terms of usability - unfortunately it really doesn't feel like this works in reality on this phone."
"The keyboard is really precise, and is very fast. But for example is smileys inserted as text, and not converted to graphic smileys like on other phones - only first when the message is sent, it is converted, which seems odd. And it is not described anywhere, that the symbol "." calls the available smileys on, and is a very limited collection by the way."
"Another BIG minus is that the symbol "," is gone from the main keyboard, and it seems idiotic to remove one of the most used symbols from the main screen."
"The word dictionary works fine, but has a tendency to make the textbox above jump up and down, which makes you crazy over period of time."
"The mobile also supports delivery reports for the sent text messages, but these works just crazy. The phone shows a "message is sent", but if you want to see if the message is received, you have to choose details of the message. This is just not good enough, as other phones has much better ways to show this." (the SE Arc is mentioned here as a much better way to show this)
"The MMS-part is just catastrophic. When a picture is received, its not possible to zoom the picture, without saving it in gallery first. And is goes completely wrong, when a picture is sent from the phone - it is very violently pixelated at the receiver. Why, when the camera is so good????. We have tested the mobile up against others, and it clearly sends pictures as MMS, in the lowest quality. Most of the other phones is very clearly superior, compared to the SGS 2."
"Verdict!!... clearly not good enough. We recommend getting the application Handcent, which handles SMS'es MUCH better then the original program on the SGS 2. But its just not good enough, that a user has to get thirdpart-programs to get the most out of this phone, which is branded as a high-end phone. It seems like Samsung just has forgotten that this is a basic function of a phone, and it has to work. So this part of the otherwise very good phone only gets 1 out of 6 stars. It still gets a star, as it CAN receive and send SMS text messages, but thats basically it..."
A very harsh verdict from a magazine, which is otherwise very happy about the new SGS 2, and Android-phones in general. As of that, I'm not in any doubt, that they really mean this - they hate this function in the phone. Happily i'm not using this function much, so my order stays where it is - just wanted to show you other this...
If you can read any danish, it is on mobilsiden.dk
I guess they never worked out that you can download new keyboards, and that the awesome swype keyboard comes pre-installed?
To be honest
I am one of those people who don't use SMS/MMS on the newer smartphones as I dont feel the need to as I connect with my friends on facebook or just chat with the google talk or msn messenger in real time.
To me SMS/MMS is a bit outdated with mobile phones pulling your emails and social networking is a breeze
Just a thought
You dont need to read finish. Get chrome to translate for you.
Seems to me that it is more of and issue of software bugs than anything will can easily be fixed. The keyboard issues is irrelevant and there are plently of keyboard replacements on the market that will fix (smart keyboard pro, thumb keyboard, swype). And I never use stock messaging apps either as Go SMS and handcent are vastly superior. The mms bug is a little weird and should be easily fixed with software tweak.
Sent from my Xoom
Ive always used handcent anyway so no worrys
Go SMS Pro is another option, I prefer it to Handcent SMS.
AS usual one magazines review cannot be taken as the de facto standard .

These guys don't have a clue about Android.
Sorry pals but you miss the point here.
I need a unbiased review on the installed software not what I can download or install later.
Please just have a look at sense it's awesome with facebook, keyboard contacts and SMS mms function . So what can do Samsung? Just take care to upgrade the firmware because it's just not acceptable to customize a brand new phone before it can be used properly!
Take care.

But would you go and ask for a review on an iPhone, but refuse to listen to anything they said about the app store? One of the key features of Android is that it's open and you get choice...
If you want a different SMS app, go to the market, search for "SMS", and take your pick. You'll probably like one more than what was installed, as that's the wonder of choice... Same for dialer apps.
Android isn't just what you get out the box. Treat it as a canvas, and start making it your own
Heck, I'll be removing touchwiz when mine appears, as I prefer the customisation offered by launcher pro
Just wanted to add that I think their review is just bad:
On a completely stock SGS2, here are the reasons I think the messaging app is pretty good:
1. Swype comes pre-installed, just hold down on the text box, select input method, select swype, and off it goes. So it's not 3rd party software, it comes with the device. As far as keyboards go, the swype keyboard is generally MUCH faster for writing messages to friends than most keyboards could ever hope to be - and the dictionary is top class.
2. When you get an SMS, the nice lockscreen notification and Android top-bar notification systems beat the hell out of the annoying "pop-up, disturb what you're doing" systems in most non-Android phones. As far as other Android phones go, it's much the same.
3. The speed of the device makes jumping into the SMS app and browsing around much nicer than most phones.
4. MMS - do people really use this more than once a month?
This is all just personal opinion - but then, so is the review. Zero facts involved in any of this - I don't see them having completed any sort of study on SMS productivity here...
I do agree that the samsung messaging app is not as good as the stock android one . Now all we need are some talented devs to put out a vanilla android build for this beast.

I was referring to hardcore power users of MMS when I said 1 MMS per month - I've personally only sent 1 MMS ever. I don't even know if my SGS1 can even send an MMS, and I used that phone daily for a year.

But i repeat one bad review is not worth a cent three or four yes .,

Again, we're giving the Samsung Galaxy S2 a big tick for its messaging capabilities – there's a plethora of options here, and it's very easy indeed to stay connected through pretty much any method you can think of.

Not to make this a beat down or anything, but does ANYONE who uses sites like this and own an Android phone remain with manufacturer standard software without any form of customisation?? (unless of course your happy with it!)
i know a couple of girls with Android phones who don't really have a clue about its true potential in this sense, and certainly don't look on forums such as this, and use their phones as they come 'out the box'... but surely any user here could not care less about such a silly issue, as they would understand that all that was needed was a couple of clicks and POW! you've got YOUR phone the way YOU like it...
just sayin', rant over

The stock app is pretty good i think. I was an iphone user until u broke my phone and used a cheap wildfire until my contract expired. The stock app on the wildfire was terrible. I switched to go sms and didn't like it either. But as another poster said, the beauty of these phones are their ability to be completely customized. One galaxy s2 issue i have is the keyboard. Swype is ok but i can't.get used.to it.

I think the stock messaging app is freaking AWESOME. TRY LANDSCAPE MODE
Its like the galaxy tab email app. Loving it. And even thinking of porting it over to the original SGS
Just got my S$ upgraded to the lates version in my country which is 4.2.2 when I click on the dialer icon the screen freezes for 10 secs and it shows the numbers but when you press the numbers notheing happens and I guess when the program completely loads suddenly all the numbers pop up and aside from that whenever I type in a name in the messages or the contacts menu to look up someone to message or call it takes to long to load that my screen turns black and which I need to go back until I get the proper contact to be able to do some action with.... I know how to lenghten the time before it goes into energy saving mode or for screen to turn back but this is the exact problem I was staying away from since opting to get the Iphone 5... Since this has the best hardware as of the moment but to lag and freeze and sometimes even crash the phonebook or message app is ridiculous..... Sure you can do a lot of cool stuff but if it can't do this and the answer to my solution is to wait for an update just for a simple task of calling or messaging someone Samsung really brought out a half baked product. Hope you guys can help me with this because everytime I want to call or text someone I just do it on facebook a nokia 5110 would do better than this as far as calling and messaging.... Have they focused to much on the advanced features that they didn't fix the most basic elements of the phone. I had the HTC sensation, iphone 3 before that then this.. Since I'm into computers and pro open source I opted to stict with the android... but this is really pushing me to switch to Apple (who I hate but is really efficient at doing things its supposed to) or windows 8.
Help me with this problem so I don't give up on androids for my next phone I'd rather have a phone that is working lag free than the latest phone with the best specs that can't even do what it's supposed to do, basically reducing it to a bar of soap....

Help me with this problem so I don't give up on androids for my next phone I'd rather have a phone that is working lag free than the latest phone with the best specs that can't even do what it's supposed to do, basically reducing it to a bar of soap....

Hey this isn't an issue with the phone....its a problem with the update....there are a few things you can try out
1. Go to settings and go to application manager in the last tab....scroll to the 4th tab in the app manager...which is All.....and find your contact and contact storage apps.....clear their memory (note this will delete all your contacts....so backup) and retry accessing contacts as usual.
2. Usually the first step helps...if it doesn't... try to do a factory reset of your phone.....(This will delete all your app data....so backup)
3. You could also try to reflash the same firmware or a better update via odin.... Google and XDA are your friends so search the forums....there are many good tutorials.
4. Finally if you still feel like this isnt the answer...i suggest you to root your phone and install a new custom firmware....lots of good tutorials and roms on the XDA forums so check it out. If you dont know about rooting....approach with caution as this will void your warranty....
So try these out...hope it gave you some idea good luck!!
