Custom ROMS and OTA updates - Nexus One General

It was my understanding that replacing the stock ROM will mean that my phone will not get the automatic OTA updates. Someone posted in another forum that that isn't true. Only certain ROMS will prevent me from getting it. Is this true? I realize this isn't the DEV forum but I didn't want to clutter it up with such a newb question.

Installing a Custom ROM means you will NOT receive OTA updates via Google.
Dont worry though
ROM developers will INCLUDE these updates into their roms, so you still "get" the update. It's just not OTA. Google releases the source code which is awesome.
Right now the custom roms are riding "leaked" updates, so technically we are ahead.
My own opinon, but I wouldnt be surprised if Google uses the Custom ROM world as a somewhat free beta testing community. It would make sense at least from a cost/risk perspective. I may be totally wrong here though, 100% opinion.

I Don't think you are far off with that one, the cost is zilch, because once you unlock the bootloader, it's your responsibility. Google said they want to fix the trackball colour problem, well left to the open source developers, it is almost done! I don't know why the stock kernel isn't highmem, but i think they will take a page out of cyanogen's kernel for a future update.

Meh, never mind, it was second or third hand information, i should learn to check sources before repeating what other people have said. Nothing on android help forums.

I've seen multiple pages in google's nexus forum asking about trackball colors. Which most of them followed with a reply by someone from google claiming "it's being looked in to".

That's not entirely correct...
The reason why you don't get the update is because the SystemUpdater app is removed in a custom rom (it should be).
If the Rom dev forgets to delete the SystemUpdater app you WILL receive the update! Your phone will not be able to install it and will download the update again and again with a very high data bill as a consequence.

Aye. I've learned that every time someone on a forum says something "official", 9 times out of 10 it's not true. Usually they're just quoting someone ELSE

Android 2.1 for the Eris

I heard some rumors flying around of a 22nd release date. Maybe this thread can organize all of that.
?
Yeah...we have all heard rumors and what not.....
Not sure there is anything we can organize or do...
Just wait until the 22nd and hope
My source at Verizon told me that via an internal email 2.0 is coming to the Eris at the end of January. They have not set a date for the release yet, but when they do, I will post an update for everyone.

I was given the Jan. 22nd date also from a Verizon Tech when I was having trouble authenticating my back in the beginning of December. She didn't say what the update would be though.

That was issued to fix one bug. The one where your phone locks up on you at the lockscreen and you have to pull the battery.
There's still one coming on the 22nd that fixes a lot of other bugs. It won't be 2.1.

rooting 2.1 with sense on eris?
i hope i'm not the only one to think of this but:
if firmware 2.1 does come out on the 22nd of january, what does this mean to all the work done rooting firmware 1.5? because i'm pretty sure the problems with rooting the eris is not necessarily with fw1.5 but the sense UI thats layered on top of 1.5
even if 2.1 does come to the eris, it'll probably be a watered down version of fw2.1 because the hardware on the eris is not really optimized for 2.1 and it'll probably have a newer tweaked sense UI built upon the code from 1.5
i hope this is not a draw back but it's something to think about
It depends on the kind of attack we end up using. If we end up attacking the linux kernel directly, I doubt there will be time to plug the holes at this point. The bootloader / updater stuff, though, might be more risky, and I've been wondering about this for a while now. Guess we just have to wait and see which attacks come to fruition.
no kernel source code
i see what you're saying but htc hasn't released the source code for the kernel. i think thats what the senior members of this forum (acidbath5546, ataranine, rigmrt, etc.) are trying to get from htc through those emails. so the method of "attack" must be something else. unless of course those Mod edit: Employees at htc decide to allow us to use our devices the way we want
i'd love to contribute but i'm soo dame busy watching hulu, they've got some great stuff over there
Really, guy?
Either way, the way we're currently attacking it is like this: we know that a vulnerability was discovered on a certain date, and patched on a date after that. Fortunately, both of these dates are well after the date that the current version shipped, meaning that the target kernel must be vulnerable. Obviously this security flaw has been patched, and will do us no good in the future, but at least it's a start in our workflow.
yep

We have been trying...and Htc is sorta hearing us...
I just got word from someone at Engadget Mobile that Htc has heard us and seen the threads and emails..
And like they did on the Hero, they will release kernel code...its just a big machine over there...so we do owe them a bit of patience..
But it is good to know they heard..
Amazing what we can do as a community!

Yeah... I saw that. Little skeptical though because once you trace the source back to handhelditems they say someone got that info from a webchat with Sprint. We all know to think twice about those! lol It does seem to line up with that April 9th update that's been floating around though. Who knows...
Hopefully this is true and not another april fools prank. It was about a week-week and a half ago they rumored it would release in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed.................
With all the sprint leaks we have been getting I think it might be getting close.
But who knows
I already have it thanks damage

don't worry, Sprint will just repackage one of the XDA roms as their own and use it as the official update
ive said it once ill say it again the april 9th update is a maintenance release to fix mms issues not 2.1
sprint hasnt told us anything beyond that
any new news on an "official" release date? im hearing either the 9th or 26th of this month? i don't get why sprint is soo tight lipped about this?
also when is the nexus & evo launching on sprint?

with alot of tweaking to do after the initial install, yes your right.
i hope when the final comes out and we get custom roms, we won't have to apply any fixes. this is one reason im back to 1.5 for now. i have faith in the devs here, they do great work!
Why do we keep creating threads on this issue. It is a waste of space. It will come when Sprint is ready to release it. They have never given an exact date. People get so pissed because they haven't sent an update. Well guess what. When you bought your phone it had 1.5. They are not required to update it to 2.1. Either use a custom ROM or shut up and wait until it comes out. Then when it comes on don't get on here complaining about how crappy the release is.
I have Fresh 2.0d and it is working very well.
----------------------------
Shut up and wait
Running: Fresh2.0d
Developing:WarpedMetal (T minus 2 weeks)
Just got out of a sprint chat. this is what they're saying
honestly no thread can "waste space" as well we have plenty of it. I wasn't complaining nor *****ing about it. I am more happy with the legend based roms then the leaked Sprint roms but when the official Rom hits it will help with more development to fix issues and get faster roms out there. honestly if you don't like these threads the easy thing to do is stay out of them. no one is forcing anyone to read the forum or a certain posts. forums are for talking that is there main and only reason for existing.
damn I hate trolls.

Does Sprint use any automated responses on the chat support? I know there's quite a few companies that do, the program just selects a basic response to generic questions about that subject, and it seems like the responses that are given by these reports are way too "computery" to be coming from a human. So I'm guessing that the system Sprint's chat support uses has a list of responses pop up based on key words in the client's question.
Probably way off base, but it'd almost make sense based on how similar the responses are in all these chat transcripts.

Hope!

Eh, his point is you can already do that, and in his defense, he is pretty much right. However, we cannot modify the kernel, and thus cannot have a true Rom, this is something I would like to be able to do.
Once the bootloader is unlocked/bypassed we will then be able to have true built from source Rom's/Kernels and unlock the true potential of the DX. Cyanogen has said he will support the Droid X/2 once its unlocked, CCR is already building an AOSP Rom but with the Moto kernel for obvious reasons so there is hope on the horizon. A leak of the "Sierra Bravo Foxtrot" will be found, then the fun begins for everyone as we will all have a way back to safety.

So to sum it up:
We can already customize the Droid X like any other android phone on the market (remove bloatware, theme frameworks, play with root priveleges, etc)... but some ppl are wanting more.
The ppl that are wanting more... are wanting to get to the brains (kernel & bootloader) so they can build a ROM from scratch, get some CM lovin, TRUE overclocking, BF scheduling, UV'ing, TRUE recovery, etc.
I understand that... and always understood it lol. I just always wondered why I saw so many posts asking for things that can already be done.. and have been.

You'd think it would be on rapidshare or something by now if that was the case. I find it really hard to believe that 2.2 sbf has been leaked at all.
Do a google search for "droid x 2.2 sbf" and look at your first couple hits.. you will see that the moderators have removed the posts because of threats they received from motorola.
as for improving our chances of finding it we need the actual file name..
Get the file name and we have just up'd our chances by 10x.

I think you've completely misunderstood what AOSP and OTA are. AOSP is basically the source code which ROM cookers (Paul O' Brien, Cyanogen etc) use to build their own ROMs. OTA is an update from, in our case Google, which updates a stock ROM to Gingerbread. Also the person who said this is in charge of the Android AOSP project so he's hardly some random person

No, too many people don't understand what they're reading. Building GB in AOSP is the first step. That has to happen before any kind of OTA is even built, much less tested and pushed out to devices. So doing your checkin is rather pointless, because they're at step 2 or 3, and you're at about 8 or 9. And the Tweet is from an official, confirmed Google staffer.
So again, too many don't understand what they read and want to sound like they're somebody.

Becase that's the route they've chosen to go this time. Do they have to? No. They didn't with Froyo. But with GB they're doing AOSP first.
My guess is they've got a GB device already, and don't need early OTA releases to build hype.

Yes and no, lol. Google will push an OTA out to N1 devices at some point. We all know that. It could start today, it could start next week. No one really knows.
Now that the source is in AOSP, ROM developers here (and elsewhere, I suppose) will begin using the source to compile custom ROMs. You may start to see those before an OTA, you may see an OTA first.
As for what works? LOL, hopefully they all do, and hopefully they'll be bug-minimalized. (Is there such a thing as bug-free??)

Question about this:
Do you not need at least a leaked ROM to extract the necessary "proprietary files" before building? Sorry if this is a noob question. Just curious.
It means they not going to waste their time with the nexus one and let us build our own rom. That mean OTA for nexus user, no time soon. We'll see a custom rom first before we see a OTA. Nexus S is their baby now not Nexus one.
Imho even a vanilla AOSP rom would be great waiting for official OTA...

Those in the beta program had to sign a non-disclosure agreement with ZTE. So close your eyes and imagine Nougat. That's what it looks like.
Can a moderator please close this thread? According to the NDA that somehow got posted on here, people that are a part of the beta program are not even allowed to tell people they are a part of the beta program. Fishing like this just seems to get people wound up over nothing.

Yes is weird they had to make a NDA in that case a stock android appearance would not hurt anyone

nobodys talking about classified stuff about nougat here we're just speculating we're going off topic now
If I was ZTE I would've done a completely public beta or leaked it myself. Hype is free marketing and for a no-carrier phone it's the only way to get people to buy.
Don't worry my good sir, the release is closer than you think.
Sent from my ZTE A2017U using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Can't wait for it ?
Hurrah for the imagination then at least I know I am not the only one on the hype train hopefully ZTE won't disappoint us.
