has anybody had to clean their trackball yet? i don't need to but im sure one day i will. anybody attempted to take it apart and do it at all?
These things have a trackball?
Not to change the subject, but folks find using trackball more convenient than swiping the screen? I guess if you're used to a Blackberry Curve or something it's an old habit.

i don't really use it or see why htc put it there but like the BB we will eventually have to clean it.
I've taken mine apart to blow the dust out from under the screen a couple of times. It's not that difficult actually. There's a great tutorial at Android Central in the Sprint Hero forum.
http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/22036-sprint-htc-hero-disassembly-diy.html
The trackball is stuck in a housing so you can't actually take it out, but you can roll it around and wipe what you can.

if they make a 2nd gen hero i want no trackball.
I just use a little rubbing alcohol. Although I've heard that it hurts to put alcohol on your balls.
It seems difficult to completely get rid of it. We need some form of hardware navigation for utilities like recovery.

Your wish has (pretty much) been granted haha. The Legend has been rumored to be Sprint's Hero 2 (still very much a rumor) but it makes sense. Optical trackpad included.
But on a more related note, I too have had my phone apart to dye the housing black and to clean the dust out, and the trackball is indeed in its own little housing as was mentioned above, and it can be cleaned pretty easily with some rubbing alcohol

I'm planning on cleaning the dust out of my Hero this weekend. How fragile are the connectors when you disconnect them etc.? Because I REALLY cannot end up damaging my phone

It isn't actually white, its made out of a single piece of aluminum (thats the color too lol).
Aluminum design. Yep. I've never had my hero apart because I'm too scared to take apart my phone... I don't know what I would do if I bricked it I just complain to Sprint so they do it.

The only problem with the design is that you're probably stuck with the stock battery size. And although they may make a somewhat higher capacity in the stock size, you're not going to be able to upgrade to a Seidio 3500 mAh battery or some other behemoth sized battery.

I just used some black RIT dye. I think it looks purrdy
You can use RIT powdered dye, I used to sell Touch Pro backs in about a dozen colors. very easy to do, but make sure you don't overheat the housing or it'll curl up on you.

Hi,
Unfortunately, today I scratched my phone. To the left of the trackball I have a somewhat minor scratch in the metal chassis of the device. It's not as deep as an engraving would be on the back of the phone. So I am hoping it can be removed easily. Has anyone had experience with removing scratches from the metal or maybe even removing engraving ? I really want to fix this :-(
Probably those polishing stuff works, but i've only tested them on the iphone's chrome sides. But they're only good for removing hairline scratches
Battery acid, also that DIY stylus might help too if you rub it on there hard enough.
But seriously, try car buffer or if it isnt rooted just tell HTC that your phone is getting horrible 3g service and you want a replacement

I've heard of people using a gray-ish permanent marker...
Either way, once you get it fixed up, I highly suggest getting a BSE (or another skin).

Only $8. And I'd say worth more than 10 times that for how good it looks and protects!

It looks even better with a BSE on, trust me.
My buddy at work got an N1 and we put ours side by side. Everyone agreed that mine looked WAY better. The BSE gives it a badass gun metal look Check out the link at the top of the Poll thread to see pics of it "in action".

While ur install was definitely first rate..a lot of us like the stock, matte finish as well as the feel of the phone. So it's just a matter of preference.
That being said I'd at least use a screen protector.

Yeah it's pretty nice. It's better then looking at that chipped disaster.
Mine chipped back in January. I had the phone for only 2 months. I got Sprint to replace my phone after scraping the chipped paint off and I didn't like it. My wife's phone did the same thing after 1 month. But, I will admit, it looks better with the paint scraped than chipped.

Yep, how did you manage to scrap your paint off?
It took a while, but I used my nails and a coin. I would pick at it throughout the day. I was careful not to scratch the face of the phone.

Thank you! (Sorry to hijack the thread.. I'm sure the buttons look sweet!)
And now, back to your regularly scheduled 'physical mods!'
I'm not sure about your EVOs, but if I press in on my lens, slowly and evenly, I can feel it flex in and out, which leads me to believe it's made of plexi-glass. Thus, making the lens weak, and easier to scratch and crack. Seems like HTC went ****ty on this part too.
I love Android, and I don't really know why. I almost want an iPhone 4, but I enjoy my 23% Sprint discount.
Mine isn't scratched or cracked, yet, and I don't use any sort of case, but the photos and video quality still stucks ass. This is just my observation. I have H0003, btw.
Do what I did, just cut a perfectly round piece of clear scotch tape and put over it. Instant and free lens protector. Took me a couple of tries to get it perfectly round, but you can't even tell it's there. Problem solved
Android has nothing to do with the camera lens.
Similarly, hardware issues with one phone have nothing to do with switching OSes entirely.
It's like non sequitur-ville around here. Just teasing, but yes, I suspected the same, especially if you look at how easily it picks up small scratches. It's not glass, I'd guess it's the same plastic that old phones used to have as their screens. But at least the whole back panel can be replaced fairly easily if needed (if you can find a replacement).

Easy for you to say, Giotto.
Yep...it's plastic. No case on my phone and no screen protector. Looks just like it did when I bought in Jun 4th. YMMV
I haven't had any issues with pics looking bad, i think it does amazing actually. I don't use a case either and I haven't noticed any marks on mine. That piece of plastic you are talking about is not the lens though, it is a lens protector. The lens is the small bluish/black part inside. It is pretty common for those to be plastic. I break them all the time at work (people aren't allowed to bring in cameras, even on a phone, so they break them) and I think all the phone cameras i have seen were plastic protectors.
Edit: I just found this in another thread: http://www.lensrentals.com/news/2008.10.30/front-element-scratches

I'm surprised no one has gotten this reference, or made a mention of it.
I'm guessing you're thinking of the Giotto that drew a perfect circle for the Pope when the Pope asked him, "now what can you do to show me your badass artistic skills?"
Only reason I know him? That was referenced on my application to Rice a while back (it's been 4.5 years since I graduated).
What's the problem? You question HTC's build quality?
Enjoy the EVO for 2 years or 1 and then get an EVO 2.

Wasn't this whole Evo 2 / Sabor thing pretty much accepted as a fabrication?
Well I finally have everything set up the way I like it internally. But of course I can't stop tinkering just because I'm done with my software. So now I am thinking about doing so external modifications to my device.
I know this will void my warranty. Not concerned about that. It its voided already due to a few unfortunate drops and a lost battle with some moisture.
I saw one modification to the case already. Someone had sanded all of the black paint off of that case to expose the red plastic. Think this might be my first step. Something I was really anxious to try was changing out the leds for the bottom for keys (home/menu/back/search.) Need some feedback on this though. Has anyone tried it yet? Questions? Comments? Concerns? Anything at all.

Thanks for the link. Couldn't seem to find anything on it.
I am not sure if I am going to do that battery cover. Just the part of the case between the main body and the battery cover. That thin flat black strip. I don't know if the battery cover is red underneath.
And you are exactly correct. Knock off the paint with a lower grit. Then polish it up with some 1000 or 2000 grit. Maybe a little bit of wet sanding.

That mod with the battery pins and contacts from an old phone instead of wire would give a very OEM look.
not so sure about replacing the leds under the bottons, but i'd like to change the charging/notification light. think i remember seeing it changed to blue/white to good effect.
For a while i was talking about painting my hero....well i got the balls and started. I am not finished as i have only done half of the front and the back still needs smoothed out. Everything works fine and suprisingly, ever since i disassembled and reassembled the touch screen is actually more responsive. I will upload pics and if someone wants to do it themselves i will also add the instructions and what tools you will need.
