Anyone remove stuff from /data/data on our phones? - Hero CDMA General

I was using root explorer to go around things and noticed that I have com.htc.android.footprints in there...
Can I just remove this since Fresh 1.1 removed footprints already?
Any reason why some things are left in the /data/data partition of the phone.
Thanks,
-Nigel

Getting Parsing errors?

I did normal nandroid backups everytime i make changes to the phone.
Howerver I Was using root explorer and was deleting things out of /data/data because Fresh1.1 doesn't use it/have things that I wanted to take out.. such as the data file for NFL, widgets..etc.
So I deleted all these. Thinking it was fine. And I still think it has no affect but when I went to install a apk from the sd card I get a parsing error.
At first I thought it might have been just that one file... but I uninstalled better root emulator and then tried to reinstall it and got that error msg.
So I reverted back to a backup I knew is good, but get the same error when trying to install APK from the sd card get the parse error.
Thanks,
-Nigel
Um... Go back to your last good nandroid... And delete the apks through ADB... (the correct procedure... Not how you did it.) Search the forums for "removing sprint apps" and follow the directions..
What it sounds like you did was mess up the directory structure.

I have removed the apps via ADB but what I am saying is there is still data about the programs in the data/data directory. I deleted that stuff not thinking that it might affect it... Guess it did..lol not sure though..
Going to delete it via ADB and see what happens after I wipe the phone.
All nandroid backups that I know are good are still giving me the same error.

Wow, looks like the memory card was the culprit...???
I changed out to a different 4 gb card and all the programs that were failing are installing just fine...
I was using my RedHat machine at work so I wonder if **** got screwed up?
Welp... maybe looks like no restore for me..lol

Wow.. That sucks man, sorry.
Did you pull your SD card while the phone was running? (assuming you have a2sd)?

I got the same errors trying to restore paid apps into flipz 2.0.1 ROM yesterday. Im certain its not a SD card issue but I don't know how to move forward. I am going to D/L the Eris 2.1 ROM and see if my apps how up there. If not i guess i will just deal with it. Not sure my apps2sd was working in that one either because my internal memory kept going down when I D/L an app, but I had way less apps than on Modaco and my internal mem never went down. *shrug* oh well, lets check out this 2.1
Na I never pulled the card out while phone was on.
Not sure if my linux box at work did it or the fact that I was deleting files from /data/data in root explorer... I think it's the second thing that I was doing... :-(
I did end up doing a factory restore last night and redoing it. This time though when I was deleting programs I also did the proper way in adb shell to delete the files in /data/data. I can't get over even if you delete the APKs/odex in system/apps, it still leaves files and a data base file in the data/data directory.
Anywho, so far everything is running great and I freed up even more memory on the other partition because of the data/data and I can't get over how fast the phone is!
w00t w00t!

FYI,
I figured out how to get my apps to restore on the 2.0.1 flipz ROM. I had to go into titanuim backup and go to problems, which downloaded an updated busybox. Once I did that I went and tried to restore a paid app and WHOOO WHOOO, it worked.

Storage issue

well i am having problems with the market again. i cleared the cache and it didnt help. it says my app can be downloaded because of "Insufficient storage available" is there anything i can do to fix this??
I have 123MB of internal storage and i am running Darktremor A2SD
Would a partition repair work??
do you know how to use adb or have a root files explorer.
I think it happens because a directory is left behind in /data/data
You need to figure out if there is a directory in there for your app and delete it. Problem is sometimes the app name and the file name are completely different but you should be able to figure it out.
There could be stuff left behind in the /data/dalvik-cache too but I don't think the Market has a problem with that.
Finally there is the actual app itself in /data/app but your problem normally happens because that file got deleted and the directory in /data/data didn't
I have this same problem occasionally. I will go to update some apps in the market and one will end up being unsuccessfully installed. What I do is uninstall the app from the applications menu in settings, then clear the the market cache and defaults and uninstall updates. That usually works for me. Also, if you happen to have a TI backup of the app, you should be able to restore it from there.

ok i know alittle. i will try

bloatware

how do i remove blockbuster? etc? do i have to root?
sorry for asking dumb question. i am new to android and a new verzion customer
IF you've rooted your phone, then the easiest way is to buy Root Explorer (trust me it's worth the couple bucks) and navigate to /system/app and find blockbuster.apk or whatever it's called. Click mount r/w and longpress, then delete it. Or rename it to .bak instead of .apk
There is another way to do it using ADB, but if you're new to Android it's probably a bit more complicated than buying the app. If you wanna know how to do it on adb just let me know.
edit: Also, welcome to the Android side.
lol thanks....
i think i already rooted. im using DroidXRoot to rooted the driod x. i just install root explorer and its not working.
blockbuster.apk cannot be renamed because the file system is read-only.
Do you guys know where the files for the bloatware 3G Hotspot are? I would prefer to use wifi tether vs the included app.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Hide it then. You don't HAVE to use it.
Also when you get the read only message, as was previously stated, you have to mount it as r/w rather than read only.

3g hotspot is mynet.apk

Press mount r/w in the upper right hand corner or root explorer.

Just watch out what you delete...I wasn't able to update to froyo because it was missing system apps. I ended up having to reinstall the system apps and resetting all of the permissions.
Now I just use LauncherPro to hide stuff. If you are dead set on removing them though, I am sure most of us would recommend only renaming the apk files instead of deleting. While you can definitely reinstall them, it tends to be a pain. Also, I heard that removing some apps would cause a boot loop. Haven't experienced it myself, but something to watch out for I guess.
Use launcher pro to hide as well

I accidentally deleted the Conversations.apk... for future reference how do you reinstall system apps and reset permissions?
Thanks in advance,
Brandon
Instead of renaming or deleting apps/bloatware, just use "Titanium Backup" donate version and you can freeze apps/bloatware so they don't load up. This way if you want to update the phone later, you don't have to worry about things you deleted that need to be on the phone for the update to work.

This is the tutorial that I used below from android forums

[Q]Internal memory

hi, my legend is running low on internal memory and i would like to know if there is any way to explore it i already checked installed apps and there is no way that i have only 8mb left with few apps,i think the system stores old installers and such somewhere because the memory keeps getting lower everyday
Which rom are you using?
using stock 1.31 with few mods :/
Yeah, I found that I ran out of internal memory pretty quick so I followed the instructions on this board to root it with a rom that had a2sd (apps to sd card).
You could do that, or you could just hold off as Froyo (Android 2.2) will have that feature. No idea how long you'll be holding off for though.

i have to try to implent a2sd in my rom because i dont wanna backup everything
You could try Androot (soft root)(search for it) and then get root explorer and then delete any APK's left on the device from using HTC sync, they should be stored in DATA/DRM/TMP (or something like that ).
My friends Legend was down to 15mb and removing all the stuff that had been installed via HTC Sync, got him back to over 100mb free (dam Swype beta's and iGO8 ).
HTH.

Is there any way to remove the carrier bloatware and such through with Androot and Root Explorer?
I tried deleting the Teeter.apk and .odex file for example with Root Explorer (mount r/w active of course), it yet it's still in the programs list and it runs. If I reboot my device and return in the /system/app folder it's back.

for stock app you have to use this method
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...apps-from-the-htc-desire-with-adb-in-windows/
but you have to do it before first boot of the rom else you will get some kind of errors (they just show up as "false" null or something like that if you try to add widget or something)

Is there a way to free up space?

I'm currently running cmylxgo stock desire rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901576 and am loving it but have one issue. Lately I've been getting alerts that my phine is low on space. I delete any unused apps but pretty soon ill have to delete ones I use. Is there a way to be able to download as many apps as I want or delete any of the stick apps ill never use like facebbok, twitter etc.....or does anyone know if any of his other roms allow for more space?

Search for 'move to SD'.
Search the Market for App 2 SD
App to sd opened up about 25% more memory. Thanks guys
You can also try Darktremor a2sd script. It should allow you to move not only apps that can be moved to SD card but every apps along with the dolvik cache and user data files.
I haven't tried it on my HD2 yet and I know its still in beta, so I can't guarantee you whether it will work or not. But at least it worth a try. If u wanna try it do a nandroid backup first, just in case it mess something...

You can delete unused stock apps by purchasing an app called 'Root Explorer' from the market (or install any root-enabled file explorer really, i just like root explorer the best lol) and delete the .apk file of whatever app you don't want from /system/app directory of your phone. If your rom loads the system to ram memory, you also will have to delete the .apk from /system/ram/app directory or it will re-appear

I got root explore and did the following. clicked on root explorer then went into sysytem then app and deleted the facebook and twitter apk. They still appear in my apps though. Is there something elseim supposed to do?
Still no instructions on how to delete stock apps via root explorer? I found this on the thread to my rom but dont know how to install it. I got it on my desktop but now what? Can anyone help?
If you wish to gain an additional 27MB for apps in /data/ you can install the my new partition layout MAX[Build.v1.1.7]. This is NOT required and you can use any of my other partition layouts with build v1.1.7. However if MAX[v1.1.7] partition layout is used with older builds your Phone will not boot. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
