Compass recalibration trick - HD2 General

Hey .. maybe I found something new.
As far as I know you can't force compass recalibration. I only saw the screen first time I run the compass app. Even magnets close to my HD2 wont show the screen.
And it seems it would be needed. My compass very often shows clearly wrong heading.
And now the trick .. the recalibration works all the time, even without the screen ! Simply do the 8 move .. and the compass will start to show correct heading !
I'm running 1.43 rom btw.

When doing 8move, do you keep phone in vertical or horizontal position? Or does it matter at all?

It's easier to show then to describe:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP3d00Hr14o
Though I do it a bit slower.
Now I found there are more methods. Clearly nobody really understands what's going on. But this method above works for me.

got it, thanks

wait what? How is this a trick? HTC compas clearly says to do this if its not calibrated. What is going on around there?

I was hoping this thread was going to be a way of starting the compass without geting that annoying calibration screen.

Then you didn't read the thread... The OP was saying that sometimes even if the compass wasn't saying calibration was needed, it would show wrong resullts, so he was looking for a way to "force" calibration.
I work with industrial electronic compasses, and calibrating them usually involves turning them in all "3D" directions so that they can register max/min values on all axes. I do the same with my HD2 and it works well.

Yes .. the 'trick' is in that you don't have to see the screen and recalibration work all the time, not only after showing the screen.

It don't work
I tried to hard resset and many other things. There's no way of Digital Compass work for me. When I move the phone as 8, the maximum I get is a blank screen. (maybe it's because flip it software) but no mather how I try, never could use digital compass.
Anyone has a tip, a cab, or anything to help me make it work ? Thank you

Compass Device Sensor
Hi llucas
There is a software call "Z-DeviceTest" in google play store , it is a free app , you can download and check what sensors are avaiable in your device. If you have compass in your device, you should get "Tick" (refer -> device1.jpg ) on the compass Icon , if not you will get a"X Cross" (refer -> device2.jpg ) on the compass icon.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
yes it did, but I switched it off, cause it was too nervous. Brightness changed all the time when lonely clouds were passing, or the the cloudy thumb cast a shadow.
S.
Yes it works!:
Use Shagctrl to lower brightness and then switch it on. The brightness level you chose will be the minimum level.
If you cover the sensor in the top right-hand corner, the screen will dimm. When you aim you flashlight on it, it will brighten.
(at least... mine does...)
However, I don't use it, because my hand will frequently get in the way when I use the touchscreen and then my screen brightens suddenly... Verry anoying.

Hi,
this is a different question, but I didn't want to open another thread.
Who can confirm this?
Vista is running in the "background". Your are in WM, but have shut-down WM. So dark screen. But then exactly when Vista goes into standby (green light starts to blink) the WM screen comes to live.
Is that strange? Or just always the case?
Thanks!
S.

Hi Pantaloonie,
this looks like capital punishment for me, so sorry! Next question from several feet under.
Let me explain:
I am rather a newbie using forums like this, means the does and do nots are not always clear. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!
My thoughts were 1. the point was answered and 2. there are so many items on the site that it is not necessary to always start a new thread for every minor problem.
Wrong thinking?
Please, I really do not know, can you clarify? Do you really start a new thread for everything?
Thanks!
S.
Heh, I was just having a bit of fun, you did nothing wrong. Some forums can be very strict about keeping threads on topic, but we are pretty relaxed here.
The advantage of starting a new thread is that more people will see it, you're more likely to get an answer.

Rotation issue

Hello everyone, my name is Nick and this is my first post in this great forum. I have been using the TD2 for some months now and i think it's a really great phone!
The only problem i've come across so far is that the G-Sensor rotates the screen in some applications i'd rather see horizontal like the phone dialer and the Sim Toolkit service. It's really annoying to see the screen rotating when i am talking on the phone because it messes up the screen too!
I've tried many programs like Gyrator 2 or G config but none of them seem to do what i want. I don't want to disable the G sensor of the phone cause it's really useful when browsing or writing messages.
Any ideas of how to solve this? Thanks in advance!
I use Gyrator and disabled everything i don't wan't to be turned, works perfect!
It looks like you didn't set-up Gyrator properly, read the manual carefuly.

When you look in Gyrator Events you will see this list:

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Make sure that everyting that you don't wan't to rotate is listed above Rotate.
You can add new events (click and hold on a blanck section) and put them higher in the list by click and hold them and chose Promote.
If you don't know wat you should enter in a event for a non-rotating event just look, by editing (click and hold and chose edit) in a excisting Disable(***) event, i did to.
Good luck!
I tried that too but i just keeps rotating when i turn the device.
I created a new event and checked "Orientation", i named it "Disable (Dialer)" and promoted it above "Rotate". Then i edited it like that: Application=Phone, Orientation=Portrait (or landscape, i tried everything on the list), Actions=Rotate Screen (or nothing checked, i tried both) but it still doesn't work. I even tried disabling the HTC dialer and using the WM one but nothing changed. I'm starting to believe it's haunted!

Phone Keypad Disappears!

What can I do to fix this? Restarting the phone always fixes it (although that's not really a "solution" per se), sometimes restarting the phone app fixes it. Sometimes the keypad is there, but is up and to the right (off the edge of the screen, covering the leftmost side of the list of calls).
i think i had the same problem. try changing to landscape and back to normal.

My phone dialer doesn't rotate...
Yes, annoying this. I got the problem the other day then things went back to normal after a soft boot. I am aware that rotating the app does fix the problem (until the next time) but have never tried it.
To get your phone app to rotate, install BSB Tweaks. Once done select the phone app as an item to be rotated which should give you what you are looking for.

Thanks, this fixed it!
Wondering if there's been a better solution uncovered to this than "rotate the phone". That's not very fluid since the phone tends to rotate/unrotate in call and the keypad disappears again, making using menu options in voicemail (for example) much more of a pain than it needs to be.
Don't even understand how this is a problem, given that my TP2 had the same dialler and had no problems...
Bump ...
No chance for a response here...?

Still hoping for a reply...
Try overwriting the dll posted by fards with total commander or resco. Using wm 6.5 myself so haven.t tested.

SOLVED: Compass and G sense no longer work - help please ?

Hi,
I've had my Hero on Orange UK now for about 1 month.. I have been using various compass apps and even the spirit level apps.
All was fine until last week when I tried to use the compass and it failed to work/move..
I tried the spirit level apps and they have stopped working...
Is there a way to test the compass and G sensor to make sure what is happening ?
I did wonder if the driver may have been corrupted while I was trying the various apps. I have a lot of apps now on the phone, including paid for sat nav etc. It's my work phone and don't really want to send it back to Orange (or HTC) unless it is the last resort as it is needed daily..
Is there a soft reset that will reload the drivers ?
Any help would be appreciated
Have you tried resetting your gsensor calibration in Settings --> Sound and Display?
I didn't know we had a compass?... where?

I did have difficulty finding the calibration setting, seems a strange place to put it !
Anyway, I've now run the cal for the G sensor and it goes through the motions etc and says calibrated.
I guess if it physically didn't work it would throw up a failed to calibrate type error messge.
I just down loaded a simple spirit level prog (after taking all my similar progs off incase one of those was causing problem).
If I use the calibration setting on that it doesn't even move, that is what is making me feel more inclined (Could be a joke there !) to think that it is the drivers that are faulty and HTC's G sensor cal works at a lower level....
ddotpatel: The compass facility is (was !) very good. Some of the apps are better than others and are faster to respond. Just type in compass in market place, loads of free ones to try..
I really could do with finding a full original driver pack to re install. That may cure my problem...
Failing that, is there a proper SOFT RESET for the Hero, not just power off or take battery out. Something that forces it to reload drivers etc...
Thanks again for taking the time out to reply..
Phil-w
Ok,.... Next thing to do is to uninstall all compas applications,... Then reboot,... then calibrate gsensor again,... then reboot,... install compas app, try again.
If that still fails,... I'd run an RUU to restore back to factory set.
RUUs can be found in the sticky at the top of the development section,...
[ROM] Official HTC Hero RUU ROM + Radio Links
Well that did the trick,
4 re cals and re boots then downloaded new compass app, works a treat now.
I will have to keep checking if all is well. Try the same trick again if not....
Thanks
Phil
p.s it did come up this time with aborted calibration a couple of times but now seems stable.
Glad it helped pal.
Do us a favour, edit the title in your 1st post and put [SOLVED] at the start or end of it.
Peace.

[Q] camera g-sensor orientation issue.

Hello everybody.
I just bought note 4, but i found a stupid issue, the g-sensor in camera is wrong calibrated.
When i hold the phone vertically, the spot in surround mode or virtual tour shows wrong place.
P.S.
My device is new without root.
Tried other same devices, same issue. Others doesn't.
I tried sensor calibration apps. No result.

Any idea?
Does Surround mode even work in vertical position? I assume you have no problem using it horrizontaly.
I thought I replied to this, but I don't see the reply anymore
That's normal... it just means your camera isn't level - move it up to the circle and it'll start taking pictures .

I don't think he wants an up - down surround, but rather a left - right.

Surround mode will do up, down, left, and right - it's a 360 pano, like PhotoSphere. If you just need a left-right pano, then use Panoramic mode :good:

No worries - that said, I had an update for both the panoramic mode and surround mode through the Galaxy App store in the past few days. Not sure what they fixed or if it works better - no changelog.
Thanks to all for replies.. but the problem that it must shoot at vertical. I can move up. But in virtual mode it will shoot sky..
I think the problem in the calibration if sensors
