Rooted Hero wont boot - Hero CDMA General

a little background: rooted sprint htc hero with fresh1.1 gumbo kernel and setCPU (528/160 ondemand). everything was great until i downloaded the free version of lockbot. while messing with the phone i held the home screen icon for too long i guess and a menu popped up asking me to choose two options; one was home and the other i believe htc sense. i clicked the home option which threw me into some funky looking theme- no fresh 1.1 with sense ui i guess. i tried to reboot but my phone keeps getting stuck at the fresh boot screen with the yellow [WAIT] flashing. if i hit a bunch of buttons it takes me to my actual phone dial pad but a message pops up saying "the application HTC Sense (process com.htc.launcher) has stopped unexpectedly. please try again and asks to force close.
i tried going back to stock with the RUU exe file on my pc- wont let me.
PLEASE help me out!

Boot into recovery and use your last nandroid backup. You did do a nandroid backup right?

not sure why you would be thrown into a boot loop all you did was go from sense to vanilla android but yeah restore your last backup

yes sir i do have one. do i restore it from the phone?

You should be able to boot while holding the home button down and you'll go into recovery mode. Just restore your nandriod backup. Easy as that.

i am such a fn noob. i decided to format my sd card
so i went into setting/sd card and pone storage/unmount after which i pressed format.
now i get a notification saying that my sd card is blank or of unsupported format.
i forgot that my nandroid backup that you guys told me to restore was on it. i have a copy on my pc but now i cnt get the sd to work.......

Are you using Windows? Is it inside a virtual machine?

If you were able to go into settings, you should have just cleared the data pertaining to your mistaken home app... then the next boot it would ask you again.
Now, as to the SD card, you will need to boot to recovery and format it that way. If you had an ext partition that's probably what's causing your problem... Then, you can copy the nand backup back onto the sd card and restore. You will lose app data that was stored on the sd card (as well as pictures and music), but your settings and applications will return.

im no expert, but maybe u can try flashing fresh again, over what u have, maybe somewhow sense got messed up,or isnt compatible with lockbot..who knows...id try restoring to a backup,or flashing fresh again...good luck.

trying to install fresh 1.0

ok i JUST rooted my hero and want to goto the fresh 1.0 rom, so basically what I did was put the rom on root of sd card as update.zip
wiped phone and applied the update and then I reboot. but it never works so I have to wipe and goto nandroid restore.
I was looking at the requirements and it says
Requirements:
A rooted CDMA HTC Hero by Sprint. RA's recovery loaded on. If you have any questions on that then please visit one of the other various threads on here about how to root your phone.
I have a rooted htc hero and im not sure about RA's recovery loaded. I do have the recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img saved to the root of my sd card but I havent done anything with it exactly, i just put it on there. Is their something im forgetting?
thanks
how long did you wait for Fresh to initialize?? it takes awhile the first time.
oh and before you do anything do a nandroid backup!!!!!
well it went through like a boot sequence, were it checked everything and it all said ok,
then it says
initialize fresh - WAIT
I wait awhile it eventually boots and shows the htc logo like it normally does, then i start getting like force close errors on settings toggle, and it gets to a overclock settings screen asking for allow access or deny.
Im just wondering if theirs something if I need to do with the
recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img
file
and dont worry I have had to use nandroid restore MULTIPLE times lol,
also I can get 2.1 to work easily but its jsut a little to slow for me.
ok and instead of wiping my current rom (which is basically stock) the one right after you root. I just applied fresh and it booted up into fresh. and the build rom even says fresh rom 1.0 but now I dont have any service?
and getting alot of FC esp in settings
sounds like you haven't pushed the recovery 1.5 at all.
it's only loaded on your sd card.
that being said, a backup also hasn't been made since recovery is required.
If you already have the recovery file on your sd card, then try this command.
adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img
power off
hold the home key, press power (still holding home) until the recovery screen comes up. run your backups/restores from there. then you can update from .zip and choose your fresh rom
well when I hold home and power on at the bottom it says I have Ra 1.5.2 or whatever at the bottom loaded. I followed this guide
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/how-to-flash-a-new-recovery-image-if-you-are-already-rooted/
and so im hoping I can just now wipe phone and load fresh
OK, figured it out. got it
was using 1.5.2 for recovery and that one didnt work?
idk why thought it did
went to recovery-RA-heroc-v1.2.3.img
and now everything worked great .
LOL, it just cracks me up how anybody can even touch their CDMA phones with GSM software. Easy way to brick your phone bro, be careful next time. I'm surprised that recovery actually loaded on your phone.
ZOMG! Becareful, I have only seen 2 of these bricked and 1 was by GSM ROM.

Boot infinite loop

I tried to install expresso on DC 2.07 and the zip file flashed, then when I rebooted it just keeps looping without getting to the OS. I suppose I screwed something up, so I was going to nandroid back, but now the phone won't let me get back into the recovery console. Anybody have any tips on how to get the recovery console back up?

You pulled the battery and put it back in, then held just the home button and the power key?
if the above doesnt do it
Pull the battery put it back in power on hold down home and back. clear the data.
I am currently running the newest version of DC, hours after the update I look down the phone is continuously restarting never making it past the sprint screen.
I go into recovery it says it cant mount to the SD card. so as of right now my phone is dead in the water.
I purchased a new SD card and im loading DC onto it to do a flash. Ill let you know If I get the same thing, mine didnt do it right away but it was fine before the update this morning... oh and Damage whats up with no Wireless Tether??
Mine is doing the infinite loop also. I had everything working and did a nandroid backup. After I rebooted, it started to loop, the nandroid loops also, I wiped the ext on sd, and still get the loop.

So you guys can get into Nandoird, you wipe data, dalvik and ext partition, reinstalled ROM and you still get a boot loop?
Yes exactly..
I ruled my phone bricked earlier for no reason at all. phone was fine, i did the update to 2.7.2 and hour or two later it keeps looping..
I tried New SD card, erase data, davlik, re partitioned, downloaded a fresh version off the net just incase my copy was corrupt and still looped
I took it to the sprint store before they closed and got a new phone.
I Would seriously look into this obviously I wasnt the only one

Yes TrevE says it may have something to do with /data/private-app/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6174954&postcount=1951
All I know, it boots like normal, I install exchange, hotmail. some market apps. titanium apps, paid and free, then when I went to reboot I backed up in nandroid, then when it actually booted, it was stuck in the HTC quietly brilliant and the start up of the sprint logo and keep looping. TreVe suggested adb logcat but I can not get that far to log the error. He said he logged it as the private-app
Oh I also tried to delete sd ext, davik, remove sdcard, run from the nandroid back up and everyway made the loop. I think TrevE is onto something though. I have one app that I install that is a private app that is from Titanium that may cause this.
Oh and btw, if I wipe the rom and reboot it boots up normally so i think it has something to do with something that is installed. Is anyone else using titanium backup to restore a paid app? Installing a paid app from the sdcard??

Not much left to look into since the phone is gone. I would have restored to the unrooted 1.56 ruu to test, but I guess a new phone is good too.
Try flashing a different ROM as in different frameworks. Sometimes going back to a 1.5 ROM can fix weird issues like that.
I went with fresh's Rom this time instead of dc. Everything has been good so far.
I had a problem with a loop with both DC and Fresh. It all began after I set up my Exchange email. I am using Touchdown and I haven't had any issues.
Keep on mind I never added or used any private apps. This happened after the update through the loader. I changed nothing and have been using the same apps for months.
I kept having these issues after 2.07.2 even after a full wipe and reset still no dice. So I just went to Fresh.

Someone Please Help me!

Ok. I ran into a problem. I fastbooted StreakMod Recovery and got to the update.zip from SD card and went through with it. Then When I booted the phone up I keep getting a pop up that says System Exception. And When I tried to open the keyboard, (Update was Gingerbread Keyboard) it ended the process of it everytime. The pop up keeps comming up and I keep hitting quit. How can I fix this?
dont worry

long press the text box/input method/select a different keyboard, if you dont have a different one then you will need to either use adb to push one or pc to put it onto sd. then between force closes try and install it. last option is obviously a factory reset.
be careful what you install without reading compatibility.
Thank you. What I did was went into root explorer syste/app and deleted the Latin APK and IMI files. Took the keyboard out. But I dont understand, Im trying to get the gingerbread keyboard installed?

[Q] Can you help a brother out?

I will post the long version here, mainly because I have nothing better to do.
Here is the situation. I bought a NC about 6 months ago. I rooted it using Auto Nooter. I have no idea what ROM I installed to be honest. I'm very much a novice at this. And I'm quite stupid to boot, I might add. It has worked relatively ok since then. The ROM seemed a bit buggy and I had some initial troubles with constant reboots, in addition to some basic things not working and way bogging the thing down, but in general it was ok. I haven't used it much since unless I was traveling.
Today....I was traveling. Traveling to BFE. As such, I decided to bust out my trusty NC and download a new book while I was waiting for my flight. I did so, and something went a bit haywire. It seems that somehow, without prompting, the device has restored itself to the stock B&N ROM (1.1 maybe?). Yet - the Android OS is still there. For example I can click on my task manager app in the lower left corner of the homescreen and it shows that all of my apps are running and I can even switch to them. But my homescreen is defaulted to the B&N one showing my eBooks and I can't figure out how to get my Android launcher back. I have tried to reboot and it does the Droid boot up but reverts to the same B&N home screen.
I was thinking about trying to update to a new ROM since it had been awhile and I figured there must be something better/more stable out there now - Honeycomb or whatever. I guess this is the kick in the ass that I needed.
So now here I sit in a hotel room in BFE. There are no restaurants open past 9. There are no bars. There IS a Super Wal Mart but I think I'm gonna pass on that.
I figured I would look into this. Where to start? Should I re-set this thing to stock and then just pick a new ROM and re-root? Can I do any of this without having a SD card slot in my laptop - just using a USB cable? Will I lose any eBooks that I downloaded?
I await your sage advice.
rooting actually means gaining super user access to the current android rom. B&N, i believe is Froyo, so you did not install any rom so to speak. you were probably just rooted.
I think the issue is with the launcher and not that it is back to stock. What happens when you long press on the home screen?
If you plan to do anything, you will definitely need an sd card reader.
If you autonootered, then you were running stock, but rooted. With a custom launcher replacing the stock launcher, it sounds like.
At any rate, you were probably hit with the automatic update to B&N 1.2 (which is Android 2.2, iirc.) You almost certainly aren't rooted anymore, but it may allow you to run any apps that you already had downloaded, just from the stock app launcher.
When you get an SD card reader, you can check out Manual Nootering. It's basically the same as the old Auto Nooter, but for B&N 1.2. If you change the rom entirely (install CM7) or just run a different rom from an SD card, you'll avoid having B&N overwrite your root access in the future.
Thanks for the responses. I believe that you are correct. I actually was running 1.0.0. I used auto-nooter to root the thing and had it working with a custom launcher. I don't think it updated to 1.2. In fact I know that it didn't update to 1.2. I am trying to get it to do that right now.
I would like to install a new ROM or root or do something after it updates to 1.2 so that I have access to the Android market. What is my best way to do this? Should I just root again from 1.2? Should I install this CM7?
Can you help me understand the differences? Thanks again.
I could Super Wal Mart tonight for a SD card reader if I'm feeling frisky.
I've got all kinds of problems.
I went to update to 1.2 from 1.0. I removed my SD card and erased and deregistered device. I booted it back up and it thinks it's a phone. I put the 1.2 file in the root drive via USB, as I have read over and over that the thing should recognize the 1.2 file and reboot itself. It's not working. I erased and deregistered again. same deal.
Any advice?
I'd do a full factory reset, then try the update to 1.2 again.
A couple of things about the 1.2 update -- do not unzip the update file or rename it. Just drop it as-is into the nook. And make sure to eject the nook from your computer and unplug it.
Thank you aka. I got it to take. I am now at 1.2. Now back to square 1(.2). Any help on this?

ETA: lol, congratulations! I guess just skip to that link at the end.
I'd agree with akaCat that you should do a factory reset, BUT you can only do that if you still have the stock recovery utility, and it seems possible that you do not. Try to get the NC to reset by interrupting the boot 8 times. If it doesn't work, you may have installed ClockworkMod Recovery on your Nook Color in place of the stock recovery utility. You may have done so while rooting, or later from the ROM Manager app, perhaps even by accident.
Have you attempted to boot to recovery by holding down "n" while you power on the device, and continuing to hold power + n for about six seconds (1-one-thousand, 2-one-thousand, etc), then releasing both? If so, do you get a factory reset dialog (series of yes/no options) or a longer menu including items like "mounting and storage" and "flash zip from sd card?" If you get the longer menu, then that's ClockworkMod Recovery, and neither the 8-failed-boots-reset nor the automatic update are going to work.
If you do have ClockworkMod Recovery, don't do anything yet. Hopefully somewhere on the screen it tells you the version number, in the format 3.0.x.x. Just let us know that version number and power off the NC.
If you still have the stock recovery utility, then do the factory reset, boot into the stock OS, connect USB, drop the update file straight on the Nook (not in any folders), safely remove the NC from your PC, and let it sit. Hopefully it will reboot itself.
If not, the next step is probably going to involve preparing a bootable ClockworkMod SD and manually installing a CWM-compatible version of the update, or of a different ROM. This article may help you wrap your head around the different options: http://quinxy.com/guides/how-to-pick-your-nook-color-operating-system-and-install-options/
ETA: lol, congratulations! I guess just skip to that link at the end.
Thank you, Tao. I seem to be a bit stuck, though.
I'm at 1.2 stock. I was able to reformat and erase my sd card. I went to load the .gz image onto the card (for CM7, per instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957) and I also loaded the nightly build. Then inserted card into NC and booted. Nothing.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Should I unzip either file?
One thing that might/might not matter....when I went to eject the SD card from my PC, I wasn't given that option so I just pulled it.
One more thing.....the instructions at the link above instruct you to "write the image to your SD card" but then go on to say "eject the SD card" and then further "insert the uSD card into your computer"
Huh?? Isn't it all on the same card? Why do I need two different cards? What am I missing?
This blog breaks down the same process a little more step-by-step, with videos: http://www.anamardoll.com/2011/04/ereader-running-cm7-firmware-on-nook.html
You can skip the long preamble down to "Ready? Let's get started."
You do need to unzip the disk image, and write it to the SD using a program like Win32DiskImager or WinImage. It's also definitely a good idea to safely eject the SD card from your PC.
Hi Tao and others. Thanks again for all of your help. I'm almost there!
I followed this Ana chick's directions and I have CM7 booting up. I am now at the stage where I am trying to boot up in recovery mode so I can get the google apps and wifi thing going. I can't get it to work! I am holding down the "n"/home button and then the power button and it keeps booting up with CM7. I've tried it probably 20 times. Any help? Thanks!
Can someone also tell me how to access the book I just purchased and was in the middle of reading? Do I have to go somewhere and re-download?

I should add that though I can get CM7 to boot, I never get "The Power of Reading". It's just kind of a flash.
That's all normal--verygreen had to make a new uboot, which no longer shows "The Power of Reading" and also flies through a recovery boot so fast you could miss it. If gapps didn't install, just make sure the .zip is still in the boot partition and keep trying. I'm pretty sure holding power > reboot > recovery boot works now from within CM7, but I would go into Settings>Accounts and try to sign in to Google before assuming it didn't install.
If the book was a B&N purchase, once you have the market working, just install the Nook app and sign into your account, and you should be able to re-d/l the book, possibly even still synced to where you left off.
Thank you so much Tao and others. Up and running with CM7. Any additional mods I should be messing with?
btw, you can also boot into recovery through rom manager, its easier.

You can overclock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925451
Just make sure you grab the version for SD, and install it just like gapps, then set clock speed via CyanogenMod Settings>Performance>CPU

Easier than holding power a sec, poking "Reboot," then "Reboot to Recovery?"
Really, it's about the same either way, depending how handy ROM manager is on your system.

Check the taboonay thread, vache stated he fixed the problem. Kitchen has been fixed, just re-cook what you want and flash
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
Yes it's fixed indeed.
Just cook again ;-)
I'm about to give up hope on root. I think I messed something up with my lack of experience. Here's the story.
Rooted and everything went well. Installed clockwork and taboonay 2 with villian and everything was going great. Then I tried the cookbook thing on taboonay. And got a system UI failure constantly. So I decided I had made a mess of my sdcards trying to figure things out. So I was going to reset everything back to factory, to include clockwork, and start over. I used clockwork to restore things back to before I put on taboonay and villian. Then, without thinking I unrooted the tab before changing clockwork back. I moved my backups from clockwork to my computer and formatted my sd cards. Now the tab won't reroot. I tried to move my backup files back to path sdcard/clockwork/backups but clockwork says it can't find them. How do I get clockwork to find my backup files? And if I restore to a point the tab was rooted, will it again be rooted? How do I reset everything back to factory and start over?
think I figured it out. Rooted again anyway. Is there an easy way to reset everything at one time? Including recovery?
As far as I know the answer is "NO".
You may restore kernel and OS with a nand backup/retore and you can flash the recovery in tree ways : adb, zip, Acer Recovery app but not all at the same time.
First thing to do :
install the recovery
then flash kernel and rom from sdcard or you restore a nand backup.
Your clockwork backups should work if you put them back in the /clockworkmod directory of the external SD card. Did you pay attention to the directories structure ?
For Thor recovery, the path you mentioned is wrong to me.
On the external sd it should be :
/clockworkmod /backup/[date of backup]/*
The [date of backup] is like : 2011-08-26.20.00.12
(date and time)
id pay for an app that did it if anyone has any ideas.... OK. I got clockwork off. I'm going to unroot again and reset the whole thing again and start over.
I 've edited my previous post, will this help you ?
yes, very helpful. Got everything put back together, and even got the mods from taboonay cookbook working. You all are awesome. Learned more from xda in two days than two years of college. Ofcourse, that probably says something about my effort in college. Ive got another question though. Think im going tonstart a new thread for it. Ive got adfree on my tab. Every time it blocks an ad it puts the little green android picture in where the ad should be. Wouldnt it be cool if you could personalize that pocture that pops up? Is that possible?
