For people running WM6.1/6.5, who want to RE-enable the GPS on their Mio P550/Airis, the GPSToday Today-Screen Plugin(0.9.9.8, stable) is the way to go (Downloadable from here ---> http://www.geoterrestrial.com/mobile/downloadplugin.php ) .
DO NOT USE THE FULL-SCREEN APP! Why?
Because after installing the Full-screen app, and then resetting and uninstalling it, via ActiveSync, I installed the plugin, above, and not only did it re-enable the 'lost' icons that the FS version took with it, upon install, but it also works BETTER than the GPS crap that was in the OEM WM5!
Another good thing - for me, anyways - is that it's in English... All of it! Woo-Hoo! (My 6.5 is all in French and it's KILLING me!)
*** As a fore-warning: You have to DISABLE the cool-ass finger-flick capability to see the app... Goto: Settings --> Home --> Elements and UNtick the Windows default, and check all of the other ones... Then, when you go BACK to youe desktop, it'll be there. ***
After you copy it to your 550 (I used A/S), open the .cab with the file manager on the device and it'll do it's thing. You have to get a GPSToday account (free) that they ask for a username, PW and email, which they send the auth code to. Once you put int the code (on the same screen as where you signed up) it'll be active.
It will go through the instructionals (which you can bypass, but I recommend you at LEAST scan over) and then it'll go to the mapping part.
Go outside, click 'More' then 'Quick Fix.' It will enable the GPS (If you've gone into the System settings and allowed the GPS antenna to be automatically enabled - Your current location will be demarcated by a blue dot inside of a red circle.
Careful, though, you'll have to zoom out, a bit, the first time you use it, since it starts at the main office of the company... In southern California, USA.
Initial loading is kinda slow, but once you set your initial location, it's pretty smooth, afterward.
Lastly, users new or current should add the group 'xda-developers' to their watch list (More --> GeoGroups --> Browse Public Groups). This will be a place that we can share locations for S&G.

Ok I had gotten board with the lack of wifi and decent web browser on the Treo 650 that I decided to make the move to the 8125. I knew about the speed difference and some of the other issues discussed in these forums because I researched the device for months before making the move. Therefore I wont say much about that. Unfortunately I have a few issues that I can't seem to find answers for in this forum and I was hoping other users out there could help.
1. Is there any way of making the navigation pad useful? I cant access anything on the taskbar and it would be great if I could. I installed magic button so I can close apps and switch back to home when I want. Furthermore there is almost no documentation on how to use the nav pad. All application instructions say tap the icon. It's very convenient to have one handed use. for example i have yet to figure out how to get back to the location bar in Pocket IE so I can enter a url without having to tap the screen.
2. Is it common that some applications just freak out when you switch to landscape mode (scroll bars not working and such)?
3. As mentioned I installed magic button but is there an application that will pop up a list of running tasks so I can switch between them easily with the navigation pad.
4. Backup. I may be very wrong on this but I fear that active sync does not actually backup my entire device like palm does. Could someone clear this up and if I'm correct is there a way for active sync to do this. I have more programs on this device than what is on my add/remove prog screen.
5. Notification reminders. I see a feature to have the led for a period of time but it would be nicer if it could be set to play its sound also. Like the pagers of old.
6. Notification of lost service. This phone never tells me I have no cell service. Last thing I want is battery draining searching or worse assuming I have service and miss all calls.
If anyone could provide some info on the above it would be a great help. i have already found many other programs that make up for the lacking features. Below is a list of what I have installed please make any suggestions you think would be helpful.
1. AnthaVPN - easiest and fastest to install
2. TN520 by mochasoft
3. Pocket Putty SSH client
4. Eyes On Call - Callfilter like program with many features still limited but the developer is very quick in implementing suggestions.
5. Info sharp - same developer as above but this provides sms capabilities that are very impressive. He almost has chat style sms with the way this program works.
6. OMAPclocker - for clocking to 220. I actually see the difference.
7. IM+ - Sametime/AOL instant messenger client.
8. Info apps I have Metro, Ereader, Bdicty, VadeMecum
9. TCPMP
10. Registry Wizard
11. Calc98 - the built in calc app is a joke.
12. Xpressmail - dont care what anyone says this app does what it says it will do. Pushes email to your phone.
Thank You
- Richard
OK, so even though Pandora rocks, I could not get the Pandora midlet running on my PPC6800, nor could I get the protocol to build an app for it.
However, Last.fm does have some reverse engineered protocols posted around the Internets and I build this awesome cool app "LastRadio" to receive it.
The app DOES require .net compact framework 2 (which all WM6 devices have built in) and due to a bug in the HTC implementation of the keyboard driver, you will have to use the pop-up keyboard to type into the text boxes (at least I did, on the Mogul).
AND, if your network connection can't maintain 128Kb, playback will be spotty -- you can try to tweak the registry buffer settings if you like, but it probably won't help
Instructions:
1) Get a last.fm account (free)
2a) On WM5, install .net CF2 from Microsoft
On WM6, skip to step 2!
2) install LastRadio (using lastcab.cab, attached)
3) log in, type an artist that you like to start your channel list, and enjoy
Press the "Add Artist" button, to add the artist to your "channel list"
For further enjoyment, get a cradle and audio hookup for your car.
can't get this to work. grey screen with add artist, next track, and change channel. but pressing these buttons dont do anything
The only thing that does anything is "Change Channel," I enter an artist name, hit play and it goes back to the main screen and nothing happens.
same with me. anybody got this to work?
What device are you using?
I developed this on the Mogul and using the Visual Studio WM6 emulator.
It probably won't work on WM5 devices.
If the network is up and you have WM6 with .net cf2, you should see:
1) The login screen (enter your last.fm username and password)
2) The artist screen (enter an artist to "seed" your music channel)
3) The play screen (music should start playing, after some buffering)
thank you for this great player! i love last.fm, could listen to it for days.
anyway i had these little problems with your app, using htc touch with wm6:
- can't install on external storage card. it gives me the choice, but still installs on internal memory.
- when streaming, it fills up my internal storage. there seems to be a growing temporary file that fills up my remaining 5 mb quite fast (ending in a out of memory message). if it was on external card, this wouldn't be a problem.
- cpu usage is very high. can't do much else when it is running
thanks again, cheers
i am running on a mogul which has wm6
can't get it to work.
Thanks for the feedback -- I will continue to improve the program.
There is no "file" that is created by lastRadio.
Maybe your device has some memory pressure. Try closing other applications.
The default memory buffers are 7 * 32K = 224K, you can change that in the registry (HKCU/Software/LastRadio/BufferCount and BufferSize).
Note that 1 extra buffer is allocated (for overflow). The default BufferCount of 6 allocates 7 buffers.
You should be able to run from the storage card, although there might be a bug in the installer (I'll look at it) -- just copy the executable files (lastradio.exe, fmodcaller.dll, and fmodce.dll) to a directory on your card.
i eventually found the temporary files. they go to /windows/profiles/guest/temporary internet files/content.ie5/xyz/last.xyz
the files get deleted with each new track, or when the app closes.
what happened was that i listened to very long tracks (classical music) and ended up with 50 meg temp files. program then crashed because of low storage, leaving the temp files undeleted.
this seems to be a general problem: program sometimes exits with an error message (when i press the x in the corner ?), leaving the temp files behind.
Thanks -- I think I know how to fix that.
Those files are unnecessary, I need to turn off internet caching for those requests!
This will fix the file caching issue -- thanks again for the help finding that.
It MIGHT fix the network connectivity issues some users experienced.
I tried your latest version and it worked - once. While it was playing I accidentally pressed the power button. Since then, it hasn't worked. Logs on, but nothing happens when you click the add button and the group I had previously added won't play either when you attempt to change groups.
Tried re-installing and deleting the reg key.
Suggestions??
still not working for me.
I also only see those weird boxes.
The log says
textBox1
bad handshake: session failed
Doesn't work here either. I can log in and I see the interface fine (I think). I see a grey screen with three buttons on the right (Add Artist, Next Track, and Change Channel) and a volume slider. But I can't make anything play. The add artist button doesn't do anything. If I press Change Channel, it will then bring me to the screen to enter my favorite artist. I do that, but then nothing ever happens after that.
Thanks for this!
WORKS GREAT
Though, considering its a LastFM application, I'm surprised its under a "Pandora Rocks!" thread...
I have mobile 6, on a mogul 6800, and I too just get a gray screen with a 3 buttons that don't function.
will this work with .netcf version 3.5?...
I have the grey background and the three inactive buttons. i have a mogul running windows mobile 6.1 with the .net framework installed
thank you!!!
WORKS GREAT!!!
on my 8525
thank you!!!!
Does anyone have a list of what all the default services do, and what ones are safe to disable. And at that, is it worth disabling services to free up ram or does it even make a difference?

I am using Dotfred's Task Manager. I'm sure he is on XDA, but his home website is:
http://www.dotfred.net/
I have a list of a couple things but I havn't tried them all I just found them somewhere else. I will put an * infront of ones that seem to be working on my system Mougle WM 6.1. I couldn't try all the keys because the weren't on my system or I need the services they provided. My RAM has increased my about 5MG I was starting at 19MG and getting as low as 2 or 3 through the day. Now I start at over 20 and I get as low as 15 normally.
*STOP ACTIVE SYNC FROM AUTO STARTING
1. DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL MEMMAID
2. GO TO "NOTIFICATIONS" TAB
3. LOOK IN THE LOWER SECTION AND THERE ARE 3 "REPLLOG" FILES (ACTIVESYNC)
4. ONE OF THEM WILL SAY "APPRUNAFTERTIMECHANGE" WHEN HIGHLIGHTED
5. DELETE THAT ONE (THE OPTION AT THE LOWER RIGHT SIDE WILL RESTORE IT ANYTIME YOU WANT)
DONE, ACTIVESYNC WON'T AUTOSTART WITH NETWORK SYNC AND YOUR NETWORK SYNC IS STILL ACTIVE.
I DID THESE FOLLOWING TWEAKS
1. WINDOWS LIVE=SELF EXPLANATORY
2. SQMUPLOAD=CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
3. OBEX(MOST OF YOU WHO HAVE BLUETOOTH DONGLES PROBABLY WON'T WANT TO DISABLE THIS)
4. DPT / DTPT (GOOGLE SEARCHING INDICATES THAT THIS IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SOME SORT OF DHCP ACTIVITY (KILLS INTERNET SHARING)
5. BTHIDSVC(MY BLUETOOTH HEADSET WORKS FINE WITH THIS MISSING, I'M NOT SURE IF ANY OTHER BLUETOOTH OPERATIONS ARE AFFECTED, AS I DON'T HAVE A BLUETOOTH DONGLE FOR MY COMPUER)
*6. SMSRETRY = THIS IS RESPONSIBLE FOR AUTOMATICALLY TRYING TO SEND MESSAGES IF YOU'RE OUT OF SERVICE OR ROAMING.
FROM HKLM\INIT I'VE DISABLED...
*1. PLAYSILENCE.EXE
2. UPTIMESQM.EXE(CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE)
*3. TIMEWIZARD.EXE / TIME SYNC (GOOGLING HAS SHOWN THIS TO KEEP THE TIME RIGHT AFTER A COLD BOOT[TAKING THE BATTERY OUT], HOWEVER, MY TIME SYNCS WITH SPRINT'S SERVERS)
Let me know if you come up with anything else.
I am unable to switch off the setting to stop downloading data automatically although I have unticked the box.
I continues to update the weather every hour complete with graphics.
I would like to switch it off and only download when I need it
Any suggestions?
Hi,
I have a french version, but I try to translate, the naming will probaly not exact:
1) go to parameter (settings) page.
2) tap on "DATA service" (service de données in French)
3) Here, you will find what you want, "weather" and then untick "auto download"
I hope it helps
Thanks I have done that but it hasn't stopped the automatic data download
Are you sure that is the Weather the cause of update ?
Ther are a lot of other aplications e-mail, Stocks, GPS update, application update,....
By me all this things seems to work well. Elsewhere, there is an application that stops all the phone communication : nodata. I do not use it but I read this work very well on mini.
NoData
Hi,
See if the program "NoData" doesn't help you. It allows you to black access to the internet via your phone system. Sure worked for me.
Luck
The Weather tab is a big resource hog. I also suspect some bugs in it that can cause your phone to freeze. (Not verified yet. But one of my prime suspects.)
I would suggest to disable the whole weather thing altogether.
Which resourses does the weather program hog? I magine that it's a load on the battery, and the graphic use up a lot of memory. Are there any others? I would never use my mobile provider to update anything in my phone. I do it when I sync or find a hotspot.
How would you disable it?
I am only curious, so when you have a moment, I'd be interested in your response.
Thanks
Primary the ram memory. I notice it ate up several megabytes of ram. I forgot to jot down exactly how many. It certainly is not as small as 1Mb or 2Mb. Somewhere closer to 10Mb. It's huge.
Disable it from "Personalize Home Screen Tabs".
Basically, take it off the tabs. And don't update it. After a few days, it will just die off.
Thanks. Memory is not an issue for me now, but I"ll keep it in mind.
So im finally there, i have to switch to Android. I was using a windows mobile device before, so i probably expect a lot of functionality wich Android might not offer. But there are a lot of questions left i hope some of you can answer me:
General usage:
- is it possible to remove that "slide to unlock" thingy, i dont see its use, the phone has one button to toggle it that wont get pushed in my pocket
- battery symbol, i see a lot of people having an additional battery symbol with the exact percentage of the remaining power, i think thats bull****, i dont need 2 battery symbols, just one thats working the right way, is it hard to change the battery symbol in the noticication bar?
- can i bind the hardware keys, for example long press of a button starts the recording for voice control, short press opens a taskmanager
- is the copy and paste working 100% and is avaiable in all programs?
- can i have the device in USB mass storage as standard setting (not asking everytime i connect it)?
- can i have a shortcut that would check all my registred mail accounts when i click it (no automatic checking, i decide when the device connects to the internet)?
- can i create shortcuts to html, doc or excel files?
- can i use java programs in android?
- is there a program that would display a symbol for calls, sms and emails that would change their apperance when i have a missed call, new message or mail?
- is it possible to active bluethooth or wlan by shortcut or voice command?
- are there USB host drivers so i could connect USB mass storage devices?
Applications needed:
- i would like a simple task and program manager, to switch between them and close them if i want to, i thing it would be best suited in the drop down bar (since its there..why not use it)?
- SMS, call time and data counter for incoming and outgoing, is there something like that? I suppose i could put it as widget on one of the homescreens
- backup software for settings, SMS messages, emails and installed programs and their settings, is there something like that, are there backup programs that work after updating to a newer Android version?
- my device will have a Snapdragon CPU, what about a CPU speed manger that underclocks when in standby and has profiles for programs so i could run it at half speed in general but for some specific programs get the full CPU power?
- TMC data for navigation: i think there is no such thing yet, right?
- a decent file explorer with all features expected from a good explorer (it should be able to create shortcuts for html, word or any other file that the phones software can handle)
- a program that insertes local holidays into my calender, with support for birthdays wich are not in my contacts
- a good serious photoeditor: with serious i mean i dont need any effects bull**** wich comes with most camera applications, i need the ability to open large files, crop them, maybe even display tifs with layers, something like a pocket version of Photoshop
- videoplayer is there something like VLC is for windows PCs and CorePlayer is for windowsmobile? A player thats is capable of playing everything
applications i allready found and will probably use:
- as office solution i suppose i can use the programs from Softmaker, dont know if there are android drivers for my BT Freedom Keyboard
- multimessenger with MSN, ICQ, Jabber, Facebook: maybe palringo, at least it was good on windows mobile
- navigation: i think there is TomTom and Igo
- calendar that can display a whole month with visible icons for appointments: should work with pocket informant, because it does on windows
Dumb questions?
General usage:
- is it possible to remove that "slide to unlock" thingy, i dont see its use, the phone has one button to toggle it that wont get pushed in my pocket
I believe this is only possible if you have root
- battery symbol, i see a lot of people having an additional battery symbol with the exact percentage of the remaining power, i think thats bull****, i dont need 2 battery symbols, just one thats working the right way, is it hard to change the battery symbol in the noticication bar?
again, I believe you need root
- can i bind the hardware keys, for example long press of a button starts the recording for voice control, short press opens a taskmanager
pretty sure you can do things like this with root
- is the copy and paste working 100% and is avaiable in all programs?
it's always seemed fine to me.. just try it out for yourself.
- can i have the device in USB mass storage as standard setting (not asking everytime i connect it)?
I don't know of any way to do this.
- can i have a shortcut that would check all my registred mail accounts when i click it (no automatic checking, i decide when the device connects to the internet)?
go to settings-> accounts & sync. then click on the account and disable "sync gmail". Then, when you open up gmail, you can manually refresh.
- can i create shortcuts to html, doc or excel files?
I don't think so.
- can i use java programs in android?
I believe htc sense phones can but it is not included in AOSP
- is there a program that would display a symbol for calls, sms and emails that would change their apperance when i have a missed call, new message or mail?
there's lots on the market. Personally, I use launcher pro (homescreen replacement) that includes this by default. I highly recommend it.
- is it possible to active bluethooth or wlan by shortcut or voice command?
have you tried the power control widget?
- are there USB host drivers so i could connect USB mass storage devices?
It's certainly possible but it might require a custom kernel or something. I'm not sure. It depends on your hardware as well though. Many/most android phones cannot output power through their usb port, which makes this impossible. USB drives need power.
Applications needed:
- i would like a simple task and program manager, to switch between them and close them if i want to, i thing it would be best suited in the drop down bar (since its there..why not use it)?
task managers really shouldn't be necessary. android can handle it just fine itself. I do have one just in case. I like "Advanced Task Manager". As for switching between apps, just long press the home button. if it's not there, just open it from the app drawer again.
- SMS, call time and data counter for incoming and outgoing, is there something like that? I suppose i could put it as widget on one of the homescreens
phonalyzer does what you're asking for, I think.
- backup software for settings, SMS messages, emails and installed programs and their settings, is there something like that, are there backup programs that work after updating to a newer Android version?
I really like mybackup pro. However, it's impossible to backup app settings without root access. You can backup apps but not their data (progress in games for example).
- my device will have a Snapdragon CPU, what about a CPU speed manger that underclocks when in standby and has profiles for programs so i could run it at half speed in general but for some specific programs get the full CPU power?
setcpu is great. requires root.
- TMC data for navigation: i think there is no such thing yet, right?
no idea. google navigation has traffic updates of some sort.
- a decent file explorer with all features expected from a good explorer (it should be able to create shortcuts for html, word or any other file that the phones software can handle)
I use astro file manager. I don't think it can create shortcuts though. I have no idea why you would ever want this..
- a program that insertes local holidays into my calender, with support for birthdays wich are not in my contacts
google calendar can do this by default. I have no idea what you're talking about with birthdays though. Just add them to your calendar...
- a good serious photoeditor: with serious i mean i dont need any effects bull**** wich comes with most camera applications, i need the ability to open large files, crop them, maybe even display tifs with layers, something like a pocket version of Photoshop
never had an urge to do this. "Adobe Photoshop Express" might be a good place to start though.
- videoplayer is there something like VLC is for windows PCs and CorePlayer is for windowsmobile? A player thats is capable of playing everything
I don't really watch videos on my phone so I don't know.
applications i allready found and will probably use:
- as office solution i suppose i can use the programs from Softmaker, dont know if there are android drivers for my BT Freedom Keyboard
never even heard of softmaker. documents to go is supposed to be good
- multimessenger with MSN, ICQ, Jabber, Facebook: maybe palringo, at least it was good on windows mobile
I like meebo, personally.
- navigation: i think there is TomTom and Igo
I don't know why you would pay for these when you can just use google navigation for free..
- calendar that can display a whole month with visible icons for appointments: should work with pocket informant, because it does on windows
what's wrong with google calendar?

Didnt know there is a taskswitcher included, alawys thought id had to go the long way via homescreen.
I will check phonalyzer out thanks.
Will also check out mybackup, even though apps come from the market and a re probably newer version than in the backup, saving settings would seem more logical.
SetCPU, thanks again.

Because there are some excel and word files i often use and of course in want them fast. So shortcuts on Homescreen or where the other applications are. Speaking of that list. Is there some way to organzize it? Change the order, put some in subfolder? The way they are now it sucks.
For the birthdays i need to remember some birthdays of people that dont have phone, mail or anything. So creating a contact would be pointless. But i want to see their birthday everyyear with the info how old they get.
Will look at Adobe Photoshop Express.

It just doenst show me what i want to see.
As far as i understand google voice command (even if it would understand anything else than english allready) decodes the spoken commands online. So when i tell it to open my excel file i would first have to wait till my phone connects to the internet. Is there any voice command software that works on the device and not in the cloud. Like voice command for windows mobile did?
i recommend the app Trapster.
I switched from WM to android not that long ago, so I kanda know where you're coming from. You do have to unmount your storage from your phone every time you want to transfer things, I usually just send things over the air and avoid plugging in. WM loved to be attached to your computer, but android would rather be connected to the internet. I think if you're running sense you can transfer stuff with HTCsync without unmounting every time, not 100% though as I flashed sense onto my N1 a couple times but never downloaded HTCsync.
I think you'll want a rom with sense on it. Sense has the 'sync all' button that you can put on your home screen to sync all of your accounts on demand. They also have a partnership with TomTom for offline navigation. There's also a nice calendar widget, and unread counts for your messages, etc. If you were using touch flo on WM, HTC have kept a lot of the nice features in sense on android.
Android isn't as friendly for key mapping as WM was. You can get onscreen toggles for most things, though. there was one rom I had on my N1 for a while, I think it was CM6, where there were toggles on the drop down menu. This made it possible to switch settings in-app, which I missed from WM. For app-switching, just long-press home to bring up your MRU list. One of the other things I miss from WM is having the battery bar that runs all the way across the top of the screen, just on the top few pixels. Only 1 rom I tried, the MIUI rom, was able to do this. It was a lot easier to mess with in WM.
Programs:
file manager - Astro
IM - IM+, nimbuzz, fring, etc. there are lots of them. im+ does skype
backup - I used SMS backup&restore for SMS, Titanium takes care of everything else.
Calendar - google calendar lets you set a repeating event for birthdays, automatically adds the holidays you tell it to.
Also, USB host is possible, but you need to use a powered USB hub to power the device you're plugging in. Doesn't seem to be another way to get power to the port. If USB host is really important, a hacked kernel and a powered port should get the job done.
I hope this helps, and don't worry. Once you've used android for a while, you'll see that it's really user-friendly. I'm sure you'll grow to love it.
Try Jorte calendar if your don't like the Goggle one.
If you get a phone that's rootable, try Root Explorer for file explorer.

Jorte isnt bad for displaying texts each day in monthview, but symbols would be better.
Never cared much for Sense, to much graphics to little information.
IM+ sounds good, all in one +Skype would be great.
What me really bothers is that USB thingy, cant it unmount in backgroud without bothering me, even winmobile was able to do that.
Another question: Would trying out a lot of apps polute my OS like it happens with windows (leftover files and registry settings after uninstalling). Or ist Anrdois perfect in this matter.
If not i guess i would have to test a lot of apps till i find the ones i like, then hard rest and make a clean install, or wont this be nessesary in Android?
From what I can tell, if you uninstall an app, everything is cleaned up with the exception of maybe a folder on your sdcsrd. And this generally only happens if the app has an optional setting that allows you to specify that the sdcard be used for backups or downloads, etc.

Pretty much true.
the sd card thing is really frustrating. sometimes apps add stuff to seemingly random folders on your sd card so you don't know if you can delete it or not. Apps should be forced to only create folders with the same name as the app. Also, I think you should be able to implement an "onUninstall" method or something in your app, with which you could delete all of the files that you created.
Not everyone has data...
