Excessive Downloads - Nexus One General

Hi All,
I have an issue with my N1 which for two days in a row downloaded in excess of 300MB each day. Fortunatly I discovered the issue by accident when I installed NetCounter. This occured on the orignal locked ROM with the OTA update installed. I have since installed Cyanogen stable and I can see the download counter increasing by about 10MB per hour. Can anyone give me any pointers on how to pinpoint the cause as I am currently in flight mode as I will very shortly be over my monthly cap within the first week! Does anyone know of an app that gives a breakdown of which processes are using what percentage of downloaded data??
Cheers
Ben

bummer Put the phone in airplane mode when not in use until someone can fiqure it out

I already have it in flight mode but obviously I cannot just walk around with it like that forever...

autostarts will help stop this you can get it in the market

Well I have a few ideas as to what may be causing it, but i'm not sure how to turn it off.
My understanding is that when using gmail, android's e-mail system works a lot like RIM's blackberries.
The phone checks with the server every few seconds to see if there are any new messages, and automatically downloads it when there is one.
There are several features in android that work similarly, so you wind up with three or four items on the phone checking the server every second.
so even if each time it checks with the server is 3 KB, if it checks the server every second of every day and you multiply it out you wind up with around 250mb of usage per day.
That's why T-mobile removed the 1GB limit from the G1 data plan
I'm sure there is a way to adjust the settings so that it does not sync as often, but e-mail won't perform as well if you do.

While you're waiting for a better solution you can easily disable/enable data by downloading APNDroid or Toggle Data from the market.
You can put a widget on your homescreen to turn on/off data with a single tap.
Wifi will still be enabled, so if you're on a wifi network, you won't lose access to that, but it will prevent your phone from using the cell network data when you don't want it to.

It can't possibly work like that. I've got two exchange accounts plus gmail all being sync'd 24 hours a day, and my daily usage would be lucky to exceed 10MB. I've done nothing special - just provided the credentials required.
Push email (as used by Blackberry and by the N1's exchange integration) specifically doesn't poll. It registers itself with the server and waits for the server to notify of new mail.

Thanks for the advice guys!
I have just installed toggle data which will give me more control over when the phone connects to the net. This is a good temporary solution but not a complete fix. I am quite surprised about this occurring give my magic used on average 300-400 per month with everything turned on and using the browser every day. Does anyone know of an app that will record detailed internet connection info? Something that I can at least pin point the sites\Ip's that gets the most traffic from the phone so I can work backwards from there?

Lol at the idea regarding gmail and imac =P
gmail uses very little, it only downloads when new mail comes in and even then mail traffic is tiny you might use like 5mb a day if your getting heaps of emails aye

I'll bet cash money that this has to do with an app you installed, plain and simple.

@uansari1: If I was giving advice I would have said the exact same thing. All apps are installed from the market and none are anything that really jump out as likely contenders other then possibly eBuddy. Even this app I removed my hotmail account from the app and have not used over one of the days that I saw the spike in data useage.
The net result from this is I have set alerts on netcounter for 30MB per day, I would strongly suggest others do the same with cap plans otherwise it could get expensive...!

@trinode!
Thankyou so much for that tip you posted! That is the exact breakdown that I was looking for. Unfortunatly I have flashed to cyanogen's latest and greatest an hour ago so the history no longer covers the time period where I was seeing the excessive downloads. I will be certain to use this if\when I see the download meter going nuts for no reason for more then a short period of time. It would be handy if this info was easier to access for the masses, like an app or shortcut but now I know I will be sure to use it!
Many Thanks!
Ben

Install AnyCut from Market and create a shortcut to "Battery History".
Then check your Network Usage. This shows ALL network usage by all applications, and you can set view to A) Since last unplugged B) Since boot C) All time.
Post your results when you get it and then we can clearly see what's going on.

You can add me to that list. I'm using a Bell Vogue (unlimited data) with NFSFANs ROM (1.24 I think - the last non-Footprints one). All other data services work fine.

tested out using m3jorge/vetito hybrid 6.1 20931 and 6.5 roms and no go on either.
This is my first time using google maps on my device or even at all. Seems to be working really well on my device. I don't have GPS built in my device or even have bluetooth GPS receiver yet; however, was able to use it using both GPRS connection and WIFI. Maps loaded quickly and refreshed just as quickly - 1 second 1.5 seconds average with WIFI. Did not test much with GPRS Connection because I wanted to avoid the charges. It did however, to my surprise, find my location really quick once it connected using GPRS (would not with WIFI) It was not 100% accurate, but was very close. So far I like it and will find it to be a very useful app. Have not located any friends yet as none of them have this on their devices yet.
One problem I have noticed with making the Google Maps into an OEM (only since StreetView came out) is that if you change the Regional Settings, the device hangs when running Google Maps. For example, if you change to France and you go to Get Directions ('Itineraire'), the dialog box may be blank and the program is not responsive to input. If you install the CAB instead (eg. with SD AutoRun) then this is not a problem.
Does your OEM have this issue?

for thos of you using the touch (vogue) im not sure if i had the same error but im running a custom cooked rom with m2d and when i installed the latest google maps i had problems running it from m2d but i was able to open it from the start menue just fine...
to fix the problem i used resco file explorer to copy googlemaps.exe from progra files/google coppied to the windows directory and replace that eze
hope that helps
This latitude thing is sweet
1 q tho: I want to keep it running all the time, without having the total google maps app open.
When I close maps, it asks me if I want to keep sharing my position, I answer yes and it keeps just the location service running (taking up a mere 330KB of ram). I don't want to start and exit g. maps evvery time I reboot my device tho (which is a couple of times a week, the joy of a Hermes...). Is there any way to make gmaps do the latitude sharing thing without starting the app, enabling latitude and exiting again?
I had similar issues and on a google forum I think NSFAN mentioned to uncheck gps then try. That worked for me. Seems very cool, but Google needs to learn a thing or two about power management.
This would be useful in some situations, but
I dont think this is something I would want to broadcast all of the time. I know you can turn it off, but once you start showing your position, not showing it makes you look shady. Does anyone else here get questioned if you don't answer your phone 24/7? People know I am never without it, so they expect me to answer. Now will I have to explain why I'm not showing up on some friend's map?
I'm just saying that this strikes me as a little "big brotherish", and I'm going to be very selective about that buddy list.
Anyone know how much data the Latitude service uses? How often does it make a connection and transmit data. Having a constant data connection may cause battery drain issues on some devices that already have power problems.

The expectation of response is probably the most central issue surrounding smartphones/PDAs (for email), and cell phones (for calls). Yes, you will be giving up your privacy, but it's an application you're "testing" and may crash at any time
Personally, I plan on leaving GPS off. That way, I'm in a general vicinity but not one place specifically. It's much harder to snipe me that way.

Google spikes 21 malicious apps with big download counts from the Market
Google just removed some 21 apps from the Market in the last day from a publisher going by Myournet for doing all sorts of naughty things to your device. Offenses include attempting to root your phone, uploading phone information (including IMEI) to who-knows-where, and -- most egregiously -- adding a backdoor that allows additional code to be pulled down and executed.

Any of the well known Antivirus app for android should have picked it up.
I used to think we'll never need an AntiVirus app for Android... well think again.
after reading the article i downloaded all of them to run a full scan and the results are good
I scanned my phone and it's all clean

you can simply un-install it, it doesn't really do anything to your phone until you run the app
and even if you did, uninstalling it will remove the problem
Flashing the phone is a bit over the top it's enough to do a system wipe if you want to be 100% sure, and then restore all your apps from backup, excluding the fake ones

This is actually an incomplete answer.
As noted on Android Police, (I'm new so I can't link there) these apps open a backdoor, which can download additional apps that can do *anything*. The original app doesn't do much on its own. But, removing the infected app will leave behind the additional malware introduced through the backdoor.
Is there anyone who knows if these apps actually worked? What I mean is if the games for example were actually games? The reason I ask is that there is a bubble shoot like game installed on a friends phone which works (not sure if it's the one mentioned above).
So would you be able to recognize that malicious app in that way?
Edit: just noticed on the Lookout Blog that they actively send out a patch to detect these apps (if I read it correctly):
http://blog.mylookout.com/2011/03/s...-found-in-official-android-market-droiddream/
So if you have not yet scanned for those apps, do it now ;-)
Thanks for the information!
How to remove and consequences
First i manyally uninstalled the "Advanced Barcode Scanner" of KingMall2010.
Second i scanned my device with Kasparsky and Lookout, both didn't find any threads.
In the end i performed a reset to factory settings and a format of my SD-card.
Can anyone please tell me if this actions are sufficient to completely whipe this malware of my device?
Also i would like to know if this malware actively sent my private data to servers, or that it just opened a backdoor for later use. And if my data is already sent, what are the consequences and which actions should i take to do something about it.

What you've done so far seems sufficient enough to clear the malware from your phone system. Even if it copied a backup on your SD card (internal & external) if you've wiped both then it should be ok.
In regards to already leaked data, I would immediately change my passwords to gmail, emails, facebook, ebay etc or any other site that you may have used on your phone.

Thanks for your quick reaction. It makes me a little more comfortable. Indeed i already changed my password's.
I already called my phone provider, but apparently could not tell me whether the IMSI (international mobile subscription identity) and SIM card serial number are sufficient information to clone my SIM card. This is the information that would be sent by the malware to remote servers.
Therefor after work i go to get a new SIM card. It's better to be safe than sory after all.
I'm still not convinced on running a constant anti-malware app on my phone. Even with a good processor, my cpu cycles are a precious resource to keep my phone running light and fast.
How heavy on system performance is lookout? Does it only activate and scan when new material is installed?

[APP] DataSync - WiFi/Cloud application syncing

Hello all,
When I first booted my tablet I really couldn't wait to see how my games looked on it, but it wasn't long before I discovered that applicationdata wasn't shared between devices logged in with the same google account. That's where DataSync comes in. DataSync lets you share applicationdata and files/folders on your phone with other Android devices like your tablet, so that both devices have the same settings and games on both have the same levels unlocked. Syncing to and from Dropbox or Box is supported as well in case there's no WiFi network available. DataSync+ also supports automatically syncing/backing up applications either on the SDcard or cloud, Bluetooth synchronization and local backups of apps and their data, scheduled and real-time as you open and close your apps.
DataSync features:
- Parallel file/appsync
- Holo-themed and tablet-optimized UI
- Automatic multicast device-discovery
- Optional Dropbox and Box sync
- Quick Sync shortcut to sync data in two clicks
DataSync Beta features:
- Completely rebuild from scratch, it's faster, more efficient and more intuitive
- Brand new UI, holo themed for all devices
- Background syncing support, with Jelly Bean notifications on 4.1+ devices
- Safe app syncing (choose to up/download per app, free feature)
- FTP support
DataSync+ adds:
- Schedule automated syncs of your apps
- Real-time syncing as you open/close your apps (Beta)
- True two-way syncing
- Syncing via Bluetooth
- Syncing via NFC (Beta)
- Create and restore local backups

Hey all,
I just wanted to let you all know that I've updated my application so that you can now also send and receive files or folders stored on your SD-card. You don't need SU rights for that, so pretty much anyone will be able to use it .

hi there, just discovered your app and it seems to be just what I've been looking for
But i have some questions:
1. is there a way for automaticly run the queque, for example with tasker (with an action-intend or something similar)?
2. how can a quoque be saved as default without using a shortcut?
3. are there any problems if i sync game data from my phone to my tablet? in the market a comment mentionet a fc problem after syncing to xoom (which is also my tablet).
Hi,
I already replied per e-mail, but i figured a reply here would be useful to others as well.
1. At the moment there's no way to schedule a queue for up/download. I am however working on both scheduling via DataSync and other apps (like tasker).
2. Yes, just save a queue without ticking the "create shortcut" box .
3. There's an issue with the app's libraries dissapearing. It's similar to what sometimes happens with TitaniumBackup. I'm working on a fix that backup's the app's libraries and copies them back to where they belong after the sync, so that should resolve the FC issues.
A logcat is very useful, so just e-mail me one if you have an app crashing after syncing .
Quint
Great software!
I have two questions:
1. How can I restore a backup tar file (I have sent you an email about this already, sorry)?
2. How can I load a saved queue after I have closed DataSync?
Thanks in advance!
Dude I love datasync exactly what I need fast and easy just Make sure your port 4444 is open
You shouldn't need to open the port, since it's all done locally over your own network, if for some reason DataSync can't connect, change the ports in the settings .
You can restore a backup by long-pressing an app's entry, if nothing pops up there's no backup to be restored. You can load a saved queue by tapping the queue's entry at the top of the applist . (Already replied by e-mail, but as usual I'll post the answers here as well)
Can you please make it work with Temple Run and Death Rally?
Thanks!
What about files that already exist? Are they completely copied again?
Because I would like to keep the Camera folders on both my phone and tablet in sync, kinda like Apple's iPhoto
Hi there,
At the moment it will simply overwrite existing files. I originally wrote the file sharing feature for appdata sharing only, there overwriting the files makes sense. I'm planning to release another update soon so you'll be able to choose whether to overwrite or not .
As for Temple Run (and probably Death Rally as well), it stores it's data on the SD-card at /android/data/TEMPLE_RUN_PACKAGE. For now you'll have to manually sync that data. I'm working on including data stored on the SD-card as well .
Thanks....currently yours is the only one that can sync between tablet and phone on wifi without going through an intermediary like Dropbox, so being able to keep media in sync without having to do the entire cycle again is a boon.
I'm guessing it's a per folder setting? And will we be able to sync different folder structure according to device, instead of the current method of forcing the same folder structure? Because on my S2 it's sdcard/external_sd, while on Tab 7.7 it's sdcard/ExtStorages/sdcard - irritating.
For now it's a global setting, I'm pretty busy working on other features (including scheduling), so it's pretty low priority at the moment. I added the per-folder thing to my to-do list though! The next update will also work with multiple storage locations, providing they're mounted at /mnt on your device
Great, thanks for the replies. Will wait patiently for the updates.
Just bought Datasync+ to support ya, but did not see the overwrite or not option in changelog. I assumed it's not in this update yet?
Edit : nvm, saw it in settings! Much thanks! Good job!

Looking forward to more stuff - no pressure.
And an easily accessible overwrite or not toggle would be nice, without having to dig in settings every time I switch between syncing media and syncing saved data.
Yeah, it was a pretty quick fix, just so you can stop overwriting in the first place. I'm going to make that more user-friendly soon. I'm now working on having a dedicated SMS/MMS/WifiAP/etc backup entry .
Aside from the little Dropbox issue last night the release of DataSync+ went pretty smooth. There seems to be a nice demand so far ^.^
Is there any way to see what's on the queue without actually doing a sync?
EDIT: Ah, swipe up will show it! I guess I didn't pick up on the visual cue of the triangle at the bottom. But one thing I notice is if I start the sync then swipe down to hide the queue then swipe up again to show the queue, there's nothing there. Have I cleared the queue or is it just a display thing?
It automatically clears the queue after synchronization so you don't have to remove the synced apps from the queue after syncing. You can turn it off in the settings menu

Let's take this offline: Google Maps for Android gets a revamp

By David Meyer
In a boon to those about to head off for their summer holidays, Google is to make it possible for people to use its mobile Maps app without a cellular data connection.
Google Maps already had this feature, at least on Android, as a Labs add-on. However, that required a tricky procedure whereby the user had to select a centre point around which a limited area would be pre-cached. On Wednesday the company said it was making the offline capability official and easier to use.

"Offline Google Maps for Android are coming in the next few weeks," Google Maps engineering chief Brian McClendon wrote in a a blog post. "Users will be able to take maps offline from more than 100 countries. This means that the next time you are on the subway, or don't have a data connection, you can still use our maps."
The announcement also contained several other updates for the mapping app. For those who want to use Google Maps while hiking, Google is to send 'Street View Trekkers' to photograph wilderness areas that can only be accessed by foot.
The company is also extending its Map Maker feedback-and-corrections service to South Africa and Egypt, with Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Norway and Switzerland all set to get access in the next few weeks.
The moves come as a rival system, OpenStreetMap, continues to gain traction, partly through its use by Apple. OpenStreetMap is, as the name suggests, open source, and it has always been built on user contributions and edits.
On Wednesday Google also announced an update to its Google Earth virtual globe. While it has been possible for the last six years to create 3D models of specific buildings, the company will soon add entire metropolitan areas in three dimensions, as demonstrated in a video.
"This is possible thanks to a combination of our new imagery rendering techniques and computer vision that let us automatically create 3D cityscapes, complete with buildings, terrain and even landscaping, from 45-degree aerial imagery," McClendon wrote. "By the end of the year we aim to have 3D coverage for metropolitan areas with a combined population of 300 million people."
Thats great news! So does this mean that I can be home, connected to WIFI and download the maps for my area, and then just go out with no data/wifi and I will be able to use the navigation feature as a GPS?
My question is where is this offline map going to be stored; Sdcard, cache,...(That's right!! I used a semi-colon)
I don't use maps on my phone at all. Have actually uninstalled the apk, because it was always running in the background eating battery. I do keep it on my tablet but that is bc it is wifi and when asleep it doesn't use data which doesn't use battery.
( ... heard there was a Zen party going on in here ... )
I've used the offline maps Labs addon in the past, but it was only limited to 10 download points. Forgot how large the download radius was, but it was only ok (not wood inducing). I'm curious to see whether this will truly allow you to download offline data all the way down to street level view (as purported in an article I read).
I use Locus Pro on my Tab, and I've used it to download tiles from Google Maps as a source. It's limited to downloading 10,000 tiles per day (from Google), which sounds like a lot but really isn't esp. if you're saving multiple zoom levels per target area. Adds up real quick. Not sure the number of tiles I've downloaded thus far, but it's about 250 MB worth of sd card space. Lol.
I'm curious to see what Google brings us. Any offline map is always handy anyhoo.

I remember trying an app that did something like this, and the maps took up ENORMOUS amounts of memory. i guess this wouldnt be an issue for someone who is nice to their sdcard, but for someone like me who is always tinkering on 90%+ full...im good with the way it is now. but hey, its a good option....options are always a plus.
What I can't wait for is the new Maps that Apple is planning on showing, i think its next week?
Apparently, 3D etc. etc. Nothing that Google doesn't have.
I love how google just plans their maps event before Apples and Apple was the first one to plan it in the beginning (this sentence makes no sense i just re-read it -.-)

Automatic file sync between phone and HU? (via lan/WiFi hotspot, not cloud/mobile)

Let me explain my use case and see if anyone is doing something similar.
I use the music app DSub that will sync newly added or starred (favorited) music from my home Subsonic music server to my phone (Nexus 6P). I have the same app installed in my HU (HotAudio, Android 6.0, 2GB, PX5). (The same use case would be true for the official Subsonic app, I just prefer DSub).
On the HU I'd like to turn off the automatic downloading of starred/new music so as to avoid using my mobile data (via my phone's hotspot). Instead I would like to figure out a way in which I can automate (not excluding some clever Tasker steps) the syncing of the files I already download on my phone to the same DSub folder path on my HU. This way I'm not having to download the same songs twice. Presumably this is just a matter of syncing the same DSub folder containing the music data (and maybe other data like album art if possible)
This is desired because my phone can be limited to do these downloads while on WiFi (at home or work, etc) where as the HU is generally too weak in is WiFi abilities to even connect to my home WiFi so its 99% of the time going to be using my phone's WiFi hotspot. If I could just park it at home or somewhere else with decent WiFi and let it sync that would work but since the app can't distinguish between a tethered WiFi connection and a legitimate WiFi connection it would still try to download songs when on my hotspot and couldn't be restricted only to non-tethered WiFi (afaiu). I of course want to use my HU with a hotspot regularly for other apps like Waze.
So in an ideal world I'm wondering if the following feature set can be achieved with any known apps (alone or with some Tasker wizardry):
Sync files between Android devices (phone -> HU)
Copy specific files from Device-Sender to a specific existing destination (either full overwriting or skipping dupes) on Device-Receiver
Directly sync over LAN/Hotspot/Tethered WiFi (e.g. no cloud relay required, I think this is sometimes referred to as WiFi Direct?)
Automate this (possibly via a Tasker profile) so that each time my phone connects a folder on my phone is synced to a specific path on my HU
If I can't figure this out via WiFi I'll probably try handling this over a USB connection to the HU which should be able to trigger a Tasker profile. Obviously avoiding the hands-on step of plugging the phone into a USB cable is why I'm looking for the WiFi based solution.
All suggestions appreciated :good:
You could try running an FTP server on the phone or HU, and use an app like FolderSync to automate syncing over wifi between them. Not sure if this will do the trick for you.
Thanks for the suggestion @joshnat, I was starting to head down that route (automating a FTP Server/Client approach) before I found what seems to be the exact solution I was after. There are definitely a ton of apps that can manage local WiFi syncing but hardly any of them are suited for my purpose.
In case anyone else finds themselves trying to do this I'll add my notes here. Most file syncing apps are geared towards manual and occasional device-to-device transfers. While some of these could be automated it would probably prove cumbersome and unideal for my use case.
Option 1 - WiFi File Sender

Pros:
Simple UI should be conducive to automation and otherwise lightweight app
Auto-discovery of devices running the same app on the local network (works when HU is connected over Phone, both devices find each other)
Good speeds between Phone and HU over Hotspot WiFi, all traffic sent locally.
Receiving device can define the path to receive the files/folder (essential if you want to fill a specific app data folder)
Multiple distinct files and folders paths can be selected to send
Any files already in the defined recevier's path will stay there during a sync (e.g. no rsync like behavior where files are removed if they aren't found on the sender side)
Cons:
No permanent settings, any paths you define are reset each time you load the app.
Only one folder can be defined to receive which negates some of the value of selecting distinct folders on the sender side. You could still automate the moving of those files on the receiver's end to their correct destination after the transfer completes but thats more painful automation.
No scheduling or automatic syncing upon device discovery
No understanding as to whether files are overwritten every time if the receiving path already has them or if existing files are simply skipped (didn't test this far).
For my case overwriting existing files just means the transfer will take longer especially when we're talking about a folders with GBs of data and automating this sync regularly to insure new files are sent over.
As this was one of the few apps that gave me what I wanted I began work on a Tasker profile with AutoInput actions but being new to AutoInput I was having little success in getting it do what I wanted.
Option 2 - Syncthing :victory:

Apparently an open source alternative to what was BitTorrent Sync and became Resilio Sync. Which I had tried earlier (and why I had initially shrugged off Syncthing), finding it would not link my devices successfully making it a non-starter.
It turns out Syncthing is nearly the perfect solution for my needs. It seems very similar to an rsync style solution. I'm still testing it out but so far so good.
Pros
Automatic syncing of folders that are watched for changes (no job scheduling, changes are detected and syncing begins)
A folder can be defined as the master on a given device. If you only want the files on the phone to move to the HU and not vice versa this is the option for that.
Define individual folders to sync between devices. In my case DSub keeps its album art under /data and its music under /media so this is helpful
Can restrict devices to local IPs and turn off the use of relay servers.
Automatic discovery works but isn't necessary once you've defined each device on their counterpart.
One time setup of folders and devices as settings are presistent
Ability to limit traffic to local network and to specific WiFi networks (by SSID) I've had a little trouble with this so far so not sure it works as expected yet
Cons
File transfers seems a little slower than with WiFi File Sender but more testing is needed to be sure. See speeds of 1-2MB/s but sometimes dipping to 600KB/s. From reading other posts about Syncthing it sounds like the files are encrypted/hashed and otherwise processed and that can cause some of the slow down.
Files deleted on the master will be deleted at slave folders. I believe this can be overridden but it may result in regular manual interventions where your master folder says it is not up to date. Still need to test around this. Ultimately I may let them keep each other up to date since I will still stream the occasional uncached song from my HU.
With the exception of my HeadUnit killing most apps when it goes to sleep, thus requiring I start Syncthing on some condition so that its always running when needed, this app appears to be the solution for my use case with minimal automation.
Will report back if I change or improve this setup or find other issues. For now I'll build a Tasker profile to start this app when my hotspot connection is detected.
