How to search the contents of the phone - Dash 3G, Snap General

What is the best way to search the contents of my phone? I have just migrated from a Palm Centro to the Ozone. On the Palm, I could search for a word, for example, plumber. It would search the notes area of my contacts and in the records of other programs on the phone. How do I do this on the Ozone and with Winmo? Will the phone do this now or do I need a 3rd party app? Probably very simple but I haven't figured out how to do this.
Thanks
David

I got zero response on this one. Here is what I have found. Pocket Informant will search the notes section in your contacts and will pull up the contact that contains the word that you searched for. Inesoft Phone 6 will do this also but appears to be for touchscreen phones only. Maybe this will help someone else.

Total commander searches the entire phone for files. Almost any third party PIM will search messages, email, calender, notes, tasks etc. I use Agenda One

Any way to sort contacts by first name?

I've got myself a new Vario, but I can't seem to get the contacts to sort by first name - is there any way to do this?
Sorry if this is a dumb question! I've been mucking about with it for ages!
Many thanks
Zakkz,
Welcome to the forum . Please read this introduction.
Here's a couple of links on your question.

yes it is possible,
even different ways to get this:
you can use a little freeware application 'File As First Last" that will be included in the default contacts applications. It allows you to save the contact by "firstname lastname" 'or even by company etc. The application can be found on pocketpcfreewares.com: http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=828
you could also change the contact settings on your desktop...within the Outlook contact, you can change the setting 'save contact as', there you can chose to use "firstname lastname"
yet another way to solve this problem is to use another application for your contacts. Pocket Informant is really very good! there you can easily chose to sort the contacts by "firstname lastname"...you can also chose to see the contact pictures in the list of contacts, which is really great I think!
and you've got many many other options and settings to change the calendar/contacts/tasks views...also a really great search function within Pocket Informant...try it for yourself...

Exporting Call log on windows mobile 5?

I've had the most trouble trying to figure this one out.
I have a client who needs to be able to export or record in a sortable format, his call log. Particularly the phone number, contact name, call time and duration, and of course date.
There's several ways to go about it. I've tried the service at www.1800message.com which has given me the most success, but now they seem to be on hold for storage issues.
I've also tried the phone dashboard app that's out there, however, what it exports is really not useful because there is no contact name mapped to the phone numbers, you just see the numbers.
I've also tried another app that did outlook journaling in the windows mobile device, but again its no good for the client since you manually have to select each call to put in the journal.
Finally, the one I really wanted to try was Modaco smart journal, which just was a tray app that synced the call log to outlook (again, journal, but you could get reports from that), however its seemed to completely dissapear from the internet.
So what is out there besides what I've found? I even read somewhere that call log export was a function of WM5, but I've found no supporting evidence since, or even the originating article of such a rumor.
Isn't the log just a hidden database file just like the calendar items and contacts, etc? I've never tried but maybe you can use excel or another program to read it. You could occasionally copy the file to the desktop then compile the databases together and remove duplicate entries.

Any ideas on where to look and or known possible filetypes? I hadn't had time to pick through all phone files, but just curious if anyone can give me direction there.

I'm currently working on this. I intend to extend my PPCBckpContacts application, so SMS, Calls history, Tasks, appointments and Speed dial can be backed up in csv files.
The calls log is in the pim.vol.

Is there any way to view the contents? I just bought SKTools, but it doesn't seem to support working with the pim.vol database, even though it gives me record counts for the different tables.

The pim.vol contains several databases, so yes you could see the contents by using an hex editor, but it's not easy. The best way is using CEDB/EDB api from windows to access the records of the db.
Cheers,

Hmm, so basically I'd have to develop a WM application that utilized that api to read the contents of the pim.vol file and exported it?
I've got a few years of programming under my belt, but I really have 0 windows/windows mobile experience.
If its something simple, I could probably read up and compile an app to do it, but just seems like a daunting task, especially on the cost to benefit side of things with what time it would take for me to get up to speed and figure out creating an application.
Are there any tools out there for the EDB type of database?

That's what I did in PPCContactsMgr, in order to get the missed calls in order to add a phone number to an existing contact.
Now I'm working on the backup.
I really don't know, I put my hands in the mud, I made a lot of tests and finally found something reasonable to get the infos.

MDA Vario II - no reminders

I use a MDA Vario II (from t-mobile) and, begining with a couple of days before, I get no reminders to appointments anymore. I suspect that it is happening since I have instaled PocketBreeze 5.0.11, but i am not sure that PocketBreeze is the cause.
Does anybody else face the same problem? What can be done, except a hard reset (I am not so thrilled by the ideea to install everything again)?
Have you tried checking your notification queue for duplicates and/or out of date entries.
You can try scarybear checknotifications, memmaid or sk tools for this (prob there are others too)
Try this first, see if there are any duplicates or out of date entries. Delete all these, soft reset and then try again. Don't delete anything if you don't know what it is (unless it comes up under duplicates).
I use a combination of the above tools as I find that they often find dups or out of date entries that the others miss. Try checknotifications first (free), and see if this helps.
Hello marisa,
thank you for the hint, it seems to be working now. To be true, I already bought SKTools yesterday, because I found some other post with a similar problem. But I only ran the "Invalid Registry Entries" and "Invalid Registry Values" utilities, being afraid to delete anything. But after your post I ran the "Notification Queue" utility and checked all entries that refer CALENDAR.EXE And for all birthdays there were duplicates.
How do they got there? I initially synchronized the calendar in my old PalmVx with the Outlook (there I had the birthdays as normal appointments, not in contacts). Than connected my MDA per USB and ActiveSync to my PC. I manually inserted all the birthdays in the Outlook's contacts, causing Outlook to automatically create a duplicate "all day event". Than I deleted the birthday appointments which I get from the old PalmVx. In all of this time my MDA was automatically synchronizing with Outlook, so practically when I deleted the entries, they also were deleted from the MDA's calendar.
Now the question: since Outlook, ActiveSync and Windows Mobile are all Microsoft products, why weren't the duplicates also deleted from the Notification Queue? Why the garbage that needs to be cleaned with 3rd party tools and hours of searching posts on forums? Whatever.
Thank you again anyway!
PS: so PocketBreeze was not the cause.
They don't call it Active Stink for nothing you know!
Regarding Pocket Breeze, Spb Diary, Ilauncher and Pocket Plus, I don't know if these have anything to do with the problem.
I would say they must do, as most of these problems seem to occur when or shortly after people have installed one or any of them (or similar).
However, there are some people who get these problems with just the standard pre-installed software.
I personally think it's the interaction of Activesync, the native operating system and these today plugins which sets up something unexpected.
It could also be that people install both (many versions) of one of these in order to compare them, and decide which to buy, and they interfere with each other.
I have even had both version installed at the same time (but only one activated) for quick comparison. So, it's really hard to apportion blame for this. The other day I actually had to remove 2 identical templates, which had the date 2999! How's that for weird?
Never mind. All's well now, and that's the main thing.
Hmm, i must say that PocketBreeze was installed while I was performing the previously described birthday synchronisations. Whether it had any blame - I don't know. Uninstalling PocketBreeze was the first thing to do by trying to solve the problem, didn't help, the damage was already done. What I know is that I will install it again, because it sure gives me a much nicer overview. And that I will watch the Notification Queue closely from nowone

I don't think Pocket BReeze is related to my problem with appointments and alarms, I've had it installed all along and the problem only started very recently.

I'm using MemMaid but I'm still a bit confused about the entries that appear in the notification queue.
Can I safely delete any entries that relate to calendar entries in the past without this actually deleting it from the calendar itself?
Also, I have a load of entries in the queue that start:
\\.\Notifications\NamedEvents\SCRIPT:0x0
The detail for these shows a date and a (fairly random) time. Most are in the future (and generally in the early hours of the morning.)
Can anyone tell me what these entries are?
thanks
Mark

I'm no expert, but my rule of thumb is:
If I don't know what it is/does then I leave it alone.
there is quite a bit of 'stuff' that has to run at various times to make the system run properly - that's when these phantom notifications are supposed to get cleared up, but don't. So, leave these alone.
Regarding the calendar entries, it's just the notifications which come up under memmaid's notfications check. So, if 3 months ago you had a dentist appointment and set the reminder for this to a day before say, and for some reason that notification didn't get dismissed and now you see it in memmaid, you can delete this. It won't delete the appointment, just the notification which is of no use to you now anyway and is confusing your system.
Bill, I think I know what happened with your duplicate birthday stuff.
Are you using Pocket Informant? or another 3rd party diary application? Maybe even Pocket Breeze itself.
Basically, I think you have 2 applications creating calendar events from contact birthdays. One is Outlook, the other is one of the ones I've mentioned. The solution is to turn it off on one or the other.
I already solved my problem by deleting the double entries in the Notification QUeue.
I was using PocketBreeze. I currently uninstalled it, but I will install it again and test your theory.
What do you mean by turning Outlook off? I use the Outlook on my PC to create appointments and I expect ActiveSync to upload them on the MDA by synchronization, even if the one managing them there is PocketBreeze. And backwards, when I create them with PocketBreeze on the MDA - i expect them to be downloaded on my PC by synchronisation.
Do you mean that there is also the preinstalled so called Outlook Mobile on my MDA which conflicts with PocketBreeze? Shouldn't this be the main concern of the PocketBreeze developers, to ensure that their software is not producing redundant double entries?
Anyway, if you mean turning off the preinstalled Outlook Mobile on the MDA, how exactly should I do it, where do I find this setting?
Sorry Bill, I haven't been very clear.
I think there is a special extra function in Outlook and also at the same time in some of these other pocket pc diary applications which create birthday calendar entries from contacts.
I am fairly certain that Pocket Informant does.
I am not suggesting that you don't sync with Outlook, just that one of the third party applications may be creating a duplicate using this extra function and so is outlook.
In Pocket informant there is an option to turn this extra function off, so then you only get the outlook ones. Hope that explains better.
Added:
In the Pocket Informant manual it explains this quite well when discussing options:
Apply Contact Birthday/Anniversaries
If you save anniversary and birthday information with your contact data, this option can read and enter the events into your calendar for you. However, because Outlook will do the same, it is recommended that you leave the option turned off if you synchronize with Outlook, in order to
avoid duplicates or performance issues.
Nothing to be sorry about
I understand now what you mean, thank you for the explanations. I will search the PocketBreeze's options for a similar setting.
And probably I will take a look at the PocketInformant too.

Pocket Informant contact grouping

Hi, i've been using pocket informant for quite sometime and love it.
however, i don't see any option to group contacts such as friends, family, work etc, like we have in even primitive nokia phones.
am i missing some setting or is there any other way to do it?
does pocket informant support this by any chance? it would be very useful in sending mass messages etc.
would appreciate any help
thanx
I'm using a Beta of PI but this is how I can group contacts:
Menu > Show Contact > Per Company
Mine is in Dutch so it might not be the correct translation
Contact Group

The answer is Yes.
Pocket Informant support grouping in contact.
Every time you insert new contact it should also ask (in detail) for group and also support grouping already exist in outlook (PC and PPC).
Try to search the option.

Just a suggestion, but did you know that WebIS has their own forum for PI? It is located here. You MIGHT want to register there, and drop a message in their forum. They seem pretty active in sorting out users' questions.
Good luck,

The easiest way in WM to do this is assign a category for each contact (i.e. business, personal etc.). In PI, you can hit Menu, Category Filter, and choose only the filters you want to see at the time.

Business people out there?

Hi
I have my HD for already a week and it's amazing!!.
but I decided to buy it because I needed a tool like this for business purposes, by now I'm using it for mail on the go, and of course like a powerful agenda with Pocket Informant, but due my short experience with a pocket PC, I know that there must be much more uses and software that I don't know yet, then I would like to ask for advices about this matter, may be software or even tips to be able to to take more advantages of this incredible phone!
BTW I found this two thread, but are quite short

hi, im not quite sure what you are asking for? but, i use mine for work to. i dont find the need for anything extra than what is already included in M$ mobile office
i use the calendar and outlook which is synced through my organisations exchange server though activesync over the mobile network. in the main i do this manually but also by setting it up to do autosync at intervals.
you can set it to have pushmail too if your companies mail server will allow this
pocket outlook does all that the full pc version does (near as dammit) email, access to my corporate address book, meeting scheduling and invites etc etc
is that what you wanted to know?
OK, here is the "business" oriented sub-set of all my apps:

Ilium Listpro 5.0.0.2016 http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/lp/listpro.htm
Listpro is great - I use this for whole loads of lists on the PC and HD and swop the lists back and forth

Metro is useful for business trips (and pleasure)
MxCalculator 2.1 http://www.trancreative.com
NewsGator Go! 2.0.0.25419 http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals...o/Default.aspx
I use a RSS feeder for business news
Pocket Informant 8.51 http://www.webis.net/index.php
RCX Lexipedia 1.2 http://www.revolution.cx/Lexipedia/Lexipedia.htm
Yes, I know this is an old app but it's still there when I need answers and don't want to go online
SBSH PocketBreeze 5.4.15 http://www.sbsh.net/products/windows...c/pocketbreeze
Fantastic today plugin to view my calender (must be used with SecondToday)

thanks, well yes something like that I was looking for, but may be a little more focused in meetings and projects, I'm using list Listpro for this two purposes but I can imagine there are better and specialize software for this.
about meetings I need to lead meeting sometimes, and write down some ideas or comments in each topic on this meetings.
same with projects, I start a project, and I need to write down all the steps of it, and the progress of each one too
thanks Cheesy Dave, there are really useful app there!
thanks audscott
i guess im a caveman when it comes to such business things... i just use ms word to make lists
notepad for basic notes
i find that the ms mobile office suite included does all i need (along with the other software in pocket outlook such as tasks etc)
small tip if you do want to use a different front end like SBSH PocketBreeze or spb pocketplus etc
dont need to run secondtoday type progs which just chew up more memory, just untick manila from the today plugins screen and do away with manila. personally i find it to be just bells and whistles and not much function, uses loads more system resources than other after market apps with nothing more (less in my opinion) on offer
i use spb pocketplus together with spb weather and spb phone suite all sat as my front screen. i can access all my needed software with one touch, make calls with one touch, switch ring profiles with one touch fire up wifi with one touch... in fact 99% of what i need to do with my HD i do with 1 touch using this set of software. the only time i need to use the stylus is for typing (im kak handed using my fingers to type and am pretty fast with the stylus)
as i said up there^^^^ i use MS office for all my other bits as i can bang it stright over to my laptop to use the full versions if necessary
i guess its down to what you need, what you like and what you get used to. ive been using this combo of progs for 4 years now so am a bit stuck in the mud so to speak
ill try to do a screen grab of my today page to show you what i mean.... but you might not like it as i am very much in favour of function over form
(ive trialled spb mobile shell and spb diary but again find them unecessary.... why do you need a diary on your today screen when it is one touch away and a hell of a lot more confidential if your diary isnt open for all to see all the time (i work in healthcare so confidentiality is a big requirement! )
business
I have been using pda in my construction business for many years to keep appointments. I tend to forget them and rely on the alarm. I have most of the incoming phone calls redirected to the phone. I use agenda one because you can link contacts to appointements i.e the alarm sounds to tell me to meet Mrs Smith. I click on that and it brings up Mrs Smiths address.
We are trying business contact manager for outlook in the office as a CRM and have tried the pda add in to view them. It just does,t work. I have heard over other software that makes the contacts visible in outlook mobile.
I also use mine mainly for Business (and pleasure), work in an Australasian role with travel in Australia and New Zealand.
Must admit I am VERY impressed with the function and accuracy of WorldCard mobile. Sure beats the manual data entry of B-Card info
A few of the apps I'm using on my HD
SPB Traveller - to manage my flights, accomodation and rental car bookings.
GarminXT - with Australia and New Zealand maps to help me get to the places I need to.
SPB Weather - helps me know what to expect and what to take when I travel.
SPB Time - My travel alarm clock etc.
SPB Wallet - Helps me remember the multitude of logon details for company (and private)
systems access as well as credit cards and so on.
SPB Finance - Tracks my out of office expenses for me.
Pocket Investor - Mobile management of my stocks.
Softmaker Suite - A really great set of applications which provide me FULL edit and formatting alignment for my Word, Excel and Powerpoint files.
Pocket Informant - Replaces the PIM
RESCO Utility pack - Great file management for shifting documents around, deleting etc.
A few other general apps.
HD Tweak
Gsen
Sprite Backup
MSS Convertor
SKTools
SPB Mobile Shell (but using the "ChangeSKIN" application to provide multiple contact photo screens etc. )
SPB Phone Suite

Hi jonajuna, I am a new Touch HD user (and this is my first PDA). Since you use the Office so extensively, could you please help me - how can I open more than one document e.g. in Excel? I often use Excel documents in my work and I constantly need to copy&paste info from one Excel file into another.
Thanks!
I'm also useing mine for business and pleasure. Works well with appointments, addresses, GPS, etc. during business hours.
I've picked up an HTC Touch HD, and I'm a semi-business/pleasure/personal user.
Here are some of the items that I found were useful for me.
As far as the MSDict and MSPhrase apps go, you can find English -> Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Russian, Malaysian, Chinese (trad and simplified), Korean and so on!
Here are the links for the Japanese one since I've been up all night downloading these.

http://htc-touch-hd-t8282.handster.com/product.php?id=639
And SPB Traveler is great when it comes on converting common knowledge from overseas such as units, clothing sizes and linguistics as it helps me identify and use the right phrases.

Also, since I'm both in class and at work, sometimes I'll need a really powerful calculator and the Touch HD does not disappoint with it's capabilities.

Hi there,
i´m also one of those guys who using the HTC HD for business.

At least it depends on your special needs.
Main focus for me:
Mail -> BBconnect
ToDo list -> MLO ( My Life Organized )
Calender -> Calender Touch
Travelling -> SPB Traveller
