[I require your knowledge!] HTC HD2...cracked screen.

I'm sorry if this is the wrong section to be posting this...but!
I was sitting at a buddies house waiting for my brother to come pick me up...my brother called me to say he was on his way, I got off the phone, set it in my lap. 5 minutes later I see his truck, so I stood up not realizing my phone was still in my lap...thought it was in my pocket. At first it didn't even realize I dropped it, I thought my friend next to me dropped his phone or something. Then I heard "Oooooo, damn that sucks." I looked down and there's my not even a month old hd2 chillin' on the ground with a cracked screen. So yeah, that happened about 30 minutes ago haha.
I got home and did a little research on what the warranty covers...

Thats the quick start guide..and this is what it says.
General Precautions
Avoid applying excessive pressure to the device
Do not apply excessive pressure on the screen and the device to
prevent damaging them and remove the device from your pants’
pocket before sitting down. It is also recommended that you store
the device in a protective case and only use the device stylus
or your finger when interacting with the touch screen. Cracked
display screens due to improper handling are not covered by the
warranty.

Instantly I was like...fuuuuuuuuckkkkkkkk. So what can I do about this.. I went looking for replacement screens cause I was just going to replace it myself, I had to do the same thing with my ipod touch and it was pretty easy. It was like $30 to replace my ipod screen so I thought well it shouldn't be too costly. Ended up the screen would be like $65 to replace...which I don't got that kind of money, I'm 15 with no income lol. I haven't told my mom yet cause I wanted to know what I'm dealing with. So pretty much I'm asking if this is my last resort..to really have to spend $65 to replace it. Or is there a different way of dealing with this...Well I'm looking forward to reading your posts, hopefully I get some good news hah.
Here's the damage.
I did pretty good, right? Haha
dang dude that sucks, that happend to my friends a few days ago too, but yeah dude thats like the last thing you can do, you sure you havent found anything lower priced on ebay? oh and mow some lawns u could get some cash

Lmao yeah me niether, cheap mom . btw is it just the glass thats cracked or is it your lcd thats busted too?
this happened to my fiances phone. pissed me off pretty good. i have messed with a couple other phones and ipods and such, so i figured i'd try to do the replacement. i watched a 8 min vid on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdihThJFyz4) of a guy replacing the busted digitizer (glass) and it seemed pretty damn involved. the replacements were all about $65 but i figured i'd look into having a pro do it.
i live in the saint louis area, and called a well known local phone repair shop (wireless toyz) and they said they won't even touch the hd2 and evo, and i'm assuming the new droid x as well. the tech claimed their district manager wont allow them to do it because they had only done ONE so far and they screwed up a lot more stuff when they got it opened up. these guys work on A LOT of phones, and they had trouble with it.
i called another repair shop and he said $130 total, and he was actually in the middle of repairing one at the time (digitizer and lcd). he was the only guy i could find in stl that would work on it. another company quoted me $100, but he has only worked on iphones and was 40+ miles away from the house.
good luck, that sucks. hope you've got insurance, nobody will cover that on a warranty. tmobile's insurance (which i canceled!) wanted $130 for the deductable, but they'll just send you a brand new phone with another 1 year warranty. i didnt have insurance, and its costing me $130, and now since a 'non preferred' tech has worked on it, i'm assuming my warranty is void.

Its just the glass. Thank god, lol I can still use my phone until I find a way to get $100. Cause I guess If I replace the screen myself it voids the warranty so i'm just gunna save up money and have t-mobile send me a new phone. I'm not even sure what the exact price is gunna be.

I hope I have insurance, if my mom didnt buy it im gunna make her pay for my new phone haha. Cause I wouldve bought it, and she made me pay her back for this stupid phone lol.
Realize your local phone repair specialist was hired off of Craigslist for $9 an hour because he could solder. Its not surprising they screw up more hten they fix. I think the reason they don't mess with these phones is 1. The LCD prices are higher then normal phones, 2. Its pricey as hell if you screw up and have to replace the phone, 3. Not to many manuals or walkthroughs out yet. Chances are your just as qualified as they are. If they had someone that really knew their stuff repairing phones they would go out on their own and just buy broken phones then sell them themselves and make 6 times the money.
the shop i took mine to is called green mobile (greenmobileman.com)
the guy knows his ****. he's the owner of the franchise, theyre trying to expand nation wide. all they do is sell phones that they've parted together from other broke phones. he doesn't buy new parts on the phones that he sells, they're completely recycled. i understand what you mean by "the guy hired off craiglist," but i believe this guy isn't one of them.
No insurance I assume? This is exactly why I pay 6 bucks a month or whatever for the insurance because they replace it no matter what you do.
I've done this too, but I had insurance through my credit card and they replaced my phone at no charge (going through T-Mobile's insurance costs a deductible, but it's well worth it if you don't have a better option). Sorry for your misfortune..
I had the same thing happen to me. I called HTC and they were able to fix it for $50. Good luck.

Hypothetically, how scratched a screen could you take w/o paying $100 for a replace?

I normally treat my electronics like newborns, with cases and screen protectors. However, I am one of the people that fried my keys while flashing a rom and lost my 4G forever. So I paid $100 and got a new Evo through Asurion.
The new Evo was naked, and I had a wedding to go to the same night I got it. Well, after I got hammered I have a vague memory of repeatedly dropping the Evo onto the concrete while trying to get into a cab. (I don't drink very often).
So I wake up in the morning with a scratched Evo screen. There are maybe like 10 scratches.
I want a new Evo so bad, I hate the scratches. But I just can't see shelling out another $100 in order to have a better screen again.
I thought I'd get opinions from the group to make sure that I'm not crazy. Or to prove that I am too anal, OCD, and crazy.
Thanks for any responses.
Like you, I treat my gadgets like little babies. As for scratched screens, I hate them too. But I don't think you need to pay the $100 through asurion.
Apparently, with Sprint's new repair policy, you can go into a store a pay a flat $35 and they'll replace your screen for you. Someone on this forum did that rather recently and didn't need to use their insurance. Do a search on the forums for scratched screen.

Interesting! Thanks for the info. I'll swing by at lunch and check it out.
I dropped mine and chipped the biezel and just hardly chipped the corner of the screen, took it in and they replaced it for free with my TEP. just go in and pay the 30 bucks or whatever and have em replace it
Yeah, the wild card for me is that I have this old $4/month insurance plan that they don't even offer any more. I know that it covers replacement, but I don't know if it covers anything else.
Here's a link to the post I was telling you about earlier.....

Awesome. Thanks to all for your help. I have the $4 ERP plan. That means they'll only replace it for a $100 deductible, they won't repair it for "free." So I just paid the $35. He switched out the screen in like 10 minutes right in front of me. I didn't realize it would be that easy. It even replaces the bezel and everything.
Hardware 003. Epson, I think (since the auto-brightness "fades" instead of "steps.")

Cracked Evo Screen, Thank god for Insurance!

so, i recently received a replacement Evo from the repair center, and not even a full week later, my screen shatters from a 2ft fall . I left my evo on my lap, and rushed out of my car and completely forgot i had placed my evo on my lap. Well hearing my phone smack the road was a quick reminder of it. Lucky Damaged screens are covered under free replacement from the sprint repair center. Sprint use to never replace damaged phone with out having to pay the deductible. is this new, or have i just been dealing with the wrong people? attacheted is a picture of my evo. by the way, although the screen is shattered, it is 100% fully functional .
I just went threw the EXACT same thing on Friday pretty much. The FIRST time my EVO ever fell (about 2~3 feet) it shattered the screen.
I stuck my EVO in my hoodie pocket in my garage and the rubber case had hung up on the materiel so it didn't get all the way in my pocket. I let go thinking it was all the way in my pocket (was in a rush to get somewhere) and it hit the concrete floor face down.
The outside screen was 100% ok but the inner screen, the one that actually lights up was shattered.
I took it to my local sprint store which was only 3 blocks away and asked about a replacement expecting to pay the $100.00 dollar deductible. I was informed there was NO deductible and that Sprint had changed the policy a couple months ago with regards to replacing the broken screens. I asked why the change, because so many have broken? The store manager said yep, pretty much. Easier to just replacement them then deal with pissed off customers and potential law suits over something that breaks SO easy.
Anyway they were out of Novatech screens so they sent me over to a Corporate store. Took about two hours to get it fixed. They replaced the WHOLE front and even gave me the old one back because I had a Zagg protector on it. They told me to go to Zagg.com and claim a warranty on it which I did, should be here within a week!
same here, i walked in thinking they weren't going to cover it. I myself use to cause a stink when they wouldn't cover cracked screens. makes things a lot easier when sprint actually works with you. now my replacement is on its way, should be there tomorrow. i really am considering buying the otter box.
But in the long run, seems as though MOST people end up paying more into insurance than they actually get out of it
I absolutely agree, you end up paying $100 just to get a used phone. I just checked ##786# my phone was initially activated 7/1510

You even had a screen protector and it still cracked?
I've got to watch mine more carefully. I bought the Sprint screen protector for mine. Even after countless drops no cracks yet. But i can see a couple cracks on screen protector but not on screen itself.
Yay for insurance, even-though many would pay more into insurance than they get, at least there is a sense of protection.
Yup, that is one of the sprint sold protectors, it helps with scratches... Thats about it. Yes, if you love your evo, be careful haha

Same problem with my homeowners and car insurance.
One thing I realized about insurance....you only need it when you dont have it.

[Q] Sprint's repair service (Screen repair)

H'okay. So. I recently pretty much shattered my Evo's screen, though everything still works and the phone is still fully functional. Therefore I've been a little lazy with going and getting it repaired.
Now that I have the day off tomorrow, I'm wanting to go to go into my local Sprint repair center and having them switch out the screen for me.
I just had a couple questions:
1. I do pay $7/month for insurance on the phone, will they charge me for the screen? If so, would it be worth it to just pay my $50 deductible for a new phone? (This is what I've paid in the past for a blackberry through insurance, I want to assume its more for a smart phone, but I have no clue). I've read mixed things on this, where screen repair costs $35, free, etc.
2. Should I unroot and factory reset my phone before I take the phone in? Again, I've read mixed things on here/google. I've heard that they no longer care, especially for a simple screen repair. I've read people have had their warranty revoked. I'd just like some insight on the issue?
Sorry if these have been answered several times, like I said, I did some research before posting and never really got a straight forward answer.
Thanks.

First... The deductible on an Evo is $100. and Insurance no longers covers screens as far as I know. They did for a little while but when my wife broke her screen we found out they no longer did... Because they felt bad for her not knowing they replaced hers for free and she didnt have to pay the deduct. She also did not unroot prior to taking it in... some people say you should... some will say not so... I personally wouldnt...
They changed the policy. Now any physical damage will cost you $100 for a new phone, they wont just replace the screen for 35 anymore. I would unroot it or snap it in half. Just don't want to take the chance of telling you no because its rooted. Either way your looking at $100 or eBay and replace it yourself. Good luck.
Edit: just checked eBay and you can snag a screen and all the tools for $17. I would go that route lol
Damn. Looks like I was late on the good repair service. ><
Hmph. I've been looking into repairing the screen myself. The only problem I could see me having is getting the current, shattered screen off. I don't have any type of tool to apply heat to break the adhesive down, and I'd see it as being VERY tedious getting all the glass shards of screen totally off. Literally the only thing keeping my screen together and probably on my phone is my screen protector, haha.
Well, I guess it's time to look into ordering some tools and a LCD display, cause I'm not gonna fork over $100 for a refurb'd Evo when mine works perfectly and has done so for the past year. :/
I don't know when they changed that policy... but I brought mine in on monday, guy thought it was a cracked screen, so he was just going to replace it... but he broke something when taking it apart, so he ordered me a brand new one...
But the point is... he was in the process of taking it apart and replacing it... he asked beforehand if I had insurance... so I'm pretty sure they still cover that... Try a different store maybe?
Ask for a one-time courtesy replacement, we're allowed to do that. Otherwise, it's $100 to Asurion unless you want to attempt it yourself.
It may be a little bit more expensive but spring for the complete front panel kit instead of just the digitizer. The LCD may be damaged underneath without showing it, so you could run into problems if you replace the digitizer. Plus, it's a lot easier.
I've only done one digitizer replace and it's not the best thing in the world. Front panel is way easier. Just remember to move the earpiece speaker and front camera.

S8 screen/digitizer repair

Hello-
https://www.digitalsupplyusa.com/pr...56a1jgdGItXQCDwzJqGT3mCVjVGhR-FxoC3NcQAvD_BwE
My kid dropped his S8 and now the screen is cracked and unresponsive. From what I have read, it is the digitizer and the screen that will have to be replaced. I searched on the forum and saw lots of threads from 2017. I was wondering if anyone has any advice as to the repair. I asked on another forum and the only answer I got was "don't do it, too risky."
I used the Googles and found the kit above. That kit should be all I need, right? Anyone done one recently? Is there a cheaper place to buy the required parts?
Thanks.

I take it you don't have insurance for the phone? I cracked my screen not too long ago and I'm saving up the 250 to replace just the screen, I can only imagine how expensive it would be with the digitizer. Also I agree don't try it out for yourself, from what I see it's complicated and if you mess it up, that's it no going back

No insurance.
I surprised there is so much reluctance to fix these phones. The guy at the local fix it shop down the street tells me he charges $260 bucks and, no offense to him, but he doesn't seem like a brain surgeon. If he's able to do it, then certainly those of us in the Samsung community out to be doing it, right?

I'm pretty sure he has some type of qualifications to be able to do the repair. Anywhere charges about 250 and usually come with a guaranteed repair service. I mean I read the steps in order to do that and it seems pretty complicated. Plus most shops don't use heat to soften the adhesive anymore, they use a freezing method that's much safer.

Yea i have always be reluctant to use heat I would much rather risk cold damage to a battery than heat....
But I also most of the time am replacing full panels So it dont matter how the old comes out careful around what ever flex cables and buttons but for the most part I just rip em out Cant break it any worse than it is No need to be gentle with the broke screens lol
On a side note this is a sly pry. A metal pry tool is A must
