Updates and backups - Touch HD General

Hi all, this might have been posted before but I couldnt find it really refering to what I need, so was wondering if anyone could help.
At the moment I have a standard touch hd (from Orange in the UK) with all the original roms etc, only unlocked to any network. Its running win 6.1.
Is there any way I can update the 6.1 to a newer version and are there any real advantages of doing so?
Is there also a way to backup my current roms/data on phone inc ase I do update things and things go wrong?
Is there also a way to backup my contacts/messages on my phone so that I can restore them incase of a problem?
Any help would be appreciated.

I uppdate my HD to 6.5, after that I disable defoult UI, install Spb MS, and few days ago discover, here on XDA the mod of the mod (mobile sense! <--). To backup online I used zyb but vodafone had buyed it so right now it's doesen't work.
5m ago I start My phone, application in my rom, use my old old old ID & PASS et voila', backup online of sms, agenda, to do, etc...etc...etc.... .
Try to find some other thread about touch hd but I think u can uppgrade to wm6.5 without problem and also backup online. U can 1st check if wm6.1 can run my phone

Im kind of unsure what u mean, can I not backup onto my computer?

Plenty of ways to backup. To backup emails/contacts you can use PIM Backup or activesync & outlook or 3rd party apps like SPB Backup, Resco Backup, Sprite
If you are wanting to backup everything your best to use the 3rd party apps as mentioned above. Another method worth investigating for quick install of everything after flashing is SASHIMI
If you looking to flash a new rom read this step by step guide.
Advantages of newer roms are tweaks/fixes implemented into them and also with wm6.5 more finger friendly interface

cool, thanks for the advice.
Do the roms have wm 6.5 already on them, or is it a case of gupdating to wm6.5 seperately.

roms basically have either wm6.5 or wm6.1 on them. If you currently have wm6.1 and you want wm6.5 you'll need to flash a rom with wm6.5 on it. If you look at title to each rom thread you should be able to work out which is which

Official ROM do have TF3D in it no matter what. It probably wont have all the programs. Just go through what you have make a list, and see if there is cabs available for it. If it is, then you will get all your programs back. But your settings will be lost, unless you know how to back them up.

Need some clarifications!

Hi, I need some clarifications as the topic says..
I want to install:
this
and
SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 (btw, can someone give me a link to the download?)
I've installed SPB 3.5 before and therefore I know that it doesn't delete any old things like the standard HTC Topaz ROM. So SPB wasn't really a question, but I wonder how this HSPL works. I've read the guide but I don't get it, how does it work. Can someone explain more specific. I want to try out some ROM without deleting my custom ROM from HTC (WM 6.5 Pro).
Then, will the sms-layout work together with SPB 3.5?
And as it says in the install-description, you have to disable and enable stuff. And that will change my system.. so it doesn't feel right to install it before I have a backup on my phone - if something goes wrong.
So shortly, how do I backup my whole system (ROM, files, settings)? And how do I reinstall my backup? (don't forget to also explain how the HSPL works)
Thx for reply!

haha, maybe it was to complicated written?
To sum up:
- How to fully back up Topaz stock ROM?
- How to recover/reinstall the stock ROM?
And if you want an example of what I meen: read this (it's how you back up your Xperia)

Hi,
You should use search. It really helps
" i want install ...this". So, what stopping you. Download, install, if dont like uninstall.
SPB MS3.5. SPB.com site or google.
HardSPL is changes the Bootloader so you can install a different ROM regardless if it's signed.
And you can not have 2 ROMs at the same time.
If you want try custom ROMs you will have to install Hard SPL. Without it you can upgrade only with HTC ROMs.
About dumping and rebuilding. Use wiki page about Topaz. Everything you need is there.
Good luck with flashing,

sry, but I can't find anything useful :S can't you give me some links, to backup stock rom and reinstall it?
when I watched the videoguides of XperiaX1 it was so simple... you could find your stock ROM in a sticky in your phones part of the forum. And also not just the stock rom for uk, but also a swedish stock rom. And when you downloaded that. You simply copied the file to your microSD root direction and went to the bootloader and poff you got the original ROM. So, plz get me some direct links to this

As far as im aware you can only back up the apps/settings not the rom itself, if you wanted to go back to the Stock rom you would need to download it and flash it again.

I don't know if htc's stoc rom is the same as the one provided by orange.
On my old I900 omnia it was possible to backup the entire rom Using GrandPrix.
I hope there is a similar solution for LEO.
You can download the original HTC Orange ROM from their website and set it aside should it ever become necessary to send the phone back for service.
http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=297&act=sd&cat=all
It's my understanding that after installing HSPL if you need to revert to the original bootloader, you just have to flash a factory ROM and you're there. However, I've never put that to a test just yet. One other thing, be careful on which radio version is in the ROM you're using from HTC because HSPL will only install if your radio version is (if memory serves) 1.42 or earlier.
No reason to back it up - the ROM image is the backup itself, of course without data or user-installed programs. If you're looking for a good backup program, I've been very happy with SPB Backup which has been very reliable and will restore your entire machine, inclusive of data and applications you've installed yourself.
HTH.
ETA: I'd probably download ALL the HTC factory ROMs and patches and keep them on my drive and/or external media just in case the company ever decides that nobody wants those 'old' images anymore and discontinues the hosting of them.

htc touch hd

hi guys im new here and im new in all of this.
i just bought htc touch hd so i got some question.
1. my htc with wm6.1 some people told me that it will be good if i will upgrade the wm6.1 to 6.5 and my device will be faster'
so how can i do that? i need to buy the software or it is free?
if i'll upgrade the software all the settings and the software will be remove?
2. where can i find sites for free apps?
thanks a lot.
read the wiki!!!
has all your answers!
it is free
need to hspl first (sticky in rom dev)
it will wipe everything but you can back up your data
it will wipe your system but you can revert back to your old rom easily
find free apps here!
o.k what is hspl? what is ROM?
do you recommended me to upgrade to wm6.5?
how i backup all the programs i dont have the installations. thers a guids how to do that all?
thank you!
hspl is a hard second program loader. you need to flash that to be able to change the operating system on your device.
roms are images of the operating system. they provide windows mobile in different versions (6.1 / 6.5 / 6.5.3 or even 6.5.5) and additionally come with different versions of manila (aka touchflo 3d or in newer versions also sense).
these are very basic things that you should read more about before attempting to flash your device, or you will break it. it is not like "press one button - done". flashing your device means tempering with your waranty and bypassing locks, set by htc.
you should definetely read threads like the "dummy's guide to hspl and uspl" in the rom development section of the blackstone forum.
in that section you will also find the differnet roms provided here, marked with [Release].
have a look at the different threads to find a rom that you like from the screenshots and read through the experiences, people post with it.
also, a lot of basic windows mobile information can be found on wikipedia's windows mobile and blackstone pages.
and of course, most of all, on xda-dev's own wiki here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=File:HTC_Blackstone.png
oh, and you shouldn't really back up programs, but re-install them on the new operating system, backing up too much stuff will cause your rom to run instable and slow. you should only use pimbackup, or MS myphone, or outlook, to backup personal data.
if you ever consider to go back to the exact rom you are using now, you could make a full backup with spb backup, but restoring that backup on another rom is highly un-recommended.
wwooww its complicated i think i will give up thanks anyway.

Don't give up. That's defeatist talk. Yeah, it is intemidating at first but nothing worth doing is easy. Just read and you will understand. I read and read and read and when I set down to do it I was able to install a custom rom without incident. That was a year and a half ago. I'm probably going to install a new rom soon so I will read and read and read again to refresh my memory. Part of the complexity stemed from there being two different methods of flashing the phone, iirc. If you give up on trying to mod your phone you might as well jsut have bought an apple.

Please help with HTC Touch HD (Blackstone)

Hey there,
A close friend of mine has a HTC Touch HD and he never updated its ROM or anything because, well, he's not really familiar with the whole Windows Mobile or HTC world in general, and neither am I.
It has recently been freezing way too much and I believe that's because it has never been formatted, updated, or anything. Therefore, I borrowed the device from him in an attempt to try and fix that.
I'm familiar with Nokias, BlackBerries, iPhones, and have actually owned a couple of HTC phones but for a short while and never really bothered with backing up, updating, or such.
Can someone please guide me on what to do? I believe it has Windows Mobile 6.1 and the latest is 6.5 (according to research I've done). There is also something called ROM which is the OS, I suppose, that you install on the device, and I found hundreds of ROM and I don't know WHICH one to install or even HOW to install it.
I have also downloaded HTC Sync from HTC's website but it's not detecting my phone at all. Right now I downloaded Windows Mobile Device Center for Windows 7 64-bit in an attempt to connect with the device and backup or w.e.
Thank you so much in advance and please help me!

Installing ROMs is eassy on XDA. There are a lot of guides! For example, go to the windows mobile ROM development and search for what you want!
Maybe this info will help you:
-a ROM is a file which contains the OS you want to install. To install a ROM, you must connect your phone to USB and use special tools (use a guide to know);
-BUT before flashing, you must have SPL, which is a bootloader unlocker so you can install any ROM you want. And you can also update your radio.
Just basic info, check the guides please!

Thank you for your reply, mate. I swear all I've been doing is checking the guides and the FAQ and I still cannot manage to do the HSPL unlocker, unfortunately. It keeps giving me an error. I'm going to try in a couple of hours and see what I can come up with.
Can you please link me to any ROM that is WM6.5 and working fine? I really don't care what is missing from or added from it as long as it's working.
read the sticky, where all the guides and the rom link there
Thank you guys very much. I read the guides in the threads (BlackSTONEhenge Hyper) and the guide on how to do the HSPL thing and it worked!
Right now I am at 80% of the WM6.5 ROM installation. Hopefully everything turns out great in the end.
By the way, all I needed to backup was the SMS messages and the contacts, and I did that on a site called Bloove. Right now I can see them on bloove.com in my account, but does any body have any idea how to restore them on the HTC device using Bloove?
Thank you very much.
