Fresh 1.1 or Gumbo 1.5c - Hero CDMA General

Which is better and why?

Try them both for a day and find out for yourself.

Rtfm. Seriously

I believe Gbhil already explained this in another thread...

Haven't seen a post like this since Friday....

gbhil said:
Gumbo vs Fresh
Both of us created a ROM that suits our needs, then took some input from the community to make it better. IMO both of us succeeded. They are both 1.5 with Sense, so the differences will be small.
One thing I did with Gumbo was maintain all of MoDaCo's routines that run at boot so that when we did get our kernel source, and Paul/TK whipped up a kernel it would drop right in. Turned out not to be necessary (look inside MCK rom.zip) but I wanted to be sure. Not sure if Flipz and co. did this or not.
At this point, and with 2.1 looming on the horizon, pick whichever ROM (Fresh, TTG, gutted, MCR, Gumbo, etc etc) has a feature set that fits your needs. From a support standpoint, I currently and will continue to recommend Fresh. The support thread here has just about every issue covered.
Think of it this way. If I flash and run Fresh, start pulling apps i don't want and adding apps I do, eventually I'm running Gumbo.

From this thread.

Read this for Gumbo: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630221
Read this for Fresh 1.1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584032
Both developers have information on what's included in the ROMS, read them for the differences. In terms of which is the best, well you'll have to try for yourself. Anytime the question of "which is better, x or y?" comes up you'll always get bias views.

It's really a matter of preference. Fresh and Gumbo both have their ups and downs, it's just your personal preference of what you want, like Gumbo 1.5c Bare is stripped of Sense UI (at least the home screen). I personally like vanilla Android instead of Sense, but again, personal preference.

just try them all. personally i like aosp 1.6, so try that too.
just remember to nandroid backup *EVERY TIME*
after a nandroid backup i like to go to /sdcard/nandroid/*device id*/ and rename all of the backups with what they are. for example, my modaco 2.2 install is set up exactly perfect, so i went and erased all but that backup and named it 'MoDaCo-2.2', so if i ever want to restore it, i know to use that backup and not my 'AOSP-1.6-KERNEL'
just a tip

****NOOB ALERT****
Ok, so I came from the Winmo dark side. I have one very simple question to ask. Why would I want a custom rom here? From what I've gathered it really doesnt change all that much outside of preinstalled apps. Is that it?! I mean with Winmo you were up to your arse in custom winmo 6.5 ROM when it hadnt even launched yet. From what I get here, everything is running 1.5...so whats the point?

There are 1.6 roms (look in my sig) and 2.0, 2.01, and 2.1 roms. The only roms that have camera working are the 1.6 roms. They don't have bluetooth though.

Yeah, that is a problem with the AOSPs. I haven't had that issue. It seems to be geared towards certain people.

You should try some out and find the one that suites you. If you are worried about bricking the phone than don't install a custom ROM on it. I have used several the last week or so and of course I have a favorite ROM as well but the choice is individual.
Actually, I would like to know this too.. Im all new to this world of custom ROMs, and I fid it hard to see precisely what everything does, and what makes it uniqe.. For a newb like me, this is indeed hard.

Give hime some credit....80 plus posts not bad, maybe migrated from another device...
If you don`t want to risk bricking your phone then simple NO FLASH NO RISK....
IF you want all the lastest stuff pick a rom you like the contents of....
Personaly i`m on miri at the mo, Might give NRG a try when its released...
Once you start flashing you`ll get the buzz and you`ll want the latest revision all the time....
Good luck, and there`s allways some one willing to help out,
Next time i`d tag your question onto an allready running post about best roms, Do a search and try not to start a new thread....

I am new to it all as well, but didn't have keept me from trying out 5 different roms and I am trying a few more when they are released as well.
The best roms i have tested is the Topix 1.1 and the XT Pandora 1.0 which I am using now. The thing I like about them both is the are really fast and responsive. The Pandora rom has more software installed from the start which can be both good and bad. The collection of apps in pandora suits me well, the topix had to get a few pieces of software installed.
Admins and many people dont like topics like that because they bring us to endless discussions. Some people are fan of that rom others are fan of another one and start to 'battle' here.
As far as i know there are five or six roms around here. Thats not to much to try.

As everyone else said don't flash if you are scared! if you read well and follow instructions there is no reason you brick your device ...
If you are:
1. Looking for stable and fast 6.5 ROM I reccomend Miri
2. Looking for stable and fast 6.5.x ROM with menubar at the bottom try Maati
so do what the rest of us do and test. I tried 4 ROMs the first day SSPL was released and have now settled on my fav. People who have been flashing for a while do have preferred cookers but as you are new i would try 3 or 4 and try them. The Rom Posts always tell you what is included as extras and what they have removed from the standard apps that come with it to either speed it up or make a little mnore space.
Do some more research if needed but dont come asking what the best ROM is as it all comes down to personal opinion in the end anyway. Take buying a Car yes you might ask people which to buy but in the end you will test drive a few then settle on which is the best for YOU. It's the same with ROMs.
As for worrying about bricking your phone as long as you follow the instructions you should be fine. I have been doing this for a couple of years now and the only issue i have ever had was flashing a Security unlocked Radio because i didnt pay attention to what the instructions said.

For answer what's best now, i would like to say, stock 1.61 is best one.
Try alot of cook Rom so far, but no one still now is stable, all of them cause a system freeze on my phone.
Note that HD2 is very fast and have a high hardware performance allready, so rom cook needed stable at the first.

I agree with you. Make a big round trying all the custom roms , now I'm back to 1.61 stock rom. 1.61 is fast and stable. Gonna wait till the custom roms are stable first before I use them for daily usage.

I agree with this. I have since gone back to 1.48 (+ hotfixes + 1.61 radio, so it's basically 1.61 in German). In particular, WM6.5.3 seems to cause a few problems. I am sure this will get fixed in due time. What the OP was in a way criticizing is the fact that many custom roms have third party apps and themes built in - which is very much a matter of taste. I personally look forward to this:
- Clean 6.5.3(.3) OS
- HTC Sense + other stock apps patched so they do not conflict with 6.5.3.
- No custom themes / icons etc unless they are provided as optional addon.
From my Kaiser i still remember the "UC" method, where cabs were optionally added after flash depending on the what you put in a text file. I think this was the best compromise.
So the newest official rom is the best? And after installing that i have to tweak everything?
aint it possible to delete everything and just install a fresh windows mobile and htc sense, and go on yourself with stuff i want? Or is it not possible/not a good idea?

i dont think the official rom can beat the two latest cooked roms i have used. the topix and pandora are faster and more smooth and still has the htc software as well
i tried em all
i really wish to take some thing from everything
but back to miri
man that rom is super fast
it just needs some folders and some apps thats all
i am on miri's too.. didn't try others but coming from 1.43 stock it was much smoother!!!

Although I like your common sense argument, I wonder if it holds when you realise that a stock rom with a gazillion tweaks, utilities and driver updates added isn't realy a stock rom anymore.
So what's better: to go for a tweaked rom that is tested and shared by a community of users, or to soft-modify a rom yourself?
The only thing I'm a bit worried about is how save my data are on a customed rom. I mean aren't they a bit "hacker" prone? Not that i mistrust the chefs, but the components they use, how trustworthy are they?
EDIT: but then again, also installed utilities, programs etc. could potentialy hijack my personal data.... (so not maybe the worry isn't very realistic)

i am rooted now what

i rooted my evo with no problem and now i dont know what to do next gingerbread, honeycomb, icecream where do i start?
If you want to try AOSP, I'd recommend CM7. But start there...in the development section is all the roms, go take a gander. There are some gingersense rom [sense 3.0] if you like sense.

Start by googling:
You will need Rom Manager, Titanium Backup, Kernel Manager...
Rooted apps Wireless Tether for root users, cache mate, bunch of other stuff...
Cyanogen 7 is an awesome AOSP rom which really helps with battery life and performance and is very slick.
Before you even begin playing with all this stuff remember to do a nandroid backup. You can use Rom Manager to do this.
nandroid = backup security. don't flash something without it.
start with stable ROMs to get the hang of it. I would not head straight for the Kindom sense 3.0 ROM out the gate, for instance, or you'll be like "wtf, did I do something wrong?"
In the world of Evo, there are two kinds of people. AOSP, and Sense. Most people after using different flavors of the two settle into one line they like, and even though they may flash out of line from time to time, they end up back in base camp. so flash at least one stable full featured AOSP and Sense ROM, use each for a couple of days, and develop your taste. That'll help you narrow your choices a bit more in the future.
also, the little search button in the threads is your friend. by the postings I see lately, you would think it doesn't exist. don't be that guy.

Stop being lazy, noobs, and start flashing in Recovery, like you're supposed to.
Or read about how many problems people just on here have reported having after using one of those apps.

I finally rooted about a month or so ago, downloaded Rom Manager and Titanium backup with Busybox and such and made a nandroid backup of my original rooted configuration. Been very useful as I keep coming back to it. Haven't had any issues using the root apps. Tried both CM7 and MIUI and they both have some cool features.

[Q] HD2 Android Rom without sense UI please?

So I absolutely love my HD2 with android on it. So much better than windows! But sense keeps getting in the way of my apps (mostly Wiimote apps) and it is getting really annoying...Is there a way around that? Or more to the point, does anyone know of a good rom that is android without sense that I can run?
cm7 based builds give you a good performance. you can also try miui builds they are fast too.

What problem are you having? (former serial ROM flasher!!!!)
Are you using HD2 Toolkit, makes life a lot simpler for flashing ROMS etc
if you ask 10 people here what rom they like your bound to get 20 different responces. your best bet is to try each rom intill you find a rom you like and stick with it. i have 2 or 3 roms i like best and keep them on my sd so when i feel i need to change i just flash 1 real quick.
if you take a look at this web page there is a list of all the android roms listed here on XDA. its much easier to look through then the pages here & also it tells you if it has sence or not, when it was updated, if its a nand or sd version, when it was added as well as some other useful information. i would check it out and hopefully you can find a rom you like that works for you.
Go try to "TyphooN CyanogenMod 7".
I think you will like it if you don't like sense roms.
Which CM rom is the closest to normal CM7 without any themes or graphical changes? Would it be Tytung's NexusHD2?

Do NOT flash your phone with 3rd party ROMs

Do NOT flash your hero phone with 3rd party ROMs unless necessary. I have played with many kinds of ROMs for 1 year. Most of them are downright laggy, unstable, or battery-draining although you could have some new features. These Roms are not fully tested. Some of them even contain spyware... You normally need to wipe your phone for most 3rd party ROM updates and that means you need to re-configure your phone again and again.. Now, I got my stock ROM back after making a Gold-card and I'm very satisfied with my HTC stock ROM. This is a fast, stable, power-saving and fully-tested ROM. Upgrade is very smooth and not painful.
I would suggest you to flash your phone by RUU and then root it by some tools, e.g. http://www.unlockroot.com/. But, please keep an eye on the install procedure. Do not install unnecessary apps unless you want.
The above is only my personal experience. Hope it helps.

My used ROMs include Crons, CM, Villian and some others that I can't remember. At present, I don't think there is any spyware in Crons, CM, Villian. Crons, CM, Villian are generally recognised as good 3rd pary ROMs. However, I don't think any of them is more stable or faster than stock ROMs.
I found some spywares installed as system apps in some Chinese ROMs disributed from hiapk.com and bbs.anzhi.com.. These are individual-maintained ROMs.
To my understanding, if an app requires extra permissions than what it actually needs, then that could be a spyware.
I'm not a professional mobile device developer. What I need is a rooted ROM that is bugless, does it job well and therefore suitable for everyday use.

@gnubot, which stock ROM did u flashed?
Now I use a repack of the oficial OTA 2.1-update1,flashed it and i get some Force Close errors(like com.htc.bgp etc).
I tried VillainROM v12 and v13 and i was stuck on the load-screen (i think it is the Sense app that is stuck on).
I saw that @dastin1015 uploaded his Zero Hero Sense 3.5 ROM, looks nice and I would like to try it, but I have some doubts about some bugs. Also, i searched the forum, and couldn't find any info on how to downgrade to 2.1 (if something goes wrong). I can't post a question under the Developer forum (as a new forum user).

I'm a custom rom addict, rarely do I have a rom for more than 2 months before looking for something which more/better features. Sure there's some laggy roms out there, most of which are still in beta so you can't expect them to be "perfect" Roms. That said, there's plenty of excellent roms being worked on by some very clever and creative people, that go above and beyond the features stock roms offer. The fact is that some Sense lovers are tired of laggy new sense ports I guess
Therefore, a stock android ROM is not a choice.
So, in a way, I must admit that gnubot is right.
But we can't deny that the work that JieeHD, dastin1015, elelinux and other devs did is pretty awesome!
And to finish, I don't really remember how many months HTC devs took to make a correct release of the new Sense...

That is SO correct!!
I've tried non-Sense roms, they're great and fast and stable and good-looking, but not for me... i don't feel comfortable with them.
I even have got back to generic 1.5. So getting back to stock is not a solution.
At this moment, i have Wildheroc RoseV5, it's sense and it's GB.
I'm waiting for the Zero Hero Sense 3.5 to be "stable" and i'll flash it
I just had to post in this thread because of the title. It's pretty ridiculous that you'd create a topic on this site as bline007 said and not somewhere else. Especially using that topic title? You didn't really expect that anyone would agree with you I hope. For your sake I can only assume you meant to say "Be careful I've found some 3rd party roms with spyware" or the like.
P.S. I apologize for the flameish response but I feel a lot of patronage for this site and it's members because of the work massive amount of work and personal time they have spent to make my 'legacy' phone go out of it's comfort zone just to bring us features, options and a longevity we never expected from this phone. So please don't taint the hard work of the developers by making posts with titles as such.

Which ICS ROM is better?

Is the official leaked ICS ROM better then Thors current ICS ROM? Because I am running Thor's currently, and was wondering if its worth to update to the official leaked ICS ROM. I don't care much about features and stuff, all I need is something that functions good, and how its supposed to run.
I'm running FLEXREAPER and its been amazing so far. I also came from running Thor's rom, but I'm extremely happy with what civato has accomplished so far.
Depends on which of the brocken versions you want to use. None have full function. Some are more buggy then others. None use proper resolution, nor the new Tegra 2 optimizations, nor the addtional HDMI fuctions.
Probably best to wait for the upcoming offcial build, which will include all the optimizaitions, resoultion changes, dual layer dashboard, Acer wheel, then root it and go from there.
It depends on your level of technical ability.
I would recommend:
Reading through the links below
Install RA via Acer Recovery Installer (use custom image option)
Flash Stock, then flash CWM version via RA Recovery (all in one step, losing recovery)
Install unlocked bootloader+custom recovery
Advantages:
Keep root
Unlock bootloader
Keep recovery
Remount /system rw (requires terminal app)
Remove bloat manually
Camera works
No sleep of death
Basically stock
I'm really pleased with my A500 right now, so this is what I'm running.

How do you measure better?
I am running flexrom and it is smooth. You can always just make a nandroid and see how the other builds run. I haven't run Thors rom, so I can't give you a comparison.

Is it necessary to be that aggressive to someone who is clearly an end-user? Why not state that "all of the roms released here benefited from an open collaborative environment from developers. This is why things like the GPL are important, because everyone can benefit by sharing knowledge that results in a quick resolution to issues that arise."
There is no need to attack people like a zealot

This sounds like a troll post.
None use proper resolution? Is that a joke?
None have full function?
Flexreaper R4 is running well for me. No complaints. Seems just as functional as Honeycomb to me since full root and /system write permissions.
ATM the ROMs based on the Acer leak are by far the best, as they have practically everything working (contraty to what some other poster thinks). There are some small omissions (like face unlock) and probably a few bugs that didn't yet show up, but other than that they are surprisingly fast and stable (I'm using FLEXREAPER R4, too).
As to violating GPL... well, in the end probably both do, but in thors case it's a good bit worse as he has a choice while vache (and those building on his leak) haven't.
Came from Thor's as well. I then went to Lightspeed, which ran well but is really stripped down. If you want a pretty bare-bones ROM, this is good for that. I am now on Taboonay, which has seemed every bit as fast and smooth, yet also includes wallpapers, extra widgets, etc. I haven't tried Flexreaper so I can't speak of that one. Both I have tried were smoother than Thor's IMO.

Another extremely helpful post!
Other than Face unlock and the Acer ring, the leak is a full version. (vache has the Acer ring in his Rom. Not sure if they have face unlock working yet.)
My advice to anyone who is curious, do a backup and try it for yourself. If you don't like it restore your backup.
I'm running Lightspeed Beta5 now and so far it's running great. As mentioned before it is pretty barebones but if that's your preference it works well.
If you want extra Acer system apps , go here and pick the "You want the extra Acer system apps" , you can use them on all the ICS roms that are based on the Leaked rom.
Try them and USE YOUR Own Judgement.is best .
THere is only one real piece of advice that can be giving to Op..
You do know how to flash a rom. You do know how to read a thread.. My best Sis to read the User post in each rom Thread. (Something i have done). Then make a Decision based on your Opinion of what you have read. And flash the rom that best suits you. If you do not like that flash another. Just remeber to do a nand backup between each and you can try them all .Try them until you are satisfied with the rom you choose.
THE ANSWER IS There is no answer. Do Not Try to make it a Competition between the roms. They are all great.. ALL OF THE Development in the roms have been done by people taking time out of there life to make them available for all.. Respect that. Follow the flashing INstructions . be careful and have fun..
if you want the BEST User experience. With the least bugs. go back to 3.2.1 Fully stock..
thanks for listening to my two Pennies. oh well maybe 3 or 4..
Now im Going to take a Bath.
Can I update to the stock ICS ROM straight from Thors ICS? Like put the update.zip into the SD card, and press power and volume up for it to automatically update? Or that won't work?

Yes it works, but I assume you have cwm recovery installed so if you don't want to loose cwm, don't flash Acer's stock update.zip. I suggest Lightspeed ICS over thors ics. At least it worked fine for me. Clear cache & dalvik before. Don't forget to backup just in case.
