I am curious to know how technically the OTA work. Is the notification/file sent through the Carrier cell phone connection, data connection, wifi ?!?!?!?!
And speeking of OTA, i've not yet received my update notification.

Not sure if i am right but by the looks of your sig your N1 is unlocked/rooted. I do not believe you will get the OTA at all without updating it yourself. Think it has to do with you having a custom rom. Don't quote me on it but thats what i think. you can always just update to it yourself as well. Search the forum. There are alot of posts on how to do it and where to download the file. Remember i am only going off what info i see from your sig.
To also answer your question of how the OTA is given to you. You will get a notification of it and the option to download and install the file or wait and do it later. It is all done over a data connection.

Just one correction... the OTA update downloads automatically, and I'm guessing it's temporarily stored on an internal partition on the phone. When you see the notification, it's already downloaded and when you choose to install, the phone immediately reboots and installs the update.
OK, thanks for the info.
Yes I am already rooted and with a custom ROM so I really do not care about the update. I was just curious to see how the process works. You're saying that the OTA predownloads the file to your phone , but how, over the Cell phone carrier data channel ?!?!? And what if I do NOT have a data subscription ?

You have a point !!! I surely have a data plan, although on edge (only att 3g frequency here ) . All I need know is my cyanogen OTI (over the internet) new ROM. ......
if you're rooted, you will get the notifcation, but it'll fail on the update.
There's already versions of the update for rooted phones on here, and probably custom roms including it anyway.

+1, want to know this too... also what is the OTA fixing? just the SD card issues? is this something that can be fixed w/o the OTA?
can some please tell me? i just wanna know if im better off waiting without the update.
Really? 180 views and nothing? Surely SOMEONE can tell us the answer to this question.
I read in some of the other threads not to.
Do. Nobody is replying because it is old news. Search forums.
People that did the update had fewer errors then the ones pre update.
Same as you I'm still waiting for a more solid 2.2, not yet rooted or update OTA. For me there is no urgent need to OTA since I've replace the Stock SD Card and haven't experience anymore problem (Evo is nice and smooth). I'm just gonna play it safe and hold off on OTA until I rooted my phone most likely with Toast method (THANK YOU VERY MUCH TOAST!!!).
the ota does more than just fix the sdcard issue, it reportedly locks down internet sharing/tethering as well and no idea what else. if you apply the update, you will need to sign up for sprint's $29 hotspot service or root your phone with unrevoked and install the wifi tether app...
other than that, enjoy the phone
I haven't applied the OTA yet and my Evo has been flawless so far. Normally I'm a rabid upgrader of anything and everything but I don't see any reason to do so now and there are some possible downsides.

A new OTA update was released yesterday. My phone is already rooted with the unrevoked method. I updated while I was drunk btw. But the OTA didn't mess with my wireless tethering...I'm still tethering away, freely!
just for my own education. once you update, can the simple unrEVOked method still be used?

I have been reading about UMA and Orange Signal Boost. There was nothing in my SGS2 to suggest it had that facility so I have been ringing Orange UK all weekend. Every CS person I spoke to said the SGS2 was on their UMA-capable list so it should have it.
They all scratched their heads a lot and promised to ring back. They said the SGS2 should "just work" as soon as you connect it to a wifi network and lose the mobile signal. I knew that was wrong.
Eventually this evening one of the reps phoned me back and said he had been on to Samsung themselves and admitted the SGS2 is capable but does not yet have the feature! It will be enabled in a firmware upgrade some time in the future. When? I asked." Oh, we don't know that, you'll just have to wait until it is ready and then Orange will need to test it."
So I resigned myself to a long wait. Anyway, I just connected my phone to Kies and lo and behold there is an update-
i9100BVKG2-BVKG3-GINGERBREAD.BVKG3
This is NOT 2.3.4 but is listed as 2.3.3
And guess what? There is an app called "Signal Boost" and it connects to Orange's network via your own broadband router when you have a poor network signal. There is a green house icon in the status bar when it's connected.
Way to go Orange, but you ought to tell your CS reps!
Thanks man! I've been waiting for this, but unfortunately I'm not on a stock device any more, so Kies won't help me.
Any chance you could upload the signal boost app for us? I'm guessing it will be in /system/apps.
Thanks
Just wondering if some enterprising dev could extract this for T-mobile customers too ;-)

Yes I could but from what I've read there is more than just the app as it needs kernel support as well.
I suggest you try SpoofFw from the market to help with that Kies problem.

No worries. Just beware though, when I reverted to original Orange FW from the KG? ones I always had many FCs and always ended up doing a full wipe.
I flashed this kernel:
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG3-v4.1-CWM4
over the top and signal boost still works so I guess it might not need kernel support after all. The firmware is up now http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14502681&postcount=1 so any devs can take the rom to pieces and find all the necessary files.
For what it's worth, I got my SGS2 yesterday, and it already had this update on it, and the Signal Boost app. Wasn't aware such a thing existed before, though as I get pretty poor reception here, it's useful!
Still running stock firmware, though I have rooted it already - will I be able to receive future updates through Kies even though it's rooted, and will I lose that root if I update?
Can someone please post the apk?
This would be very helpful for me too. Can someone post the .apk?
Pretty...Please..
Me too - Orange network in the UK here.
Thanks!
If you're in the UK and on Orange, just plug your phone into your PC and run Kies.

But what if you are on a custom ROM and would like to stay on a custom ROM? I think that's why people are asking from the APK so they can use it on other ROM's on the Orange UK network?

You'll need to flash back to a stock firmware, get the update and then flash back to your custom firmware again.
There isn't an obvious candidate for this app on the filesystem from what I can see, but I did find one called WiFi-Calling.apk. See attached. Hopefully it's the one...
Just installed the wifi-calling.apk on my custom ROM and it installs and is called Signal Boost. however it does force close which means I guess there are other required elements in the Kernel?
To clarify, if I flash back to stock and then update to the latest Orange ROM with Signal Boost, then back to my custom ROM will I still have signal boost, or will it be wiped by re-installing my Custom ROM?
It's not showing up in my kies. bah

I have auto-updating turned OFF and software scheduling updates OFF, and then now, I just connected to my Wifi connection and my phone started to download a 350MB software update bundle even though every AUTO Checking of Software Updates are TURNED OFF. I dont know why its still downloading updates when I have all of these disabled to automatically check for updates.
Please see print screens.
I DO NOT want ANY software updates to be downloaded especially I dont even know what updates they are.
Please help me on this. I want this to be disabled.
Just sick of this!!!!! I mean really....
Now, I do not really know what this 300MB update bundle was, but it wasnt the Android 4.3 update as I just checked.
I have no clue whatsoever on what updates were installed.
How can I check what updates were installed?
Thanks

Can you post screenshots of this please on where I can find this in order to disable this?
I want to disable auto-updates because Im afraid it might "break" things.
Thanks, I would appreciate some print screens.
Will Android version 4.3 be downloaded automatically as well?
Now that, I will not mind if 4.3 would be installed automatically since I heard that should fix the "lag" issue on the screen on most S4 phones.

Since your phone is factory stock an update wont break things.
Samsung updates are not to be feared.
And the updates. Dont waste space... as the software gets refines you get more.
I now have 9.1 gigs when I use to have 8giga when I just got the phone
Samsung is optimizing the software and it is getting slimmer.
Updates do not waste space.
So relax... it sounds like this is your first Samsung flagship.

You will get 4.3 automatically if you leave the software update feature on.
Samsung update services are decent.
For example the Samsung Galaxy S2 was updated to 4.1.2 via OTA even tho it is considered an old phone from the Gingerbread 2.3.4 - 2.3.6 era. (FEB 2011)

Yes.
But my advice... leave auto update on.
If you tap the check for updates button you may see an update but it wont download because the update server space is full.
Your fear is understood but unnecessary.
Its best to let it download by itself over wifi.
When it is done it will ask you if you want to update... it will not reboot your phone without you knowing.... nor will it install new software without you knowing.

Sorry, but one more last question. I tend to turn off my WiFi on my S4 most of the time even when I am at home.

Will that be OK for the updates?

3G strains the battery much more than wifi bro, leave wifi on if you can for better battery life. OTA`s can be downloaded on 3G but wifi is cheaper and faster. 4.3 isn`t out yet, will take another 2-3 months for the official one, leaks may come earlier.

As the user above says.
Leave wifi on for better battery life when you are at home.
If you turn off wifi and do not want the phone connected to the internet make sure you turn off mobile data as well.
With your internet service off: The update will just take longer. I am not sure the updater service downloads the data in pieces as a torrent client or download manager would do.
So its best to leave it on... go to sleep and wake up to see the notification that the update has been downloaded and ready for installation.

If you have problems after update, you can make factory reset, which will erase all personal data from the phone and fix the errors, keeping you with the lastest firmware. Now you can go to application manager/all apps and find SoftwareUpdate. Disable it and I think, you wont be able to update before enabling it again. No root needed to do this.

No you can't roll back as you would on a PC from the phone itself.
What you will have to do is download the version of firmware you want and like and use a PC based software called ODIN to re-flash the phone.
If you do this you can keep your old settings (it wont wipe your personal data) and "roll back" to a version you preffer.
However updates seldom if ever break things in my region. I do not know about other regions.
For example: I keep my S4 STOCK STOCK STOCK so I have never had the need to roll back any update.. and nothing so far has broken in the 4 updates I have received over wifi.
Other people may have other experiences, possibly bad ones with apps crashing or the phone being slow.
So what they normally do in such a negative case is a Factory reset.
A factory reset will have the new firmware but it removes all your settings and downloaded apps and presents the phone as if it just came from the factory.
Your settings and apps will then be reloaded once you log into Google and / or your Samsung account.
So relatively speaking it is not a major hassle.

Good luck, my friend. Our variation seems to be the worst one for support. What a surprise........lol

Yeah, same goes for the AT&T version (v520), no root, no twrp, not even barely any discussions.. Smh, if AT&T didn't give it to me for free i'd probably have just gotten a Nexus lol.. At least you can have fun with those..
I was able to get adoptable storage with the update now with a few adb commands
What version is this Nougat? (letter letter letter number number letter, can also be known as build number, not 7.0 - version of Nougat is obvious enough)
I plan on building AOSP for this, but I would REALLY prefer to match the exact version.
And I can't just run the update on my tablet, it's rooted and unlocked and I don't think I know the procedure to relock it.
Never mind, it said 7.0.0-r1.

Just an FYI you don't need to relock your tablet to update. Just follow this guide :

I am pretty sure AT&T just released the Android 7 update. Mine is still downloading so i am not really sure if it is indeed Android 7 but it's a 1.2GB update. I was going to post a new thread to let everyone know who has the AT&T version but i can't as i am a new user
Edit- Yup. Mine is now running Android 7.0 with a December 1st security patch

Hmm, weird cuz mine keeps saying "your device is up to date" and it was last updated on January 10th.. But I'm still on 6.0.1..
EDIT: Also wanna add, I downloaded LG Bridge via a recommendation from another site that stated that was the only way the new update would be accepted, and that didn't work either.. When i click "Software Update" it says, "Cannot check the software version, Try again.", so I guess I'm s.o.l. for now..
I deactivated from AT&T when I switched to Verizon last month, but I still use it on WiFi and it works fine so I'm not sure why it's not working..

That is really strange. My guess would be is it hasn't been pushed out to every device yet. I happen to have checked for updates on the day AT&T pushed it out. Their website wasn't even updated yet when i got it. I wouldn't think deactivating it would cause it to lose the ability to update but i am kind of new to android so i am not 100% sure. I would just keep checking for updates or maybe contact AT&T and see if they could give you an answer. They do have a section in the Device Support to display information about software updates. I tried attaching a link to it but i can't as i have less than 10 posts. You can search on google AT&T software updates and it should be the top link. You'll then enter your device and scroll down to software updates. They do have a Troubleshoot and Resolve software updates page you could check out
Sweet. My fido v522 just completed its Nougat update. No more sluggish keyboard......for now. Lol

Thanks, it actually worked. The only difficulty I had was locating the SD card number. In the video the dude first says type sm lists-disk, however, when you actually look at the video later, he typed sm list-disks. That made all the difference.

Your Welcome ^_^
I notice Wi-Fi issues on my Fido V522 after the nougat update. It would get horrible wifi speeds with a AC 4X4 (1900) network and frequent network drops compared to Marshmallow.
