try using microsoft my phone?

Install pimbackup on your phone or just run it as an application (.exe)
You can find it everywhere on the internet
After that start the program and select backup....
Give the backup a location (I'm always using storage card)
After that just do your thing, flash rom or manila as you suggested.
Now start PPCpimbackup and "restore" search on sd card your backup and finished. That's all.
Good Luck

pim backup is ok, but not satisfing... I encounter a strange order of threaded sms in titanium edition.
with SPB backup.... it worked fine.
ok, it is a commercial product, so you may investigate further, but I did the trick for me.
beside: it may not be the greatest idea to import mass of sms into manilla 2.5.

I've tried PimBackup and Sprite Backup.
Both backup and restore fine the SMSs, but PIM when restoring, when using the HTC Messaging client, don't put the pictures of the contacts in convertation mode. With Sprite Backup I have no issues...

MOD EDIT - Moved to general discussion

Thankyou for your replies I intend to flash my phone tonight - I have flashed my phone many times, It will be the first time using manila 2.5

Lost my Inbox and SMS. please help!

I'm not sure exactly how or when this happened... but I recently did a hard reset and a restore, I cannot seem to go to my inbox or even send sms from my contacts list.
The icon is still on the start menu but it does nothing.
any ideas?
thanks
Dino
Are you using sprite backup?
Try to upgrade the backup software.
i just use the backup utility of active sync.
i'll look into sprite backup thanks.
i ended up hard resetting and just reinstalling from scratch.
too about an hour and a half to reconficgure and resetup my phone.
You can solve this issue..
Just restore your old backup, install Sprite Backup 3 (make sure its not older than version 3) and backup your device using Sprite Backup.
Now, hard reset your device & install Sprite backup, then restore ONLY the SMS messages.
It shall work like a charm 8)
It happened the same to me but after making a backup. I just lost the access to my inbox and tried to send an SMS in the contact itself but noting. Not even receive them. Anyone can help so i cant have to install averything over again. My backup was just perfect ..but then this happened after restoring
Never use Sprite Backup earlier than version 3
I used the XBackup that comes in windows...
Imagination, what backup software you've used to make the backup ?
This case happens when you restore a backup, so did you make a restore?
Yes it hapened after i made a restore. I used Xbackup (the app thats already intaled in windows). I used it for the backup and for the restore. I made restores before and this doesn't happened. But this time i lost the inbox and sms.
aha, seems your SMS reception is dead now!
It happened to me once, when I did a restore. I was forced to hard reset my device
but before the reset, I backed up the entire device using sprite backup, and then I did a hard reset, installed Sprite Backup 3, then restored ONLY the SMS databases. It worked!
But for you, you are not willing to re-install your applications!
I saw a program that fixes this problem. It clears the SMS databases.
after that, you can restore only the SMS part of the backup.
I guess its named SMS CLEAR...
If I find it, I'll send it to you, dude
Ok thanks. I will try to find it. Hope it works. I will try sprite backup too. thanks
Your most welcome, dude
here I found it, its name CleanMail !
It fixes all the database corruptions in your SMS & wipe all emails & SMS messages, so be sure you have backup of all these databases.
you can get it from here:

The only improvment that made was appearing in inbox You have a new SMS message, but no luck trying to open. After that i reeintaled the backup and used the app again but still no luck. I have to make an hard reset in the week end and reeinstall all over again and i will use a third party software for backing up. Thanks for the help
Oh am sorry to hear that
Well, its better to do a hard reset, since it seems that SMS databases are hardly damaged!
I advice you to install Sprite Backup 3.. its the best backup software ever!
I wish it will work out smoothly with you.
Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeerz
Solution for missing Inbox SMS Folder (and service)
Hello! I managed a solution to recover the the missing Inbox SMS Folder (and service) from a recovery by ActiveSync. The problem is that when we restore there is an active program that uses that service and therefore it cannot be restored. In my last try I unistalled Webis Mail, unchecked everything in "Today" and made a soft reset. Don't run the Outlook in the PC, if you use Jeyo Mobile Extender because this program acesses the SMS folder in the PDA. Do a restore, and when it finishes it'a all OK again. I was already preparing myself to do a Hard Reset to use SMS again! By the way what's the best ROM for Window 2003SE ? Thanks.

Backup Messages (SMS, MMS) before upgrade ROM?

Can someone please help me..
I want to upgrade to the new ROM 1.11 but I need to backup all of my messages..
I am not sure if using xBackup to backup before upgrading the new ROM then use xBackup to restore is ok or not.. (will this screw up my PPC? because of the old files that might overwrite the new ROM files)
or is there any other way to backup the messages then restore after the upgrade is completed?
Thanks in advance.
use Jeyo Mobile Compagnion work great for this
Sprite Backup also backs up messages and call logs. You'll just have to use the advanced method and see to that you only check those things when you restore. It's said that you cannot restore the full backup afterwards.

Most of the Data (contacts, appointments, email) should be "backed" in your Outlook ...
And you should google for SPB Backup.
Thanks saminegm.
I have SPB backup now. Is it 100% safe to use. Does it preserve the infornmation ... anybody have comments ?
P.S. I was wondering whether it can backup settings like Data Connectivity, GPRS & MMS settings, Messenger e.t.c.
what you want is PIM Backup
SPB Backup backs up the entire PDA, i use it on my Alpine and backup to an SD card, from a hard reset i can then restore the Alpine to exactly the way it was before the reset.
Sprite Backup claims to work after a ROM upgrade but I have never tried that feature.
Thanks alot for Your answers.

SPB backup whole device and cna restore whole device on the SAME ROM. Is is not advisable to restore a full backup made over a different rom. So, you can use SPB but doing a customized backup of just your pim data or you can use PIM Backup, or just use outlook + activesync to do the same.
I agree that PIM Backup 2.5 is the best solution, except for notes that you can backup manually coping files on you sd card.
Ciao

Q: Backup/restore of email post ROM upgrade

I was wondering if there's any way to restore email post a ROM upgrade, especially MMS/SMS messages.
I'm trying to backup all my MMS images prior to an upgrade and was hoping there was an easy way to backup/restore them.
I'm currently using Sprite Backup but I doubt I could restore the message database (pim.db ?) from backup to a newly installed ROM.
Any tips appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

On my 8525 I had no problems to backup my PIM data (contacts, calender, emails, sms, mms) via SPB BACKUP on WM5 and restore then after upgrading to WM6. Just make sure that you make either a backup of PIM data only or select RESTORE PIM DATA ONLY in case you made a full backup! If you try to restore the whole WM5 backup on a WM6 it will most likely fail because system files will get overwritten and some WM6 REGISTRY entries will get replaced with older WM5 ones.
Here is the best solution if you want to try:
On your WM5 device make a full backup with SPB BACKUP, then flash your device with WM6. Run the SPB BACKUP file you've created before and select PIM ONLY for restore.
If it fails you always can flash back to WM5 and reload the whole backup! But I am 100% sure it will work! I made it several times from WM5 8525 ENGLISH ROM to a WM6 O2 GERMANY ROM (which proofed to me that language does not matter in that case! )
just a little search

search more you'll find more.
Fabulous - thankyou!

Except that MMS backups aren't supported

Backup?

Hi, everyone. I am tired of installing all the stuff to the phone every time i hard reset it. Is there a program that does a full backup? I want to hard reset it, run the backup program and have all the things working. Regardless if they are installed on the phone or on he memory stick.
Is spb backup well suited for the job. Remember i want everything to work.
Hi
What about the SPB backup ?
It cost a little, but it deserve it .
i prefer sprite backup
Spb backup is what I use...
It creates an executable backup file.
So after you hard reset, just run the backup. Nothing to re-install!
I always make a backup before I install any new apps!!
Stuart
Does Spb backup backs up messages and contacts?
or does it only backs up programs?
Spb will backup everything from contact, sms.... to anything/everything on your storage card!

That one seems also great and profi.
i also recommend spb back-up
I think Resco Backup is the most complete backup / restore software, but as it's a new challenger in Windows Mobile, they still have some small issues. For me everything works except the SMS / MMS restore, which I backup / restore temporary with PIM Backup 4.8 (which is a freeware).
I have made a backup with SPB from R1 Generic_UK ROM and I'm trying to use the backup file for the R2 Generic_UK ROM.
After restoring I got the error message:
"MainWnd.cpp 198
Unable connect to server"
Any solution?
I had problems with spb backup as well. mine did install, but i ended up with flickering screen and as soon as I clicked on settings the phone froze, so i had to take the battery out. I have been reinstalling and resetting everything for the past 4 hours.
You need to remember, If you are updating your rom...
This is essentially putting an new version of the OS your Xperia!!
So the Only items you want to restore is Databases(contacts, datebook, sms...etc) and Data(my docs area)
You do not want to restore system files or registry!!!
This will conflict with the new ROM!!!
So You after you restore only the Data.... You need to re-install apps!!!
hth,
Stuart
btw, when you run your current SPB Backup file. It will give you the option of a full retore or choosing what you want to re-Install (selective restore)....stu
I recommend SPB Backup. I use it to restore my phone about 3 times and it works great.
Features I like:
- Very fast backup and restore!
- Backups *everything*, stand-alone restorer.
- Can compress the backup.
- Can choose what to backup/restore.
- And the best thing: SPB Backup Sync! It's basically an application like the Active Sync program on your PC. You can configure it to make backups everytime you sync and copy them to your PC automatically. Works great.
Myself had trouble with it, and I did try the Pim backup, small software perhaps do not backup all the programs, but, back-up, contacts and differents folders

I test drove a few of the backup programs out there a while back and posted my fave two here: http://xperiancer.blogspot.com/2009/01/data-backup-be-prepared.html
I recently was notified of HTC Backup utility - a free utility, as well as the new version of Resco Backup which is supposedly better than SPB Backup. I will be checking them out in the next day or so and posting more at the blog.
What about a restore after a firmware update. Will it work?

I prefer to just backup pim.vol, cemail.vol, the weather database and a few other files. Then just let the new ROM run and install everything I want and put the backup files in play. It's fast and automatic. No fuss and it's all built in.
sprite backup does the same as spb backup,it has all the same features but i found it does not give me half as many errors as spb
