I just got a mytouch 2 days ago brand new from tmobile and I want to root it using the one click root method. Problem is when i download the sappimg.nbh file and try to downgrade from 1.6 (donut) to 1.5(cupcake) i get an error message "main version older update failed!". i did a little research and found out that the newer mytouch 3g's that have 1.6 (donut) out the box have been patched so you cant downgrade. I also read that the only way to root the mytouch now is to use a method called the gold card method. Can anyone explain this method because it seems really complicated. Or does anyone know of an easier way to downgrade to 1.5 or to root mytouch 3g.
This tells you how to flash 1.6, not downgrade;
Start here:
To make a goldcard (which is also covered in the next thread): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4289899&postcount=1
Then with a good goldcad; how to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4314039
My friend used these steps with his new My touch 3G and it worked great.

k so i have a tmobile mytouch wen i first got it the slapsh screen would be the yellow mytouch screen now that i have it rooted its a vodafone wen in that screen were u hold down camera and power button it shows 32bpvt board but i am only able to flash 32a roms with out problem im so confused when i found a us tmobile sappimg.img i try to flash it but i get error message saying that i cant downgrde the image file...any help with thi problem ???
did you use the goldcard method? I am thinking you did since you have the Vodafone splash now. That can be easily fixed by just flashing the mytouch splash over it. As for only 32A roms working well, when you do root using the goldcard method, you basically end up with a 32A, minus the ram. You fix that by flashing over the 32B radio and recovery. That is more than likely the problem. As for downgrading, maybe you got a bad sappimg.nbh download?
so are u saying that i should flash 2.22.19.26Iradio and which recovery should i use?
Yes, that is what I did. Amon_RA 1.5.1G is what I have right now.
Just to make sure though, which radio do you currently have right now?
Just Unrooted
I just unrooted my MyTouch and I wanted to know how I update everything to the most recent version, like the market and google maps...
the sappimg.nbh file that I have is from the older version...
Thank You!!!
i was reading instructions on how to root but i belive its more difficult to root a 32b version. can someone show me the easiest way to root a 32b mytouch?
thank you so much.
Check out the Cyanogen wiki for instructions to flash his rom on your Mytouch, the instructions are simple. Yes, you also get root access.
when i attempt to flash to the sappimg i get an error saying "Main version is older"
and in the cyan wiki it says the goldcard method does not work.
im having the same problem...i never had these many problems rooting a phone . I have a g1 that i rotted flawlessly. not only did i hear the gold card method doesn't work but it also is very complicated. Im stuck! I really wish the one click root method work for the 1.6
Pvt 32b
hboot 1.33.0007 sapp3000

when i had my g1 rooting was easy, this is a nightmare.
I think you have to downgrade to 1.5 to root. That's what I did. Good luck!
Also as mentioned before, check out the cyanogenmod wiki. It gives a very detailed instructions list to help you out.
downgrading to 1.5 is the problem we CANT!!!!

ARE WE THE ONLY TWO THAT GET THIS?!!!?
I think the only way is either suck it up and use the goldcard method or wait until flashrec updates the apk. we're screwed!
I had this message when I rooted my 32b device yesterday so I followed the gold card option and everything worked without a hitch.
I was told it didnt work in Windows 7 but it worked fine on my xp pc.
Happy to help if you have questions.
Cheers
Dave
Guess its a 32B problem, im able to downgrade to 1.5 but them im getting an error when im trying to use Flash Recover to back up my files.

this video helped me root it by downgrading. If this doesn't work, I don't know..

Are you following this steps form the cyanogen wiki?
h t t p ://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
I had the problem with flash recovery when I was running it under 1.6. Once I downgraded back to 1.5, it works fine without a hitch. Flashrec version: flashrec-20090815.apk.
same error message
I'm getting the same error message. I have previously rooted around 10 mytouch phones without problems, but using the same procedure now is giving me that error. It looks like the Hboot software has been updated on any newer phones and is having an issue with updating (or backdating, I suppose) to 1.5
If anyone has a work around I would love to know it.
The old version of Hboot that used to work is HBOOT-1.33.0006
The new version, which is not working, is HBOOT-1.33.0007
Anyone know of a way to backdate the HBOOT software?
WTF....
This phone is impossible to root (over acting, but pissed off) I've tried everything I've read online...I was able to build a goldcard from unlockr's web page, and when installing the sappimg file the damn phone still doesn't want to give up the 1.6....there has got to be something or someone out there that has encountered this bullchip and fixed it
I have a 32B mytouch. did you try unrooting first, before rooting? Just a thought bc i had to do it before rooting, and i had never rooted my phone before that.
do i have root???
HBoot - 1.33.0006 (SAPP 30000)
CPLD - 10
Radio - 2.22.19.261
As i search the forum, i realized that i have "perfected SPL"...that would require me to go through "goldcard" method. I tried and it was so complicated for me...
And then i saw this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633895 which said you should follow cyanogen's method on this site http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod.
so i follow the steps and everything worked out and now i have cyanogens rom running on my MT3G. .... now my question is ....do i have root??...
can i flash other people's roms assuming i have all the right radio and SPL...
when i try to install Amon_RA's recovery img through Terminal Emulator, after i type $su and hit enter....nothing happens....it does not ask me for su permission????.....
Please Help....If i dont have root how was i able to flash cyanogens rom??
do i need to do the goldcard method....or am i set...with root.??
I do realise that this forum, and others, is full with questions like the one I am about to ask, but it is the confusion that I've gotten by reading all these threads that I am asking it here. Many threads contradict each other, or are only dealing with the MyTouch from T-Mobile. Maybe the MyTouch and Magic are to be treated similarly, but I am not sure whether that's possible or not.
Alright: is it possible to get some nice and clean advice on the following?
What I have: a HTC Magic 32B by Vodafone NL, firmware 1.6
What I would like: to root my phone
Why: to be able to install Cyanogen's Eclair-based ROM v5.0.7
My phone has the perfected 1.33.0007 SPL.
How to start?
Look at cyanogenmod's wiki. It is very helpful.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
Thank you. I will have a look at it!
Alright, so far it is not working for my 1.6 Vodafone NL HTC Magic 32B.
What I did up till now is the following:
1) I went to the website mentioned earlier in this thread.
2) Tried applying the COC10 build of Cupcake from SAPPIMG.nbh
3) Got the error saying 'Main version is older' and made a goldcard of my sd card
4) After making the goldcard I went to the step 'Revert to 32B Radio and Rom'
5) Whilst typing the fastboot codes in this step I got the error 'Remote: not allow'
That's where I am right now.
I believe that the 'Remote: not allow' error is due to the fact that I have got the 1.33.0007 perfected spl.
Don't know what to do right now.
Yes, it finally worked!
After my last post I decided to install this sappimg.zip which included some Android 1.5 version. This also changed my 1.33.0007 spl into another spl (not perfected anymore, which was good).
I was now able to get back to the original upgrading steps mentioned in the link earlier in this thread. I did not get the error "Main version is older" anymore.
I went on with the upgrading steps, and downloaded CM's 5.0.8 ROM, which was to be downloaded on another website including steps to install it.
I flashed my phone through abd to RA's recovery mode --> "it is recommended that if you are on cm-recovery you upgrade to Amon_Ra recovery >= 1.7.0 for your device." using this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4029315&postcount=1.
From then on I followed the steps to be found on http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Upgrading_From_CM_4.2_or_other_rooted_ROMS_to_5.0.x(Dream/Sapphire) and that worked perfectly.
I am now enjoying Android 2.1 and therefore completely satisfied. I hope that I will enjoy this version of Android even more after a couple days of using it.
Just a quick question re HTC Magic rooting 2.1. I tried to use the SAPPIMG method, but it gave me the wrong model ID error.
In order to downgrade my device, is my only option to create a goldcard?
Or is there some other way to get back to 1.5 or even 1.6 on my magic. (I have had very poor luck with gold cards on my hero... never got it working.) Or has Androot been updated to support 2.1 or was the exploit patched?
Thanks again.

I followed the steps on your process but got stuck at step 5.
It says that I do not have the right permissions.
what do I do to fix this?
Hi all, i am new on the forum and have read a lot about my HTC magic as root but I see it is very difficult because my model is 32A (with headphone port 3.5 on the top) so the fastboot I gives is that
saphire pvt 32A ship S-ON G
HBOOT-1.33.0013(SAPP31000)
CPLD-13
RADIO-2.22.28.25

I tried root with SuperOneClick, z4root, universal adro root, to no avail even the temporary root .I want is to install a custom ROM like CyanogenMod (if not the 5.0 6.0.xo .8) I did a custom install ms-dos recovery but I do not recognize the command fastboot, I hope to guide me and clear my doubts ,thanks and Greetings from Nicaragua!
Sorry for the english, i use google translate xD
You have MT3G v1.2 (it is not magic 32a)
SuperOneClick works and on Android 2.2.1 too. This is best and safest method to root.
What is your problem with it?
p.s. Try to use old versions of SuperOneClick...
Thank you for responding, the fastboot says it is a 32A, which has 288 mb of RAM, I will try with older versions of SuperOneClick ...
Yeah. It said, but the key thing is radio. Version 2.22.xx.xx is using by 32b magics.
In practice avoid install official ruu roms for 32a, cause they have radio 3.22.xx.xx or 6.35.xx.xx - so it will be "deadly".
Overall, there are 3 different models: 32a, 32b, mt3g v1.2
Sent from my A7-040 using Tapatalk
Are you sure about that? damage happens to me today, I found the official rom 1.6 with radio install it could not skip the activation of google and download the upgrade to 2.2.1 and everything always correct radio 2.22.28 32A, with respect to root SuperOneClick i tested with new version that came out yesterday and told me it was root but in making the test of the "su" command the phone does not showed me I needed root permissions. I'd say rare but i will try all versions of SuperOneClick to find one that I work, the good thing is that I can leave the factory, another thing I can do is leave it with 1.5 and look for a sim with data plan for the activavion and there whether to root for any software.
if others have my problem and want to become root or damaged their HTC myTouch visit this link from your post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=659403
download the number 46 (android 1.5 or 1.6 not sure) and 47 (OTA upgrade to 2.2.1), the 46 rename it to "sappimg.zip" and 47 to "update.zip" if you want to be root copy the sappimg.zip file in the root of the sd and turn the phone by pressing the "volume - + Power" and follow the steps, if all goes well, the phone started but need data plan to activate the phone and login with your google account when they do SuperOneClick can use the z4root or universal root, then put a modified rom.
can also choose to put the file update.zip to the root of the sd and start the phone with home + power key and select "apply sdcard: update.zip" and the phone started with 2.2.1 froyo original, this version Unlike the earlier you start the phone without activation of google.
thanks you for the support this forum is great!!!
I think you should use GingerBreak 1.2 to root your device. I've tried, it works fine.
