This might be a stupid question but does anybody know how to get apps off the market from a computer because i dont have internet on my xv6900, or can i download apps of a emulator or something?
there are sites that offer downloads of market apps, some are warez so I can't post links. you would then need to install via adb or place on SD card and use file manager to install them.

You could connect to the internet via Activesync & download stuuf from Markeplace. That is what I do.
You can also check out androidfreeware.org. Not a huge selection but still some descent stuff.

So i rooted my new sprint hero this evening and installed the modaco 1.1 rom and have some ?s.
1. How do i do the apps to sd stuff
2. Google maps doesnt work anymore... how do i fix it?
3. How do i do the tether it to my wifes laptop?
4. What else can i do with it now?
For apps2sd you have to make sure you have an ext(1234)? partition. So save everything you want off your sdcard and then do the following.
Turn off your phone,
Reboot while holding the home button.
When the green menu comes up, select Part SD Fat32+ext2+swap
hit the home button.
Voila! Apps2sd should work. not sure if you'll have to reinstall your apps to get them to go to the sd card though.
I just started with all of this stuff too. But here Is the tether app.
code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Paste that in your browser.
Ok thanks for that app link! I have formatted already and i had to uninstall the apps to stop getting force close errors.

Hi guys, newbie here and i just had my x8 for a week. upgraded it to 2.1 and had it rooted as well.
now the problem is, i can't seem to connect to Android market. i have a google account and its working but i keep on getting the below message whenever i try the market. i can connect to the internet and browse with no problem at all
i saw some threads on other units experiencing the same problem and they said that reseting the phone will fix this. now my question is, will this also work on my x8? once i had the phone reset, will it also erase my 2.1 and root update??
please help guys! thanks a million!

Happened to me once with incorrect APN settings. That was after a factory reset. Same scenario, can browse the internet and all. But I'm using an x10. Might be worth checking additional APN settings with your network provider.

hello
can any one of you help me. I buy xperia X8 without android market apps install in it. How can I install it? thanks for your concern
I'm really really excited...! This is my dream tablet, I've been waiting for this for over a month. And now its finally mine! But there is a problem, since I've no WiFi network in my house(for now), how can I install applications. I know the android applications are .apk format, but I don't know from where to download them. I got the file manager HD .apk file but I don't know how to install it. Please help!
Youll have to root your tablet then you can install apks locally. Alternatively you can try easy installer. You will need a internet connection as its required by the Market to install apps.

I don't think you have to root to install apps locally... as long as you have the unknown sources option checked, you can install apps from wherever you want. If you have a desktop with internet that you can get to, you can download the apk's from various torrent sites, and I think there is a web version of the android market? I'm sure there are other places as well, just search on Google. anywhooo, then just transfer the file over to your A500 via the USB cable or flash drive, and open the file through the app manager option that pops up when you tap on it, then click install.
I have had no problem download APKs onto my desktop computer and then putting them on a Micro SD card to use on the A500 without having to root anything.
u can use Docs to go to navigate to .apk on your tablet and launch instal from there. Thats my way)

Congrats on getting your Inconia!
For apps like the filemanager you could just download them from the Android marketplace, then they would install themselves. Otherwise, place them on your sd card if you're downloading to your PC first. Apps will also install if they are in your download folder on the tablet (say for example, if you download from the dev's website or email them to yourself as an attachment).
One thing you might have to do first is check the setting that allows you to install "unsigned" third-party app. I believe it's: Setting->Applications->Unknown Sources.
From what I understand, there's not much concern of installing something harmful anymore (for which this setting was designed to protect against), but I could be wrong. Just be careful who you are getting the app from if it's not from the market, a dev's site or a reputable person here at the forum.
That's my $.02 Have fun!
Just get a home network!
Enjoy your Iconia....I love mine!
Congratulations
- No need to root for installing apk, just check the checkbox (the Iconia will told you what you have to do anyway)
- Get a wifi quick
Need Moboplayer and A good office editor
Hi, I still need few days to set up my WiFi network at home, in the mean time, can any one share any direct download link to .apk files like moboplayer and a good office editor?
got my nook yesterday, registered, and ready to go...
the e-ink is really good on my eyes and i'm lovin it...
now to what i'm here for..
as everyone i want to hack my nst for a better e reading experience, a li'l browsing, a few gud themes and a few games.
i want some help in doing it. i could have gone through the forums but there being many, it really is a bit hard to choose the right one and in right order. i would like anyone of you to share the links in order of it supposed to be done, i.e. backing up my default files and then to hacking etc. a video tutorial link would be more appreciated. As i have some of my books scanned, suggest a reader to read scanned pdfs after hacking...
and of course i'm not a regular hacker, except that i have hacked my psp once so no problem getting along with the instructions...
Expecting a few gud responses, thanQ

Now to make backup of my factory files, I tried the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1142983 which guides me to backup my files. but the noogie.img link does not have any download in that thread. what really is noogie and please give me an alternate link to noogie.img.

You need to follow the redirect link on NookDevs. The page has been moved. noogie.img is available from that page.
thanks again, i'm done with backing up too.
now, i couldn't find a way to install the first app in the nook memory. of course u can use file manager, but there's no file manager preinstalled, is there? how to get to that apk file?

Wait... are you trying to do the manual rooting process? There are automated rooters. Noogie is used to backup and root manually (if you want to).

Assuming you used the latest TouchNooter, Super Manager should work. I think SM is new from the version of TN that I last used.
Or, once Market is working, download your favorite.

my doubts dont seem to be ending any soon....
-i'm done with everything, even market's working. but i couldn't search in market. when i type in search box and enter - no response...
-i managed to find 'file manager'' in top free app list and installed it. now when i try to install the apks in micro sd card, it says 'for security,ur phone is set to block non android sourced apps',though i checked 'allow non market apps' in nook color tools. suggest me a way to install the apps in card.
-the market shows the apps with $ pricing, how to make it regional?
-sometimes while swiping to scroll, the page goes to the end all the way...
-after rooting the wifi is disconnecting frequently
thanks in advance...

That seems to be a problem some people have and others don't. What version of the B&N firmware are you running?

Sounds like you need to allow 3rd party apps. Launch NookColor Tools, then toggle the Allow Non-Market Apps settings off and back on. Then try again.

This may be related to the B&N firmware version you're running. Apparently, the NST v1.1.0 has known problems with some 802.11n networks, WPA2 settings and various other random wifi issues. I don't believe TN touches wifi, so it shouldn't have changed.
would you say go ahead, if i say i'm gonna restore the factory settings with the backup and root again?
and yes, i rooted with the latest touchnooter (the link u posted)
Hi everyone,
I just got my n4 and love it but would like to be able to download apps/games off the net and install them. What do I need to do? I'm very new to this as I've come from iPhone jailbreaking I know it's different.
Thanks

You don't need to root. Hypothetically, let's say you didn't have access to the Play Store and wanted to download and install apps. Just find the apk file for it, such as "File Manager APK," transfer to your phone, then click it to install it. It might ask you to go to settings to allow Unknown Downloads, and if it asked, do so. Only use this for free apps =D
Ah okay perfect! What is rooting for then? Also does anyone know a site that specializes in free APS? Not paid necessarily just apks to get

Rooting helps with some apps that require it in particular, such as Titanium Backup. Rooting alone just helps unlock a few features, although it doesn't add anything until you act (unlike Jailbreaking which adds in Cydia and such). Read here
As for the free apps you can't get from Google Play, just searching on Google might bring something up.
I prefer to just install over adb.
Code:
adb install *.apk

Just pay for them. I used to do what you're talking about and its ****, not only was I ripping developers off and stifling their innovation, I was also wasting time looking for new updates and finding fixes
I don't sideload any paid apps now, if I like the app enough to want to look for the apk, I'll buy it ... If I can't afford it, I add it to my wishlist and purchase it when I can
Sent from my Nexus 4
Also, you should remember there is a risk on installing apps from an unknown source.
If you don't want to use the Play Store, you can download some APKs here, on XDA. Those apps are non-commercial versions released by the greatest developers in the world: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1913 , http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=530 .
Awesome cheers for the heads up I think ill pass on getting the paid stuff for free

Okay, I have a question;
There are some free apps that aren't available in some countries. Also, there are some free apps available on specific websites only which aren't on the Play Store (like free apps on XDA, Swype).
I tried emailing a free app to my friend- he has a Nexus 4- but it won't allow him to download the .apk file on his phone and run it. I've also tried to send .apk files to a Galaxy Nexus via Bluetooth but it says that the file isn't supported and fails to be sent on the phone!
Is there a solution to this or is the answer to simply transfer the file via the USB cable?

How are you sending the APK file? Through email? I know some emails block out files that can be 'dangerous'. For example, gmail doesn't let you transfer exe files.
What is the exact error that he's experiencing?

Or he may upload the file to sites such as mediafire. Or change the "Tail" of the file, from exe to anything else, or zip it.

I have the .apk file stored on my memory card of my Galaxy S3. I simply attached it to Gmail and sent it to his email address through my phone. I know for a fact that Gmail does not block .apk files so there's no need to zip them! He said that the phone would not let him install it. I really hope that he has "Unknown Sources" ticked. That would be embarrassing if he hasn't allowed that (he's new to Android and lives far away so it's hard to get a quick reply from him).
But onto my point of sending the .apk file via Bluetooth; it simply would not allow me to send it to a Galaxy Nexus (yes, I know this is a Nexus 4 forum but I feel that I'd experience the same issue on a Nexus 4). The file was not compatible, apparently (although it ran and installed fine on my Galaxy S3).
I simply don't have a Nexus device to test these things with and my friends keep asking me such questions that's why I'm asking around. It'd be great to know the answer so that I can fully recommend Nexus devices to iPhone users.
