I'm looking to buy a new MicroSD and wondering if getting a class 10 over a class 6 would make a significant difference to the phone (if im using data2sd and or apps2sd)
Thank you!
I think the difference between class 6 and 10 would feel minor, where-as the difference between the class 2 and class 6 feels huge.
And since this is the Vibrant forums, I should mention that the internal memory in the phone is very fast. I tested it at over 10MB/s write on my first phone. My second phone its closer to 6 MB/s write. So you apps and stuff should run perfectly fine from the internal app storage.
I should also mention that I purchased the new kingston micro sd thats rated class 4 but claims speeds upto class 10. Upon testing that I got 9 MB/s write. ($28 after $10 reward from buy.com). My previous class 2 16GB card tested it 2.6 MB/s write for comparison.

Just to help out here...
the difference between class 2 and class 6 is the exact same as class 6 and class 10. Remember the cd-rom speeds (52x, etc)? That's how the speed is calculated for a SDHC card. So a class 2 = 2x cdrom, class 6 = 6x, class 10 = 10x.
whether our hardware has capability to handle what a class 10 can do, that I don't know. I'd definitely advise to get something with more space than a 2GB card though - I'm not sure everyone needs a 32 (personal opinion/long discussion), but I absolutely agree it should be improved upon.

I understand that, thats why i picked those classes. But my point is that a class 6 card is 3x the speed of a class2 where class 10 isnt even twice as fast as the class 6. So the perceived difference is smaller, even though the technical difference is the same.
I'm still running a class 2 and I've been wondering if this is holding me back on this phone (card was previously in my G1).
Will the lower classes function the same (creating ext2 etc...) it's just a matter of speed? Just wondering if there's anything that simply can't be done with a class2 or even 6 that could be done with a 10.

Just cost you more. Do you really need a class 10 for this phone? Avatar is on a card that isnt even a class 2.

xD What class was the stock sd card?
I only ever see class 6+ cards being used in higher end compact cameras and SLRs.
Putting anything higher than class 6 in a phone your using for apps/music/movies isn't needed and just a waste of money.
I've also seen a lot of people saying the memory card speeds with the galaxy s are bottlenecked right now, so your not even going to get top speeds with a class 6.

While the card isn't marked, it tests out at just over 4MB/s which would put it in a class 4.
And we should be clear that the class refers to the write speed. A class 2 will read at 10 MB/s just like the other classes. Where you run into issues with class 2 cards is when you start modding or running programs from the sd card. If you use the card for a swap partition or something the write speed now plays a major factor in the usefulness.
If all you want it for is to place your music files on there and listen to them, then a class 2 will be plenty. That was my initial thought when I bought my 1st 16 GB card for my mytouch3g. Then I got into custom roms and found myself limited.
How do you test the speed of the SD card?
What size microsd card are you looking for? If its a 32GB, I have only seen a Sandisk microsd in Class 2. As far as I know there are no higher classes at this time. Hopefully that will change soon. I would like to get all of my music onto one 32gb card.

This isnt exactly true. with cdroms the X stands for how much faster it would spin in relation to a audio cd. So 1x ment it spun at the same speed as a audio cd. 2x was twice, ext ext. And this was a max speed.
Classes for SDCard stands for the minimum transfer speed. class two is at least 2mbps, class 6 is 6mbps, and so on.

it will test the read and write speed as well as operations per second.
I still can't find a 32gb microsd class 10, anyone find one for sale?
Class 10
Class 10 limitation presently is 8 gig for all brands except the Kingston and soon to be released Silicon Power. The Kingston brand never benches as advertised, so they are not reliable from my point of view. Silicon power has been pretty solid on their claims from my testing versus their claims, but I have not yet got my hands on the latest class 10 16 gig, I have been trying to buy for the since 10-1-2010 but not out in USA yet.
Kingston (in my opinion) is rife with false claims and I find their products have always been sub par.
Flashing and alike works better with class 6 over class 2 & 4. So, if you really want more memory the only 32 gig class 6 I have seen advertised (amazon) are: Transcend, Centon, and Komputerbay (what a name?!) 32 gig Class 6
Other than that, we wil just have to wait until they get the algorithm figured out for a micro ad card with that much ram and that fast.
Get the app "sd card speed test" it works ok Im sure there are others as well
I imagine the only reason you would need a Class 6 card or above is if you plan to take a lot of HD video. Apart from that, even a Class 2 is fast enough to keep up with the still camera, not to mention anything that just requires reads, like music or movie playback.
As for running apps off an external SD card, why would you ever want to do that? You can load close to 2GB on the internal app space, which is likely way faster than any mounted external SD card. I feel like an app whore and I'm not even close to using half that space. By the time apps start getting large enough that it's an issue, we'll be on the Vibrant 2 or beyond.
glad that you asked

because I just picked up a 16G class 10 by WinTec last week and it is VERY fast from boot up with 9G occupied from 15G available (wondered 1G gone to? and that is a lot of gone G lol). It was $42 wo tax expensive but so far the fastest.
Whoohoo
mine 16G class 10 tested 2x >8M and 1x >9M write, 3x > 18M read and it was probably so fast that the result said "unknown class" lol. x means 1 run with 2MB buffer setting. Downloaded app call SD card speed tester.
There are now some 32GB class 6 SDCARDS on the markey, and with 2.2 and installing apps to SD that might matter. It might also matter if you have a TON of music and images, as "Scanning SD for Media" would be faster.
You will pay money for the time savings though.
Might sound like a strange question, but what would you suggest getting for most stable Android run. I've had a SAN DISK 16GB but it would always get corrupt and formatting (tried using SD Formatter/windows tools/phone) would only fix the problem for short time.
So which of the following in your opinion is the most reliable choice:
1. SAN DISK
2. PATRIOT
3. Kingston
4. ADATA
5. Transcend
6. Lexar
7. SONY
Also, what class (2,4,6 would be nice if someone could explain whats best and generally what it means). As well as capacity (whether it affects reliability)
No one buy the kingston class 4 4gb card, does not work well at all! I trashed it lol
i got a Class 10 Patriot card, works well, really well
Transcends 8gb Class 6!
Never had a problem with it
Hi, I am using transcend 8Gb card. I dont find any problem till now.
RiData 16GB Class 6
Been using it for 2 weeks. No issues.
Write & Read transfers are averaging 9mbs when transfering backups to and from.
Kingmax 8Gb Class 6, not bad
Don't buy transcend 8gb class 6 card in any situation, it has really bad power drainage problem in every build, after I swapped it with my friends verbatim class 4 8gb I have top 1 % per hour drain in standby, believe me.
Stock 16 gb san disk I got when I purchased my hd2, runs amazingly
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Got 3 sandisks 2 4 8gb..all work well
I use stock card
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Any way to check faulty micro sd?
Thanks everyone for the input, seems like I've either got a faulty SanDisk card or doing something wrong here. Are there any tools to test whether or not my 16Gb SanDisk micro sd is faulty or possibly corrupt... By the way, I got it off ebay for $20... seems fishy, although it came in original packagin brand new.
...
German TakeMS 4GB Class6, works like a charm...
Transcend 16gb class 6 runs Android with no hiccups at all and the transfer rate is blazing fast
Samsung 4Go Class 4, low battery drainage, performs like a class 6 card. Original style (grey coloured).
Battery consumption
Battery consumption on Transcend sucks if you want long battery life use sandisk or best by my tests 8gb class 4 Kingston.
i have 4 different sd cards kingston 4 gig class 2, 2 sandisk 4 gig , and a class 6 transcend 8 gig...and i always get better results with the stock card

Sd card don't have jack sh*$ to do with battery drain. As far as cards go, it don't matter. Just pick one. There all the same regardless if someone says this one is faster because it's a class 6, or 8. I have a class 2,4, and 8. No difference what so ever. Even though its written on the class 8 at a higher speed.
Any idea on why sometimes I find non-removable random symbol files on my SD? Does this indicate corruption?
German TakeMS 8gb class 6 extreme fast and stable.
beware buying microsd on ebay
chk this site before buying http://sosfakeflash.wordpress.com/
A quick flick to scroll seems to be impossible. Does anyone know the registry tweak that edits the initial scroll lag? Thanks!

um yes, thanks but no thanks. I have a compatible sd card. if it isn't i wouldnt be able to use wp7.
my card works and has always worked. even with android i had no problem.
So you're telling me you have super fast flick-ing action? I highly doubt it.
Anyone else with a better suggestion?
Yeah, I have one - change your SD card.
I have great scrolling, no lag at all. The SD card makes a huge difference. When I was using a class 4 kingston, wp7 was laggy and didn't run that well... it still ran and used the card, though. But now using a class 2 sandisk, wp7 runs as smooth as butter... no lag and battery life is much improved. What kind of card do you have? Cards with good random access speed is what you want for wp7... usually lower class cards have better random access speed than higher class cards. Class 2 sandisk seem to work consistently well, but I guess some people have had issues. But even cards that are same class and same brand, but have different manufacturing numbers or serial numbers will be very different performance wise.
i have a sandisk 8GB class 4. it has never had any problem.
are you guys telling me that by downgrading to a class 2, i may have a faster WP7 OS?
that is ridiculous!
can anyone confirm this?
I'm still using Class 4
I will backup my data and test this tomorrow.

You might... it really depends on the sd card. Sandisk class 2 cards made at one time can be very different than sandisk class 2 cards made 6 months later. Same with class 4 or with any sd card out there. When it comes to the random access speed, it can vary greatly... manufacturers don't test this speed and don't aim to make consistent scores of that. But usually the tricks that manufacturers do to get better sequential write scores on their chips end up hurting the random access speeds. That's why more class 2 cards are compatible and work better with wp7 than class 4, 6 and 10 cards. And if you are having lag, then that means you can definitely do better, because I have no lag at all at this point... maybe every once in a while I'll get a little lag here or there, but overall, it's VERY smooth. I haven't installed my apps yet... only like 10 or so apps from the market, and only copied one music album over so far, so maybe I'll get more lag when more is installed... not sure. I have 21gb partitioned over for wp7 on my sandisk class 2 32gb card. When I was using a kingston class 4, I definitely had a lot of lags and I hadn't even installed anything at that point. But I have heard that sandisk class 4 works good, too, but, like I said, when and what factory the chips were produced in can make a big difference with the random access speed which is what wp7 needs to be smooth.

Lag ???? WP7 is smooth as butter, this is why I'm still using WP7 over LAGGY Android.
ps: I'm using Sandisk 2gig class 2
It's all to do with your micro SD card, my old Samsung 8gb card, ran ok, but would somtimes lag, not load marketplace, things would crash and the occassional autoreboot as well, so I ordered one of the Microsoft recommended sandisk 8 GB ultra microsd cards, not a single lag, no crashes, things run so smooth and fast its really quiet amazing. How ever many times and different ways you format your card if its not the right one it will never run wp7 smoothly
Have a Sandisk 16GB Class 2. in Marketplace lags, slow download, slow load pictures

You should take the class 2 sandisk back and order a class 2 sandisk from somewhere else... most class 2 sandisks work great with wp7. But like I said in several other posts, just because the brand and class are the same, doesn't mean the card will perform the same. They don't test the random access speed on cards so it's not consistent on cards, and it's random access speed that matters with wp7. I was just testing my cards today... I have one class 2 16gb sandisk with great random access speed and works great in wp7, and I have another class 2 sandisk that has bad random access speed and makes wp7 laggy. The read and write speeds were the same on the cards, though. My class 2 32gb sandisk has good random access speed, and my class 4 32gb sandisk I just got yesterday has even better, but my old class 4 sandisk 4gb card has terrible random access speed. My class 4 32gb kingston and my class 6 8gb kingston both have terrible random access speed as well.
Cards of same class from same manufacturer can have different chips made in different factories depending on when and where they were made. Also, a lot of the time, the chips the they make to have higher sequential read and write speeds will have worse random access speeds, so you will probably have better luck running wp7 with a class 2 than with a class 6 or 10. Microsoft reported this from their testing of memory cards for wp7. This doesn't necessarily mean a class 4 or 6 card won't work just as good or better than some class 2 cards, and it doesn't necessarily mean a class 2 card will work well. The problem is that the random access speed is not rated for cards so it's not kept consistent on cards. But at this time, it seems the class 2 sandisk seem to have the most consistent high random access speeds, but again, doesn't mean all of them will. Like I said, I have a class 2 16gb sandisk that doesn't work well (which is the one I bought retail), but the class 2 16gb sandisk that came with my phone works very well. Also, I just got a new class 4 sandisk 32gb card which I haven't tried for wp7 yet, but from benchmarking the card, it looks like it will work very well. I'm gonna test it with wp7 tonight.
So Ive been using the 16gb Class 2 sd card that came with my HD2 for WP7 and I havent really had any problems with it. Occasionally it reboots for no reason, but aside from that, its perfect. However, my friend just gave me his 4gb Class 4 card. Should I keep using the 16gb or reset my phone with the faster 4gb?
simple test, all sd cards work differently
my Nokia 4GB Class 6 is better than may Sandisk 16GB Class 2
Xbox Live Installation: ( only the installation without download )
Nokia 4GB Class 6: 1:23 minutes
Sandisk 16GB Class 2: 9:41 minutes

Class 2 cards usually work better for wp7. Actually class means nothing when it comes to wp7... you want good random access speed for wp7 to run smooth. Many times, the tricks that manufacturers do to their cards to get higher sequential write speeds will actually reduce the random access speed. They don't keep the random access speed consistent on any of their cards as that speed isn't rated, so even cards of the same brand and class can differ greatly from batch to batch. A card made one day may run wp7 well while the same card made a month later may not. So far it seems class 2 sandisk are the most consistent in keeping good random access speed, so if you are going for a card for wp7, go for class 2 sandisk with model numbers ending in A11M. If you already have a card that works well, no reason to switch unless you want to change the size, because there's no way to guarantee a card will work well until it's tested.

Ordinarily the SanDisk class 4 is the SD of choice. That is because it has superior small file read/write speeds to higher class SDs. The one you are asking about is relatively new and I don't know if many have tried to see how well it works. Look at this thread to see why most recommend the class 4:

So Sandisk cl 4 is enough for running cm 7 from it.(I asked the question because I wanted to be clear wether the UI would be snappy with class 4).
Thank you for saving me some
I honestly can't tell any difference in running from emmc or a Sandisk Class 4... in terms of UI responsiveness..
