Hi folks,
I got my Nexus One last night and it is awesome. I loved what HTC did on Windows mobile, having taken a journey from the TyTn II, Touch Pro and finally Touch Pro 2. But Android is AMAZING.
I shall never go back to windows mobile (which is a shame as I loved NRG's roms!)...
Anyhow... I'd love to clear something up, about which I am quite confused.
I seem to remember from repeated posts and threads and articles that multitouch was not supported by the default Google apps, such as the browser, gallery, maps, etc.
Well, imagine how suprised I was (and still am!) that ALL of these apps are supporting pinch zoom. Perhaps I'll be less lazy now and make a video or something, but I promise this is working.
Now, I did notice that the N1 asked to install an update to the software upon first boot up. Perhaps this brought these new capabilities?
NOTE -- I just did a google search and found some news articles confirming the above. But I decided to post this anyways to clarify this with anyone who comes across this.

Have you been living under a rock the last week?
Seriously, the update did indeed add the pinch&zoom support to a couple of google apps. The multitouch OS support was in android 2.x from the beginning, so its technically not quite correct to say that multitouch is new. Some 3rd party apps used multitouch for a while already.

LOL! No, I've been obsessive compulsively sitting in front of my computer hitting refresh....first on the Google Checkout page and then on the DHL tracking page.

IIRC, it has been a hackable feature since 1.5/6 and it is with 2.X they added it into the SDK officially.

The app titled: "Scriptures (beta)" shows up in my G1's market, but does not in my Nexus' market.
Any ideas what's going on?
Did you do any of the following to your Nexus One:
1. Unlocked bootloader?
2. Enable root?
If so, "Scriptures (Beta)" is a *protected* Android application and will not show up.
If not, then it's a OS "support" version issue.
Cheers,
Kermee

My new N1 is not unlocked/rooted, but my old G1 *is*. But it's the G1 that sees the app fine, and the new N1 does not.
Must be an OS support issue.
I downloaded the app directly from the author's website and it works fine.

Yup. If that's the case, the author needs to fix it and update it on Android Market.
It's annoying for us developers and the damn manifest and API target/limits when "new" stuff comes out... *Sigh*
Anyrate, good deal you got around it!

application compatibility
Your phone is listed as a 2.1 device in the market, and if the apps don't specify compatibility (they introduced a compatibility layer in 2.0.1) then they won't show up since they won't work anyway (well, they might, but the general assumption is that they won't)
I guess that explains why AppManager Pro isn't showing up for me on my N1. Annoying. I love that app.
This explains why, when people were talking about Nexus One Torch and I decided to see what it was, my G1 couldn't see it. Now I have a Nexus I can (and it's good )
There are some errors I think, because I want Bonsai Blast which I think I remember was demo'd by the Bonsai Blast google developer for either droid or 2.1. I think it was a demo for the new resolution, so I know it can't be that, and I don't think a google Dev would forget to update his extremely popular app.
Let the application owners know!
When the moto droid came out, I emailed a few developers and some even came out with an update the very next day!

can somebody e-mail the developer of Bonsai blast then please? or tell me his/her/their name(s)/email?
If we take the conservative assumption that it must be listed on the Google's own market place before it would work on Nexus, how many applications are available at the moment? Is there good statistics on that yet?
Perhaps most of them would work on Nexus one anyway? Love to hear from people who have tried using the applications written for the older OS version and see if they are generally still compatible. It's hard to imagine how a version upgrade would upset the older applications too much.

Really the only set-back is the resolution. All of the hardware has exponentially increased. All of Androids apps are written in java, which is pretty standard and should have no problem running on all android platforms.
The only time it should be disallowed would be if a game were to be written for the N1 specs (which cannot run on the G1), and therefore not shown in the market for the G1.
I suppose developers don't want their games to look too pixelated on the N1 until they update the resolutions. It's a waiting game now, since there are absolutely NO games available unless you want to play solitaire.
Or you could email the devs to death requesting an update...
Do you think that this froyo is the real froyo?
There area lot or difference with the keynote one... musica interface, mail interface, a2sd, Chrome connetion, market, and so other...

APPS2SD is implemented, as is Chrome2Phone.
Not sure what you mean by mail interface though, but Gmail has been improved.
FRF50 probably isn't the final release though.

Like Rusty said, no this probably isn't the final release but it's damn close. As discussed in other threads, a lot of that stuff is from the "beyond Froyo" part of the keynote. For example there is speculation that the Music app is from a early Gingerbread build: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=686469.
Apps to SD is implemented completely, it's just up to developers to add a couple lines of code. The OS won't move apps until that API is implemented so it knows, if it can or should be moved.
The cloud to device API is also fully functional. There are working Chrome and Firefox extensions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=686570
The new desktop Market with music purchases will likely come at the same time as the streaming music software, which according to Simplify Media's blog, should be within three months, I'm guessing around the time of the iPhone launch.

Indeed, I think that there are going to be minor updates to froyo coming soon. Especially considering the simplify media isn't available yet. Maybe that will just be software and not require an app... i dunno. But Andy Rubin did say that the simplify media technology "is in froyo." So, there you go. Take it for what its worth.

This was an artical on a norwegian mobile site
This summer, it was said that Android 2.2 version of the Galaxy S probably would get an official version in September. September is known as the passed, but the update is now just around the corner.
- We have estimated the deployment in mid-October, and hopefully the update will reach users during the next week, "said Stig Ove Langø, major account manager in Samsung Norway.
Your phone is much faster
Android OS 2.2, also called Froyo, is a major update. Some of the highlights:
The browser has been quicker to load sites with Javascrip
Applications will load two to five times faster that everything does not have to be before you start, but it all happen on the way
Processor performance of the phone in general should be better
Memory handling must be very much faster.
Exchange support is greatly improved
The phone can function as Wi-Fi router
In addition, there are a lot of other things that have changed when it comes to user interface. The full list can look at the Android development page.
Great

Ah, that's good news. amobil.no are usually more dependable than any operator. So this might just be the right deal...
it depends where the corner is...
i think is near too.
Samsung just tweeted this:

We’re very sorry about the delay with the release of Froyo. We're working on it round the clock & will post an update as soon as we have one
They like to tweet something like that every other week to make us think it's nearby. All we can do is wait.
hey tweeted that on the 8th i believe, and probably re-tweeted it again
i hope to god its just round the corner, im not moaning believe me, i moaned a hell of alot more with my hero and the delays for 2.1
GPS best be fixed, as no matter what rom i have flashed, it takes an age to lock on, and when it does at best im about 100 metres away from where i actually am
The filesystem is shocking also
all in all though, i love the music player, samsung always get that bit right
that gps problems is a hardware problem some guy who sended his phone back got a new antenna(different material) in it and then it worked fine! its with the first batch of phones. i got a phone that came with jm2 instead of fp3 from when i got it right out of the box and my phone is good and acurate on gps quick fix and very accurate 5-10 meters
Its a software problem with the GPS. i get 5-10 meters accuracy too. But when i slow down everything went jumping around... locking is not a problem for me. Its only that it cant rly lock me to one place. So i guess its a software problem
yea its jumping a little i just noticed in a gps monitoring program but it keeps locked on (rarely they go all gray for a sec but then its back again)(gives no problems in actual navigation) here and while driving and navigating in car with sygic mobile maps it never looses track

FroYo better be good or I'm selling and getting WP7. Although I was against it from the start its shaping up to better than Android.
I love Android but its not polished as an OS yet. It really isn't. Samsung's AWFUL software department doesn't help either.

Hope they take their time to make the update really worthwhile. No problem waiting for it.

So because Android still has a few quirks to sort out and needs some polish here and there, you're considering jumping to a spanking new, "fully rewritten" platform?
Among the features that are not yet present are cut, copy, and paste, full multitasking
[...]
Support for removable SD cards and tethering have also been left out of the OS. Microsoft claims this to be in the interest of data security for enterprise users. Windows Phone 7 will also not support Silverlight in the web browser or IPsec virtual private network (VPN) security, videocalling, a system-wide file manager, Bluetooth file transfers, and music player equalizers.

Worked fine yesterday ... update last night ... settings reset this morning.
I think a bigger issue would be the lack of Google docs support, and the lack of uploading larger videos over 3G instead of WiFi only.

True. But I am really sick and tired of all these promised "feature" that don't work at all or don't work properly.

What other features don't work at all?
Multiple calendar sync is broken.
Contact data entry is extremely limited compared to the web ui.
I do like that I've made the switch to Android from winmo, but am missing a lot of features that I used to have. I was basically free to do anything, but feel so limited now to what Google is giving us. Hopefully this is resolved soon and we are able to get full functionality from our nexus one devices.

What did you come from? A WM phone? Windows Mobile has been around for 10 years.

Android has been through 6 MAJOR versions ... if they can't fix the basics, maybe they shouldn't be competing in the space.
Or maybe Google should stop that dumbass policy of only releasing BETA software. Others seem to be able to release software that works fine, admittedly with less features. Get the basics right and then add features one by one and make sure they all work before releasing them.
Punch them? You can't even see those ninjas!

Amazon is selling it for a $0.01, so I think I'm ready to take the plunge into WP7 and what seems to be the best phone on the platform. I develop almost exclusively on the .NET platform, own an Elite, and love Zune. I think I'll fit into the ecosystem nicely! I've seen varying spec sheets that say this phone has a FFC. True story??
Also, are there any tethering solutions available? Are apps being updated to take advantage of TOAST notifications? Do 3rd party apps utilize Live Tiles? What's the latest on the Jan. update?

No FFC (assuming you mean front facing camera).
Yes you can tether "unofficially" using the diagnostics mode, but, yes it works and it is very well documented.
Apps can and do send toast notifications, but, they must be allowed by the end user.
Yes, 3rd party apps do, indeed, use live tile notifications, as well.
M$ will only confirm Cut and Paste in the January update, though much else is rumored.
Thanks! It should be on the doorstep by the 22nd.
Enjoy

Love mine. Vast improvement over TP2 running WM 6.5 and Android. Miss vcard support, cut & paste, and video MMS, but these are fairly minor and will probably be included in updates soon. Never used phone as mass storage, so I'm not in that camp...
