'Search Phone' Performance with Mega Contacts Database - HD2 General

HD2 with ROM version 1.48.831.0 *71294) WWE. I've just gotten off the phone with HTC support and confirmed that, for Hong Kong English with Chinese functionality, this is the very latest version ROM available.
I have a contact list of ~370 entries. For me the standard 'Search Contacts' functionality works for >90% of my searches.
An acquaintance asked if I would help him by loading his contacts to my HD2 to see if this phone could take the place of his Treo. He has 8,867 (yes, eight thousand eight hundred sixty-seven) contacts....
I'm providing full details to support my issue below. I will include the questions here so not everyone has to read my ramblings.
1. Are there any tweaks that may help to improve the performance of Search Phone vis-a-vis Contacts?
2. Any indexing that could be performed on the phone to improve these search?
3. Any known issues at HTC regarding this function?
4. Any alternative programs that would be better suited to handling this volume of contacts compared to Outlook? The end-user is non-technical so a GUI is required.
Steps taken:
I backed up my own data (Sprite Backup) and then performed a hard reset.
The initial Outlook to Phone sync took 1-hour and three minutes. The Outlook PST contains only 8,867 contacts - there are no calendar, tasks or note entries. No Mobile Favorites or Files are being synced.
The sync is reported as Successful. I power off the phone and back on. I wait at least 60 seconds before attempting to do anything. The default backlight off setting is 60 seconds so I have to wake the phone by touching the hang-up button. Slide button to the right to unlock (no password defined).
I touch the Contacts Home Screen Tab. I have 3x3 blank tabs. I click the All People link at the bottom left. It takes 10-seconds before I see the first six contacts (New + Me + 6). I click the 'Z' index at the bottom right and see that I do have contacts that begin with the letter Z. I assume I really do have the 8,867 contacts in the phone.
This acquaintance has built up his contacts over the length of his professional left. He is accustomed to using his Treo to search the data in all contact records fields, not just the contact name or company name fields.
I select one of his contacts at random (letter M index, first record) and note that it includes the word 'middle' in an address field. This will be my Phone Search keyword.
From the Phone Search program....
Search for: middle
Type: Contacts
I click the Search link at the bottom left.
The first time I followed the steps above, I did receive results, but only partial - contacts from A to C. The M contact that I extrated the keyword from was not included. At that point I figured I better check to make sure I had the latest ROM, see what tweaks might be available here or see if I should consider a different contact management program.
Having spent a fair bit of time searching these forums I have not found anything that seems to be related to this issue.
In preparing this message I have repeated the steps above after a soft reset. From the time I clicked the Search link to now it has been more than 13 minutes. Noting has been displayed in the Results window (except 'Searching...'). Each time the backlight has dimmed I have touched a single time in the results window to keep the phone from going to sleep.
My questions:
1. Are there any tweaks that may help to improve the performance of Phone Search vis-a-vis Contacts?
2. Any indexing that could be performed on the phone to improve search functions?
3. Any known issues at HTC regarding this function?
4. Any alternative programs that would be better suited to handling this volume of contacts compared to Outlook? The end-user is non-technical so a GUI is required.
Hey wait - I just received a complete set of results - after a delay of 20-minutes. The results include contacts from A thru Z. I had continued to touch the screen after each dimming while preparing this message. Could hardly believe my eyes when results were returned. FWIW searching contacts in Outlook for 'middle' takes less than 60-seconds to return 84 records.
My list of questions remain as above.
TIA for reading this far and for all suggestions!

New calendar entry by simply starting to type.

In a now ancient pda I could, provided the calendar app itself had focus, create new calendar entries simply by starting to type [on the hardware keyboard].
A new entry would be created on whatever day had focus, and simply pressing Enter after entering the text would close the "new entry" dialog box, accepting default values for the other fields.
This way I could, during a briefing or similar, rapidly create skeleton entries on at least the correct days and jot down a word or two on each. I could usually, later during the meeting fill in the details from memory.
Is there any calendar application that would allow me to do the same on a current pda with hardware keyboard, such as the Hermes? Currently, in lack of options, I've downgraded to a paper almanac, but that well... sucks... for a number of reasons.
I admit having been away from the WM scene for a while, so I apologize in advance if I'm asking about something annoyingly obvious.
Naturally I could record the meeting, but fiddling with extracting info from the recordings during the meeting itself isn't an option, and doing it "later" usually becomes "never", and people are sometimes uneasy about beeing recorded.

Challenge: link to specific contact

I would like to create a shortcut to a specific contact so that clicking on it takes you to the details page of that particular contact from where you can then choose how to contact that person (email, text, mobile phone, home phone, work phone).
So I've been messing with an lnk file:
1000#\Windows\poutlook.exe contacts ...
I tried -new as a command line parameter, and that works. I cannot figure out how to go to a specific contact. Then I found this discouraging thread:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa454208.aspx
There must be some way to do this. HTC Home has a similar function in their contacts tab. When you tap and hold a contact it takes you to that contact's detail page.
My end goal is to incorporate this into Mortbuttons ... I want a menu of favorite contacts, so when I click on any one, it takes me to the page where I can choose how to contact them. I'm surprised this doesn't exist, because that is the most intuitive way to do things. First you think of whom you want to contact, and only THEN do you think of how to contact them.
The challenge is up!
here's how its done
20#"\Windows\cprog.exe"-url tel: 0000000
that doesn't work. that calls the given phone number. I am looking for a link to a person's contact entry in Contacts. Please read my post above carefully.
I'd be interested in that as well. Anyone?
Wrote it already in my forum, but just in case...
I don't know of any way to do this from command line.
There is a way to show the contact page with COM/POOM (interface for programmers), which will be implemented in the upcoming MortButtons beta (probably tonight - CET).
It wasn't available so far because I still use eVC4 (because it's free and allows more easy support of systems up to including WM2003SE), which doesn't support new features of WM5 (like contact info page, contact image, contact ringtone, etc.) without some workarounds...

[Updated - Solution Now Available] Need to dial numbers direct from Notes or Calendar

Blackberrys hotlink phone numbers, email addresses, and url's automatically out of the box. MarkNDial and TreoSelectText do this on POS but you need to select the text first. I can't find anything to do this on WM. Does it exist?
For those of you not familiar with MarkNDial for the Palm OS, it allows you to highlight a phone number (in a task for a calendar appointment) and dial it directly.
Does anyone know of a similar app for WM (expecially one that works in Notes)? Any help would be appreciated.
What is needed needs to be as simple as a click or 2. Selecting items is too much against my Treocentric ease of use. On Blackberrys it auto recognizes phone numbers, email, and url's in its notepad and other apps out of the box. Scroll to an item, click it, and it asks if you want to do the selected thing. One more click executes the instruction. Beautiful it its simplicity.
I have hundreds of numbers in notes I started in my Blackberry days for contacts I use infrequently so as to not clutter up my Outlook contacts, then I carried them over to my 700wx and found out that this functionality was sorely missing (not a big surprise for WM, but where are the third parties here). I am now a WM/Treo convert and am longing for the 800w.
The pending arrival of the 800w has renewed my interest in perfecting my Treo device and I would love to see this super efficient function added to WM to make the 800w even more useable then it will already be. Of course your device may vary but this would be a boon to all WM devices.
So is there anything out there like this or anyone to write it? I would gladly pay for a program or a script to fix this WM annoyance.
Great Solution
Hannip over at treocentral.com wrote and/or modified a MortScript to perfrom this function from a mapped button. In totally works, and does even more!!!
In summary:
MultiSwitch6 checks what app is running in the foreground and does the following.
1) If mail app - open the folders (fix for a major non-one handed annoyance).
2) If calendar - find phone numbers and prompt to call.
3) If notes - prompt to call the phone number where the cursor is.
4) Else run Pocket Internet Explorer or modify for app of choice.
Follow the thread and get the MortScript here (note: latest script is around post #11):

Add missing WP7/Omnia 7 functionality here

LIVE TILES/HOME SCREEN:
- Power control toggles (e.g. Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, etc.)
OVERALL
- Marking/selection of any text passage, and
- Copy/paste (wtf, hasn't MS learned anything from the mistakes made by Apple...?)
ALARMS
- Display of alarm icon in the notification area of the 'home screen', when one or more alarms have been set (not ONLY on the lock screen)
PEOPLE
- Ability to save phone number in Call History or Conversations lists to existing/new contact
MEDIA PLAYER
- Sound playback in Bluetooth (+wired?) headphones when watching video content/podcasts
IE BROWSER
- Display of/access to URL in landscape mode
I agree with Copy and Paste, but have only needed it once or twice so am happy to wait until Jan or whenever they're gonna stick it in.
Hadn't noticed the ID landscape thing, but now you've pointed it out I guess they should probably sort that too (although there'd be very little view of the page by the time the keyboard and address bar are displayed in landscape mode)
You can save a number from your call history if you tap it, then at the bottom there's a save button.
The things I'd like to see fixed are:
MAPS
- Get the compass working so I can see what direction I'm walking in
INTERNET EXPLORER
- Ability to change what the search button does, and what page loads when you first start IE after switching the phone on. (T-mobile have managed to set both the homepage and the search button to point to the crappy t-mobile-favourites page, which is a bit annoying)
PICTURES
- See who's tagged in photos (either through Facebook or through Windows Live Photo Gallery)
- Ability to stop photos from Facebook showing up - these may be duplicates from what you've already put on the device
PHONE
- It would be good to have smart dialling available rather than having to go through contacts
One think really annoys me: We cannot disable vibration on back, win and search keys.
Missing Send Contact
I'm not sure if this is missing content or if I'm being too stupid to work it, but that's not my usual style so I'm assuming it's missing till someone puts me straight.
I wanted to send a contact by text (or any other method) today but can't seem to find out how to do this.
Any ideas?
I don't think theres a solution for this.
I heard someone saying before, that there is not a nice way available to send/ copy contact-data.
Bluetooth SIM Access Profile
Anyone know if the Bluetooth SIM Access Profile will be coming in the next update? New phone doesn't work with my bloody car = I feel like I've just stepped back in time
Added the following to the first post:
ALARMS
- Display of alarm icon in the notification area of the 'home screen', when one or more alarms have been set (not ONLY on the lock screen)
Sticky camera settings
CAMERA
--------
I change the settings for the camera every time I take a photo. Particularly the "anti-shaking" setting as I can't seem to take a decent photo with that off. Settings always revert to defaults. Makes you wonder why there is a "Rever to default" option!

I noticed that today, as i also found myself taking better pics with the anti shake on. Other half tried to take a photo of herself and ended up asking me to take the pic, of which i found that setting off....odd
I would like vibrate on screen buttons as well as the hardware buttons.

Switch power off when charging the phone: should have the ability to switch off the phone when it is charging. It is not possible to do it now.
2G/3G toggle: The Omnia & I got from Orange doesn't have the option to toggle between 3G and 2G. It is set for 3G as default
Smart dialing: The dialer should display contacts that match the combination of letters/numbers being dialed
Tasks sync: Outlook should sync tasks in addition to Mail, Contacts and Calendar
Calendars: WP7 should sync all calendars in GMail and Hotmail. It only syncs the default calendar.
My wish list
I'd like:
Folders
Folders - want folders that I can pin items inside, ideally on both main 'Tile' screen and app list. Would really help to be able to organise apps into folders as the list is getting long already.
Volume
Would like different volume controls for Media and ringing. Would like these to be locked when the phone is locked too (unlocking the phone is no hasstle after all).
Caching/Updating
Would like apps like Facebook to cache data (only a few do this). I expect not an OS issue as some apps do it already - having them load from fresh when started is a pain as it means you need signal to look at content. I'd also like these apps to update automatically so content it there when they are opened.
Single Mailbox
Would like a single mailbox for all incoming mail.
Sim Lock
I use a Pin to protect my sim, if I miss entering this in initial boot the phone brings up a home screen but allows Emergancy calls only - getting to a point I can enter the Pin seems pointlessly difficult (seem to have to try and make a call).
Zune
Why is this so unintuitive....get rid of reserved space and clean it up. Content also seems very US centric, online (as in via the website) I can see a load more content than I can see in the app itself, presume this is due to me being in the UK.
Back and Search buttons
Allow apps to lock these buttons, lose count of how many times I have pressed these accidentally when playing a game or a video which gets really annoying.
Power button
Give me a 'do you want to shutdown' prompt, only found my phone turned off in my pocket a few times but not had it that long....the button is too easy to press accidentally and a prompt would solve a lot of these problems.

Orange provide this functionality for me by giving no 3G signal at home, would be better if I could choose to turn it on and off though...reliable 2G at home would also be good...
PEOPLE
- Ability to save phone number in Call History or Conversations lists to existing/new contact

You can do that.
Just in Call History press the phone number that want to save and then press the Save icon.
my wishlist:
1. PHONE:
- matching contacts should appear when dialling number or texting person's name
- call recording possibility would be a nice touch.
2. PEOPLE huB
- more customisation options (contacts sources sorting/hiding
3. MESSAGING:
- ability to edit MMS settings (MMS APN, default photo size, etc)
4. EMAIL/CALENDAR HUB:
- I do not like the idea of LIVE being leading account - If I add my live accoutn all the contacts and calendars are being fetched from there and synced live.
But I used to keep all my contacts and calendars at gmail - so I had to add gmail as well - that results in a big mess and you cannot turn your added LIVE account now - you might reset your phone to factory defaults and start again.
so I did and while I want my XBOX LIVE avatar I had to move all my contacts and other email providers to LIVE. I did that but now my default outlook calendar doesnt sync with LIVE calendar and WP7 calendar, and there is now ay to have it fixed...
If only MS would allow to choose what to import from LIVE it would be much better...
5. IE - no JAVA, no comment
MARKETPLACE - we need more quality software there
MAPS - I don't like bing approach, maybe I just have to get used to it ?
SERVICE AVAILABILITY - MS you need to start working hard and deliver solutions NOW!
It should not happen that only supported regions during the premiere are UK and US - your services like marketplace or zune don't work in many countries, XBOX Live is not supported in Poland, although there are tens of thousands of xbox360 sold here. I am afraid MS has to rethink their policies and this will be the main factor of WP7 success or fail.
I do not touch areas like multitasking, copy/paste and some other basics that should already be available in updates.
Just realized: Someone's actually made an app for submitting and voting for already submitted ideas for improvements to WP7. It's called "My WP7 Idea", and yes, it already contains my favourite ideas. USE IT!
... and please vote for this feature:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?p=9484842
Thank you!
User/MP3 Ringtones... allowing the ability to choose own mp3 ringtones
I don't like this thread being mixed wp7 and omnia specific features. wp7 features should go into the wp7 forum.
the omnia should get an app to turn on and off the led for flashlight purposes. other phones have that.

Samsung Touchwiz Changes...

Having used the GS-II, GS-III extensively...I feel there are some UI changes that Samsung should effect, which would go a long way in perfecting the phones in the software front, where they are near perfect on the hardware front...I thought we can have a thread as Samsung does listen to its users and brings about improvements in the firmware incorporating new features....
So request you all to add your suggestions here...and maybe (hopefully) Samsung will see this and attend to them...
1. DIALER -
1.1 Call log should be integrated in the dialer rather than be in a separate Tab
1.2 When we look up a contact using smart dial - the recently dialed contact should show up first/on top - as it happens on a HTC phone...Samsung shows all matching contacts in alphabetical order
1.3 When we look up contacts using smart dial and the number of matching contacts are large (say >15), and you press the pull down arrow - there is a 3-5 second lag before the list opens...this needs to be fixed
All of the above will go a long way in improving the telephony experience on a GS III
2. EMAIL Client -
2.1 The folders in exchange need to be organized as they are in the Exchange server - Initially only the main folders should be shown and the user can expand whichever folder they want to see the sub-follders
2.2 When you select a mail to move it to an exchange folder the folder list takes a good 10-15 seconds to open....(FIXED in Firmware BFLB )
2.3 When you select a mail to move it to an exchange folder, there should be on top a list of recently used 5 folders rather than the user having to scroll through all folders everytime
2.4 Landscape view should have two panes - folders and messages
3. Messaging Client -
3.1 If the messages in a thread are all locked, the thread list should show a lock next to the message header (as it does on HTC)
3.2 Each message header in the thread list should show number of messages in the thread
3.3 When you open a message thread, each message other than showing the time stamp, should show a tick for delivered (where delivery receipt is enabled) - this is implemented by Motorola Razr and HTC
3.4 The awful feature of a SMS being automatically converted to MMS when it exceeds a particular size needs to be disabled.
3.5 Native ability to send and receive contact cards via SMS (not MMS)
4. PIM/Others -
4.1 Samsung needs to learn facebook integration from HTC - there needs to be proper implementation of FB integration in the contact pics, contact statuses and calendar also
4.2 The lag in accessing the home screen needs to be fixed
More will be added above from time to time...
