I know many of us on this forum and others are suffering from this problem, but there aren't many people telling us if their phone is NOT rattling that way we know if we actually do have defective phones.
Take a moment and answer the poll!
its probably the autofocus mechanism in the camera.
Had a massive rattle with my xperia x1 i used to have - i replaced the handset with the warranty only to find the rattle was still there. some searching showed that it was the autofocus mechanism in the camera.
If you shake ur phone and you cant hear anything then i would assume its fine. tapping is obv more likely to elicit an abnormal sound
Correct. Basically the autofocus lens is set up like a voicecoil in a speaker. It rides on a tube wound with a coil placed in a magnetic field. There is movement when setting the phone down on it's back (less when laying it on it's face which is why you rarely hear it in that position).
Completely normal

I agree that it's camera, but I've seen atleast 3 people say that they have no rattle. Maybe they can't hear it, but it's worth taking a poll.
zero rattle
have not heard any camera rattle when tapped...
i have a slight rattle. i really hope too much rattling will not eventually cause camera to break or have blurry pics in the future. this is the first phone ive had where i actually use the camera/video capabilities
Seriously? A poll?
Definitely the autofocus.
Had an Xperia X1 myself and took a couple minutes to find out that the rattle was the autofocus.
Probably don't wanna tap at it too much, though. Might not do anything, but can never be too careful.
Edit: Oh, and yes... My Nexus One rattles when I tap near the camera as well.
That's good to hear, mine rattles too, and I was starting to get worried...
Mine rattles, if i hold it up to my ear and tap it, something in there is definitely rattling in there. In all likely hood the zoom/focus mechanism.
I never noticed it by tapping near the camera. I have Vibrate on key press when I type and thats how I first noticed it. When I type and the phone vibrates, you can hear the rattling, it's quite obvious and getting annoying since I type a lot on my phone.

Hey there,
My HD makes a resonating / ratling noise when I tap my finger on the camera area at the bakside.
Is someone else experiencing this too?
I tried twisting it a bit, pressing between fingers but it still resonates.
Is this perhaps the G-sensor / accelometer?
I've also noticed that, even with the stylus removed, if you hold the HD in one hand and tap it against you other hand, you can hear something move.
Now that you mention it, I guess it must be the G-sensor!
So.... is it?!
A small rattling is probably the G-sensor, my K850 makes a small noise due to it too.
It's the G Sensor. Give it a shake and you'll hear it carry on for a few seconds with your ear near the phone.
G-sensor? Not likely
I do not think so. G-sensors are solid-state devices: no moving pieces inside.

Well accelerometer then, it's definately one of the two.
Well, the sensors do have moving parts - but I was fairly sure that those are of microscopic proportions (micromachined silicon).
I would be surprised if it was that.
Perhaps there's a hidden tray inside with a ball-bearing, necessary to run "teeter"
Today the messenger from Vodafone at my house to exchange the HD.
Guess what... the new one made the same noise.
A light resonating noise at the camera area at the back.
The messenger took the new one with him and left me my old one.
Vodafone will get in touch with me he said.
Anybody else experiencing this noise here?
Rattling htc hd
Yes mine does this - I think its the camera.
Take an extreme close up and you will hear the same rattle/click noise as if something drops back in to place following the close up focus...
Rattling noise here too.

HA, i knew that game seemed too lifelike
It's the 3.5 mm socket for your headphones jack, was bugging me for a while and got to the bottom of it. Insert your earphones/headphones jack, noise goes away..
I think you will find that it will be the lens in the camera. As I am sure you know this is an auto focus camera and of course that will need a moving lense body. G-Sensors and accelerometers are the same thing and indeed solid state, or pretty much anyway. It is not the headphone jack and I must say...if the noise bothers you... just don't tap the camera! Simple!
Please FOR THE SAKE OF GOD does your device also make rattling noise when you tape on the camera cover ?? Please we need to know because this issue is getting annoying !!! Its been a month with HD and now I hear a rattling noise whenever i tap on the upper part of the backcover near the camera. I tried with another HD and IT DOES THE SAME THING
I emailed HTC a week ago about the problem and they responded by saying "The rattling sound shouldn't be any problem" which makes it sound like they know the Touch HD makes the rattling noise
Please could you share your experience here ?! I need to know if I have the right to return it back and ask for replacement. My BlueAngel was as solid as rock
The rattling can be annoying, but I find it's only really noticeable when the phone vibrates.

So you can also hear the rattling when u slap the backcover near the camera ? Is it a fault with the design ? Maybe the camera lens ? I can hear a similar sound when i take shots with the cam ( autofocus maybe ).

I do also hear it when I take shots when the camera starts auto focusing and when lightly tapping the back cover near the camera.
My older Diamond had the same problem.
Just the crap cameras HTC uses.

How pathetic, paying more than 1049$ for this machine and what a crappy built quality... screen bends when taping on it... backcover and usb cracking noise ( also near the volume buttons ) and now that freaking rattling noise.Absolutely crap.....
It must the mechanicals used for moving the lens during focusing.
Today I went to HTC dealer store nearby... I asked for a new device out of the box. Surprisingly, the new device also makes that rattling noise. I tend to believe it was meant to be done that way. Who knows... maybe its an option
just wondering if any one with this phone wouldnt mind holding the phone to there ear whilst the camrea focuses as mine clicks very quietly and just wondering if they all do it or if mines faulty!
Cheers Guys
The camera is a small piece of hardware held in a small magnet driven cage. It moves slightly back and forth when focusing.
but is it suposed to click quietly?
I wondered why my camera made that sound too
Mine's always clicked and I've never had any problems with it - I just figure it's meant to be that way.

Well mine makes no sound at all when i focus, and when i shake the phone (how this issue first came to light) i can barely hear it. Other people however have reported a much louder rattle.
If yours is noticably loud, and/or sounds like gears clicking, perhaps you have a badly mounted camera, and should get it replaced.
ok glad to see other people have herd the noise i guess it just how it is
My Camera makes no clicks when focusing, but ive just deafened myself when holding close to my ear and taking a picture!! that shutter sound is LOUD that close up!!
But if i shake my phone it does rattle.. its just the volume rocker, but also the bottom buttons are a little loose...
Went into the 02 shop and checked with 2 of there HD2 and they do click very quitely like mine
+1 ...

Or how it is meant to function?
A mechanical/moving parts-based focus system will always make noises.
I also can hear the "clicking", more like a distorted sound when focusing to near objects.

I wonder its normal or not, cause I don't realize when taking photo outdoors.
Till I tried in my room which is very quiet & can hear it clearly.
Hope its not a broken mechanism or might just be the focusing of gears.
So far I've never dropped my HD2 nor hard shocking force to it.
Hi,
mine make a slight clic when focusing, but I clearly remember that my old sony W810i make that noise too, for me it seems normal for an autofocus device...
mine had a soft click too. but could'nt be heard when u taking a photo, just by holding near your ear it can be heard.
Every piece of machinery that I have with auto focus makes that kind of sounds - Video cameras, photo cameras, my old Asus P535, so it is PERFECTLY normal.
Sorry for bumping the thread.
I guess then it is normal to have similar (but more quiet) clicking when camera is switched off and you put the phone one the table for example
If you are not very gentle of course
Mine clicks too. Very silent noise. Can hear it not only when using WM, but also in Android, so i presume it's a hardware thing.
Sent from my HD2
The camera lens on the HD2 is likely like alot of smaller camera lenses and CD/DVD drive lenses. Think of a speaker with the voice coil that moves up and down, then replace the speaker cone with a lens. An electromagnet makes it move up and down to focus. The clicking you're hearing is likely the mechanical system hitting either the min or max stop point.
I hear it on mine too, never really bothered me since i understand how they work. Its also why you might hear a slight rattle when the camera is off. The optical system is mounted on very light springs, its going to rattle around when it doesnt have current flowing though the electromagnet to hold the lens stable.
If you have a broken CD/DVD drive tear it apart and check out how the lens is mounted in the optical pickup for a better understanding of the mechanics
Im getting an obvious rattling sound right around where the camera is on the 6P when I tap pretty much anywhere on the phone, front or back, doesnt matter.
I tried to pinch the top right corner between my fingers, pretty hard actually, and then tap on the phone again, and the sound ALMOST goes away. Loose component?
Anyone else have the problem?
Yeah i believe the newest update fixes rattling noises and adds band 12 for tmobile users.. battery improvements too

Same here. Used to have this issue with the N6, many said it was the OIS. Seeing as how this phone lacks OIS, perhaps its a loose component.
I'm hearing this also. I think it's the camera but mine works great no problems at all.
When I owned the iphone 5 it had the same sound and it was the camera module. So no biggie. If I get any problems with the camera I will surely ask for an warranty replacement.

Same here. Anybody tried to replace phone because of that?
I have it too. No biggie as long as it doesn't affect performance. I more worried about the pink hue on lowest brightness setting (adaptive display on)
I decided that it was so loud and obnoxious, I did an RMA on it. Replacement will be here tomorrow. Will see if the new one has the same issue. I would normally open my own phone to fix the issue myself, but with a 3/10 repairability score, Im not likely to touch it. If the second one does it, I guess I'll live with it.
My previous phones all had this except N6. All our iPhones suffer from it. Not sure what it is though
If it helps any my Galaxy s5 has this.. I noticed it after changing from a an S3 that never did, it ended up being normal on the s5, something do with camera something in there jiggles or rattles a bit.. espically if i just shake the phone i can hear it.. never had a problem tho..
I have the same noise in my 6P and I tell you what it is, is the camera auto focus let's I side hitting the body of the phone when you toss it around and when you put it on the table. It should of had more space in between the camera lens and the body of the phone. Because the lens moves when it auto focuses and any camera with auto focus will have some play when you move the phone, because if the moving parts, the space inside the phone around the camera is so o tight, it touches the body. I hope it will not damage the camera with time.
Every phone with a camera will have this. The lens needs a few mm of empty space to move back and forth to focus. It's basic optics. Nothing you can do about it.
I too have this problem. The rattling sound is loud and clear.
As few of the customers are having this issues, I believe it is a manufacturing defect. I will ask for replacement as I can not bare with such issue. Had spent huge money on phone, why should I compromise and get settle? Need Replacement.
Anyone get a replacement for this yet? Is the rattle still there?
I sent back my 1st 6P for a defect in the screen, got my new one yesterday and it's got this rattle everyone here is talking about - I don't remember my first one having this? When I squeeze with a little pressure, it goes away. I called and have a replacement coming, but with EVERYTHING else on the phone being almost perfect, it scares me if this is the normal?? If it is, I'll keep my current 6P and live with the rattle.
I'm on my third 6P now and all three have had this rattle. It's just the camera. I have a N4 in front of me which has a rattle when tapped around the camera, so did the Galaxy Nexus. I'm sure the N5 had it too. N6 didn't, maybe because it had OIS?
I'm sure it is just the camera elements. If you start the camera app and tap there the rattle is almost non existant. Probably because the autofocus is active and holding the optical elements in place.
My 6p doesn't rattle. RMA?

I also have this rattling sound in my Nexus 6P. I tried to investigate it (without tearing it apart) by going to ifixit. If one examines the back portion around the camera, there is a white wire that runs across almost the entire width of the phone (checkout the image here: https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/ZlpUoq3OjhHJsqTo.huge). This wire, I'm not sure if it is glued to the motherboard or body and hence might be the reason behind the rattling noise. I hear this rattle when I gently tap the area around the camera or when I casually keep the phone on a hard surface (without being extremely gentle about it which I believe no one is).
If this wire is lose ( not carefully attached to the metal cover which holds the 3.5mm headphone jack and the front camera ), you might hear it bounce against the metal.
This isn't a problem. I have in my desk my 6P, a OnePlus One, a Nexus 4, an original Moto G and a Nexus 7 2013 and they all do the exact same rattle when I tap them near the camera. The rattles ceases or decreases when I open the camera app and the devices' cameras focus.

I'm pretty sure the camera makes this sound. I've had 2 6P's and they both made this noise when I either tapped on the phone or go to put it down on a table.
Dear All,
I would like to have your Opinion on the Following.
I believe my Phone has bad build quality. Google say this is normal and they will not exchange it.
I would like the opinion of the community on the following topic.
I*have encountered 2 problems with my Nexus 6P:*
Problem 1: clicking sound coming from camera if dropped lightly on bed or sofa, or if shaken (most likely inferior camera module) sound might come from autofocus but persists if camera is on.
Problem 2: Creeking sound and noticeable give and bending if pressure is applied to back panel, just underneath the fingerprint scanner. This I can tolerate from a plastic phone but not from a 699€ device. most likely the adhesive is applied badly and the creaking sound happens when the backplate of the phone springs back into place.
Admittedly minor complaints but still substantial build quality issues.
I created a youtube Video to illustrate my complaint but I can not post this yet as I am a new user. ***tu.be/f0Kf13dECFI
I dont have any of those, and i agree, even tho its really minor problems, its sad if google dont want to exchange

Almost every phone has this tickling sound coming from camera. Try it your self, hit soft with your hands your phone near camera when device locked and also try that when trying to focus in camera app, then this sound stops. It's because camera sensor.

I agree that most phones have this rattle, however with mine it seems to be getting worse, I have tried it with the camera on and it still makes the noise. I have talked to google about it and they say it is the gyroscope and that this is normal. However if it is normal why do other phones not make this sound.
Anyway the bigger Issue is the bad quality of the adhesive in the back panel. The creeking sound is disturbing as it always happens even if I am only holding it in my hand. One day this thing will just fall apart.
Helloooo everyone. I only have one question, want to confirm or debunk something with the wider group of people. I may be just over reacting but thats just the jewish part of me considering the rma or a refund, kidding, lol. Whenever I shake my phone by the ear I can hear a lil something being loose in the case of my g6. Do You also experience the same thing? Can it truly be the autofocus thingy, or something else?
I don't hear anything when I shake my phone. Is it your phone, or do you have your phone in a case? If so, have you tried removing and shaking both separately?
Sent from my LG-LS993 using Tapatalk
Well, it happens with a firm shake, and the vibration inside is very delicate. Appreciate the feedback
It could be the OIS on the main camera. I don't hear a shaking but my hearing isn't that good either lol
It's the camera stability, it's perfectly normal. If you put your ear next the the camera and shake the phone quickly you should hear it. Also try it while the camera app is open and the stability is working, you shouldn't hear anything.
Damn, I can hear it just the same with the camera app.

It's OIS, or optical image stabilization.
Ok. Thank You all for help! I get real concerned really easy. I only bought my G6 a few days ago. If it wasnt for my 4yo daughter pushing the sim needle into the sound cancellation mic hole on top during my brief absence in the room right after I brought the thing home Id be completely chill rofl. )
Sorry to reply years later, but I just dropped my G6 and then tested it, and shook it hard, and noticed same rattling lol. I took my fiancé's iPhone that also has OIS etc, iPhone 6S that is, and although it sounds tinier, the rattle is still there.
The reason why some owners don't notice the rattle and some do, is because it solely depends on how hard they're shaking their phone AND the direction or way they're shaking it. That is all there is to it.
Your phone is awesome and not broken, at least when it comes to this. You might have a totally different phone by now lol!
Cheers!
