No bench but OUR experience - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM Development

We should quote our personal experiences with the different ROM`s...
Yes it will be a subjective assessment of a ROM but it will help everyone which ROM is worthy to betested because it takes hours to set up a new rom with all progis, e-mail and co.

yes, agree with you.

I think this thread is intended to be a shared experience of different ROMs not a subjective Top 10 Chefs. If you still want do do this you should at least justify your choices because there are a lot of things to consider. Also, this is very dependent on everyone's personal preferences and expectations of what a good ROM should be like so I don't think it's fair to do this.
So far, I flashed all the official ROMs and the following customs: Holy Grail v.5 and Multilang 1.5 from Dutty and now I'm running Artemis 2.9b from Sternas.
I cannot really compare these against each other because they are based on different versions of Manilla or Windows but I can definetely say that all of them are better than the official ROMs.
The reason behind my current ROM is because I wanted to try a winmo 6.5.5 version, I studied the most popular threads, I decided to go with Artemis first and I ended up very happy with it. It's very fast, smooth and doesn't appear to have any important issue. If you prefer some more cutomization I recommend you try Seiya's mods which I find amazing and works like a charm with this ROM - see post #1445:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=612580&page=145

This thread is doom for closure. Subjective opinions are not allowed, and you just stated in your post it was. What would be good is if someone with a private site or blog would do this then you have no rules.

Generally speaking - the new rom´s with 368 MB must be more performant than the others or ?

No, not at all.
More RAM only helps when what you have is not enough, but since it's pretty much impossible to fill the 448MB RAM, 576MB RAM do not improve anything.

Aha ....and when a rom starts with a nbh file more than 250 MB and would guess that the other one wih 130 MB to installl are faster - because of the space ?

I think the most that can be done is to make a list of all the features a particular rom has in comparisson to a stock rom. For example, what Manila tweaks and add-ons are used, what extra programs and tools are on it, has it a autoinstall feature (so setting up a rom doesn't take hours ) etc. etc.
In addition, one can add some (verified!!) bugs a rom has.
Subjective assessment isn't really a guidline. When I read this forum I have the impression that (as it is with almost everything in the world that men are looking for) the experience of a user is easily influenced by what "the community" and the voices sounding from the community are shouting. What one should look for is a guideline that will facilitate the autonomous decission proces of a user. Subjective assessments mostly frustrate this proces.
BTW I love Miri's 6.5.x rom. It's fast, stable etc. (makes no sense)

Why the need for dozens of ROMS?

My understanding is that a cooked rom is a rom that has lots of bit's taken out and then cabs etc put back to make the HD2 run with better performance etc.
But there are so many roms on here, that it has become confusing as to which rom to put on my device. Also what happens when a new legit rom from HTC comes out - doesnt that mean that all the cooking starts again and we end up with thousands of roms?
I would have thought that the additional software installations after installing a new ROM to get the phone in a decent state would put most people off lol.
This is not a dig btw - i have installed a cooked rom, but i think the forum needs to be maybe reshaped a little more i.e. another category with each rom version.
Agree. Would like to see some kind of categories, maybe one for "Featured ROMs", they are cool, gives a hint of what will come, but they might be unstable. One category for ROMs really close to stock, but with minor changes...
i totall agree.. i am a new member as you can see on my number of posts.. i would really like to get to know which rom update is for what and which works best with htc hd2.
need help.
Just do some more research and find what you like.. and use it very often.
Custom Roms are for everybody and each chef has his own kitchen.. and receipe. Someone goes for speed the other for stability.. and some other chef again for a better layout.
I agree sometimes it is difiicullt to see what features are added and to compare which rom suites your needs best, but you could filter it all for you self. Select all Roms that have your interest and filter down to 2 or 3 Roms... then flash those 2 or 3 roms and try them for a few days. You will able to tell which one is best for you
It's up to you which one you choose.. so for lazy people who do not want to search.. stick to the shipped Roms

+1 for this one.
It's ur own thing!
Well, All these roms are the personal preference of the maker with some feedback and input from the users. The only way is to decide is read the descriptions and perhaps see what apps are included and mainly, which version of windows mobile (all 6.5 but some the newer 6.5.3(?) version with the taskbar at the bottom and some fingerfriendly stuff), which version of manilla (2.5.1922 is the newest with a document tab but some bugs), etc.
The rest is just a matter of personal preference and trying.
It has always been like this and it works wonderfully... newbs that come here and say this kind of stuff should first try to understand how this forum works and WHY there are so many roms..
Like i said - i agree on the principle of it - but why not create sub forums with rom versions etc so the layout is easier. Being called a newbie because i havn't posted many threads is rather insulting
I really love the way it is now. It gives you freedom to choose, and make your device more custom. I would however like to see alot of cooks go together and create "the perfect rom".. Some cooks go for stabillty, others for speed, someone for visuals. Combine all those chefs recepies and you would have one fantastic rom i believe
I agree with Da9L!
If you spend more time with xda-devs you will see a structure. If i need a WM 6.5.3 ROM i search only for the Sys.Build (28xxx). Very easy.
1. I like having the choice between many different ROMs..you simply have to see what fits your needs the best.
2. Most people stick to their favorite cook because they have similar "taste" and usually you stick with it.
we have many 5-star cooks here and its hard to single out ONE great ROM. There is no universal solution so take a close look at the ROM description and see whats added and removed, look at the bugs and changelogs, the builds and decide if it might be your taste.
i love changing roms in search of features speed and new layouts.. but i always forget which rom was on which version when i last tried it . and now especially with new and different versions of manila and htcsense it is getting a bit of confusing...
I wish if there is a single chart of all roms where they keep atleast some basic information...
like
Name of ROM -- LAST UPDATED-- OS VERSION-- MANILA Version -- Changelog etc
something like this (except its for ANDROID ROMS)
http://db.androidspin.com/android_build_information.asp
tell me what you guys think of this....

True...
But with a menu, you have categories. "Main meals" (full featured rom?) "starters" (clean rom without manila or any addons?)
You just have to have a look at this forum

You just had to read and learn
the thread title is very misleading based on what the TS has to say
in any case, the current layout is fine. i do not think it is very "efficient" to keep going down sub-menus
It would be nice to have a XDA market were al ROMS and stuff can be rated, that would certainly sort things out
Personally I wish there were more ROMs! Like someone said, this is how its always been, this is how it is, and this is how it will always be.
It would be good if the chefs stuck to the official thread naming scheme.
I was gonna provide a link to it, but cant find it now

The only one that can rate the best rom for you is you
What might be the case
Many of the ROM's have no layout customizations and vary
often only a little in included applications, tweaks/driver patches.
If a new user installs a couple of ROM's , chances
are differences aren't all that big, and the question arises, what's the point ?
If one looks at the older devices, one can see an almost vulgair
choice of styled, tweaked and pimped beyond recognition ROM's.
I mean the ROM's where you open the default games folder and there's 10 games, 19 great themes to choose from, 6 clocks, and what's more.
The fact those ROM's aren't available (yet) could be strange to people relatively new to XDA.
Maybe it's something all different
Edit : forgot to mention Xanitechs Pandora ROM which has "styling" (works like a charm for me)

T01A Rom may be have a little bit difference from TG01 Rom ,so we need cedesmith release a tgtool version for japanese rom or need cedesmith release source code of tgtool and some one can modify it ,after that we can use it for japanese rom.
The japanese rom file has a tsd (toshiba docomo) extension not tsw(toshiba worldwide) extension. http://update.toshibamobile.com/upda..._SP50_wm65.exe

Yes please !
But i'm sure some optimizations could be done!
Moreover, it would be so great to have sense ui and all htc's programs working on our phone!
We just have to wait now!
as many bugs had been fixed by toshiba, the main purpuse of an cooked rom is an newer build of windows mobile. wm6.5.3 or WM6.5.5.
Finding a way to use htc g-sensor softs on the tg01 would be great too.
What do we expect from a cooked ROM?

I start:
I agree with the htc g-sensor emulation plus:
- Null (or leave as a option) the silly limitations on USB and Wifi, when battery is under 20%
- Null (or leave as an option) the screen off when calling
- Add essential camera features as White balance
What do you think?
the best thing would be if there are two kind of rom....
one fully equiped and one clean rom....
the fully equiped rom should have sense and other htc apps and some little tweaks like 1ghz or hd2 driver patch...also we have to focus the ram usage and the free memory....i think that are the major things..
the clear version have to be very very fast and with a lot of free ram!!!
also i think we could remove all unusefull toshiba stuff like wifi-app or the stripes menu....no one uses these apps!!!
20% lbattery imitation needs totally scapped i agree there

it would be amazing if we could have a clean, brand free ROM from which to build our personal apps & settings.
i can see the benefits of many different things people are asking, but we all want so much & we all want different things
so if at all possible it would surely be best all round if the first ROM to be produced was pretty much the same as the latest toshiba release, but with zero branding & pre-installed apps & as much RAM & capacity left free as possible
please don't think i want to dampen the enthusiasm of those of you skilled & knowledgable enough to make these ROMs a reality, nor am i trying to be scornful to those of you who have made specific requests for widgets, features & applications
the ROM idea pretty much started out of the call quality issue, that was kinda our hook 'which cook was gordon ramsey (man) enough to fix the flawed genius of the TG'
well sorry but that cook works for Toshiba - the sound is fixed
so now rather than a problem we want fixed, we want a blank canvass of a ROM to make our own
basic noob's like me want a stripped out device with no clutter
you gamers want rotation & motion senors
you htc-afficcionados want your fav htc features
but we can't all have everything unless we all get the same template of a ROM to begin our own journeys into customization
also... well... i guess the cooks are used to it.... but it can't be a big motivation to hurry up having dozens of people all asking for different things...

Adam, Cooks,
Perfectly said. Absolutely in agreement.
I also think would fit well with the fundamental tenet of software development - baby steps - test every step and validate with the client before moving on. Is only a modern variation of the carpenters' dit about 'measure twice and cut once' from the dawn of time, but all the more true for that.
A start point 'vanilla' stripped down ROM, preferably with some step by step instructins for the uninitiated among us to learn and build from would be the perfect start point.
Really hope that the clear experts here can help with that ?

[REQ] Windows Mobile 6.5.3/5 STOCK ROM

Hey guys,
does anyone have a stock rom of the latest winmo?
I've upgraded to the latest UK O2 Rom, 1.72 but I'd like the new UI with the larger buttons, i've started to get my claw of a hand round my HD2 but hitting small little buttons is a bit difficult. So if someone knows where there is a Stock Rom i'd be really appreciative.
Many Thanks,
Luke.
There is no 6.5.x stock ROM now....
HTC support has always sucked at providing the latest software for their handsets.
There is a WM6.5.X stock ROM...but it is not for Leo. I think you can stuck with just WM6.5 ROMs, unless you want to flash a kooked ROM, which is usually far better than a stock ROM.
personalment I think that the stock roms are better than any cooked rom, every single cooked rom that I've tried have some errors or bug and I have tried almost all vercions

Yeah, agreed. Cooked ROMs are fun to play around with, but in the long run my experience has been you get better stability and battery life from HTC's own ROMs. Some of the stuff from telcos like Vodafone and T-Mobile seems really bad, but the clean ROMs straight from HTC have been the best in my experience.
Sadly though, doesn't seem like HTC is doing anything on the HD2 anymore. Anyone ask them about the next ROM update and whether it might be 6.5.x? It's been basically four months since the last update... I really hope 6.5.x is being planned for the HD2. I never expected the HD2 to be upgradeable to WP7, but they have to give it 6.5.x at least especially since it doesn't look like HTC will have any other flagship WM devices until WP7.

Actually they are all pretty stable, it is more likely the 20 incompatible apps you install and expect to work. Why not give feedback to the chefs about these issues.
Dont forget that to port an OS not designed for a particular device and also make work any OEM UI etc is no easy task, its never going to be perfect (and there's no such thing as perfect in any OS, UI, device) Even if there is a stock WM6.5.x the cooked ROMs will still far excell the stock ROM.
Personally I cook my own ROMs that way I can customize it just how I want, if you think you can do a better job than the other chefs by concentrating on stability then why not learn to cook yourself.

Yup mods are tons in Leo, and yet this thread is still open!?
Why would you close this thread? I know cooked ROMs are really popular, but is there something wrong with having a different opinion?
well I think that we have freedom of give our opinions about it, I respect what you say, but to me does not interest me if the cooked roms are 6.5 or 6.5.x , i dont care about how fast it is, or memory or consumption batery, if they are out of errors or bugs, i think that all roms are sufficiently fast.

hey, and i dnt knw if this is what you mean
but there is a clean win mo 6.5.3 rom out by l3v5y.
HOWEVER, it is a COOKED rom BUT comes in 3 "flavours"
there is a simple win mo 6.5.3 rom no sense ui...which is what i think your after
theres a lite and a full version (with htc sense)
i'd post the link but XDA is stopping me because im a new user
so try

hpe it helps
i've tried almost all of the cooked roms and though there are some fantastic features above and beyond what you get from stock rom, there is allways a bug or 2 that dissappoint.
and no, i don't have 20 or so incompatible apps. in fact i don't install anything until i'm happy that the rom is stable enough (which it never is).
despite that, i have much respect for all the cooks! this place wouldn;t be here if it wasn't for them!!

You aren't serious are you? Not only are there thousands of threads like this, but that is also a very stupid question if you think about it, as if there was a 'best ROM' everyone would be using it.
Having said that, I would advise sticking to a CM7 ROM for speed and stability, in my experience Sense simply isn't as fast as it's made out to be.
use a miui rom....

When I was typing the Title I didn't get any similar topic to that. Well you see there are many ROM but some of them are better than the others but like I said I don't have the time to try every single ROM to check it for my self thats why I am asking.
For me TBD Sansation XL v3.5 themed or stock. FAST AND STABLE.

You didn't see a single thread remotely like this? Are you f**king kidding me? You clearly spent less than 5 milliseconds searching, otherwise you would have found (I would think literally) hundreds of 'best ROM' threads.
I think any reply to this can only be subjective. There can never be a 'best rom', only a personal favorite. I don't particularly like sense so I use Dorimanx's latest High End Rom. Someone who likes sense will disagree and someone else would say the latest ics build.
For me Dorimanx's rom is the fastest and most stable I've found...I'd recommend it.
Sign a contract and get a new phone...
The best rom is the rom do you like it most. Start installing different roms and see what is good enough for you. Cheers!
I think there is a rule that says not to post such posts...better read the rules before, or the sticky's...
Anyway, as bangorip said this is subjective and depends from lot's of parameters...
From my experience, use wp7 as the standard everyday rom and with dual boot try sd for android but not a sense rom ( it's not as fast in the sd as in nand-my opinion) also if you want only android in nand try this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1316632

Yes a little more searching would have showed you that you are hardly the first to ask this question. By asking what is the best rom for you that's like asking what is the best outfit for you, or the best car for you. It's impossible for anyone to tell you what is best for you.
Now there are a lot of options from Sense to AOSP to CM7/CM9 to MIUI to Touchwiz and so on.
Your refusal to sample them all speaks to your impatience, this is typically a developer forum so I suggest doing your own research and not asking anyone here to tell you what is best. Experimenting will be the only way to tell you what is best but I can list some things about the different roms
CM7: Fast and stable GB, everything works here.
AOSP: Same as CM7 but with not as many options, just straight Android to the core
CM9: ICS roms, still in the early builds but with almost everything working. A few issues arise here and there so you may want to wait until deveolpment furthers
MIUI: Huge options for customization and everything works (in GB of course, the MIUI ICS roms are at the same level as CM9)
Sense: You have Sense 2.1 Froyo with everything working (except 720p I believe) Or you can move to GB with Sense 2.1-3.5 with everything except video recording working properly. Sense naturally is slower though as it is pretty resource heavy. But the efforts of the devs have brought Sense 3.5 to near CM7 speed and usability.
Dorimanx's rom
New Dorimanx's rom is the best for you. Witch i tried...
@chrisrj28 that was an answer I was looking for.

1) Really don't understand this questions.
2) Depends on your ROM/Kernel, this phone runs a 1st gen snapdragon so some 3D games will lag no matter what, but Temple Run shouldn't, which ROM are you on?
3) Don't understand this question either.
No worries about your English, 2nd languages are really hard, but try to clarify these questions a bit more if you can.

1) I don't know which specific ones you mean, but the hardware of the HD2 is simply too old to run the newer ports well, like Jellybean and such.
2) Again, not 100% sure what you're asking here, do you mean why are that chef's ROMs better than others? If so, there's no telling. It could be his kernel and driver combination or better base or using better code and not just straight porting a ROM with broken drivers, but if you find a good chef stick with him
what the best rom

I haven't used an HD2 in a while, but try out some ICS SD roms and see which one you like.

I think he meant to ask "Why don't all chefs meet and combine their works to make a best rom?"
In fact, it seems like a good idea, despite being hard (impossible?) to apply.
Imagine having one ROM that is perfect. Indeed "Imagine".

Well this is no "perfect" ROM, and every ROM has different preferences and settings and UI and stuff, but they all share source so you can cherry pick what you want for your ROM if you want.
It is an impractical idea.

I beg to differ. Take PACman for example, it's an AOKP, a Paranoid and a CM10 ALL in 1 ROM. Before the amazing work of Xylograph, people had to choose between the three types. Now you can have them all.
And if you think GUI would be a problem, it could be a "perfect ROM" with an add-on section. While the main rom is just a base, or a bare-bone. And there aren't really that many kinds of GUI; if you think about it, it's simply sense, miui or stock. (afaik)
Still, it's an imaginary rom .

That was my point, that chef cherry picked what he wanted from all three sources. So for YOU it might be perfect, but it is subjective in nature.
As far as the UI is concerned, you can have Sense (which is an entire framework, not just a launcher), TouchWiz, MotoBlur, Xperia, that Dell Stage UI that never really took off, MIUI, AOSP, and then all of the various themes and launchers, so it is really limitless.
some chefs like to use inverted gapps, some like to use soft keys with certain images, the choices are endless.
I guarantee you the ROM you are referring to is missing some features that other ROMs might have, but that chef cherry picked the features he liked from those sources.

Because of the old Adreno 200 GPU, it's just too old. For most games with at least 40 FPS, buy phone with Adreno 205, or mali-400, or powerVR.

No HWA, so no it isn't the best ROM for gaming at all. The difference in gaming and web browsing between 2.3 (no HWA) and 4.0+ (HWA) is unreal.
