I've installed Vibrant6 and one of the things that was not included was the memo app. The memo app I noticed in a nandroid backup appears that it would be in the /system/app folder.
I used Root Explorer and copied over the memo.apk, but I doesnt' appear to show up in the app drawer nor in the phone app when you are trying to take a memo while on the phone.
Am I nuts?

No, your not nuts...I noticed Root Explorer has done this to me in the past too. Its usually only when copying over apps that have been in a system folder. Anyway, here's how I do it everytime(i use this a lot)
1. Put memo.apk on internal sdcard
2. Go in terminal(download if you don't have)
3. Type 'cp_/sdcard/memo.apk_/system/app'
Enter(the underscores are spaces)
4. Don't exit terminal
5. Type 'reboot'
Enter
6. When it restarts it should be in the drawer.
I'll give it a try so basically what you are saying is to use terminal opposed to Root Explorer.
I'm pretty good at console, but I was figuring it would just copy right over. Heck I even made sure the permissions are the same. Go figure. LOL
I'll give it a try tomorrow and thanks for the heads up that Root Explorer could be the cause of the problem.
sure thing, have fun
The problem I'm seeing now is when I load up the Memo.apk and the Memo.odex file into the /system/app/ folder my phone boots and then all of the sudden I get a black screen and the soft touch buttons are lit up.
I figured it was a permission thing at first so I loaded up my nandroid copy and then tried again changing the permissions to the same as everything else in the folder.
I had an issue with my fat fingers so I tried the old favorite SU File Manager and everything copied over fine, but I'm not sure if its the SU File Manager causing issues or something else.
Honestly I just forgot the line on how to change the system directory to read/write so I tried to short cut it via an app.
Where does the market save the .apk files I download? In which folder?
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
On HTC desire, I find market apk's in /sdcard/download/. Usually after a failed install, so I am guessing those files get deleted after install. Should be the same on HD2.
They used to be there in /sdcard/downloads, none of the latests builds I've used leave the APKs there tho, I used to be able to search this folder and install any apps stuck at 100% download or failed, but they dont go there anymore.
So dunno where they gioing now.
I cannot find em anywhere...I use the mdjs desire hd version 4.4 and i cannot find those files...

id love to know where they are!!!
i hate redownloading them each time i start a new build from scratch. UGH!! i have to find all those downloads again and updates.
use root explorer. open it up and you should be at the first dir, their is a folder called "data", tap it, now tap on a folder called "app". this should be all your market apps. tap and hold whatever app you want, choose copy and navagate back to first page and scrole down to your "sdcard", tap it and paste your app where-ever you want to copy it to. this is where i found my apps. hope that helps yall.
Let me see...

The apps mite be in a different location on your Android build, but on my build BlueTopia HD Beta 2 by cmylxgo, this is where they are, and they are the install program. Copy one to where-ever you want it then tap on it while still in root explorer, it should ask if you want to install, view or cancel. I've found that there is one thing bad about doing this, Market don't see them as being installed and won't tell you if there is an update for that program if there is one.
Hmmmm....I use the jdms 1.6.2 and the mdeejays revolution hd 1.2 but still cannot locate them anywhere...

They are saved in /data/system/app or /data/app
Use root explorer, it should be under /data/app. If you use ES file explorer, you will see an empty /data directory.
I'Ve installed JDMS 1.6.2 and found them in the same place as i said, they have the little green Android guy next to them. Those are the whole app. Tap on one and youll see, it'll ask if you want to install view or cancle. You have to use root explorer!
Another option is to use Titanium Backup from Market. It is free. You can back up your installation to your SD card and install again later or for a different Android build.
data/app/
data/app-private/
system/app/
if you have apps 2 sd, i dont recall the name of the folder.
what file browser are you useing? some wont show protected files.
All "apk" user installed end up in /data/app. system/app is just all the Android installed apk's for that build. data/app-private is normally empty. If you are just looking to save all the apps you have downloaded and installed, then you need to backup the "app" folder in the data folder. But remember this will not be visible unless you have root access.
Good work guys...thank you so much.

Copy my paid aps to my wife
Now I can copy my apps that I paid for and copy them to my wifes phone and now she has them too. Great way to make apps cheaper.

a good app you might want to look at then would be appmonster or appmonster pro. the free version will backup apps to SD card, restore apps from SD card, quick uninstall where as the pro version does multiple version backups, gives access to extended options like APP2SD, cache, permissions, scan SD card for install-files, batch install (i believe) & even shares app-links via Facebook, Twitter, eMail. i have created a little stock pile of about 1200 or so apk's in the past year or 2.
I know there are a ton of applications that do the same but i personally like this program & suggest it to a lot of ppl who own a android phone.

I'd advise you to download "appmonster".
This makes a backup of all ur apps as .apk files! (folder:appmonster)
Works great!
Running cm7. Had a bad glitch so I did factory reset. Now I can't really install the apps I already paid for like quickoffice. Market doesn't even give me the option to purchase or install it again. What now?
Probably an issue with the newer market. Search around the forums and you'll see several fixes for this (uninstall market updates, pixel density change, etc).
go to manage apps, and uninstall updates for the Market. If that works as it did for me with Nightly 166, I used ES File Explorer to rename MarketUpdater.APK file. I'm sure you'll find this suggestion somewhere else.

You can also uninstall the marker updater app and it will go away. No need to rename the apk file and leave it on your Nook.
OK!!!! So now that we have Gingerbread, I am wondering if there is anyway that we can remove the bloatware without having to flash an entire ROM??? I am not interested in freezing them, but instead complete removal to have the free space.
Any suggestions?
I used ES File Explorer which is free. Go into it's settings, and there should be an option to turn on Root Explorer and to Mount File System. Then just tap the favorites star, select phone, then browse to system/app and delete the apk and odex files for the bloat.
The root explorer function seems a bit buggy on ES, only would activate once. If I unactivated and try to reactivate says test fail. Works again after rebooting the phone though. The nice thing about ES is it shows the icons for the apks so you know exactly what you are deleting as some of the names aren't real descriptive.
I used Titanium Backup to remove Sprint Bloatware. Open TB > Backup / Restore > Select App > Uninstall.
Just delete them in 7zip/winrar. System/apps
Yeah, with the ES File Explorer, I notice that if I set the root option and leave the application, when I go back in...it only show one phantom folder. I have to go in to settings, uncheck it...exit the app...then go back in and recheck it. Other than that 'bug', it works fine.
So i have the paid root explorer, and I go to system, app, then i mount r/w but where are these bloat apps? i can't seem to find asphalt or any other ones? are they hidden under different names?
I would like to delete;
ashpalt
telenav
nascar
free hd game(?)
do I need all share?
qik video
sprint tv
Personally, I use the SDX Stock App removal app.
Simple and easy to use. You can back up any app and you can also use it to restore.
I'm sure root explorer is just as good though but I stick to what I know

Yeah, thanks, but I wrote that is where I am going. I dont see anything labeled asphalt, telenav...
found them in data/app.
hey all iv noticed this a lot with the stock 2.2 rom on my POV Mobii tegra 2 (advent vega rebrand).
e.g i uninstalled a game called jelly defence, then tried to install an updated version of it. the install fails saying aplication not installed.
ok so i then tried to reinstall the first version i had working on the tablet, and that also fails to install saying again application not installed..
why would this be happening? iv noticed that it happens on a fair few number of apps that i install, then uninstall, then try to install again and they fail to install.
installation is done via apk file from sd card. even tried over wifi and still same error.
I know this might sound rude, but did you try Google?
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4226132/application-not-installed-error-on-android
ahh, could be something to do with the certificates or the AndroidManifest.xml file.
where is this file located so that i can check its permissions?
This might be a tough nutt to crack...
"AndroidManifest.xml" file is inside .apk files.
ok i managed to fix the problem. i mounted my sd card to the pc with card reader, and in the android.secure folder there was a file called smdl2tmp1.asec , i deleted that and now the app installs fine. got both jelly defence and few others installed with no issues.
strange how i cant see that folder on the tablet itself because its hidden. need an app to see the folder and its contents directly on the tablet so i can delete it again if needed.
Yeah, folders and files with a dot infront of their names are invisible.
It's a Linux thing!
Glad you got that sorted out!
is there no file manager app that can see these files directly on the tablet?
Just tried "iFileManager" app I got with stock tablet software and it can see hidden files/folders.
I also tried Root Explorer and it can see hidden files/folders, but this is a paid app.
Astro File Manager can also see hidden files/folders, but you need to go into Preferences-->Look and Feel-->and enable "Show Hidden Files" option.
Maybe your current file manager app also has such an option?
Hope I helped, and don't forget to give a thanks!
ahh, i have stock ifilemanager, but i dont use it, i use ES File Explorer since i can access my LAN shares with it easily over the wifi. will give ifilemanager a go in few mins time.
thanks again.
just checked ifilemanager can see the folder but it cant see any of the file which are inside the folder.
Just checked some "hidden" folders myself on my tablet.
Some have files / sub-folders inside and some don't.
Not all folders need to have files inside.
but when i check the folder on the pc via sdcard reader, there are files in the folder.
cant see them directly on the tablet, but when connected to pc i can see the files in exact same location.
