Text input and "£" sign? - HD2 General

Hi,
Is there any way to make it easier to insert the "£" symbol when typing using the HTC keyboard? At the moment I have to press 12#, then 1/2 before I can find the "£" symbol. It would be so much easier if it was on a long press of one of the other keys on the keyboard, eg if you long press "f" you get a "$" symbol, or long press "s" you get an "@" symbol.
Cheers

Have a look for
"Currency Symbols for Keyboard.cab"

Single Handed Input method?

I am looking for a better way of one handed use. I would wonder pretty much if not someone else has thought about that as well...
Isn't there an input method that works by just using the jog dial? I mean something like:
UP - change current letter to next one (so change from "a" to "b", "c", ...)
DOWN - just vice-versa
RIGHT - add one character
LEFT delete one character
FITE - enter
Why I want that? To have a method to select a contact for a call by just using one hand in the car...
Any suggestions?
O god no
Better would be :
Keyboard on-screen, use the jog-button to move a 'cursor' over the screen. for example a key on the keyboard turns blue if the cursor is on top. Press the jog-button to select...
then you can move around on the keyboard and 'tap' key's onehanded..
ImagiNet Finger Clix will help you

Like you normally do with the stylus on the keyboard: With the backspace key
It's just alike typeing on the keyboard with the stylus, the only thing you cant't do is tap 'start' or 'ok'
Finger Clix is FREE to Imate users BTW..... www.clubimate.com to download.

Hehe, Johan, I think you missed my point, mate I want to use only my left hand while driving or walking... no stylus possible then...
I find it surprising that I seem to identify this as a problem while you all seem to be pretty happy the way you do it... am I missing something there?

OK, Johan, you're right there, mate! I installed it and played a bit with it. Yes, I can use it with just one hand, but puh... that browsing through contacts is not really a solution for me. I've got around 3,000 contacts in Outlook and they only way to use T9 is - again - either the fingers on the screen or the pen which both require more than just one hand. I was hoping I could actuallu select the keys via d-pad...

8125 - entering symbols other than using the shift key

Has anyone been able to activate the symbols menu from the keypad that appears on the space bar key? It would be nice to enter a back slash without opening the onscreen keyboard.
Thanks in advance.

Explain, please.
Do you mean without opening the sliding hardware keyboard? You said "onscreen"; I think you mean with the onscreen keyboard.
on the hardware keyboard there is no backslash, so you have to use the software keyboard. I too didn't find a way to easily enter some "symbol" mode...
if you type the forward slash and still have the unit in symbol mode and hit space, it will change it to a back slash and then cycle through more symbols if you continue to hit space in symbol mode.
I thought of something like that... The only problem with that technique is, that you don't know which symbol is on which key (/\ is quite obvious of course ). Much nicher would be some table that pops up with symbols and you can chose there (communicator had that)
symbol mode
if you type the forward slash and still have the unit in symbol mode and hit space, it will change it to a back slash and then cycle through more symbols if you continue to hit space in symbol mode.
How do you get it into symbol mode once you slide open the keyboard? Typed forward slash then hit space and it moved forward. Just want to type a backslash without opening the onscreen keyboard.
Thanks in advance.
Hold the Button with the red dot while typing space bar. As with the whole keyboard, the red dot button accesses the red labels of the keys... so the "Sym" is written in red on the space bar, abviously this means it's accessed the same way.
Didn't work the first time. Got it now. Tyvm.

keyboard issue

Hi all,
Not sure it is a problem or not.
Each key in HD keyboard got 2 meanings (e.g. q/1, w/2, a/!, S/@, etc).
When I press the 'shift/CAPS' button, it will change to 'Shift' and I can type ONE large capital char.
If I press it twice, it will change to 'SHIFT/CAPS' and I can continue to type in large capital.
but how can I type ONE number without press '.,123' first?
'Shift' can just type ONE large capital char.
The number above the alphabet are for illustration only
Long press on the key will give you the number/symbol.
I believe you can find that kind of info in the manual.......
Haaa.......I just long press the Shift key......

Things you probably don't know about your Xperia

Tell us some things that you recently discovered this or the previous month, but never knew that the Xperia was capable of (respond to this thread).
poetryrocksalot's things:
1) The Xperia's shift key can be used in correspondence to the D-pad to select text or files. (I didn't know that the CAP's symbol was actually a shift key)
2) The center button on the Xperia's optical joystick/D-pad can be used to open context menus in file explorer, total commander, resco explorer, spb diary, and just about anything etc. All you have to do is highlight the field of text and press and hold the D-pad. You will see the circular animation indicating that a context menu is about to be open.
3) Your Xperia's mono speakers leave a 1.5 seconds hissing sound after you press a key tone or activate the speakers. This causes your X1 to lose a lot of battery especially if you enable the following: keypad tones, screen tap tones, hardware button tones. Not all Windows Mobile Phones have the hissing sound. The Xperia is one of a few phones with this imperfection (test your other Windows Mobile phones and report here).
comeradealexi's things
4) If you want to select text in opera you have to hold down your finger on the screen and turn text selection ON.
When making a phone call for example i wanted to ring "James" all i would have to enter is 526 to show keyboards "JAM" and the contact appears!
very usefull and VERY efficient
The same for contacts.
Anyway you also have shortcuts in emails,
just press&hold "H".
All the shortcuts there are invoked by press&hold.
You can also navigate through inboxes and messages without going out,
just with navipad.
oTToToTenTanz's things
5) If you dial with hardware keyboard you do not have use this "shift" key. It gets the numbers in instantly. I guess it is not much of a new thing though...
Bronx's things:
6) ok. mine is quite good. when You open Your message inbox, type on hard keys or onscreen keys any info You are looking for, contacts, numbers even text from message bodies. It is automatically searched for You. just try it - quite useful when You have more than few hundred messages just like me.

The optical button is the same functionality as a left-mouse click. Holding it is a right-mouse click.

Yeah that's what i said in my post too. It surprised me too, and now I love my Xperia so much more because I don't rely on touch screen anymore...it's amazing...
But the way worded that sounds better than the way I said it in my post.
Kudos
Holding space on the hardware keyboard leads to ". "
I don't know if this is stock or FingerKeyboard enabled it somehow, but I like it for typing emails.

Wow on my Xperia it doesn't work. I want that feature! Actually I want to be able to use the "hold" function as an auto input for function symbols.
Does anyone know how to tweak for this to work?

Didnt WhyBe say something about "FingerKeyboard enabled it somehow"
You can customise the àü key ...for example I have £, % and _ set up against the H key
So to get "_" I just type "H" and then hit the àü key twice (first time gives me "-" then second makes it "_")
...to get "%" I hit the àü key once more
I have the Euro symbol and several others set up this way too... never have to use the SYMBOL key any more!

Sorry -should have said!
Got this from member Maedox...
Connect your phone in ActiveSync mode to your computer and open \Windows\sym.0409.txt
Each line is representing one hardware key. Each time you press àü it jumps to the next character on the line in that text file.

lol!!! laughed my heart out

How much do you use the slide out keyboard?

So I've had mine for a few weeks now, and I can still count the number of times I've used the physical keyboard on one hand lol. I'm not even sure why. It's fine when I use it, but the onscreen one is just -so- fast and responsive. I can type much much faster with the onscreen one.
On the flip side I like that it's there just in case I need it for some reason (needing to type something really specific, etc).
But yeah, how much do you use it?
anything more than a few words and i whip out the physical board. even if the screen view is locked to portrait.

same here, mainly because for some reason the fact that my phone has a smiley button is hilarious to me. Also, just a little fun fact, the keyboard backlight will turn on when you click on an area to enter text, but otherwise stays off. Nifty, ehhh?
I use my keyboard A LOT. I never entered text using the on screen keyboard, that is, until my screen light decided to start cutting off whenever I slid it out. Now I have to use the on screen.
Me too... I use it almost every day. Just can't seem to get the hang of the soft keyboard.
I use it every day, almost every single time i type something. it is just faster and more accurate.
Anything more than 5 words and I use the keyboard

You have to use the symbol key and then touch the right arrow key on the onscreen keyboard that pops up to get to it - pretty much the same way you would with the onscreen keyboard (&123 key then right arrow)
By the way, in case some don't know this, you can enter the blue (fn) function characters just by holding the physical key just a bit longer. Saves us from having to fiddle with the fn button everytime.

I also found something today. Long pressing the sym can switch input method. In my case, I can switch between English and Chinese. I might just be too retarded to find out earlier ~
