I am coming from a symbian device and using nokia pc suit I am able to use my N97 as a sort of modem, conecting to internet using 3g conection of my cel phone to access internet.
So, is this possible to do in an android enviroment?
Yes this is, but it does require root access. This ability comes in the form of two things, wired tethering, or wireless tethering. I believe Cyanogen's ROM has these features, I do not know for sure as I have not read the feature list or installed it on the N1.. which I don't have yet..
But yes, it is possible.
You can use PdaNet (free for http) without root. Been using it since day one and it is slick! See here:
http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php
Basically there are three options:
1) USB tether.
2) "Wireless tether": share 3G over Wifi. (extreme battery hog)
3) Pdanet
Remarks: 1+2) need root on the N1, but no special drivers on the PC if its sufficiently modern (afaik you need to manually install some drivers for Win XP). 3) needs no root but special software on the PC (mac+win only, probably only certain versions supported)
I'm using 1) daily with the Modaco ROM, works very well.
PS: Modaco ROM is free, Pdanet has a free trial but $$$ if you want https support.
Thanks a lot guys!
Can I ask one last question regarding this issue?
What about bluetooth? Is it possible to do through bluetooth?

I know PdaNet has a Bluetooth option as well as USB.
Great, thanks a lot!!!
Wifi tether also has a BT-PAN option to connect through bluetooth.

I used to be able to tether using my old ROM as well as the "un-official" new ROM versions prior to the recently released ROM update dated 4/09/07.
I use Missing Sync (ver 3.0.2) on OS X, and it would allow me to tether the 8525 using internet sharing set to USB. Now the only way I am able to tether is via the Bluetooth PAN, and even then the connection is spotty at best.
Did the official ROM change the way Internet Sharing works? This is very annoying and any assistance or ideas would be welcome.
I downgraded from the CUSTEL 2.5 WM6 ROM due to Missing sync's inability to sync with it as well as an inability to tether my Mac. Vista using Bootcamp works but Vista isn't my cup of tea...
Soon...
In a couple of weeks time you will have a solution to your problems with Apple OS X and Microsoft Windows Mobile. (Hint: it's not free.)
I am assuming that this would the much anticipated Missing sync update. If only I could shorten the wait... oh well.
Thanks.
Not really. Trade your 8525 for the iPhone!

something must be wrong with your phone because I use Bluetooth pan with internet sharing at work, in my car, at home and it works just fine. I even thought about ditching the Internet at home

I do it too. All the time. Is AWESOME from the car, especially in a a 3G area. (Parked, not driving.)
i can't even connect my 8525 to my mac via bluetooth. it worked once and now the phone won't open up the passcode screen to connect.
edit: my rom is version 1.34.502.3. should i update to a newer one?
I think its the location that I am at that may be to blame. I have a really slow connection via Bluetooth PAN. The same isn't true when using Vista and Internet sharing via USB - that connection is much faster (though it too blanks out at times).
As for connecting to OS X: simply start the Bluetooth setup assistant on the mac and search for "any device". Then select the phone and pair the two. At the very end of the process the Mac will list the services that are available via the phone. One of them will be the shared network.

yeah, it stalls after i select it from the device list. the screen where it gives me the passcode to connect it, it seems like my phone doesn't receive it. not sure. but you think i should upgrade the rom? looks like mine is kinda old.
I'm posting with OSX using my phone right now
delete the bluetooth pairing on the osx machine and on the phone
from osx bluetooth assistant and select any device
if it asks about using the phone as a headset disselect that
if the phone once pairs asks about a serial device do not select that
verify if bluetooth still is on on the phone
goto internet sharing
bluetooth pan
connect
make sure its actually connected to the internet
on the osx machine click the bluetooth icon again and select "join network on ___your phones name____ "
thats it!
sometimes give it a second
if it still doesn't work make sure you don't have some kind of crazy firewall setup
using Custel's 2.5 rom (windows mobile6)

Hi,
Some weeks ago I tryed to use MissingSync for internet sharing with different WM6 versions without success. With official AKU3.3.1 version it works with the USB cable. But battery life is very short with this version.
Regards.
Yes, missing sync does not yet support WM6. Try the "normal" bluetooth pan method described above.
Anyone tried doing OS X tethering with newer versions of the WM6 roms?
I'm currently running vp3G 2.0 (WM6), rom date 5/15/07, radio 1.40.30.00, protocol ver. 32.73.7020.16H
Because I'm working offsite tomorrow, I was hoping to use my phone to tether my laptop to work with VPN on the laptop... and then I can login and out of the timeclock, etc. But trying it from work tonight before I leave, I can't get the bluetooth on my 8525 to connect to the PC.
Followed Neomuzic's instructions to the letter, but Safari isn't getting things working. Any assistance would be appreciated!!!
Nevermind... I'm a dork! Figured out where Internet Sharing was on the phone, and all is well. Having a little trouble connecting to my work proxy server... but messing with that now.

As of August2007, Missing Sync 4 supports WM6.
I'm also using bluetooth pan right now to post
Hello all,
I usually dont post much since i rarely have anything to contribute, but this time I do. I am running a macbook connected to my cingular 8525 thru the bluetooth pan and have zero problems. I upgraded my rom to the new vp one with all the latest settings and love it. No more looking for a hotspot for me. I dont use safari broswer on my mac, i use firefox. Thanks to everyone on this forum with the knowledge and time for helping the rest of us.
What i do is connect my JasJam to xp running through parallels, start internet sharing and it installs the drivers(first time of connecting it) and then it works perfectly everytime. Only in xp though.
I have installed the latest missing sync but havent tried internet sharing on mac osx but now that u guys say it works thats awesome! Will mess with it later (knowing me i won't attempt to get it to work until i'm off in some foriegn area with no internet connection and will need to download drivers that i'll struggle to get through pie/opera on my jasjam...) i fail to plan ahead with things like this! lol

Tethering 8525 to MACBOOK. HELP.
I tried several different approaches to tether my 8525 to my MACBOOK, with no success.
I have specific scripts from the web installed into the modem scripts folder. No luck with any of them. I believe the scripts aren't the problem but the COM ports are the culprit.
I recieve an error message that says," Failed to open RFCOMM serial channel. Check if authentication needs to be enabled in your device"
This is after pairing the 8525 to the MACBOOK and completing the blue tooth setting in the Network folder in the System Preference folder.
The pairing is successful because I can "send files" to the 8525 via blue tooth icon.
I read somewhere that the MACBOOK should allow me to set and choose COM ports but I haven't found the option.
My question is where do I find the COM port option in the MACBOOK because I believe that is where my problem is.
MACBOOK C2D, OS 10.4.10.

I'm used to surf and download to my windows phone through bluetooth using the internet on my computer. I't can't be done with my new android phone?
I dont see why Android would want to waste their time with such inferior methods. 3G is faster than bluetooth. But WiFi is the option to choose.
I need this feature too.
I think the OP wants his laptop as the access point....not his phone (tethering). This can be done with WinMo phones. It is useful in places where there is no free WiFi....like in my workplace we only use LAN with our laptops. Whenever I connect my Desire to my laptop via USB or BT, I hope I could then update weather and download and install apps on my HTC Desire using my laptop's internet connection.
The only way to do it without some root bluetooth hacking would be broadcasting wifi from your laptop. Mac OS has this built-in in the sharing preference pane, Windows can do it but there are a few more steps. Nothing hard.
Thierry Parent has put up a working solution here ...

Worked great for me !
Cheers,
Vikram.
Im running sense 3.0 3d ..its got options to do that once u plug in a USB cable

Droid Wireless Tethering
Google a program called gingersnap. it works. It gives super user rights. Be carefull your data usage will be high. Make sure you have unlimited data. you will also need to download a wifi tether program
Just wondering if there is a way to tether to a computer with a wired connection to get Internet connection that way, instead of using wifi??? There is lots of apps and stuff that need to connect to the internet to download, but I dont have the wifi's at home.
And if not, is it a hardware limitation, or software???
Handset in question is an Acer Liquid E
I've seen others ask this question & not get an answer that they wanted.
I'm not sure if its hardware, software or just lack of developer interest to create an app to do it.
The simple fact of the matter is that you can pick up a cheap router for $20 that'll solve the issue for you. It's not the solution you want, but it might be the only one available to you.
Heres another thread, it might have suggestions (or updates) that will be useful for you:

you are right that is definately not the answer that Im looking for, as i have a good wireless router, but i live with a Internet Nazi that doesn't want to have wireless in the household.
But thanks for the link, I'll definitely check it out : )

The best I can recommend is having a wireless card in your laptop and creating a ad-hoc network, but if I am not mistaken, the ad-hoc network is not supported on a android device.
You could always do a quick search for some software on the internet that support it, but good luck with that.
You could always convince the internet nazi to use mac address filtering on the router to ensure that only the devices you use are allowed to connect.
Don't know anything about your phone, but both WM and Android phones gladly hooks up to a comp using USB-wire (which is faster than any wireless).
WM6.5 have a program icon called Internet sharing something.
while Android got a pay/trial app called Easy Tether that for the same job.
Be aware that some provider do not allow hooking-up a computer on some cellphone plans, call your provider and ask them.
Using both a X10 Mini(Android) and a M1i Aspen(WM6.5) connected by wire both for file transfer peer2peer and Internet access.
Also there are Bluetooth and a possibility to remove the memory card from the phone and copy files to it in a card reader on a computer.
PDAnet
The only thing I can think of is an app called PDANet on the market, you do need internet to download it on your computer, but if it's a laptop, just take it to a wifi hotspot, like Starbucks or something and download the computer app, then tether all you want
PDAnet
No need to go to a wifi hotspot with the laptop to get the computer drivers for pdanet. You can do it right from the phone, it will download to your sdcard then all you do is mount the sdcard to the comp via usb and open the .exe file, load the drivers and start tethering. Only thing with PDAnet is you cant access secure websites with the free version. But it is an AWESOME app non the less.

Do you want to use your phone's internet for your pc? Then yes- it's possible with apps. (called tethering. search for wifi tether or usb tether in market or on xda...)
if you want to use your pc's connection - then probably not.

no i mean i donot have a wifi modem and i have adsl net modem and also with respect to battry problem in hd2 i prefer to use net with prob connection but many of builds did not have the internet pass through option
for this aim i like to know that is it posible to add this option to that kind of build as a for example apk software
I have the same issue, having the Internet Pass-Through function (which uses PC's connection on the phone) of Desire HD builds on the Desire builld would be great.
yap
its easy you can use your pc's wifi and turn it into a access point
and then using it trough the wifi
can't be easier than this
see,you left out the most important part: problem is that not all of the pc's have wifi!!!
There is also USB tethering, although you'll have to check if there's any builds with it working.
I don't bother with it as I use wifi tethering instead.
The program Connectify is working pretty good, to use my netbooks LAN connection as access point. Always use it abroad when in hotels without wifi and only wired internet. Works only with windows7 though.

I really feel the need to help the OP here. I don't have an answer to his question, but I do understand what he's asking for, and other people seem to be answering different things!!!
He want's to use a USB cable (not wifi) to allow his phone to use his PC's internet connection.
Tethering is irrelevant (that's using the phone's internet connection on the PC) and he does not have a wireless router so cannot use wifi on his phone.
In response to the OP, the only thing I've ever seen as a conclusive answer is that this cannot be done (there is no software that currently does it). That was an answer on a website from about 7 months ago though, and I am aware of the option on the Desire HD, so there is obviously a way to do it now.
I hope you find what you're looking for

IN the revolution HD 2.2 mdeejay NAND version - you have this option built in in this rom !!!
i used it - its working.
USB tethering is part of the Froyo OS. The problems you may have are that it does not work correctly with a lot of builds. Most of the HTC builds tend to work though.
Hmmm.... I also have the same problem.
I don't want to use the 3G Data connection for internet because it's expensive so it would be really useful to get internet through usb from a computer.
So far I only saw this option on M-Deejay's Revolution HD rom and for me it was kind of a heavy build. Worked kinda slow so I flashed a different rom which doesn't have the usb internet pass through.
I also tried Connectify. My phone connected to the computer's wireless but the internet didn't work. I tried disabling my firewall, opening ports, and other things but it just doesn't work. I think it has to do with the software not supporting all WiFi cards.
So now I'm having trouble getting on the internet with my phone to download apps. I have to go outside and look for some WiFi networks to do it and that kinda sucks
I think it finally works! I installed the latest Connectify beta version from here:
http://connectify.blogspot.com/2010/11/connectify-211-beta-up-for-testing.html
And it kinda works now! I think it's just a bit slow.

And I'm still having problems trying to make it work :/
When you plug in the phone and it brings up the list, with share internet at the bottom. Is there any way to make that option free, or replace it within the menu with something that is free?
Yes, but it needs to be written into a custom ROM.
ya, I know that lots of custom roms have that option, but why not just use wireless tether? If you're still on stock rom, just go into the market and download it. It's free and works great.
Why not just use the once sprint bundles with the phone? The sprint mobile hotspot one.
Is there some disadvantage to that?
the mobile hotspot is unavailable in the same way usb tether is unavailabe. Sprint does not want you to use your phone for tethering without paying them an extra $30 a month.
Can't you use EasyTether from the market? Doesn't require root. Try the free version and if you like it you could buy the $10 version that allows https access. I have never used it but the description states it can do this without root probably because it is using USB so cannot work as a hotspot for multiple PCs at one time and you did state you cared about the USB tethering vs wireless.
I believe barnecle ? I think is the name, also allows usb.
Barnacle is for root as are all wireless tether apps..

Why USB tether?
I would like USB tether because most of the time when I don't have internet, I also don't have power. Why would I plug my phone into my computer, only to turn on the computer's wifi and turn on the phones wifi to make the connection?
If I can only have the 3g/4g radio going, and no wifi on either device, I get better battery life all around.
Here is what I use for USB tethering. It requires a little bit of setup (and adb), but does not require root, and is completely free. In my opinion it works much better than EasyTether or PDA Net

I use Ubuntu, so I can help with setup if anyone needs it. For OSX and Windows, you are on your own.
