I downloaded the speedtest.net application and over the course of a month tested my speeds on wifi and 3g in Seattle. I was wondering what speeds people were getting as mine feel really low
For wifi I'm avging about 1/2 mbps (my upload is faster )
For 3g I'm avging about .5/.3 mbps
Is there a different speedtest I should be using? Are these speeds typical or is something wrong with my phone...
Thing is. I feel like the internet is pretty fast esp on wifi... maybe the readings are just wrong
Wifi N @ home - Ping: 37, Download: 2,245kbps, Upload: 2,822kbps
Wifi G @ work - Ping: 151, Download: 607kbps, Upload: 1,364kbps
3G - Ping: 138, Download: 802kbps, Upload: 427kbps
H - Ping: 111, Download: 927kbps, Upload: 244kbps
My 3G speeds have varied too much by location to really justify posting here. I've never seen over 1Mbps, but I usually see over 400Kbps down. Up varies a lot more, but never more than 1Mbps and never less than 100kbps.
But, what I did want to mention is that I have an N router with 20Mbit Comcast connection at home and my phone typically sees 10Mbit down and 5 to 8Mbit up. I also see speeds in that range here at work where I can't vouch for what kind of routers or what kind of internet connection they use, but both are likely fairly fast.
So, if you are only seeing 1/2Mbps on your Wifi, it is probably limited by your router or your broadband connection.
[BTW, browsing the web via Wifi at home and at work feels almost as snappy as my latest generation Macbook Pro. It was quite stunning compared to my G1...]
Tested my phone for couple days with the speedtest app. Highest I've gotten today is 3341kbps download speed. Usually download speeds are between 2500 and 3000.

Hey all,
Recently I have heard a lot of talk about how t-mobile has altered their network and speculation as to how to get the fastest connections.
I ran several speed tests while connected to each one, and here are the averages.
I found a list of the APNs athttp://wiki.howardforums.com/index.php/T-Mobile_APNs
BTW, I have the unlimited internet, so I can do this without getting charged for bandwidth, don't do this if you don't have an actual data plan!
I have not tested the latency with the T-MobileWeb proxy.

I also wasn't able to get internet3.voicestream.com to work at all, can anyone connect to that APN?
If so can you please run 5 or 6 speed tests at http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed and post averages?
thanks 4 this!
so which one have you settled on(fastest most reliable in your opinion)?
thx again!
Any new connections we can use?
Also, which is the most reliable?
I have not been able to runs several tests and post them, but I can tell you that I have best results downloading and tethering using wap.voicestream.com as my APN.
Currently downloading to my computer some files and im getting a 30.00kb/s 113.5kb/s max.
oh and im using a TMO TP2 unlocked cooked ROM
why is yours so slow? i get around 3-5 mb/s when im not throttled and then ill use internet2.voicestream.com and ill get 1-3 mb/s when im throttled at 5 gb ill get around 60 kb/s
I have unlimited data plan. epc.tmobile.com is my apn. will get charges if I change it?
Further Testing
I was able to test Epc, internet2, and internet3 On my T-mobile Vibrant, running Froyo stock JL5.
My results are shown below, and the summary is:
(From Dslreports)
Fastest average download: Internet 3 (2766 kbps, latency unknown, download rate based on download time calculated)
Best latency: Epc
(From speakEasy)
Fastest average download: Epc (3470 kbps)
Note, internet 3 exhibited Poor latency during speakeasy Tests
Conclusion:
Stick with epc, unless experiencing Lag Or low signal strength. Signal Strength seems higher with internet3, but the quality isn't as good as with epc. Regardless, internet3 outperforms Internet2.
I hope this helps some of you. It goes without saying, of course that signal varies by location.

If you're in DFW, you should be on HSPA. Why are you in the hundreds of kb/s range? Using speakeasy and speedtest from the market, I routinely get multiple Mb/s.
I am curious to find out what other peoples speeds are. Mine is 956 up and 786 down. I used the speed app with the blue speedometer from Ookla that runs on speedtest.net
Using the "Speed Test" app, my speeds vary of course but typically are between 1200 and 1800 kbps download, and between 640 and 700 kbps upload.
1184 Down (spiking to 1350)
680 Up (spiking to 800+)
speetest
My Evdo speeds are just as fast as my wifi speeds usually 1200-1800 and 700-800. No clue why my wifi is so damn slow.
Depends on where i'm at. At home they range from 800-1300 up and 500-700 down. At Work i've gone as fast as 2400 up and 800 down. Location and weather seem to have a big effect on speeds.

same here. I was thinking the phone couldn't handle my high internet speeds.
Just curious what speed is normal for 3g downloads. Where I live (boonies) I'm only on edge but have wifi in my house. But at work, which is in a city with 3g, I see down speeds of maybe 100 kbps. Been awhile so I can't remember for sure. But the last test I ran via speakeasy.net showed me @ ~1.13mb down and up on 3g. What 3g speeds do you guys see and is my area just a turd or are those average 3g speeds?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I get somewhere between 2 to 5mbps down and 1.7 up, depending on signal strength.
Also, what area are you in? that will give us more info. (and as to whether its a hspa+ city).
The best speedtest result was DL:3.4Mbps HSDPA. Average is around 2Mbps. Telco: CELCOM Malaysia
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Bowling Green Ky is the 3g area I frequent. Its 3g is piss poor pitiful then in comparison to you guys.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
My n1 is on T-Mobile in lower Mahatten, financial district, I get 302 kbps down and 298 kbps up. It's not bad, but I wish it were better
Max was 4Mbps down and 1.4Mbps up or so.
Average is about 1/2 of those values.
At home at around midnight I get around 5.5 mbps down. 1.3 up.
Edited: ok -got my answer: speedtest.net
How do you measure DL and UL speed ?
Where are you guys that are you getting such good 3g speeds? I'm Manhatten and it is horrid.
I average around 2mbit down, 1.2mbit up here in Central Kentucky, but I've seen as high as 2.6mbit down, 1.5mbit up.
Just ran a test, 2.4mbit, 1.3mbit. Why the Speedtest app picks weird random servers I don't know, but what's funny is I usually get the fastest speed on the one it picks so I just leave it alone.
See my sig. I always get these speeds, live in montreal. This carrier is new so there isn't any congestion...
my average 3G speeds. NYC. my top speedtest is at 6.3mbps
I live in Corona CA, which by no means is a small city and i routinely get 4-5 Megs during what some would call 'peak" hours and anywhere above that late night.
At work in Hillsboro, Or. I get from 1.5-3.5mb/s down and 600kb - 1.5mb up. On ****ty ATT.
This is horrid guys. In fairness, a lot of times I get into the 1.0Mb range but here in my results from speakeasy.
I'm in Bowling Green, Ky on At&t
Last Result: Download Speed: 215 kbps (26.9 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 781 kbps (97.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Dang. Yea the speeds I mentioned were T-Mobile's, and it seems they don't have 3G in Bowling Green. AT&T seems to, though its not that big of 3g coverage.

Sounds like UTMS (3G), not HSPA (3.5G). What's the fastest speed you've ever gotten?
UTMS supports up to 2 Mbit/s data transfer rates, although typical users can expect performance of around 64 kbit/s in a heavily loaded real-world system.
And on top of that, looks like Bowling Green has a fairly tight radius around the city that's "Mobile Broadband", but doesn't say if it's UTMS, HSDPA, or HSPA.

Average 2.5 down and around 1.25 up outside of chicago.
im on att in the boston area and im getting around 2.8mbps down 1mbps up
Denver here. I get on average 1-1.5 down and 200-500 up. I work on the west side of town and live on the east. Doesnt vary from one side to the other. I try to stay on wifi whenever possible
*Please forgive my noobness*
The Focus is my first smartphone. I live in Columbus, OH. I have the $30 unlimited data for smartphones. I talked AT&T into reverse grandfathering me into the unlimited plan.
I had major issues two days ago trying to stream music from Last.FM. It wouldn't, I had 4 bars 3G. I used the free speed test app. The very best Ive seen on it was a peek of 107kbps with a 68kbps average being the best I've seen. A low ping of average of 639. most of the time I see 12-20kbps. So I call AT&T 611 customer service. After waiting on hold for about 3 minutes my rep cam back and told me the average data speed is 19kbps for data nationwide... . Their web site states speeds ranging from 2Mbps-7.2Mbps.
So all numbers aside, my coworkers on Verizon and T-Mobile are opening web sites on there phones sometimes 10-15 seconds faster then me. I read people stating speeds in the 2MBps-5MBps range.
Is this an AT&T thing, or a Focus thing? I live in a pretty high tech/low population city compared to other major cities in the country. I do live a few miles away from The Ohio State University, and its 55,000 undergrads. But even at work, or on the freeway, my speeds stay really slow. I know I'm spoiled with my 35MB per-second home connection speeds, but I really though mobile data would be faster then dial up.
Can you guys please share your speeds and advise with me. Much thanks in advance!!
I'd start off by first understanding that 2Mbps - 7.2Mbps is way different than the value you're stating of 2MBps - 7.2MBps.
There is NO way, to my knowledge, that the 3G networks of AT&T or Verizon supports up to 7.2MBps. And I've yet to experience even 7.2Mbps myself.
What are you using to test? If you're using the one and only Speed Tester in the WP7 Marketplace, I've heard it tends to output low speeds.
I get about 28-58KBps, which is pretty much suck. But I don't really get much better with Verizon where I am at the moment, either.
By the way, in general, Samsung's have this unwritten reputation for having shoddy radio baseband software or even hardware. I have witnessed this firsthand on all my Samsung phones.
Both my Samsung Focus and Samsung Fascinate average lower data throughput both on mobile broadband and WiFi than my HTC Incredible or my Blackberry. No idea why, for sure.
I would not base my speed on the app provided in the marketplace. I would more likely base it on web browsing and check out a 1 MB download on http://www.mobilespeedtest.com
This site yields accurate latency at the top of the screen after test and i think this site yields a better network speed test.
Update you might want to try 3-5mb tests just because they are yielding faster speeds almost reaching 4g speeds...average 2232kbps

Nice site. This seems much more accurate.
I called an AT&T store, asking them what to expect. They guy did tell me he went to seminar and got a Focus for free, he has a Blackberry Torch too. He said in every way he has tested it the Focus "crushes" the Blackberry. Anyway, he asked what phones I had before, (LG Xenon, Krazor, Razor) he told me to come in to the store, that they wanted to give me a new Sim card free of charge. He said he was 75% sure my speed would increase. He stated that my Sim Card being ~4 years old is probably affecting how the network sees my phone. So I'm going up there in the morning, then will retest to see if there are any changes.
Tonights results,

500kb - 960kbps

Also try http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest (choose the mobile test.) Good latency test there, too.
I've actually been pretty pleased when compared to an iPhone 4. AT&T is poor where I live and the iPhone cannot hold a call longer than 5 minutes. I kept an old Fuze around for those times I knew the call would go more than a couple minutes. So far the Focus hasn't dropped a call and data is noticably faster than what the iPhone pulls. I haven't done a ton of tests over several days but a few tests with the same sim card (using an adapter in the Focus) had the iPhone pulling around 260 kbps while the Focus was pulling a little over 400 kbps (1MB test). Yes, seriously. I wouldn't mind seeing some numbers from the Kissimmee area where the iPhone 4 flat out screamed.

So far the data speeds are not stellar for me. My iphone 4 blows it away currently. I want to like the phone but i want speed.
Just got my new SIM card. I'm most pleased with the effects. 1st the " robotic voice " friends and family reported at times is gone. Very obvious real world results. Netflix quality, and streaming music from Last.FM, download music from Zune all have a dramatic increase in performance.

Was tethering at the time
so I just upgraded my internet service today and I started running tests with speedtest.net with the expectation to see slightly faster speeds in the range of 7-15 Mbps. Boy was I wrong! I'm getting between 20-30 down, averaging around 25.
Now, I decide to test my phone, same wifi and speed test.net app and I barely even see a change in speeds, why is that? I was getting around 4.5 down average. I had one test jump to 6.8 and averaged 5 with the inter net upgrade.
I don't get it?
