In 1.44.xxx.xx I was able to disable HSPA but keep 3G.
Now I'm on 1.66.404.02 which is the official UK ROM I cannot seem to disable HSPA.
The reason I want to disable it is I found it gave me a more reliable data connection in some areas. I would prefer a method without CABS or registry tweaks as that's how I did it before.
The way I can disable HSPA is:
From "Settings" tab in Sense:
1. "Menu"
2. "All Settings"
3. "Connections"
4. "Advanced Network"
5. There should be a "HSDPA/HSUPA" tab (mine opens to that one by default) and from there you should be able to select "Disable" from a drop-down.
Thanks Spike.
That's the one!

I recently got the HD, but since I live in Canada I figured it wasn't worth it to get a data plan (Can only use EDGE and prices are outrageous). As such, I'm wondering if there are any apps or methods to block data.
I would still want to be able to use wifi for internet and such, but stop EDGE from working. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!
Goto the Comm Manager and turn Data Connection off? Don't know what that does to wifi which has a seperate on/off? That failing, could you not disable data from your operator?
what works for me is to set networks for automatic internet access to "company network":
Start - settings - connections tab - connections icon - extended tab - select networks - automatic internet access => set to company network
I have a german device so had to guess english names ... be warned.
if you make the change and try to update weather data you should get an error.
Set it back to your phone provider should make it connect (and charge you) again.
I called my carrier and asked for data transfer to be blocked.
Start - Settings - Connections
Tap the Connections icon
There you might see an entry for your mobile provider - in my case I see
"Vodafone Live"
- Add a new modem
- Edit my proxy server
- Manage existing connections
Tap 'Manage existing connections'
You will see a list of modems (in my case I see 'Vodafone Live')
Tab and hold the modem
Choose delete
Anyone tried MoDaCo's NoData utility?

dwnload tweaks 3.3. There is an option to disable one or al of your data connections.
You need to install compact framework 3.5 first (google it if unsure).
By using AnyCut, I found out a hidden setting in my G1.
I'm using Cyanogen's Android mod 3.6.8.1, but I assume the setting is also in the factory Android and others.
Press an empty area of Home Screen as if to add a shortcut, then select "Shortcuts" , select AnyCut, select Activity, then find the group of entries named "Settings". For me it was the second "Setting" selection from the top.
When I clicked this new "Settings" shortcut, a menu appeared:
Title: "Set GSM/UMTS band"
Entries: Automatic/EURO Band/USA Band/Japan Band/AUS Band/AUS2 Band/
I tried "Automatic" (seemed to make sense then), and my 3G and E (UMTS and EDGE) stopped working - I could not get my phone to connect to the mobile network! So I switched to EURO band, and Edge started working - but to get 3G working again, I had to enable it (3G), and then reopen the "Settings" menu and select "EURO band" again.
hi,
i wanna ask why my hero always stay on EDGE? is there some app that will force it to stay on HSDPA / 3G? thx..
It probably stays on Edge because that's the strongest available signal. However, you can force 3G/HSDPA.
You need to use AnyCut to create a shortcut to the activity "Phone Info". Once this is done,if you run this app and scroll down you should see "Set preferred network type" which is usually set to "WCDMA preferred" - if you set this to "WCDMA only", you force 3G.

Dave

Hi Dave,
I know this is an old thread. I have a G2X running cm7 RC1 and was wondering the same thing about mobile network staying on EDGE. I actually did this and it worked, now I'm forcing it to stay on 3G. I wanna ask a dumb question...and idk if you would know but would I get charge a fee of something for doing this.. and also since I'm on T-mobile wouldn't it be GSM only instead of WCDMA..
Thanks..
You shouldn't do, so long as you have an internet allowance.
And WCDMA is kind of similar to GSM from it's Wiki page.
I have a data plan, and also use Wi-Fi at home.
But I just found out, all my messenger(Windows live) conversations are sent as Text message. Why???
I do not have text message plan, so it would cost me a lot...
Is there a setting to change this to use internet instead???(I thought it does, but obviously it does NOT!)
Thanks.
Try changing sms setting:
1. Run CommManager
2. Hit "Change phone settings" so you see "Phone settings" screen
3. Hit "Menu" button and choose "Advanced network"
4. Go to "SMS Service" tab
5. Choose "GPRS" in checkbox labelled "SMS over".
6. Viola!

My setting was "GSM prefered", now change it to "GPRS", hope this solves my problem.
Hi All,
I've got Omnia II with WM 6.5 in which i have to manually turn off / disconnect the data connection all the times and it always turn on again after a while.
can anyone recommend or suggest which way / tools to disable the non-wifi data connection only ? so far i only i need GSM and the Wifi only to reduce unwanted cost.
Thanks.
Open Samsung Settings (press the big button) and hit on the top line the key with the arrow left/right.
Select the Option "Wireless Manager" - and take a look at the right bottom corner. There you see "MENUE" - press it and select "Data con. Settings".
Tick all three Options and select the "TIME OFF" at "NO PACKET FOR". Switch device off and on again and from now disconect the WiFi connection with a short press on the PowerOff Button.
yes that works man, now I'm using nodata.cab to make the setting permanent.
How to disable data connection manually in Omnia II (WM 6.5)-do not see "data" option
".....There you see "MENUE" - press it and select "Data con. Settings".
Tick all three Options and select the "TIME OFF" at "NO PACKET FOR". "
With my i920 all is on for "phone, bluetooth, wi-fi,data"
I do not see any "Data con Settings" screen when I press "Menu" - only see "Phone Setting, Bluetooth,Wi-Fi". How can I see "Data" to make change?
Thank.
