Vodafone 1.66 Rom - HD2 General

I've just finished a long and extremely helpful conversation with tech support at Vodafone.
He assured me that the new rom is being tested at the moment by a colleague of his at Vodafone in Stoke and when approved will be available for download both from HTC and Vodafone.
He did say that the roms should be able to be downloaded directly from HTC and when I explained that this hasn't been possible with the 1.48 rom he promised to look into it and ring me back.
I await his call.

If I remember correctly, branded ROMs, when released, are available from the HTC support site, but they're labelled as being for a specific supplier. They should accept your serial number for those downloads.
It's a long time since I've had a branded phone, so that's going from not too recent memory

This is for the UK version.

Just upgrade here
I too am a VF customer and I gave up waiting - just loaded HSPL and downloaded 1.66, both from this site. Very easy, no issues. My 1.43 was fine but 1.66 seems a more stable and fast.
Can always remove HSPL and use HTC or VF warranty if needed.

+1 to that! Been using 1.66 for a day or so now and the whole process to flash to the new rom was painless thanks to the help from members of this site.
I think you're much better off taking matters into your own hands with firmware updates when on Vodafone UK, I should know, my last handset was a Blackberry Storm!!

Let's see what we have learned from this call.
1) VF are working on a ROM update - we knew that.
2) No-one's saying when it will be released - no change there.
3) He thinks you can download and use any HTC rom on your VF HD2 as supplied - so he obviously doesn't know what he's talking about and anything he said is therefore worthless.
I will be amazed if he rings you back.

Is there a definitive list of differences between the different UK ROM versions?

Is there a list somewhere which includes all the differences between the different UK versions of the phone (e.g. unbranded, Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile)? I'm particularly interested in differences between the non-branded and T-Mobile versions. For example, I heard that the T-Mobile version has the YouTube client application removed - is that true?
This would be nice as O2 apparently have removed the Wifi router application. (can this be added back in with a cab file?)
I see no reason why 02 should.... all these mobile price plans have 'fair usage allowances' in them so all they need to do is make them clear and they can charge what they like for people abusing the wifi router capability at their own will...
Thats probably one of the best features for their business users anyway!
T-Mobile do infact block YouTube on mobiles as far as I know.
I think the Vodafone ROM is just the stock HTC ROM (from what I have been told).

They certainly don't block them here. I'm sure we'd hear about it if they did though.

I have the T-mobile version of the HD2 and the youtube application has in fact been removed from the rom which i am really disappointed about. just have to wait for a Hard SPL to come out, then im gonna start cooking and wont have this problem

Official htc hero 2.1 rom scheduled!!!

ORGINALLY POSTED AT MODACO
HEY!
LOOK WHAT I MANAGED TO SQUEEZE OUT OF A NOOB FROM HTC
I SENT
Hi. I am so waiting for the new firmware for the HTC Hero (GSM) and I was wondering why can't you (htc) just release what they've done so far then OTA patch it later? I guess you're almost finished because you've used a whole lot of time now. I've been waiting ever since before christmas and checked your website for new update every day. I'm impationtly waiting! And please, if you do not release it, please provide me some details!
THEY REPLIED
Dear
Thank you for your enquiry about htc hero.
Some of the phones in our Android line up including your Hero are due to receive an upgrade, and it is scheduled to be released starting at the end of April. Your phone should be upgraded Over-The-Air. You can expect a pop-up message on your phone when connected to the internet once it is ready. When the upgrade is ready, we will notify you via our website and on various social media networks including Twitter and Face book.
If these steps have not helped, please let me know by responding using the link provided and I will be happy to check again for you.

Yeah right. First it was january, then march, now april.
and havn't they already said it won't be an OTA?
i didn't think the jump from 1.5 to 2.1 was possible via an OTA.

I agree... the OTA thing sounds like a bunch of horse piss. The update includes a new kernel, which means replacing the current kernel, which means the phone will need to be in either recovery or fastboot mode in order for the update to take place. Correct me if I'm wrong...
I'm skeptical...
However the OTA is not the problem. They didn't say it's an OTA update... just said that, you'll get a message on your phone telling you an update is available (+ instructions: go to website bla bla).
Still don't believe what some HTC support-minion says. They don't have a clue.

Some people over here in holland got the same mail. OTA and the end of april...
Funny since the Sprint hero (wich is branded) wil get his update around 20th of march....
I think this is because of the legend wich is released last week. The legend is a faster phone than the hero. But also more expensive I think when the difference is only a few mhz and a amoled screen not a lot of people who have the hero is gonna buy the legend when the hero get's 2.1...
For me it just opened another option. Kind of sick of promises was going to buy a desire but don't know for sure now...
I got sick of all the promises when the 15th of March came and went, installed behero rom and am a happy bunny
OTA
what i think they ment is that you'll get a notice or message on your phone that a new firmware is available and you'll have to goto their website

No you'll get the message there a new rom and HTC said it's going to be pushed to your phone (so OTA)
Seems strange to me since not everybody has decent 3g cover, without it it would take a very long time
to download a 130mb file....
So I hope this is gonna change, I'd rather download it myself than have it pushed to my phone

I don't want an OTA update, i'd rather wait until a decent rom is cooked up so I don't have to go through the hassle of creating a goldcard again or anything else similar. (Could even be impossible)

i can make a schedule like that in word...

Sorry if this is a little offtopic, but do you have any news on the HTC Magic (32A)?
Thanks
Hero update of Sprint
Yesterday, we had news that HTC was supposedly going to release an Android 2.1 update for HTC Hero in late April, however, here is some news which will bring cheers to your ears.
android_21[1]
According to a HTC forum member, who spoke with a Sprint executive to troubleshoot his HTC Hero which did not have service, the Android 2.1 update may arrive on March 26th, 2010 for Sprint users instead of the late April. The conversation below: (emphasis added)
I just got of the phone with the advanced support at sprint becuase my phone did not have any service since this morning. They tried all the basic trouble shooting and then said that they had seen this issue before but that the new firmware will address this issue they also stated that reactivating the phone is a work around for now. I kept on asking about the firmware release and they finally released a date for the 2.1 firmware. He stated and confirm that this update will come on 03/26/2010.
However, this update is not officially confirmed, and if released will only be available for Sprint users right now, other HTC Hero users might have to wait till April end to receive official OTA updates from HTC directly.
We will keep our eyes open for any official confirmation from Sprint with regards to this. In the meantime you can call the Sprint support and let us know if they do confirm this with you.

perhaps if yours is branded tmobile you could do so, and post the changelog here ?
there must be some change or why would they post it dated 15/03/10 ???

there is no changelog from htc's site. it's just a small "updated" t-mo uk ROM, still based on the very first 1.43 ROMs. i wont call it an update at all. FYI, this so called update has been made available in xda for a long time now. i've downloaded it and compared the Hash, and they are 100% identical.
omg!
if this is the update i've waited 3 months for then heads are gonna roll!
is it actually the exact same rom as before?
what the hell was the point in it?

It's not even an update. Its the exact same version number that I have on my original ROM T-Mobile HD2 - ROM Version:1.43.110.2.
And yes, I still have my original ROM. It works okay for what I do, and want to stick with official ROMs if possible. Maybe in the future if T-Mobile don't give a real update, or I hit serious issues, but for now I'd like to keep my warranty intact. I'm aware I can re-flash it easily back to the original ROM (even more so now that ROM is officially available to download) - however my concern is over times when I get a fault which means I cannot re-flash it.
i'm on the original t-mobile rom and find it suitable. the only real change ive made is to revert back to the windows messaging set up, not htc messages.
how many people on the original rom have had problems with HTC messaging?
The disclaimer says:
* This is a generic software update. Any additional software or settings provided by your mobile operator or company will be lost. If you require this customization, please contact your supplier first before upgrading.
This may 'unlock' t-mobile from their current position and allow them the HTC rom upgrade path.
Has anyone tried this?

Interesting point, however I suspect it's a standard disclaimer they put onto their ROM downloads. Would be interesting though for someone to confirm?
Well, someone try and download it using their S/N and try flashing. Worst that happens is it says 'Incorrect Vendor ID'

At least we now have an official T-Mobile ROM we can revert to if we ever need to take the phone back.
I know they tend not to bother if you install other ROMs, but nice to have it as a fallback option.
*sigh*
Goldcard here we come... Interesting that on t-mo's own forum thread
they haven't actually announced the availability of this yet (even though they must be able to see their own customers fuming away...)

I don't even want to think what the reaction on there is going to be once they actually announce it.
Ah, no, they'll mark it as solved, and no-one will be able to post! Good stuff, eh?
I tried it just incase it was generic but that was a a massive waste of time, as far as I can see this rom is identical to the factory version.

O2 uk new rom (end of this month)

After weeks of calling O2 and moaning on and on about the locked old 1.43 rom today I have been told by O2 we WILL finaly have a new rom (i guess 1.72) last day of march!
Finally
We were suppose to have it 2 weeks ago...I wont be holding my breath about this...we will see...
Unbelievable how long it's taken o2 to give people an official upgrade. Thank the lord for xda-devs, eh? HSPL & freedom all the way!
i bet its 1.66 rom o2 are really slacking at the moment....
Any clues where it will be available to download?
Really now so what is this the third or fourth date that we have heard. I will believe it when i see it as they say.
and yes I am pessimistic, especially when it comes to O2 and updates...
Also MidnightDraven it will be on the HTC site or may HTC Pedia, if it gets leaked....
Ahh good. thanks for that.
Lets hope it turns up then.
I doubt 1.72 .. It's incredibly frustrating dealing with them. I understand the reasons, but they don't help at all. And after all this waiting, chances are that they have only been looking at 1.48 and 1.66....... O2 suck.
It's about bloody time too - I just hope they actually keep to their word this time
Has anyone else confirmed this? I'll try give 'em a ring after work later.......£10 says they will tell me a different date!

At least they might understand you when you mention "ROM" or "Update" as they thought I wanted a new phone, even after explaining it in an email with links to HTC's ROM updates.
Are O2 usually so bad at releasing ROMs? I have personally never flashed one before, but i've waited, as you all have, ages for an official update.
Yeh they are
got the wrong thread a little...
I must be missing something here but.....who cares? I have an O2 Leo and the only time I would consider using an official O2 rom is if I was returning it for repair like I had to recently.

Well I would like to flash my first ROM, and preferably one I know for sure will work. So I am quietly optimistic about the new ROM and the features it will have on it. Otherwise I will probably sit with the one I have for a bit longer before considering using a cooked ROM.

Install HSPL and flash any rom you want. Providing you follow the instructions there is absolutely no need to use a network rom, none of them can hold a candle to a decent cooked rom. You will probably never see WM 6.5.5 on any official network rom yet there are various cooked roms that offer the opportunity to experience Windows Mobile and capacitive screens working reasonably well together for the first time. Xannytech's Evolution 1.4 which I'm using is just one of them.

Good luck, t-mobile promissed us the same thing by the end of this month and we got given the original ROM (1.43) probably because they thought , nobody will know it's not an update
I thought sod it so flashed hardspl and then the official HTC rom (1.66), gone from rebooting the thing 5+ times a day to once every 3 days or so (which I can live with)
I doubt 1.72 .. It's incredibly frustrating dealing with them.

Tmobile usa update

I got a text from tmobile saying there was a update for my phone, just wondering if anyones done it?
One more here... I will wait little bit more and see if that is in fact new new new update... not the one they released and pulled out due to issue people reported...
Ya I also got the message yesterday afternoon. I knew TMo already had rolled out 2.13 stock rom as I upgraded it from my standard 2.10 stock rom more than 3weeks ago. I am also aware it had issues as reported by many people also to add fuel to the fire for some unknown reason TMo decided to pull the download out making it offline. So thinking this maybe be a new revision of the stock rom 2.13 I desided to check it out and found its the same 2.13.531.1 TMo stock rom.
