Created sub-folder in Start menu folder "Tools" - Now double entries! - HD2 General

Hello Forum!
One phenomenon for the wise guys. After creating sub-folders in the Start menu folder "Tools" (i.e. "GPS", containing a collection of GPS programs to clean out the start menu), I realized that the just created folders do show up in the main Start menu as well (and also as desired in the "Tools" folder of the Start menu). Why the double entries?? I skinned the folder icons with suitable PNG files in the registry, but in the registry the double entries (folders) do not show up at all. Also in the folder Windows\Startmenu\Programs the double entries are not present.
Does anybody know that phenomenon and probably even a solution for it?
Thank you for your time guys, and have a great day!

Sure, was my first thought as well. Many times, no luck...

That is weird, the start menu should show only folders that are present in windows/start menu/programs

I had exactly the same problem. The files I moved to the folder were all in, but the original files outside the folder were still showing in the start menu even though they weren't showing in Resco File Explorer!!
What I did was to undo everything and put all the files back to how they were originally ie outside of the folder, then used ''copy to'' instead of cut and paste and copied the files to the new folders. Then I made all of the original files ''hidden'' in Resco. So they are all still there but invisible in the Start Menu.

I will try that and let you know what happened! Thank you for the description!
Edit: That is really weird indeed!
I deleted all folders and started the complete process again, now with "copy to". Everything was perfectly fine, up to the moment when I was re-arranging the Icons in the Tools folder. I wanted to move all the folders up, and there you go! After I went back to the Start menu I found the folders again there as before. How is that possible?? Can somebody recreate that phenomenon on his HD2 too?

yes. Anything (icon or folder) that you "move to top" will appear in the (root) start folder, irrespective of which (sub)folder it is living in. Do a "move down" and it will disappear. Weird logic.

Yep, that's right. I noticed that too. You just have to leave the icons as they are. If you try to move them, they'll show in the root folder again!

OK guys, I did not beleave that until I tried all of it. And you are absolutely right. Anyway, it makes no sense at all. I would like to understand why it is like that, and what to do to solve that phenomenon. Does anybody know a workaround? Meaning a way to avoid "traveling" or "disappearing" folders when somebody just wants to move them up or down?

I have the solution.
I arranged my icons in folders yesterday. I noticed that the icons that i moved to top before moving them in folders had doubles.
So for every double that i had i would cut the icon from the folder and paste it outside the start menu Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder, just in the start menu (where you see the programs and settings folders), and than, cut and paste it in the folders they came from (putting the icons back).
The stat menu needs to see the icon is not there anymore, and will delete the fact that it has such an icon and when you put it back it will be in the right place.

In the new wm6.5.3 u can move icons and folders as u like without making copies of them, so just wait for an rom upgrade or flash custom wm6.5.3 rom.

Oh, does that mean that the new official 1.66.4xx.x ROM with Windows Mobile 6.5 21869 (that is just arriving these days) does not solve this problem? That sucks, god alone knows if and when Windows Mobile 6.5.3 will arrive... or even the Windows Mobile Version 6.6...

have you checked what is inside the HKLM\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start\ ...

Sure, I mentioned that already in a earlier post. The registry is clean, the double entries are not there. Strange huh?

For future reference, 6.6 is 6.5.3. Microsoft relabeled it to placate us for not releasing WM7 when they originally said they would.

Thank you johncmolyneux, that was new to me. Any insight about the release date?

Games Folder

Here's what happened...
There was an icon inside my games folder that didnt do anything. Clicking it just gave me an error (forgot the error already). I took the risk and deleted the icon. After a reset, my Games folder was showing up as an ordinary folder (no card icon below it).
Can anyone copy their Games folder and attach to this post??? Or maybe just give me the solution...
~ishtangli
maybe that's a glitch in the system files... why don't you just hard reset your phone? back up your contacts and calendar of course..
Attached is the file you have deleted. This file is the icon for the Games folder (it's actually a shortcut file). You can customize the icon of any folder by creating a file named "icon.lnk" with a content similar below:
1#ceshell.dll,-162
Using a 3rd party File Explorer (e.g. Resco), you will be able to see this file. Using the defaul File Explorer, you will only be able to see this file when you turn on "View All Files" option (tap and hold on any open area of the default File Explorer and this option will be shown on the context menu).
In my experience, this icon appears inside the Games folder when I go through Start -> Programs -> Games when the "View All Files" option is turned on. Try turning it off and this icon file disappears.
Have fun,
YajP
Marc,
It would take too long to restore all my applications and settings if i Hard Reset.
File didnt work. Placed it inside the Games folder and reset my device. Have you had experience restoring any of these icon files?
~ishtangli
Nope, didn't have such problem. I also deleted that icon.lnk in the Games folder before thinking that it was installed wrongfully by some of the 3rd party apps... to my surprise, the Games folder was reduced to an ordinary folder icon when I go to the Programs menu. So what I did was got that file from one of my colleagues, copied it to my device and tried to solve the issue of hiding that icon file. Below are the current screen shots from my pocket pc... hope it helps...
ishtangli, my ROM is still the stock one: 1.66 WWE... so am not sure if the functionality was changed in other ROM upgrades (1.72, WM2003SE) =)
that's a very possible suggestion! i think the functionality wouldnt change in other rom versions.. i'd say go with the RESCO solution
Maybe some kind soul could post their entire games folder...
~ishtangli
Here it is...
still didnt work. hmmm.... seems kinda simple but it just wont work. WM2003SE thing?!?! Whatever it is, im not hard resetting my device just to get some damn icon back. Thanks guys! If you find any solution, post it here aite...
~ishtangli
Games Icon
Try this.
Download, unzip and copy the icon.lnk file within to the /Windows/Start Menu/Programs/Games folder.
It is a shortcut to target the shell *.dll file that contains the icon that is displayed for the games folder: shellres.dll,-8229
So that must be the difference, the link to the icon file...
from
1#ceshell.dll,-162 (ROM1.66)
to
shellres.dll,-8229 (WM2003SE)...
Yeah

[APP] (20/08/09) HideFolder - Show/Hide Folders in HTC Album (CAB)

Update
I have now created a CAB for the script.
It will install a link to the program in Programs under the Start Menu.
IMPORTANT: You need to have MortScript installed. There is a CAB in \Program Files\HideFolder. If you already have MortScript you can delete this CAB.
The new cab is at the end of this post.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hiding folders from HTC Album has been discussed elsewhere, maybe for different reasons than mine !
When I select 'Storage Card' a list of folders appear that have no interest to me and do not contain any images that are mine.
I have written a script that allows you to Show or Hide folders from HTC Album. I included the ability to 'Show' folders in the event that you may want to temporarily hide a folder but re-enable it at some point.
You need to have Mortscript installed on your device !
Unzip the file and copy to your device.
When you run the script you will be given a choice whether you want to:
1) Show a Folder
2) Hide a Folder
3) Exit the Script
When you select Show or Hide you will then be asked to select the folder.
If you select Show: A previously hidden folder will be enabled (If the folder is not hidden you will get a message informing you of the error)
A confirmation message will be displayed and you are done.
If you select Hide: The selected folder will now be hidden from HTC Album (If the folder is already hidden you wil get a message informing you of the error)
A confirmation message will be displayed and you are done.
I've run the script in as many combinations as I can think of and all seems to work, please let me know if there is something I hae missed.
CAB Now available see above.
Thanks for such a necessary utility, I was actually looking for this for some days now...I needed this... you know to hide some things when your is taken over by some enthusiast who wants to check out everything in it and occasionally press wrong links....
This app. does its work what it supposed to do but I have Resco photo manager installed the hidden folder is visible in this photo manager...is there a way it could be hidden to resco as well.
great,
is this also possible for HTC Music Player ß
I don´t want to see my ringtones and others on the SD card.
thanks
I edit the registry to hide the folders. This saves me a lot of work. Simple enough. Thanks

Apologies
Hi All,
I am really sorry that I have not been able to respond to recent requests.
I have some personal stuff going on at the moment which has meant my head has been inserted up an unattractive part of my body.
I am sorting myself out and will try to help where I can in the next few days.
Apologies and thanks in adavnce for your understanding.
Hide more then one folder????
it seems as if i can only hide 1 folder and not multipl folders. How can I hide multiple different folders? When i attempt to do another folder the error always says this folder is already hidden and its not.
Thanks man, nice little app!!

It does'nt work.
I tried to do what in "Leo Hints & Tips" for exp:
"1. Enable Hidden Default Games
Go to the Windows directory and copy bubblebreaker.exe and solitaire.exe to the games folder as shortcuts in Windows\Start Menu. Make sure to unhide system files to see the games listed."
I can't copy files as instructed (working with total commander) and if the files were copied I can't reach/see them.
I think you may have misunderstood the original instructions.
Open file manager (not total commander) and navigate to Windows folder.
Locate the file BubbleBreaker (it's 46K, not one of the others)
Highlight it and keep it pressed till you get the menu with "Copy" in it. Do Copy.
Scroll back to the top and go into "Start Menu\Programs\Games".
Do "Menu, Edit, Paste Shortcut".
As I'm a pedant, I renamed the shortcut, removing the "Shortcut to" prefix.
Then, when you go Start Menu & then Games, BubbleBreaker is in there.
Now I've just done that exactly as typed above, whilst describing it for you, so it should work for you.
Let us know if you still have a problem.
Hi,
It works!
Now I got the idea.
Thanks.

Don't know what to say mate - it's in my Windows folder. There's a bunch of files called eT9.Rhodium.xxxx and then eT9MyWords is after them (directly after eT9DeadKeys).
I take it you did unhide system files as previously suggested? (I'm not sure if you need to do that for the games suggestion).
I have a slide deferent question. I would like to delet exe file from thew windows folder but I can't because I can't select Delete, have anyone some advice?
delete exe file
it has been awhile since i have done this, also some files are impossible or almost impossible to delete.
if you have been trying to do it from ur phone, go instead, to your active sync/windows mobility center. click file mgt and browse contents of device, navigate to the exe u want to delete. i have done it before and it has worked on several ocassions. be careful on what u r deleting, you may want to do a google on it b/f u do it
if this does not do it, i got no clue hope this helps someone
johncmolyneux - special thanks to u for the hidden games trick, ? are there any other hidden games in the hd2 winmo 6.5 professional, or where i may find out?

how can I recover start menu

Incidentally I have deleted both folders (programs) in Start menu folder
What would be the easiest way to recover all shortcuts (without reinstalling ROM again)?

Rom - 1.66.405.2 (76641) wwe
Here you go mate. It's the program folder (from \windows\start menu\) zipped up.
Now be careful with it in future lol
Thank you
I can now add programs to quick links, but I still can't see anything inside start menu

Bizarre. Have you restarted since copying the shortcuts? (I don't actually believe that it will help, but it may)
I have restarted, it didn't help
There was another folder inside start menu (beside programs).
I am missing that one too Could you send me this one too, please

The settings folder is empty for everyone, that's why I just gave you the programs folder. It's thrown me that you can't see anything in your start menu, even though you can add quicklinks. Maybe a hard reset is called for. That will definitely fix it, but it's obviously a pain.
I'll play a bit with [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start]

Help a Windows Mobile Newb....

Sorry...As a former Symbian user (and Mac user) I am not so familiar with Windows Mobile file management.
How can I organize my apps into the folders I have in my "Start" menu?
Whenever I install something, it just dumps it there. I assume there must be a way to do it, but I cannot figure it out.
Thanks.
(Hoping it is not a registry tweak...why is nothing simple on Windows?)
try going through file manager and creating a new fodlers and move apps to that?
as above answer, but don't try moving anything pre installed because they will re appear when you soft reset.(I'm thinking particularly of the htc apps. there is a tweak to prevent it, but it can be surprising the first time you see it happen)
Sorry, but can I just move the apps to the pre-existing folders, say....
"Games"
or
"Internet," etc?
I want to just move them. How do I do that using the file manager?
I see a "Send..." option, but I am not sure what part of the file to send. IS that how I would 'move' something to a folder?

It's a bit of a pain with file manager as you can (usually) only do 1 file at a time. Long-hold a shortcut and select cut. Then go to the folder you want it in and do menu, edit, paste.
If you use something like Resco Explorer or Total Commander then you can do multiple files at a time.

from what i understand you just want to reorganize your start menu to look cleaner.
in the start menu you have shortcuts and folders. to access them you need to start file explorer and go to: my device > windows > start menu > programs. then just cut & paste
if you want, you can also make new folders - just tap on menu in file explorer.
some of the shortcuts/folders will reappear after reset. to prevent this you need to do a trick you can find under the "tips, tricks and reg tweaks" thread.
Thanks to all...got it...so far!

If I just boot my HD2 and go to the Start menu... all I see is the list of programs that I wish to move. If I long press on them, it says, "move to top"

Open file manager and navigate to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs then follow the instructions above to cut and paste the shortcuts.
I assume you'll want to create folders to put some shortcuts in, and you do that by going to menu and then new folder.
