i dont know what happened, but it seems that after i installed some apps my keyboard is now equipped with japanese text as an option...and its quite annoying because when i switch back and forth between letters and #s instead of just english letters and #s, theres english letters, jap, and then #s.
anyone know how i can turn this off?
i tried the keyboard setting but there's no "turn off" option.
there's a turn off under "choose key type" in the japanese keyboard settings but that doesn't do squat.
any inputs will be appreciated.
ok this might seem strange but what you need to do first is go to locale and text and change your locale to something random it doesn't matter. when you do that it changes the keyboard to that language and automatically goes back to the standard keyboard (you can check to see yourself) now switch the locale to your original country and it should be back to the standard keyboard. I'm not sure if you use the standard keyboard or android keyboard but if it is the latter and you don't know how to switch, just long press the text bar which is the lowest left key and select input method. For some odd reason you can't simply long press the text bar to switch back from Japanese which is a WEIRD ass glitch
i actualy didnt know about the android keyboard until now
whats the difference?
edit: nvm got it. thanks! i think i like the android keyboard better.

Quickest way to change keyboard is to touch and hold on a text area
till the pop-up appears, then click on Input Method then select either the android or the Standard keyboard. The differences ain't so much... the best way to find out which you prefer is to try them. If you want to revert back just repeat the above stages.
Personally I use the Japanese keyboard.. but that's because I'm using it to write in Japanese.
Good luck.

works fine on mine... I just check it
(text area is the white box where text would normally appear, if you would type something)
BTW, if you switch the keyboard to Japanese, denoted by the "あ" symbol the caps-lock will now show a hammer & spanner. Clicking on it will also bring up the input menu. Alternatively you can go about the long way around and go directly into settings either by the menu key at the home screen; or via the applications tray. Think that's all the methods...

what he said. the japanese keyboard is AWESOME.
what sucks is that the japanese keyboard is included with any locale settings right ? but i type in japanese AND chinese so if i have to type a sms in chinese, i have to go to locale and switch to china. SUCKS !
So, the stock G1 virtual keyboard sucked compared to the HTC_IME keyboard. How's the virtual keyboard on the G2? Is there a calibration tool?
Enquiring minds want to know
8-9 hours and counting down until my G2 arrives...
Mine arrived with Swype set as the default keyboard. It's usable, but takes some getting used to with the whole finger-gymnastics thing. It also accepts typing like a standard on-screen keyboard... I'm finding that a bit easier to use than on the G1 mostly due to the larger screen size. I don't see a way to calibrate it in the settings, but it's got a couple of options for adjusting frequency of the word choice window and speed vs. accuracy.
Yea in using the default Swype. Its pretty good, just takes some time to get use to. I find myself being a letter off somethings. But the better screen makes vk way better then the g1 u git more space

Thanks all, I'd forgotten about the fact that swype was the default. I'm interested in trying it. It's supposed to be quick and easy once you get used to it.
Is the regular android keyboard available?
Yes, you can disable Swype and use the standard Android keyboard, in the Language & Keyboard settings. Long-tapping a text field to change the input method also lets you switch between 'em on the fly if you have both enabled (default settings have 'em both enabled).
I use the stock keyboard over swype. The froyo keyboard if you have never used it is ten times better than 1.6. They continue to improve the keyboard and honestly I don't need another keyboard besides swype (I use it from time to time). Trust me you won't have issues with it. You can drag up and the numbers and symbols will show up for quick selection without having to enter symbol key.

Sweet, I've never used the Froyo vk. I've practically never used the stock pre-Froyo because it was so bad and the HTC was so much better. I'm looking forward to both the Froyo standard and the swype.
Thanks
My phone is coming in today. Sometimes the UPS guy arrives before I get home (4:30) but usually they show up between 5 and 7pm. If it's not there when I get home, I suspect I'm going to pace back and forth staring at the front door like a tiger at the zoo.
Hi, does anyone know how to advance to a new line using the google virtual keyboard? I think it's call "carriage return" and skips to a new line for continued typing.
I figured out on the slide out key board that holding the ALT and hitting Enter, skips to the next line without sending the text. But, can't see a feature on the touch keyboard.
It seemed to work fine by just pressing enter. BUT i'm using this keyboard.

To get it just download the Froyo 2.2 edition, unzip the files, and install both apk files onto your device using the astro or whatevery file manager you want. Then in setting change the keyboard.

Yes, I agree, on the Keyboard hitting <enter>, while composing an email, will advance to a new line, but hitting <enter> while composing an SMS will send, unless you hold <alt> first then hit <enter>.
Just wondering if you can line advance while using the touch-keypad as there is no <enter> button. It gets replaced by the smiley face when in the messaging app.

Sorry, ddgarcia05, misread your reply. I thought you said "the" keyboard, not "this" keyboard. i'll check it out. Thanks for the info.
Tiger you mean the stock keyboard or is there a "google" keyboard? I just composed a text message with both the stock and physical keyboard. When I pressed the <enter> key on both the physical and softkey it jumped to new line. It did not send the text.
my stock soft keyboard (the one with swype) Where the <enter> key is in the messaging app, there's a < > in its place - there is no <enter>. Do you have the swype active. Maybe that's it.
I took pictures of the keyboard in email and messaging. You see the difference on the same key from app to app.
I find that in the Messenger app Swype does not have an enter key or return key. Upon using the Handcent app I find that it does have a return key which will advance you one line at a time. I don't know why but on the market app Handcent Swype works differently than on the stock messaging. I like Handcent much better than the stock app. Hope this helps.
Thanks tenbeau. Lots of people seem to be recommending Handcent for texting.
I updated my wifes stock ATT streak from 1.6 to 2.2 using qdl tool. Everything went great without any errors. It is currently set for the swype keyboard. The usual setting to switch the default keyboard is not there. The settings for the swype keyboard and the android keyboard are all there. She hates the swype keyboard and wants to switch to the android keyboard. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Long press in a text field should bring up a menu, you should see 'input method'. touch that, should bring up keyboards...
Resolved
That worked thanks for the help.
My girlfriend has an Aria, and recently tried to install a new keyboard. We went into the keyboard settings and checked the new keyboard, but whenever the new keyboard comes up, it's the stock HTC one. Has anyone else experienced this?
You have to long press in a text box then choose input method you can then choose the new keyboard there

yes, although you enabled the new keyboard, you didn't choose it as your default keyboard.
open something where you can type (text message, note, browser address bar, whatever). press in the text area and hold your finger there until a box pops up. this box should have your keyboard options, select whichever you would like to use.
I am still trying to figure out how to get a keyboard with voice options so i can talk into it

The stock Aria keyboard has a microphone icon on the bottom left. Press it and it will enable voice recognition.
Note: only works whilst connected to the internet.
If you can get your hands on a copy of the newest swype that
has the option for audio input as well. Not sure if the beta is still open or not.
