T-mobile is offering unlimited GPRS service for $50/month, which is insane since they used to offer it for $20. They do have a plan for blackberries with minutes that doesn't seem too unreasonable, but it is WAP service. Is this worth getting? What is the difference? Thanks.
-Ross
GPRS is way way way better than WAP, faster too. With GPRS speeds are similar to a 56k modem, WAP is something like a 14.4k modem (I think it's 11k but I can't remember). With WAP you pay for the time you spend online, with GPRS you pay for the data you download and can use the phone whilst connected to GPRS. Get GPRS.
Regards,
Neil.
wap = whatever content they have on their network/server
gprs = anything on the internet.
be warned that some scumbag providers call wap gprs. I have been trapped like this about 12 months ago by vodafone. At the time their own network could not support billing full gprs so after some serious complaining over the service I got I ended up with a company called martin doors who was a partner with vodafone (vodafone do have it now though).
Here I pay 2.5c/kb. $50 usd is high but if I used it unlimited it would be way more.
Actually, WAP is the "highway" as it were, with GPRS and GSM being the actual types.
GPRS is pay per KB,
GSM is pay per minute.
If the two offers were unlimited gprs and unlimited wap, is their any other difference besides speed?
I did not know that wap was available via dial up. My only acces to it was through gprs. What I was getting at was the content. With vodafone AU the internet is only available through "full" gprs, ie you could not go to this site through the wap connection.
Anyway gprs/gsm is the same thing just put to different use.
In the Netherlands TMO offers gprs unlimited 'Internet Totaal' (includes wifi hotspot usage & meant for laptops etc) access for €50 per month & they offer 'Pocket Internet Totaal' for only €9.50 per month (unlimited gprs access & hotspot usage meant for pda's). So it's exactly the same thing even on the phone bill, only the pockey version includes a €40 discount. Guess which contract I'm having with about 200MB usage a month ;-)
Complain about it, refer to it. More European countries offer this scheme. Maybe it works.
Good luck, M
"Actually, WAP is the "highway" as it were, with GPRS and GSM being the actual types. "
no GPRS and GSM are the "highway" as in the connection type
over which HTML or WAP is transmittet
WAP is a sad subset of HTML and require ones operator to make links before one can access a wap page unlike normal internet
I am trying to configure my wizard (8125 lokiwiz unlocked) to work on my tmobile data plan.I don't have the unlimited internet and hotspot plan for tmobile, i have the unlimited WAP plan. I just can't figure out how to get it to work, the tmobile tech people didnt sound experienced with the wizard but they said its possible. Do any of you know teh correct settings and how to enter them. I was able to work it out on WM2003 but WM5 is really confusing. Perhaps someone with an MDA and the similar plan could let me know what theirs is configured for.

I saw the issue of tmobile's WAP discussed I believe on howardforums.com . At least from what I remembered from the discussion was that tmobile was to be fading out its WAP service which also had unintended consequences for people using tmobile's blackberry sevices. I did however download the tmobile cab files from club-imate which placed a wap configuration for tmobile in My Work Network configurations setup. Good luck.
Bro, its simple, go to settings, connections, connections, then add a new modem connection, Then put in where it says "enter a name for the connection" T-Mobile GPRS Wap" or what ever your want. Then below select GPRS where it says select a modem. click on next after that and enter in wap.voicestream.com then click on next and then finish. You do not need to put anything else in. Thats it your are done. I have five PPC from the XDA on up and no problems on any.
Cheers,
Mike
thanks mike, hmm now the phone just says locating... if i try to load a wap site like wap.yahoo.com for instance. I am connected to the GPRS connection, its just not loading up sites.
hey eb, was that cab from an original tmobile rom, or was it part of the euro tmobile roms that was just released. I have been looking for a copy of the tmobile rom from back in nov.

The tmobile cab I got from clubimate is for the US, and as far as I can tell it is not the euro tmobile settings. I also tried the wap connect and got dumped into my GPRS connection to. The steps Mike described is how it looks in my network connections. I remember back when tmobile was voicestream and using my laptop via cellphone to connect, one had to start at voicestream's wap home page. Just a suggestion.
try a differnt AP like internet2.voicestream.com
some people have had success using that....I myself discourge this, however, it works it works...
internet2.voicestream.com or internet3.voicestream.com will only work if you have a tmobile unlimited internet account which is 19.99 a month not a wap account. What services are on your account?
mike you're right....i thought he had the 19.99 unlim internet plan...i think he needs a t-mo proxy for it to work....i'll google this and post back later...
okay here's what i found....i think the proxy thing is the what might be relevant..
http://www.mobilegadgetnews.com/lofiversion/index.php?t9404.html
That is correct, for the wap, and mms the proxy has to be put in. I am soooo lazy. I reflash my Universal so much, I got tired of putting the mms setting back in. LOL
Mike
hmm so after messing around with more settings, still nothing works. Perhaps its because im trying to connect to restricted WAP sites. anyone know the tzones website/homepage? Or perhaps someone that actually has the correct settings for $9.99 tzones on a WIzard can help me with the settings.
Just put out 19.99 and you will have full access!

I was told they no longer had the 19.99 plan, that it is only the 29.99 plan. What's the trick to still getting the 19.99 plan?
Dawm that includes hotspots now. I was paying 19.99 for gprs and 19.99 for hotspot service. Heh. I guess they don't have 19.99 gprs internet only now. Sucks. But thanks, I am going to call and save 10.00 a month. hehe
Mike
They are getting rid of the back door to using the WAP as online access for the PDA's. They are going to go to the full data. You will have to have the 29.99 Total Internet Plan which is unlimited data and email and hotspot. There were a lot of people paying the lower amounts and trying to use it on the PDA and it was causing issues and the data group had to try and solve them and there were things that just couldn't be solved becuase the provisiong of the WAP is different then the internet2.voicestream.com. Just pay the 30 bucks and get it all.
I Unlocked my 8125 for cingular so i could use my t-mobile sim in it.... I got it to unlock with no problem.... My Frined who works for t-mobile told me that my internet would not work with it unless i got it flashed.... COuld Any1 Help Me It would be greatly appreciated!!!!

If the SIM works for phone calls it should work for data. Provided of course you actually have a data plan with t-mobile and the correct settings in your connection settings.
I had the t-mobile sidekick unlimited plan.... and i called trying to see what was wrong and they said the sidekick plan only worked on a sidekick.... So for it to work on the 8125 i would have to get unlimited internet whice for 29.99... and i was paying 20.0 a month for unlimited internet email aim so what should i do unlimtied text itself is 14.99

I guess it depends what you want to use it for - True internet which means the 29.99 plan, some people have had some joy with the blackberry plan though I have recently had to change because T-Mobile appears to be cutting people off using that on the MDA/8125. If you pick the internet plan then you can use a messaging program which uses GPRS to send messages rather than the crappy text messaging (sms) product that comes with the MDA/8125.

Can any confirm or deny if T-mo is cutting users with the BB plan off or making them switch to the $30/month plan? Also, has anyone tried using the $5.99 "T-mobile Web" data plan with their MDA/8125? Does it function just like a normal GPRS connection or does the portal limit ports (i.e. AIM ports for chatting). Thanks.
If i sign up for the T-Mobile US T-zones 5.99 plan will i be able to access internet through my pocket pc or do i have to pay for the 30.00 plan?
My Phone = T-Mobile MDA US
IPL/SPL 2.26
G3
CID/SIM unlocked
Xplore 2.0 WM6 ROM
You might wanna ask T-Mobile for that? Wouldn't help ya if somebody says YES and it was not true in the end ...

Just purchase the 5.99 plan. Then edit ur existing connection and select this network connects thru proxy server and put this in the proxy box. getmorespeed.voicestream.com or getmorespeed.voicestream.net. and you will then be able to access full internet
alright thanks, now all i have to do is buy the plan.
Currently, Tmobile has unlocked their network, so you won't need to use a proxy to get online. You will have full access through the $5.99/month plan.
I've had the T-Mobile 5.99 web package for 2 years now and I've always been able to access any web page I want. It's definitely not the speediest though.
It seems that Tmobile has locked their network again. It's back to proxy 216.1551.65.50:8080 people.

Does this mean that by using this proxy, all ports are open for the web? Or only specific are allowed?

Does this work for t-mobile to go prepaid or only for contracts? i tried putting in the setting's for it and it does'nt work. and which one exactly do you have to input in the proxy server? 216.1551.65.50 or getmorespeed.voicestream.com??

This should work for both if you are paying for the T-Zones. I used to be on T-Zones and T-Mobile used to lock and unlock the ports (HTTP,FTP,POP,SMTP,etc.) from time to time. But now they have unlocked the ports. So the best way to get a cheap plan with all ports unblocked is to get the Blackberry Data Plan that costs $20. It does not have the HotSpots stuff, only GPRS access. And if you have an EDGE device or even better a 3G device, you will have great speeds on your mobile phone. But if you want both GPRS and HotSpot, then go with the $30 Data Plan.
As for the proxy, you will enter 216.155.65.50 (you got an extra 1 in 155). The getmorespeed.voicestream.com is for the APN that you input when creating the connection.

hi, ive had the 5.99 plan for awhile, it works good with 216 proxy number, but the speed isnt fast, my apn name is wap.voicestream.com, and I tried getmorespeed.voicestream.com for AOn, but it did not work, can u please explain how do you have your settings configured
Use wap.voicestream.com instead. As far as I know, getmorespeed.voicestream.com no longer works. Atleast it doesn't work fo me either.
I am using internet2.voicestream.com since I have the $20 plan. I don't need a proxy for this data plan.
- TKN
it's wap.voicestream.com for the 5.99/plan, internet2.voicestream.com for the 19.99 plan. You only need the 19.99 plan if you plan on using your phone as a modem...
I cannot wait to try this $20 plan with a 3G enabled phone and see what speeds I will get ...

i just found out that t-mobile has a new 9.99 data plan for the internet...i was thinkin about getting this rather than the 24.99 plan for the t-mobile wing internet...does anybody know te proxy settings that would allow me to use the 9.99 plan on my wing to use internet explorer?
and if not can someone tell me the proxy settings for the 5.99 t-zones plan?
thank u
The $9.99 plan isn't for smartphones. I went to tmobile.com and selected a standard phone with a basic plan (just to see available services) and then switched the phone at check out and selected a Dash... The $9.99 plan isn't offered with the Dash. So I suppose you could pop your sim in a standard headset and order the $9.99 plan and switch it out to see if it works. Just to warn you, even if it does work, it's only 50mb. Tmo says it's for casual web browsing. You could burn through that pretty quickly if you use your phone to watch videos or stream podcast.
that will not work. i had the 9.99 plan for my motorola and switched to wing and had to upgrade to 24.99. its not the same kind of data plan.
oh okay i was jus wondering
I met an ex Tmo employee that said in some states those proxy hacks work, but where I am in Michigan they won't. Why the hell that is... I don't know? I was never able to get the $4.99 proxy hack working when I got my wing.

edit it work on another phone that i have though
how much data can you use before they get mad at you?
tzones hack
well there are some steps missing i have had the 4.99 since the dinosaurs have roomed the earth and i have had no issues. ok heres the hack
apn= wap.myvoicestream.com
proxy 216.155.165.50 port 8080 (or 216.155.165.50:8080)
or if yer brave
apn= epc.tmobile.com
then check "this network connects to the internet"
no proxie. the second one allows for streaming while the other one does not. and the second one is quicker then the first happy hackin ^_^

I have the T-Mobile Total Internet Add-On on my plan, and edge is working fine on my unlocked E61i .. but I've put the SIM in a loaner Touch Pro 2.
Calls work fine, actually I even have the gmail application working fine, as well as active sync with google for contacts and calendar.
Opera and IE both give me Gateway Timeouts.
I have a comm connection set up for Cellular Line (GPRS,3G) to internet2.voicestream.com with all auth info blank.
It looks like it's trying to communicate over EDGE then dies. I've tried setting it up multiple times and rebooting the phone. No dice.
Well, that's strange.. I suppose this phone's Opera and IE have some strange modification..
I loaded SkyFire onto it and it's working fine.. nevermind I suppose..
