Powering Hero is 528MHz processor virtually identical to one inside the Dream and Magic, and it has the same 288MB of RAM as the latter. Frankly, it's not enough. At least not with HTC's custom user interface, more than a couple of widgets and an application running. Killing all of the widgets—especially the Twitter one—does help. But moments where the phone does nothing for a second or three after you've tapped, flicked or swiped happens far too often. Which is to say, a lot, especially after it's been on for more than an hour. Fast, totally smooth transition animations are infrequent enough I'm pleasantly surprised when a desktop screen immediately and gracefully slides to the left or right without a hiccup. It's frustrating"
sounds like it doesn't that much better than hero on our g1's, which is sad for such a lovely gui.
tho I all I would really want from rosie/sense/touchflo is people/albums twitter and facebook integration as well as the twitter widget.
to really i'd love to have all the damned widgets, even the stock widget that no one here seem's to want, onyl if they could integrate it w/ google finance for the most real-time pricing available for free.
im running off on tangents tho..so i will stop..
Don't put to much stock in the engadget or gizmodo reviews. It's hard to get a earnest review of anything other than Iphones from either site. Some people in the gizmodo thread state that there is a clas4 card included with the kits, and swapping it out for a class6 makes the sluggishness go away. Apparently hero uses a swap file aswell. It would be interested to see them retest with a class6 card. Head off to some of the other sites and you will find reviews that explicitely say they DID NOT notice the sluggishness.
It's also noted that alot of the widgets only update when the phone wakes, some of that bogging could simply be the edge connections choking truing to update all the widgets, of which im sure they loaded every possible page full.
It would be very interesting to see if the class4 sd card really is the bottleneck. If it is, i would like these guys to eat crow for lunch. Even HTC is puzzled by the fact that some people report no issues, while the highest profile sites report its just abysmal. I'm getting one regardless, when the NA 3g band version is available, even if it was sluggish, one cyanogen and the gang get ahold of it, it's a wrap.
I believe Android itself is part of the bottleneck - the Dalvik VM makes everything unbearably slow. Hopefully HTC will make use of the NDK.
There are several comments from actual Hero users who say that a lot of the sluggish behaviour was gone when they didn't use the Class 4 MicroSD card and used Class 6 instead, which indicates a problem with the IO as Android uses the mem card for its swap file. That means its not the processing time when all these apps are running concurrently afterall. Food for thought..
I've read both the gizmodo and engadget reviews, as mentioned before, both sites do have a bias towards the iPhone, but I found that engadget's review of the hero to be quite objective in their testing. As for the gizmodo review, they seemed ready to hate it as soon as they didn't see an apple logo on it.
I think Hero is just poorly coded. Have you watched the logs on this thing? Providers in Providers, hundreds of BroadcastReceivers, its crazy. To do anything on the device 100 different apps wake up.

My G1 running Hero is NOT slow at all:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxLZOhUA3R0
I don't know if you guys remember, but the original release of android was also plagued with sluggishness when it first came out. Browser scrolling was choppy, using browser and then going back home would cause a re-load (on a stock system). The hero is not much more different than then Dream in terms of hardware (the qualcomm processor uses the same ARM core, and I believe the only change between it and the Dream's is improvements in the radio), much more like the sapphire. I was too disapointed when I saw videos of the Hero device and saw slowdowns and sluggishness, and like Cyanogen pointed out, HTC basically built Touch-flo on top of running android processes without caring for either disabling or reusing them. The size of HTC's framework is about as big as the original Android system (considering how much of android they've taken off too).
I also have to wonder, though what it is people are perceiving as "speed". If, like Breakthecycle2, you're reffering to speed as just flicking the home screen from side to side without slowdown, then you're just considering the UI aspect of the whole system (and only the home app at that).
A system that runs lean, boots fast, keeps all systems shut until they're required, and is able to start them quickly on demand is really a fast system, and android sucks at that. Android is much like vista, it likes keeping the memory full and all services ready to make up for the shortcomings of running a VM, but the Dream is not a desktop computer, nor does it come equiped with 4 gb or ram where you can get away with doing just so.
I don't believe it's gonna change anymore either, programmers, companies, nobody really cares about optimizing runtimes anymore. We've been spoiled with increased capacities, speeds, etc that we're completely comforatble with wasting resources to use shortcut instead of solving challenges programatically (ie, loading up bitmaps instead of creating and using vectors, just because we have the storage for them and it's easier), and companies will settle with "good enough" or "fast enough" just to make a profit, after all, if it's selling, why spend money on improving it?
I am trying hard, coming from android but its very difficult the apps are so lacking. I do miss my google sky maps, and my real working gps. For some reasons gps on the HD2 is garbage, I dont even know if it works.
Open market is a big help on the HD2, and following a lot of tweaks, its manageable , I dont want to risk flashing it.
Any app recommends?
flash the device
resco explorer is good
zenonia is a great game for windows as is ivy the kiwi
what else? chainfire graphic acceleration
gtx5 theme
I don't do gps really at all...never have so that's an app I don't use...
tcpmp/coreplayer will help
Dutty's Task Manageris a must have.
I would post the link but I'm not allowed to since I'm a new member. You can find it in the Apps repository thread.
HD2
Hi,
I too came back to Winmo from android, and to be quite honest I miss nothing.
Yes I dont have the cool Bic concert lighter app, or the flashing cop car light app, but the phone does what its supposed to do. Its a productivity thing.
Keeps track of my work Exchange account, my other 3 email accounts. Edits Office documents on the fly, oh and has the best screen ever placed on a phone.
And the GPS works great on this phone. No you cant get the free turn by turn Google app, but for 29 bucks (its a steal) you can get Co-Pilot, which works well and doesnt require an internet connection to guide you. Try out the Co-Pilot, it works really well for me, and it now has TTS for street announcement and free live local search!
fhaines
Your GPS works fine, open google maps, hit menu, press "Use GPS", then press the small blue box which contains a small light blue dot on the bottom right side of the screen. Be sure to give the phone enough time to connect to the satellites displayed on the top right side of your screen.
I've never had a better GPS on any phone.
I like my HD2 after using it over 2 weeks.
However, I wish the standard keyboard was better. I HATE hitting the 'xt9/abc' toggle when I want to hit a or z. I also HATE accidentally hitting the show/hide icon for the keyboard and hiding the keyboard while I'm typing. I converted over to Swype due to this.
I also wish the HTC Messaging app didn't lag. I makes the phone feel slow when I'm trying use this app.
I'm coming from android too and to be honest I was thinking on cooking my Own Rom cause all of the ROMs available are not to my liking either to sloooow or crappy icons or maybe missing some tweaks and home tabs BUT! I rather Go back to my android (Had it since day 1)
I given up hope on HD2 sad I know I expected to be WWAAAAYYYY much more of a better phone.
I got the phone 2 weeks ago But I find myself using my G1 more.
so I'll prob sell it on Craigslist and get a N1 (which was my actual fir option)
You will probably endup doing the same
I like my HD2 Hardware not the operating system
Bitter sweat to say the least. I really like this phone, it has some crazy advance features over today phones but the software (WindowMobile / Sense UI) has really let me down. I did my research (as I do with all phones) so I was really excited to try something new (I have an iPhone) but it's been more headaches than joy.
The only reason why Im holding on to it is in hopes WP7 or Android ROM comes soon, as of right now, I've swapped my sim back into my iPhone.
Well, I took the plunge and did what i feared the most. I added a ROM and I'm loving this phone. No more lag, freezes, bugs, or having to have 10 cabs installed.

best device i've owned (and i've had about 8). just get the tweaks so customize it and add a few key apps (for me: resco explorer, resco photo viewer, iGo8 -GPS - work great for me, & core player). my device runs almost flawlessly.
without a doubt this is the best windows mobile device I have run to date everything is flawless!\
trust me when I say this
MESS WITH A CUSTOM ROM
you will love your device. its as easy and fast as a jailbreak

If apps are you're looking for, it'd be best to go back to Android. Apps are not the strongest draw of the HD2. App development for windows mobile is essentially dead, as developers are now focusing on WP7.
On the note of GPS, it works great for me. I use it every morning on the way to work (helps me navigate around traffice jams).
So far love the build quality as its super solid with no slop like my former TILT and Fuze. The only issue I have is with the camera design which stick out too far and is unprotected from fingerprints and scuffs. The case they provide really doesn't shield it. WISH they would have kept the same design as the Euro/Asia specd HD2 so that accessories could be interchangable. They have some really good cases for the HD2 but not the TMobile versions. Getting screen protectors that truly fit and not leave gaps seems to be a problem as well. LOVE the screen and true capacitive touch.
Software so far - only owned it a week at most and its not been used all that much is pretty fast and the screen is amazing. Wished the bluetooth caller id announce worked and had the ability to record conversations which does not work. Status and other things work fine - so maybe they'll be some fix in the future.
BIG issue is with the 3g network reception. Goes from EDGE to 3g at will. Seems to lock on 3g when return from standby or power up for a few minutes then it will jump to E. Been doing this since I got it - don't think its a design/hardware issue just requires an update in the radio. Will not return it as in more populated areas it locks on 3g and stays locked. Will see. Had AT&T before so not too familiar with TMOBILE in my area. Download speeds are only in the 800 range. ATT in great area would get around 1200.
Voice quality so far is on par or better than AT&T but the volume could be a little higher even with it set full high.
For the price I paid with a new two year contract of (99 - discount code) 75 through a 3rd party and I get the AAA activation waived and 14% off my bill I definately can't complain. Ordered the phone last Monday - received it Wenesday.

If you're looking for a really nice case that protects the camera, check out the leather cases at noreve.com. The leather flip case is very nice and you get to choose from different leather types and colors. It's made for the euro version, but it fits my tmous hd2 fine. Protects real well, too. Dropped my hd2 on my driveway the other day... couple small scuffs on the case, but phone is fine.
I too came from android g1, I didnt realize how much i loved android when I first got the HD2, After I figured out how to operate it, took about 48 hours, figured out how to sync it with WMDC got all my contacts and email. IT FREAKIN ROCKS. I am so impressed with syncing up with outlook on my computer and to my hd2. I have pretty much found all the same type of comparable apps as android. but so i love it!
I have also flashed it with a new rom as as long as you follow the instructions step by step, and use tested radios and roms. watch youtube videos so you know what goes on with your phone during the process so you dont get freaked out.
Are You Happy-Discount?
stim141 spoke about a discount code...paying only $99.00, as well as other "deals." Where did you get that code and how do you apply it?
I'm, in LA been living on the Edge with my Advantage 7501 onTMobile. Would rather have 3G than Edge, and a slimmer device.
And what ever happened to the 4.8 inch HTC Thoth (Athena2)?

Hm people I have heard people say that ROM eats batteries. Nice to see yours is lasting longer. This is my top rom to use when I get the energy to root my phone, kinda scared as of now.
BUT YES..... I love my phone even through the freezes, bad reception, and constant 3g loss of signal.
I'm thinking of getting this amazing phone, but would like to find out what it's really like from you guys first before I make the purchase.
Well i loved it in the beginning, then after all the problems and issues such as lags, hangs, and GPS crap, i sold the phone. But since then I've been looking at other Android smart phones and none of them seem to be better currently.
So, I think i made the right choice by selling the phone (i sold it at a profit of US$100) now ....
then a few months later i will recheck if Samsung has fixed all these problems.. If they have, then i would repurchase the phone, and i'm sure at that time the price has dropped by quite a bit....
I just can't afford using a phone that gives all these problems at the moment.....
If samsung cannot fixe all these problems in the future then i'll choose something else....maybe 3 months from now there will be a pletora of good android smartphones....
Buying the phone right now would be unwise since you will be paying high price only to have to install this and that fixes and patches and hacks and what not in order to fix the all the bugs that samsung hasnt ironed out since launching the phone. Unless of course, that is your hobby....
But for me, if i had to do all these things with the phone, i wanna get paid by samsung.... not the other way around.....
I've got the Tmobile USA Vibrant version. I don't think the problems that are being reported are as prevalent as people might think - I believe that folks that aren't having any problems are not bothering to come to these forums on the web, researching issues, so who you see reporting problems are folks that are having issues, looking for solutions
there's also a certain percentage that are researching tips, improvements, shortcuts or tweaks (which is why i'm on the web).
My vibrant's gps is actually showing incredible accuracy, better than my MyTouch 3g and than my 2 yr old garmin nuvi 680 indoors where neither would show any satellites and the vibrant does, and outside it's faster than the garmin nuvi in calculating / recalulating but i suspect the A-GPS plays a major part in that.
the signal "issue" is a prime example of folks imagining an issue where there isn't one (think about it, the signal bars are reporting signal strength on the weak side and then when you choke the phone in the "death grip" it further degrades the displayed signal strength, but phone calls for the most part aren't dropping. That death grip is like putting your phone inside a metal soup can, and then wondering why signal dropped. Mine will show the weak signal when i death grip it but is still pulling 3G (at increased download speeds over my MyTouch 3G/HTC Magic) in a weak Tmobile coverage area
I've got no lag issues - but i haven't downloaded but a few apps, about 10, no task killers, and i really haven't used any of the samsung apps, as folks are reporting those seem to invite lag
for what it's worth, I'm extremely happy with this phone's performance.
I absolutely love mine. First smartphone, great GPS, good battery life, great apps, awesome screen, I can't put it down and I've had it for over a week.

I think you're right in your assessment of new people coming to forums and what not. It's a biased sample for sure, personally, I was waiting to get on device where I actually had a reason to be here, this is it. So, while I didn't come to fix issues, I have learned a fair share and helped out a bit.
I'm upto 150+ apps showing in LauncherPro drawer, this includes some factory installed items and doesn't include all of my widgets (I keep two running at all times) and other things. My main lag only occurs during software installs, other than that everything else feels blazingly fast.
Really like this phone. After suffering the window mobile, this is definitely a great phone to have.
Its this or iphone. I have use iphone and I don't miss it one bit.

I am in same boat the OP, I am close to getting it, but what I am hearing is a somewhat mixed bag. Really would love to heard the good and the bad about the phone.
So far the biggest gripes I have come across are lack of notification light (I would miss that), lag on the other hand fix makes it even faster , lack of camera flash. But i really like what I have seen what the Hummingbird can do..

Here's a good write-up of "the good and the bad" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730131
The poll thus far seems fairly conclusive though.
bottom line is that if you are prepared to do a little customising then it can be the best phone out there atm (and lets face it why go android if you dont want to customise? thats what the iphones for right?...)
its only going to get better too as time goes on.
JF3 firmware out of the box and you may run into a couple of problems.
I own mine now for about 3 weeks and over all i heavy use it, my girl friend tells me that i touch my phone more often and tender then her which i think its an indicator of how much i love my Phone, even for native Xvid Support.
But of course there are thinks i really dont like at the Phone. I have much lags, but i also use much and diffarent kind of software at the same time. So maybe i have lesser lags if i dont use the phone like a Hardcore Home PC.
But there is one kind i think its an Knock Out Death Reason to not buy.the Phone before these Bug isnt fixed in an Newer Original Samsung FW.
The Timestamps of the Digital Camera are not written on File System layer. Of corse the are correctly written into EXIf and the digital image where named to the exact TimeStamp, but no attributes in the Fat are written. So if you organize your Pictures on a Nas, you can run into really big troubles.
But i hope thes issue will fixed in the next FW update.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
I'm loving mine, though it really did need to be rooted and the minfree* settings tweaked, the defaults are very bad - Samsung should be fixing this in the new firmware for all devices though. I have very few issues with the device and things I thought were potential problems before I bought it have turned out to be less so.
- Lack of search button/it's integration into the menu button is fine - I was worried because I used menu longpress to hide/show the keyboard a lot on my magic but no apps I'm using require this anymore since most android devices are keyboardless, this used to be fairly necessary when a lot of apps were developed on the G1. If you voice search with longpress of search on other devices a lot it could be an issue for you though.
- Plasticy feel/design of the back, it's nicer than it looks, feels solid despite being light and I'll be putting a resin case over it which disguises most of the horrible iphone 3G derived elements of the hardware anyway.
- Samsung customisation is actually quite nice once you've installed ADW launcher, I like the wifi/bt switches in the notification tray and the media player/in call controls that appear in there when those are active, it's a crying shame there's no widget for the media player though. Your tastes may differ but overall I think most of the customisations are good - with very noticeable exception of the homescreen.
* see here for an explanation, the default for EMPTY_APP and CONTENT_PROVIDER is some figure under 30MB, bump them up to 60 and 50 respectively and the phone runs brilliantly.
the greatest phone i've had to date, it's like a gameboy+office+email+movieplayer+mp3player+photoalbum+GPS+laptop+renote+terminal+web+wifi+bluetooth+phone, in 1 tiny little package
it sure beats my old HTC Athena in quality and speed, weight, durability, ease of use, amount of hacks and accessories for it
Had my UK spec galaxy for about a month. Not had any of the reported issues. Gps is great. Had 16 feet accuracy last night. Very little lag. Only when launching an app for the first time. Have zero regrets getting it. At least 3 other people have got one after seeing mine and they love it too. Highly recommended. Froyo will be amazing. But its the best out there even without it.

No, not very happy with it.
It's my first Android headset, I sold my 3GS to my sister figuring I'd finally give Android a chance. The homescreen is nice, notification system is brilliant and so on. But the system has a couple of major flaws...
It's just not as smooth, as easy to use or as elegant as iOS4. There's lag, the market is absolutely horrendous and Fring managed to break the camera so I had to uninstall that to get it back. I don't know what the eff Google are doing, but they need to bring the full marketplace to all countries. But even then, it's not very impressive. Yes I've rooted mine, yes I have market enabler, and it feels wrong. I should not have to do that just to get access to the rest of the market.
And this is, in my opinion, the biggest issue with Android today. I tried to find an app as good as AutoStitch or Pano for Android, but no, there is no such thing in the store. I tried to find a couple of high-quality games, I couldn't find any. I want Let's Golf 2, Worms and many others on this thing. I tried to find a photo editor comparable to PhotoForge and PhotoGene, or something similar to ColorSplash, and again, no. And what about synthesizers, virtual guitars and other fun apps? Haven't seen any.
This phone got me excited, but then I just realised... What's the point? All that power, but nothing is using it. All that power, and we still have lag all over the OS.
I'm sure people are going to hate me for this, but I am a bit disappointed by both the phone and the OS. I do have high hopes for Froyo, but flash support and a snappier OS probably won't be enough for me to keep it. I have bought over a hundred apps on my old 3GS, and I think I'd like those back now.
EDIT: If you think I'm wrong, if you have found the apps I'm looking for then by all means link me to them. I want to like this thing, I really do.
i like PhotoStitch, i keep a copy with me
Asphalt 5 is great, i consider that a quality game
Lets Golf 1 is also available
heck they even have my favourite Bejewled 1
they might not have version 2 of the software, but it will come soon.
Android is fairly new, it's only on version 2
there was not many apps nor games until Android 1.5 got matured.
Iphone OS is at least 2 version ahead of Android, give it some time for it to mature, and you'll see the big picture.

Oh yeah I have Let's Golf, bought that in Gameloft's own store. Very nice.
As for the rest, not a big fan of racing games I'm afraid.
And yeah I know it's a new platform, but they've been bragging about it's growth for a while now and yes I'm sure they have 100,000 apps in the store. I just can't find the good ones, the store needs an overhaul.
I'm afraid I just can't give it more time. I might have to return a year later or so.

Sounds like someone didn't do any research before a big purchase. If you liked how the iphone operated and all the apps for it, why did you switch?
Before I bought my SGS, i went on androlib to look for apps I would need on my phone. I didn't find everything I was looking for, but at least I knew what was there and what wasn't. I also looked around all the android forums (like android central) for any android-specific issues I might encounter.
I love Android. I simply do. I bought my first phone, a MyTouch 3G, almost as soon as it became available (no G1 for me since I don't like physical keyboard). Then I switched to Vibrant. In between, I used MyTouch 3G Slide for a little while.
Now don't take me wrong, all were (are) fine phones, but I think the Android OS is wrong somewhere in its cores. Who doesn't have sporadic problems with the WiFi connection and need to restart the phone every once in a while? Whose Android Market app never crashes or download apps always right away or always shows the right status for downloads? Ummm...what else? GPS, Gallery and lag issues on the Vibrant. The list goes on and on but you got the idea.
I am an iPhone hater but I own an iPod touch. I am abusing it every second and even my 2 yr old abuses it constantly. It rarely (and I mean RARELY) crashes, freezes, loses wifi connection, etc.
I am not changing my phone (yet), I am not switching from Android to WP7 or to iPhone 4 or whatever; however I am a little frustrated with this OS. I'd pay Google double to fix the general issues of Android and make a better, smoother and bug-free OS experience.
Just my 2 cents..
I have had none of these issues shy of the gps issues that JI6 fixed. Maybe you should return it and get a replacement.
I had a G1 and never had any of those issues. Even on the Vibrant (both of them), my issues were slight and didnt cause any problems. My Market has only crashed once and that was with CM6 on my G1. I rarely use GPS anymore, but when I do its spot on, usually locks in 5 seconds or less.
And the iOS is farely solid, I will say that (dont flame me, I hate apple as muxh as the next). But the amount of tweaking and personallizing that you can do is well worth the slight glitches.

To answer your title - no you cannot
As far as Android as an OS, it has its quirks and bugs, there is no perfect OS.
And the issues you highlighted are not Android specific per se, they are more relevant to Samsung implementation and tweaks they put on it.
Android OS is modified linux kernel and java framework to run under the dalvik-vm with JIT compilation, all the other stuff are additions by Samsung, HTC, etc.
I had a few lag issues and force closes. I hate the short battery life and widgets that use too much battery. But...after rooting and lag fixing my galaxy s, I'm finally happy. I also may be one of the few to brick a Nexus One. Hope that helps.

I have been trying to send an email from my phone since 8 AM this morning (it's 10:15AM right now).
Countless restarts, battery outs, router resets are not helping. Arrgh Moments like these are when I vent
Edit: clearing the Outbox and settings-->applications-->gmail-->clear cache and one last reboot solved the problem. Sigh
I think you're blaming Android, when it's probably more accurate to blame the device manufacturers. The Vibrant has some janky hardware (GPS, compass) and some lousy software (TW) that really detracts from the experience.
It seems like manufacturers can't help but screw up Android phones. The Nexus One IMO is the most successful Android device so far (in terms of quality, not sales), and it's as close to the "pure" Google experience as you can get out of the box.
Apple isn't always perfect either. I have an ipod touch that's about a year old and the browser will always stop loading images at some point if I'm surfing some sites with a lot of images.
I've also had the ios browser crash on me way more often than my android browser.
Not to say that Android is perfect. I had the lag issues and gps and all that but like someone said, that's more because Samsung's software sucks.
My G1 was pretty rock solid, it was just really slow.
There is one thing I love about iOS, it's the smoothness of the OS, because of the system wide hardware acceleration using the GPU, what Google need to do is add system wide hardware acceleration.

That's what I am hoping to see in the next releases of Android.
It is a de facto now that smartphones come with feature rich fast CPU's and some (like our beloved Vibrant) with more than capable GPU's. Come on Google bring us some UI acceleration, don't let the silicon sit idle.
I also have both an iPod Touch and a Vibrant. I think your issues are device specific. Aside from the GPS issue (which is 100% device specific) I haven't had any of the issues you described before or after flashing custom roms. You have to realize that IOS works so well because it's only on one type of phone. If anyone could drop IOS on any assembly of hardware then it would appear to be buggy as $#it too, especially when everybody and their mother decides to try to install their own custom stuff on top of it (TW, Sense, Moto Blur).
Android OS vs IOS is like PC gaming vs console gaming. On a console everything is going to work because developers don't have to worry about what the setup is going to be like, but you can't venture outside the sandbox, you're completely at the mercy of what the console manufacture deems fit to run on its device, and when the next console comes out it's the developer's choice whether they want to continue supporting the old device ie. some apps are crap on my first gent iPod Touch. With Android there are so many different hardware setups to program for that make it more difficult for one program to run uniformly across all different devices. If one manufacture puts together a sloppy piece of hardware, then it's going to run sloppy, or someone puts together a great piece of hardware but shoehorns their own custom software on top of it, things may not work as desired either. But with Android the possibilities are endless for molding it into what you want it to be. Look at how many of us flashed froyo roms to upgrade our phones ourselves. And when we did flash player and other 2.2 specific apps were waiting for us to download from the market, not hidden behind an iron wall.
For these reason's I'll be sticking with Android for good. Apple only says yes or no, but Android alway says "I'll let you try..."

you don't have to pay a dime for a smoother/bug-free os. That's what the development section is for. If you must have stability, flash a custom eclair rom (all of them are in their final versions now). (Or try a froyo rom if you want to experiment a little)
I'd personally recommend Bionix Final by TeamWhiskey. I've been using Bionix until Froyo was first ported, and the experience was 100x better than the Stock rom - in speed and stability (with or without a lagfix)
The phone did have a laggy firmware out of the box, but there are custom firmwares to fix the issues. It just requires a bit more work. So here's the bottom line: move away from Samsung stock firmware.

Dunno what was said... I did not read the full thread (pry should of be meh what ever)
Anywho, this is how I see it.
As you can see from my avatar I like macs (the heart is actually a band logo not meaning I heart macs.... although I completely do) I understand what you are saying about the OS sucking a lot and how iOS does not seem to suck as hard. Its the same thing with Windows computers vs Mac computers.
Windows is open for any company to mess around with... add programs and stuff to it and change it how they see fit for there company computers to sell, same is true for android. Example would be samsungs touchwiz.. Unlike iOS that is locked down to apple, they don't lend it out to any other company to put it on there phones... just like they do not let there computer OS out for other companys to put on there computers... that is what has helped them be so secure.

My Vibrant is my first smartphone, and it's not rooted. My main beef was the GPS, which got fixed by JI6...and that was Samsung's problem, not Android's. I have not had any other problems that weren't in the noise level. I'm actually been blown away with how many right things there are about Android. I have a freeze maybe once or twice a month, which gets fixed by a re-boot or even if I'm patient for a minute or so. I don't expect this gadget and its software to be perfect. Android seems to be a very forgiving OS. I really can't complain.
iOS is 4 years old.
Android about 2.
So with twice the development time, yeah it's going to be a bit more polished. That lead will diminish exponentially as both OSs mature.
iOS can be coded for one set of hardware, making it much easier to stabilize.
Having said that, as someone else already pointed out the pure Google phones ARE stable. My wife's G1 is rock solid, as is the Nexus One. If Samsung makes the next Nexus (Nexus S is a pretty firm rumor) it will be solid as well because Google insists the developer phones remain as close to stock, vanilla, Android as possible. Which means no proprietary file system or UI.

I've been reading for quite awhile because I got myself one (it's still on the way to me, so no hands on yet). I got it mainly because it's a Nexus and I'm done with those 3rd modifications on top of vanilla.
However, I'm getting really mixed comments from all of you guys. Some said it's really nice, some said it's the worst tablet. Although things are always going back to people's own preference but from what I read, 4.2.2 did give lotsa headaches to users mainly because of leaked memory and so.
So users, can you give me your truthful comments from both pros and cons? I can only get the device by next week and after that, it will be my time to list out my very own pros and cons.
Thanks and cheers!

Yeah, you better cancel your order because some random a holes on the internet did not like something.
Well, the problem is, I can't. Plus, I'm still quite skeptical about the reboots and I have faith that it will be fixed with the update soon.
Are you one of the users?
I'm definitely ok with a bit of problems and it gives me perfect reason to root and tweak it on myself although some do claim that, it should work perfectly fine out of the box.

I'm running stock and can definitely say that the surfaceflinger memory exists. It becomes obvious when you play multiple videos (streaming or video files). When you do other activities this bug is not readily apparent.
I also from time to time get random WiFi disconnects, which are easily fixed by toggling the WiFi off/on. With that being said I really like my N10 and am using it for more than I expected when I bought it. The display resolution, I/O speed and CPU are all outstanding.
At least the memory leak can be fixed and I read that the surfaceflinger driver developer already has it ready. This gives me hope that Android 4.3 will include the fix. The N10 used as a media consumption device is very good/excellent. I am not disappointed with my purchase.
My laptop at the about same price point (after including N10 accessories) has not been turned on in over three months. All my news reading has move from my desktop PC to the N10. I was surprised at how smooth that transition went.
The only thing that really bothered me about the Nexus 10 is how it could throttle and lower CPU clocks under general usage (general being like playing a game). But then again, the Nexus 4 also does this...
Aside from that though, I find the N10 pretty awesome
The light bleed at the bottom right is the only thing that has bothered me much, but that's because the threads here pointed it out and turned on an OCD switch in me. After almost a month, I had my first two reboots last night, both while watching an hourlong streaming video from a TV network site (using Firefox with Flash). Other than that, couldn't be happier with my N10.

Here's the thing that I always talk about. It's a nexus and all problems will be solved for sure by Google itself. With such a good display as well as the A15 architecture proc, it's really a beast and let alone the pure vanilla android.
People are a little bit over exaggerated about the bug, IMO. We receive the newest version and bugs are bearable with me. At least buyers should be aware of the firmware is always the latest which might be a little big buggy. Few positive comments over here are really making my day.
Another thing that bothered me is available RAM. Google states the tablet has 2GB of RAM, which is true (there is 2GB worth of RAM chips installed on the motherboard technically). Before 4.2.2, about 400MB was reserved specifically for the GPU, which is the largest amount of RAM I've seen on any Android device, so that left 1.6GB usable. Not that bad, and it still rounded to 2GB (most other devices though to be fair take like 200-300MB; but the N10 is driving a pretty beefy resolution)
WIth 4.2.2, the RAM reserved for the GPU doubled to 800-some MB (836?). So now the total RAM that the user can use on their own is 1.2GB. No longer nearly close to 2GB.
I guess nothing can really be done about it now, but I don't understand why there just isn't dedicated memory just for the GPU, or why Google doesn't just advertise how much RAM is actually available to use. This isn't an issue at all on most other devices, since the missing memory is usually a small amount, but when almost half of the advertised RAM is missing and not even user-configurable (most computers with IGPs sharing system memory at least let you specify how much you want to dedicated to it)... I find that pretty shady :/
On the other hand, I don't have any out-of-memory problems though (aside from the surfaceflinger thing), so it doesn't seem to be an "actual" issue.
I haven't really noticed anything wrong with my nexus 10 I think its great and fast. Also 4.3 is going to be released soon which should fix any software related issues and make it even smoother . I don't use my tablet as much as others might so maybe that's why I don't notice anything wrong. I generally use it 2-3 hours a day and the only thing I hat is the charging time which feels like forever and that it has a phablet ui rather than tablet look which wastes a little screen space. What they should do is get rid of notification bar and combine it with Nav bar like other tablets

Use full!screen and LMT/PIE and get all the screen resolution back (full 2560x1600). full!screen gets rid of both bars and provides a notifications pop-up while LMT/PIE can be configured with all the navigation buttons plus much more. I've been using that combination on rooted stock for months now and would never go back to the waste of space that either bar takes.
I like the clean AOSP browser in fullscreen mode plus thumb controls but it does not always paint properly when used with full!screen (artifacts where the navigation bar used to be). I switched to Ocean browser which is really AOSP with a new UI and that fixed the fullscreen paint issue.

If you can deal with random reboots don't worry about it. It really is something that depends on use. Watching YouTube via chrome will exacerbate the reboots. The actual app doesn't seem to eat the memory. However for my use I can't have it rebooting in the middle of a meeting or trying to dial into work so it has become something of a paperweight. I know how to consume the memory and how to avoid it but it will still eventually reboot. If your using it for goof off purposes instead of productivity you'll be fine. Also, please don't be an Android/Google apologist. They've had 6 months to fix the issue. And they don't market it as a device with buggy firmware that will reboot. If they called it Nexus 10 developer edition I'd agree with you.

Pros:
- Highest resolution tablet on the market, nobody else comes close, even latest iPad has 25% less pixels. I had a Thunderbolt display at work last year and loved working with so much screen real-estate, well, this tablet has even more pixels in 10" than that display had in 27".
- First Android device with beefy Cortex A15 CPU, the Exynos 5 Dual, still the only tablet on the market with A15.
- I actually like the build, fairly thin and I like the sticky material on back.
- For $500 for 32 GB, the one I got, you won't find any device with such high-end specs.
- Android 4.2.2 is usually fairly snappy, sometimes I go back and forth between the home screen and the application drawer just to see the snazzy zoom-in/zoom-out animation and how fast it is.
Each one of these comes with drawbacks however.
Cons:
- You want a high resolution, you have to pay for it with power draw. The display consistently accounts for about 60% of battery usage, even though I keep the brightness at about 30% under light and dial it down to the lowest setting in a dark room. The colors are good but a bit washed out, particularly when compared to an iPad. I wish it had a matte display like my Zenbook, as the glossy display does catch reflections, but I'm not sure that's possible for a tablet.
- The Exynos 5 CPU takes more power than it should and runs somewhat hot. Not as hot as the Tegra 3 in my HOX+, but fairly warm.
- I was surprised how heavy 1.3 lbs felt from the first time I held it. The battery in this thing is huge, 9Ah, compared to 2-3 Ah in most current flagship phones, like the One or S4. It probably had to be so big with that power-sucking display and CPU, but it adds weight.
- The build is a bit creaky and sometimes feels like you have to snap particular pieces back into place, probably to be expected at this cheap price.
- Android still has times when it starts lagging and everything you do takes a second or two to register. These slowdowns often come out of the blue and you're never sure what's going on. This is a mobile OS, so prepare to be frustrated when apps are backgrounded and cached data is lost, particularly if you're expecting something closer to desktop performance because of the specs. The known memory leak in 4.2.2 exacerbates this problem.
I'm happy with my Nexus 10, as I enjoy the high resolution and don't use it anywhere as much as my ultrabook. Now that I know about the memory leak, I may start trying to use it for web reading again, which I had to give up on because it was unusable when Chrome would start reloading every page for no reason. Now I know to reboot when that starts happening, so I at least have a workaround till they fix it.
I love the tablet, for the way I use it - which may be considered light use by most here - it is perfect. The memory issue is real there is no doubt about that. But it is also easily avoided. I reboot my N10 with a tasker profile once during the night and that is that. However I game on it very rarely and use it mostly for streaming movies or just browing the web. One reboot each night seems to be enough to not make these issues appear.
Having said that I have none of the other reported issues, no random reboots or whacky Wifi - I turn Wifi off when the tablet is not in use - but I am also running SentinelRom which seems to be ironing out a lot of the smaller issues. With this ROM scrolling for example has become a silky smooth affair.
Battery life is excellent, much better than the boards make it out to be. I rarely use the N10 with brightness above 25% because it is already so bright on that setting there is no need for it. There may be light bleed - hey it's an LCD after all! - but I never notice any the way I use it. The display is gorgeous in every way, shape and form and I really really like the fact that putting it on lowest brightness makes it really dark. This is perfect for using it in bed at night without getting eye cancer.
With the POGO charger the tablet even has decent charging speed.
Regarding build quality I cannot complain at all. My tablet is not creaky in the least. I had a TF101 which was way worse. I mostly use it with a Poetic smart cover and couldn't be happier. The weight is of course noticeable, but then again this is 10 inches of hardware, it will never feel light as a feather.
Still there are some undeniable software issues still present. The memory leak being one, some issues with scrolling (except when using SentinelRom) being another. But I have yet to see the "perfect" android device which so far does not exist. Google still has a lot of work to do.

Not getting the random reboots you speak of. Use my tablet 3-4 hours per day, sometimes more, and do not recall having 1 reboot. AOSP browser closures, yes, though with newer versions not as much. Have 2 Nexus 10 tablets, one stock, one sw display itching between SaberMod and Buttered AOKP.
Had both theTF101 and TF700. Went with the ASUS because of it's IPS+ display and SD card slot. 5 weeks after receiving, had to send it in for charging issues..oneof my main problems with the TF101. For the slight amount of money more for the Nexus 10, it is a much better option. Check out Swappa.com-can typically get a slightly used Nexus 10 for a really good price

I also left out the statement that got me to post originally: "However for my use I can't have it rebooting in the middle of a meeting or trying to dial into work so it mass become something of a paperweight." As the OP was curious about the reliability of this tablet, I wanted to offer a different perspective.
As a tablet for business, I use it for surfing (quote obtained from website, along with any needed client info), note taking, power point and excel, E-mail, along with a few other things. In a given day, I may spend 3-4 hours, while in client homes, using my tablet. So yes, we may use these differently, but for any "business" function I have thrown at it, it works fine. I also do not do many video presentations, which may explain why I do not experience the same issues as you.
