Do any of you happen to know if it's possible to change the sensitivity of the trackball? I've noticed on HTC devices it slowly moves one character at a time, which is quite tedious during those few times I need it. It generally feels kinda "loose" with the OS.
My G1's trackball is weird. Sometimes it is hyper-senstive, and othertimes, it barely moves anything. Sorry, I haven't seen anything that lets you play with sensitivity levels.

My trackball speed is very inconsistent, as well. In text, it's ridiculously slow -- a full stroke only moves it a couple or three characters. In the browser, moving from link to link, it's almost unusably fiddly and sensitive; it can be a real chore to get the highlight onto the correct link without it shooting off someplace far away. I hope this gets addressed in an update soon.

Folks.. Not sure if I made a mistake here.. I whinged to T-mobile about how my Vario IV's lack of reception was driving me over the edge and somehow convinced them (mid-contract) that I just HAD to have a G2 or i'd die!! Well not quite but anyway they felt sorry for me and as of yesterday I am in possession of my first android phone.
1) Looks and feels great. matt/rubberized casing a joy to hold and the Bruse Forsyth chin seems to make sense somehow.
2) Display is crisp and clear and touch screen is very responsive although the idea that I can't use a stylus effectively bugs me a little especially when yr fat thumb can't quite place that pin acurately on google maps!!
3) When you get reception and make a call it is pretty clear and loud enough
4) Music playback.. Plays well. Again fairly clear and loud enough to drown out even the loudest tube journey effectively.
5a) Camera stills. Not alot of love here.. Don't get me wrong the pictures look ok but not a vast improvement over the g1 3.2 or any pther mobile phone 3.2 cam. To be honest, being able to take shots exclusively by pressing the thumb wheel was a mistake.. I found myself zooming in or out alot just as I was about to take an exposure.. Frustrating!
5b) Camera/video capture. CRAP!!!! seriously HTC why are we still toying with 352 x 288?? Can someone please tell me???
6) Keyboard.. One of the better touchscreen keyboards out there and with feedback is always a plus, problem is I am a dedicated/Qwerty/ h/w keyboard fan and this just is not doing it for me at all.. The keys though responsive are not accurate at all and you will find a whole bunch of errors when you look back at your text even after the intuitive suggestive text has it's way. the other thing I found was that I started experiencing cramp in my thumbs even after a very short period of typing on this thing due to the awkward position I had to place my thumb in to effectively hit the "backspace key".
7) Lag..It's there folks and it's real!! It doesn't seem to take much to get it going too.. I only had a google maps sess and the cam running in the background.. Hopefully HTC can sort this in some form of a s/w update..
by the way I can't seem to dial 150 to get to t-mobile services.. just says the number isn't valid.. Anyone else having this prob??
There is more and i'll hit you with it when I remember but that's it for my T-mobile specific rants on the G2.

I was so looking forward to this device after my Kaiser/XperiaX1/Rhodium. My biggest gripe was always the speed, then the screen size, after all.
But this thing is next to useless. The capacitive touch screen is HORRIBLE, and the lack of a stylus so annoying that words cannot describe. I find that I constantly end up with apps closing when I try to press buttons near the top, etc.
Its impossible to type with, its so inaccurate. Maybe its unfair of me, coming from devices with keyboards but even so, I could type on the screen of my rhodium soo much better.
I guess that boils down to "capacitive screen" too, I guess I'll be going back to my Rhodium and waiting for a snapdragon or tegra powered system with a resistive screen.... Calibrating this thing makes no useful difference.
Sorry for the rant, more than a little frustrated with my £500 paperweight atm.

All I can think is you must have really FAT fingers becuase the screen on this baby is amazing and typing on it is amazing. It's a million times better than the iPhone.
I haven't ever used an iphone for more than a few mins.
I don't think the issue is finger size as I can type better on the screen of my rhodium which is smaller, but resistive. Its more the fact that I touch a button and something happens over the other side of the screen (maybe a slight exaggeration) and apps like Resco file explorer leave me trying to press the same button 20 times before I get it due to lack of Stylus.
Its not usable, its just frustrating.

I really disagree with you on this. I think the screen and the responsiveness is superb to type on. Top of marked for sure. Beats iPhone and Hero imo.
The touch screen on HD2 just like a sexy girl - soooo sensitive.
beating the iPhone and Hero doesn't mean much to me as I haven't done much with either beyond a quick fiddle, but we are all held to believe that capacitive is better, so I was expecting an improvement on my old phones which have all been Resistive.
Maybe mine is broken I guess...
Still, I eventually managed to make a link to the task manager on the start menu. It feels like I fight with it for 30 mins and if I am lucky, I happen to get something done along the way.
If only it was like just about every other HTC phone I have used and had the little drop down task manager on the home screen where the X would usually be...
Its all down to
Calibration.
Ensure you calibrate the screen and calibrate the screen how you tend to use it.
I calibrated the screen with my thumb while holding it in the same hand. Scary but for its size and sensitivity it works great.
Be careful about calibrating with your finger then expect to type great with your thumb. Works okay but you will need some patience. You will get better results with calibrating with your thumb in my situation.
^Agree, re-calibrate your screen & see the differents. If you still want to sell, then put it in the Marketplace...

There's a tweak for that already [that puts it back there] - think it's a Dutty job - have a look in the other forum on apps
And BTW - I've owned an iPhone and many HTC touhscreens and I feel your pain - I too have issues with this one typing is pretty inaccurate (typically it seems to trigger the key blelow that which I'm typing on) and sometimes it seems to just not recognise a press at all....I end up jabbing it so hard with my finger sometimes in frustration! I'm becoming more used to it but it is a little dissapointing, given the iPhones screen (for accuracy and responsiveness) is certainly thus far better than this one
Guys, remember, this screen is going to take time to get used to. Capacitive is a totally different beast to resistive.
And one day is not long enough to fully get used to a device. I am having a few small problems with typing (mostly because it's so sensitive and I'm not used to it!).
Once I get used to it, I don't think there will be any problems. I can already type faster on the HD2 on screen keyboard than I could on the X1 hardware keyboard!

Original Poster's phone could be faulty. I had a demo of an HD2 the other day, and the keyboard was going completely mad: touching the backspace key, for example, resulted in a flurry of detected key-presses not just of the backspace key itself but of all keys around it in all directions. I mentioned this to the guy in the shop and he said that the reason why they had put that one aside for demo purposes was precisely that they couldn't get the screen properly aligned/calibrated on it, and that the other models they had didn't have the same problem. He might have been lying, of course....
Is anyone else having issues with the back & search keys at the bottom being unresponsive? We have 2x epics and both appear to have this issue.
back button working good here. havent used the search button more than 3 times since i got the phone.
This appears to be a fairly common issue. A lot of people are saying they have issues with different buttons. My home button is the least responsive.
I have to mash the "button" area considerably to get a response - perhaps it waits for a certain amount of capacitive load/change before activating. That would help reduce unwanted taps when swiping across the screen - the Evo was wonderfully sensitive, but an overzealous scroll often had the unintentional side-effect of bringing you back home or backing you out. Also, the Evo, for me, constantly brought up the search dialog if the edge of my hand came too close. So, I suppose it's a tradeoff.

This isn't true. My Epic capacitive buttons respond to a very light tap and also a full on *press*.
sounds like non-functioning buttons to me.
You might have a bad sensor on your buttons.
I did have to get used to them. The Evo's were very sensitive, in fact in landscape I'd often accidentally brush one and it was a little annoying.
The epic does seem to need just a half second or so longer for the tap to be recognized.

thats more annoying. It makes the phone feel laggy, atleast to me it does. All the my buttons require 2-5 touches before they register

I'm not getting that at all. You might want to bring it back and swap it. It takes slightly longer than the evo to register but it feels "about right" to me. When I want to hit it, I have no problem hitting it.
I went to the Sprint store yesterday. The guy told me the early phones had this issue. I asked to try out the one he was giving me. He said, he'll be back and need to take it to the tech for setup and "an update"?...huh, already?
Anyways, he came back and I tried out ALL the buttons. A VERY lite tap and it responds...all of them...
I had a poll going before, and it looked like the issue was relatively wide spread... Apparently though, some phones do not have this problem. If you get this, swap out your phone, it is likely defective.

I think part of the issue is that the buttons' sensitivity region is slightly below the button icons. If you tap above the buttons, they dont respond. Tap slightly below them, however, and they should respond every time... Unfortunately, this makes most cases for the epic 4g pretty terrible since you cant really press below the menu and search keys... Of course I could be wrong.
Some one else must surely experience the same thing, but its really doing my head in, and makes smooth scrolling in web pages nigh on impossible to achieve.
Basically, I find if I scroll slowly with my finger, much of the time it'll follow my finger just fine, but the second time as soon as I lift my finger off the screen, it will just take off and scroll much further than I wanted to... Sometimes it will even take off in the opposite direction!
Its starting to drive me mad, anyone knows why it does this? I've even tried different browsers but it does the same in many of those too. Any ideas?

Actually the S2 touchscreen seems to be pretty good. The only issue I've found is this: There appears to be a 'move threshold'. I.e. when you touch the screen, the touch-down even is sent fine, but when you move your finger slightly no move event happens. You have to move at least.. maybe 2 mm, before any move events happen, at which point the touch jumps from its original position to the correct one. This has the effect of making all scrolls and pans start with a little jump.
Even the crappy touchscreen on my N1 doesn't do this. To me it sounds like a software issue -- maybe even deliberate -- rather than hardware. Does anyone know why they would do this, or how to fix it?
You should make a youtube video showing this issue.
Multitouch Visualizer shows this issue clearly (as well as, on a positive note, showing the screen can identify and track at least 10 touch points simultaneously -- nice!)
Yup, looks like software big. hope its fixed in next update. Try playing pool break game, the direction change due to this bug is annoying.

I think it's a future, not a bug: Not scrolling when you lift your finger off the screen, because you can't lift it perfectly vertically. It happens some time on my DHD.
I've noticed this in every android phone even my nexus one. It must be the way android is written, doesn't seem like there's much you can do about it =(
Also all android phones seem to lag with the touch input. The time between the actual movement of your finger and the screen moving is much greater than ios or wp7 devices. Its like the content is following your finger around lagged while on ios or wp7 its always directly under your finger.
The N1 does it in some places but not all. The most obvious place it doesn't do it in is the (stock) lock screen. It also doesn't do it when you slide the notification bar up from the bottom (but does when you slide it down from the top!)
The SGS2 seems to do it absolutely everywhere. I also think that the 'step' is bigger on the SGS2, although that might just be due to the screen being larger. It's quite possible that when someone creates an AOSP ROM for the SGS2 it'll go back to doing it in the same places as the N1.
