hey,
I'm currently using lg eve and i'm really interested by htc sense UI and I was wondering is it worth buying since the processor is only 528 MHz plus is the multi touch on the hero similar to the iphone?
-someone might have asked this same question i couldn't find it-(lazy)
lol, i wouldnt have the nexus one ( 1 Ghz) if i could. I love the hero so much, its perfect haha. well, with an update coming in mid february, it will hopefully be perfect;p
id say go for it
and it has capacitive touch screen, so its basically the same sensitivity as the ipodtouch/iphone.
and in browser, 2 finger pinch to zoom, is "almost" as smooth as in the iphone...
if your deciding between iphone/hero... go with the hero, multitasking pwns
No you should get the HTC Legend which is the 2nd gen hero
You can find it here

Absolutely!
Paid fourhundred euros for my first one which I lost The next day I bought another one for 350.

The sense UI doesn't work for me. I don't need 7 homescreens and it slows my phone down. Pleeaase don't compare it to the iPawn. they're two completely different things. but I should tell you that multitouch is enabled by HTC it soesn't work natively in android 1.5, it only works in the browser and in albums
edit: but after the update to 2.0 it will support multitouch!
in my opinion, no its not worth the money i paid, however i have bought one, and will keep it for a while.
you'd be far better off getting a G1 and flashing it to the latest 2.1 rom.

The G1 is indeed a very nice device my father owns one, I find it a little bit too big, but the sliding keyboard is very, very nice!!
I bought mine, I have to say this phone is awesome! You won't regret it after purchasing it.
finaly decided
well, guys I'm getting the hero tomorrow and thanks for the replies, it really made a difference
I love my hero too... it the best phone i ever had!!
side question to all...
I have loveD each of my phone, when i got it.
Every time we get a new phone, it is an upgrade.
so each time.. it would be for a better phone.
so.. would we not love each new phone.. THE BEST!
lol

well, guys i finaly got my hero today and i can't stop playing with it, it's has more potential than my eve.

Nice one!!
So what do you think about Sense?
before i used to think htc sense made windows mobile more friendly, but after seeing htc sense on android it was mind blowing, its like best of both worlds

Hi:
I actually own a HTC HD (for 6 months) and I really like playing with it, flashing it (Dutty Holy Grail R0 ROM) etc. Though I´m not 100% happy mainly becuase of speed issues and lagginess.
Now I have the chance to get my hands on a Hero, chin version.
As you may know, another expensive smartphone aside the HD.
So Hero owners...which is your opinion? Should I take the chance or let it go?
I also own an 2g Iphone. So I have already use Iphone OS and WinMo...only missing Android and of what I´ve seen I like it a lot.
Thanks for any suggestions.
I've been a WM user with the HTC HERMES for the past few years.
I've had my HERO for the past two weeks now and I absolutely love it.
HTC HD looked really attractive to me before i got the hero .. but I decided to switch to the great ANDROID OS and I don't regret it.
I had the HD and a currently on the Hero and I love it
I prefer the Hero.
I dont even miss the large screen
Android is just so much fun working on and you will find that it actually runs pretty cool right out of the box... something the HD only does when you have tweaked it.
Hope you figure out what to do.
I absolutely love my Hero! It's night and day compared to ANY custom built WM ROM, and I've been flashing several times a day for a couple of years!
Android just works - Sence is great - being a flashaholic, I don't even feel the need to root the phone... mindblowing. I think my gf loves it even more 'cause now I have more time for her
Mind you it's not perfect and there are concerns about HTC updates. Developers are few. So keep that in mind as I've found out about this only after I got it..

oh yeah, welcome to the club!
My hero is broken and i cannot make up my mind about what to do.
should i get a new hero or switch to a desire?
I started to read in the desire forum and clearly they are having problems with this usb brick.
It also seems like the custom rom development for desire barely exists.
Im really happy with my hero running very smooth, even smoother than my friends desire in some gui animations but the snapdragon does its thing when it comes to calculation..
add to the calculation that i can get a hero for roughly half the price.
help me out here!
Hmmmm,.... Well I dont think the Desire is worth twice the amount of a Hero,... But if it had a hardware keyboard I'd be tempted.
If I was you,... I'd get the cheapest thing available, i'd even consider a Magic,... Then wait for the Vision,... But again, thats cos I really want a keyboard, and it could be 6 months or more for that to drop.
If you wont be upgrading again for a while i'd get a Desire, and custom ROMs will get better.
Hmmmmm,.... Its a hard one.... Sorry, no help whatsoever.
have you considered a legend? u will still get the nice htc styling (infact in my opinion the legend is best looking android phone) but also 2.1 android as default - htc will no doult upgrade legend to 2.2 (even if it takes 6months)
the legend is alot faster then the hero (not as fast of the desire mind but still)
it seems a good middle ground choice for you!
the legend is ok i guess, but its almost as expencive as the desire, and then id rather go for snapdragon and oled
a friend of mine has the legend and i dont really like the color reproduction..
and with my current rom to the hero its less sluggish than desire so i doubt legend could beat that. but on the other hand i dont know anything about legen custom development..
I just bought a Desire and am selling me Hero to finance it, well i'm going to use my Desire for a week and see if i like it or if i miss my Hero, as you said the dev scene on the Desire (right now) isn't a patch on the Hero!
I am also concerned about the number of Desire's that are being bricked whilst being rooted and as such won't be rooting mine until they find out why it's happening, tis a bit expensive to turn into a paper weight and if i can't root might stay with Hero because i love ROM flashing . I do realise that they may never find out why though
the usb brick is my biggest concern..
the custom dev will appear i guess in time but im also worried about HTC, how long will they delay froyo for example?
we all have bad experience from HTC with the 2.1 update for hero..
i could buy a cheap hero now and buy the next flagship from HTC ( WITHOUT HARDWARE KEYBOARD )
If you want to save money the buy another hero.
Otherwise not another htc phone.

Perhaps ask dev's like Paul @ Modaco, Nathan @ VillainRom about their thoughts on the bricking subject? (I'm sure they both have Desire's + Behnaam is getting one too)

And the Desire with hardware keyboard looks [email protected]$$

Huh? HOW? Where?... I initially paid £230 for my Hero 4-5 months ago, fortunately it had 2 TINY chips on (less than 1mm each), so got £30 back again.
Milestone...
+1 other
nexus one.
SO.. as the title says... is the Hero worth buying now?
Also, I`ve read here about some problems with the touch screen that suddenly appear... is that a general issue or just some isolated incidents?
The phone is over a year old now, the CPU is a generation older than the other Android devices with the 1GHz Snapdragon processor. I'm sure the phone manufacturers are preparing the next generation devices for later in the year - making those phones obsolete.
If you're after a cheap device then you should be able to get a Hero second hand for a decent price. If you're willing to root and try new ROMs then there is still a decent community for the Hero - otherwise you'll be stuck on Android 2.1 if you stick with the official updates. The Hero is highly unlikely to get any more updates from HTC.
If your budget allows for a newer phone, then you'd be better off getting a more powerful Android device.
Thanks, I too think that it`s a little old, but it has a fairly good price, almost the same as Wildfire here, where I live, but that qvga screen on the Wildfire is a let down for me.
Alex~ is bang on, it is cheap, and the community on here is great, so if your gona be using custom roms then go for it. But I wouldn't like to say how many devs will still bother with us after Xmas.
If you can put up ur budget, do that.

Tru, there are better phones available if buying new, but it's more than competent if second hand.
I'll be about till May 2011 with my hero anyway, as my contract expires then. And even then, the hero is popular enough to merit continued support i reckin.
Hi I just bought one off eBay about a month old for £150 took a bit time to root and get used to Android, but worth it and its ok for price with lots of features. Although I think I now should have gone for HTC Legend?

Not to mention that there is no other Android phone with as cool appearance as that of a black Hero (the european version, not the US Sprint's ugly cousin). I held the Desire in my hands and played with it a bit, but although it was blazingly fast, it didn't strike me as something I'd want.
What I will want next year is a Hero-shaped phone with modern hardware.
Would not recommend ebay.
Three are selling reconditioned £159.99 with £10 credit and can be unlocked from ebay for £6.50. Also £12 cashback if you go through Quidco.
Hope this helps.
Well the community for it is quite huge. Ofc it will slim when others move to newer phones, but I guess there are folks who got a 2 year contract (me being one of them, hehe )

I agree completely, imo the only other phone that looks as good or better than the Hero is the Legend. A Hero-shaped super phone would be amazing

they've released the htc wildfire which is very much just a repackaged hero... i have no idea why they did it. it lacks all the style and class of the hero and only has an fm radio to make up for it.
Well if you root your Hero and overclock it, it pretty much becomes a Legend. Without the better screen and slimer profile. I want the Desire but got the HTC Hero this year because it just looked awesome (unfortunately Canadian carriers screw you over with 3 year contracts instead of two ) but I do love my Hero as it is my first smart phone and I love the 'chin'.
It is a matter of preference so the choice in the end is yours, but we do have Feeyo .
The design really stands out yea. People are always like "hey, what kind of phone is that?" while my brother gets none and has a desire
I think there are too many phones who are desire-like look at first look. Hero really stands out

I get that a bit. Although the only smartphone that really has any recognition here in NZ is the iPhone. I imported my phone as we don't even have a decent range of Android phones (at reasonable prices). I mean... we JUST got the Nexus One which Google just stopped selling? lol.
But I only recently got my hero (a month ago now?) and i'm happy with my purchase. I mean... there's other purchases that could be had. I almost got a Milestone but the keyboard really put me off (played with my mates', it was a terrible keyboard.. the buttons are so stiff it isn't funny). I mean... I noticed a price drop of the Milestone shortly after I purchased my Hero but.. Eh, I can't complain. Bigger screen/higher res would've been nice though. Specs aren't really much more to write home about though.
Hero was reasonably priced, looks good, performs well enough. My only real annoyances about it are: No official Froyo, smaller screen/lower-resolution than others, can't run some newer games which i probably wouldn't play much anyway.
I'll probably upgrade next year when I have lots of money
Hi guys,
I've been really itching to get a second phone with a good qwerty keypad and I am really considering a G1. I just tried one out and and the screen resolution and sensitivity is kinda disappointing but I still want one lol
Can anyone tell me whats it like to use the G1 as a daily driver? Is it painfully slow? What about mobile browsing compared to the n1? or the hero? how slow is the g1?
I've used the Hero before and mobile browsing experience was painfully slow. There were times wherein everything really slowed down and I had to reboot everything just to get things done.
Also, whats the best and fastest 2.1 sense rom for daily use? 1.5 sense? Are the froyo roms running well on the G1 or are they really just for novelty?
Thanks!
It's a decent phone, esp. If you get it rooted with the 2.1 Mod. But, it's starting to show it's age after 2 years, and many apps/programs on the phone will slow it down a bit.
Plus, the camera, while it takes good pictures, is lacking. No real Video (w/o the mod), no Flash and no Zoom (but you can do it after you take the pic, WTF).
But as one of the few GSM physical keyboard Smartphones, It's ok, but like I've said, it's age is starting to show, so in like a year you will probably wanna get another phone.

Please, No!..
Youll regret buying such a relic, youre better off buying a G2 when its released later this year...The G1 is the ancestor to all the other phones, you should NOT buy the G1, it struggles to handle 1.6+ w/o....But with a newer phone you can enjoy all features without giving up performance, i just got a slide and its the bomb...But im giving her up to save for the g2 instead...YOU WILL be disappoint...That's a promise.
LOL, thanks for the input guys!
Almost made the mistake of buying, I was kind of expecting performance similar to the Hero or Magic but I guess not. I also tried the touchpro2 and it is a total piece of crap ) Resistive screens does the phone no justice and the OS is just clunky.
Why are there still devs working on the G1 if it can't even handle 1.6 properly? For novelty?

Oh it can handle 1.6 just fine. but 2.1 sucked noodles for so long. Right now Froyo is not bad at all on the G1 though, i use HTC Clay's build off cyanogen and it works perfectly fine for me, it's been like 3 days since i first installed the rom and it's good. It is awesome for how long it's put out, but i bet every g1 owner including myself is just itching to buy their next smartphone asap!
you should wait for the G2, i think everyones gonna jump ship there, im personally waiting to see what the hell is project emerald.

If you try a stock rom then use one of the 2.1+ roms, the stock is much faster...I personally tried this experiment, my stock, nonrooted G1 was much faster than the one clocked all the way to 576...Thats a damn shame. Overclocking is supposed to help speed things by a lot. Dont get me wrong i appreciate their hard work, but the hardware just cant handle the OS correctly.
Whoa, I have the same question! I was looking at buying a G1, since I have simple needs and I enjoy annoying people who technolust over the newer phones.
But if it struggles during those simple needs (ordinary phone stuff and youtube quality video) then I guess I'll wait.

I dont use mobile youtube, but it can do stuff like call, text, web just fine...The froyo browser seems kind of jerky on the G1 for me. your better off getting a Galaxy S/Vibrant/Fas/Epic or the G2.
I have a plain vanilla g1. I have used text messaging a lot, make very few calls (just not that into talking on the phone) internet browsing mostly, google navigation, picture taking, reading e-books, etc. I would say it is an ok phone for those things, however, that said, I am definitely looking to see what comes out this fall. I have been reading about a lot of the cool things android can do past the 2.0 barrier and want to upgrade for those reasons. If you are considering the g1 and do not mind that the community has gone beyond the hardware, and are not all that interested in apps, it is a good solid workhorse. If you are app envious, wait. Just tossing in my .02 from someone who does not root and rom. Hope this helps your decision.
The only reason I can stand using the G1 is because I have an iPhone 3GS as my main phone. My G1 is just to mess around with Android. Works great for that.
Don't get the G1 if you want a new phone though. Wait for the G2. It looks awesome.
I agree. Don't get a G1. It is definitely showing its age.

I can guarantee that rooting your phone and loading a froyo rom will undoubtedly fix the bluetooth problem. I had the 2.1 official update until a few days back and then rooted and loaded the FroydVillain 1.6 rom. Previously I could pair with my Nokia BH-504 headphones, but when using them on a call they would hang due to a software incompatibility of the official ROM with the BT stack of the headphones.
Now they work perfectly. So will your car BT. I cannot be 100% sure, but I'm pretty confident on a 95%.
Your other problems with the phone are lag related. On Froyo the phone flies. No more lag, the Froydvillain rom has a overclock/underclock utility to ensure maximum performance with even better battery life. Trust me. Use it.
And if you have the 2.1 update then there is an almost 1-click root method on the villainrom.co.uk forum.
I wanted to get the Desire HD but because of the stock issues with carriers, just went to o2 and got my self a Htc HD 7 and just loving it

guys the 4:3 inch screen phones are goody, dont even feel like using my comp any more.
I'm due to upgrade my GSM Hero on January 4th. I'll definitely miss it but I always like to get a new handset come upgrade time.
I'm currently torn between the Desire HD and Galaxy S, however both of them have issues that bother me. The main ones being:
Desire HD - Battery life is reported to be very poor. Speaker quality not great. Possibly a bit too big also. LCD screen not as good as Samsung AMOLED.
Galaxy S - No Sense UI. Suffers lag out the box (fixed with custom ROMs and tweaks). Also quite a platsicy phone compared to the HTCs I'm used to. Looks like an iPhone 3GS. Also, it doesn't bode well for Samsung when XDA members can fix things they themselves can't!
I'm almost tempted to wait it our for the new series of dual-core Android handsets like the LG Star / new Moto phone but I'm not sure if / when they will be released in the UK. The Galaxy S II and Nexus 2 are tempting too but again, it's a case of if / when they are released in the UK.
One thing is for sure though, I'll definitely be sticking with Android.

Hi Guys,
After lots of fun with my Hero and the great ROMs that are around here made it more fun.
Today I became the proud owner of the Desire HD how great is this huge screen, and the speed. It makes the Hero look so obsolete!
Still this was my best phone ever! Androided and rooted for life thanks to my Hero.
Ofcourse going to root my Desire HD!
It seems as though the Desire HD is the upgrade of choice from the Hero.
Hopefully us Canadians will get a version that will support our 3G bands soon
