Hello fellas and ladies!
My brother got an iPhone a few weeks ago and of course I have been testing it and comparing it to my first love (universal), which is still up for sale if anyone is interested !!!
I would like to mention the following (based on my comparison with my Uni) and ask you a question!
Pros:
3G/wifi internet is faster on the iPhone
- On Uni I have tried with Opera 9.5 and IE
Games are so much more advanced and flawless especially with the accelerometer!
Battery with heavy use on the iPhone lasts a little over a day! The Uni lasts much less with heavy use!! The battery on the Uni is terrible...
Cons:
No SD slot
Battery is not easily accessible
I hate iTunes
practically no cracked/patched soft/games <----- Huge downfall!!
At the moment I can't think of much else.
I can't wait for Omni any longer, they've been promising it for over a year and nothing yet.
So my question is: Would you consider switching from the Uni to the iPhone, and why?

I have respectfully read and agreed with most points in that thread!
However! my main reason for getting the iPhone would be internet access and battery life. Yes! I said it! battery life! my Uni will not last 5 hours internet browsing + video + music + games + work (word, notepad, calc, txt, mail, camera and so on) And I don't want to get an extended battery as its bulky as it is.
As much as we all want to hate the iPhone (me included!), we can't deny its internet browsing speeds both on WiFi and 3G (which is at the moment my main interest) Also GPS, accelerometer (fun!) and the crisp LCD! + more of which I can't think of right now.
I also have a problem with my Uni losing signal quiet often, and I get complaints that I'm unreachable!!! and I have tried many ROMs and Radios to fix this.
I don't know if its the hype of the iPhone or my frustration with the Uni that I'm considering it.
I guess, I just want a phone that works and capable of browsing 3G speeds...
But I will miss all the necessities that PPC offers!
Why can't someone on this forum flash the iPhone with WM6.1???!!!! Now that would be sweet!
I don't know what to do, I'm in dire need of battery life + 3G speed + 3.5 LCD (and above) + compact and accelerometer lol
Any thoughts?
I had an Iphone and sold it....as a gadget is nice specially for its multimedia features, but as a convergence device falls short in many ways..I wouldn't even consider trade it back for my HtC tilt much less for the Uni.
Could you buy/check in your country Samsung i900 Omnia? Much more features than iPhone, everybody speaks very good about it, and in Italy even cheaper than iPhone.
If I had to choose between Omnia and iPhone no doubt for Omnia, but I still have my Universal and it still works so good (even better with all the ROMS here )

I completely agree with you and I'm not even thinking of it as a replacement of my beloved Uni no matter how many times my Uni losses signal. I've even considered carrying them both in my two pockets, and yes I am joking!! but the thought did cross my mind!
But wouldn't you confirm that the battery life is better, 3G/WiFi is faster, and undoubtedly we'll see some development as far as hacks and manipulations with the ROM... I'm really hoping that someone can flash it with WM6.1 now that would be an awesome phone!

We do have the i900 up here, but I don't want to downgrade to a smaller screen if anything I'd like a larger one. Aside from the screen size it's a very impressive phone!
I don't understand why manufacturers do this moronic.... THING!!!! its absolutely frustrating why would you compete (i900) with the iPhone which has a 3.5" lcd with a 3.2"!!!!???? if only i900 had a larger screen I wouldn't even turn my head in iPhone's direction....... uuuuhhhhggggghhhhhhh
Why not get a touch diamond or touch pro? I have gone from the XDA Exec (Universal) to the diamond and am happy.
The on screen keyboard is tricky at first but my diamond flies and gets over a day so far when using GPS / Wifi etc. I would have gone for the pro as I am very used to the unis keyboard but in the end I couldn't justify the £150+ on top of what I got my Diamond for to go with the Pro just for the keyboard, card slot and extra memory. Try one out you might be surpised how nice they are and what they offer

I wish it was that easy, but I can't seem to settle with a smaller screen size than the one I have now.. I simply can't.
I appreciate your recomendation but the screen size is stopping me from moving past this obsession with the iPhone! Also, the speed of the 3G/WiFi as I mentioned above is what pushing me to get the iPhone...
All the people I know who own an iPhone not only are they happy with it but with every passing day they enjoy it even more.
The iPhone is far from being a good phone for buisiness use. You have limitations with e-mails, you don't synchronise easily with Outlook, the contacts are not accessed as easily as on WM6 and that is a very important aspect, if you have many contacts in your list.
The iPhone will make you scroll much more through the list, which is time consuming.
I tried the browsing, but the lack of keyboard is frustrating. The browser might be quite good, but it is not THAT much better.
iTunes is too annoying for me - I don't want to synchronize my musics, I just want to copy my mp3 songs. I HATE iTunes and would NEVER buy an iPod unless they change that.
Then you get a completly locked device, no memory expansion, no SDK, no freeware,...
I know - there now is a free SDK, but it is limited (cannot access all funtions) and developers have to pay to publish it, which means there won't be freeware.
All in all, I would say, the iPhone looks good, is a nice gadget and suits a normal user fine.
I however like to have something more powerfull: great screen, keyboard, lots of software and emulators. Hell, on the Universal you can even run DOS!
Cheers,
vma

These are the reasons as to why I still haven't committed to an iPhone.
It would be very hard to go from a Uni to something so "LOCKED" and "ONE DIMENSIONAL" But I do need a fast internet browsing device and a better battery life without the bulk, and not to mention the ability to receive calls in a home's basement which my Uni is not capable of doing.
Perhaps I'll wait until the G1 comes out as orb3000 said but than again I've seen it and its hideous!
I don't know... I just need a phone that works with fast browsing abilities, but then again I'll miss all the things that the Uni and WM represent!!
Honestly try a touch pro or diamond for a few hours - get one and send it back if not happy? I think you will be surprised

ahhh...Not true, with the latest firmware you can search through your contacts like in WM6
[QOUTE]
The iPhone will make you scroll much more through the list, which is time consuming.[/QOUTE]
Again, this is not true; for alphabetically arranged stuff in a list you can use the Alphabet row on the Right hand side to quickly scroll, otherwise IMHO scrolling is a lot easier with the new Multi-touch vs taking out the stylus and using it to scroll.
[QOUTE] tried the browsing, but the lack of keyboard is frustrating. The browser might be quite good, but it is not THAT much better.[/QOUTE]
Again, safari is miles ahead of internet explorer, using NF or opera reduces the margin by a fair margin, but guess what, all the sites that have been "optimized" for the iphone really fit seamlessly with the entire UI, and that is what makes safari a joy to use. Actually if you have an iphone (or can beg, borrow or steal one) try going to web sites like google, yahoo, amazon, facebook and see the difference yourself
[QOUTE]iTunes is too annoying for me - I don't want to synchronize my musics, I just want to copy my mp3 songs. I HATE iTunes and would NEVER buy an iPod unless they change that.[/QOUTE]
with the new itunes and the 2.0.x firmware , you can drag and drop your music into your iphone.
if you don't want to sync your PIM to outlook, you can forgo itunes completely and use a "FREE" winamp plugin"
going a bit off topic i simply HATE active-sync.(i may be a bit biased here as i owned a palm pilot and simply loved the simplicity and stability of Hot-sync
[QOUTE]Then you get a completly locked device, no memory expansion, no SDK, no freeware,...[/QOUTE]
Again, when we got our devices (UNI in our case) did we not have to worry about CID unlock, SIM unlock ???
How is jailbreaking and unlocking the iphone any different than what we did??
As far as an memory expansion slot is concerned, HTC is coming out with more and more devices without expansion slot, so why just blame apple??
[QOUTE]I know - there now is a free SDK, but it is limited (cannot access all funtions) and developers have to pay to publish it, which means there won't be freeware.[/QOUTE]
1)Yes, the SDK is free but is limited
2)Search for open toolchain to know how to get complete access
3)since you don't use iphone/itunes you have NO CLUE about the amount of free ware available through itunes. And did i mention that most of the software on the installer app and CYDIA is FREE.
talking bout "limited access", did the CORE player guys ever get access to the nVidia graphic accelerator in some HTC's??
[QOUTE]All in all, I would say, the iPhone looks good, is a nice gadget and suits a normal user fine.[/QOUTE]
very true
[QOUTE]I however like to have something more powerfull: great screen, keyboard, lots of software and emulators. Hell, on the Universal you can even run DOS![/QOUTE]
1)Uni's screen is CRAP. on a mildly sunny day, at max brightness the screen is completely washed out and unreadable.Yes it does have a VGA screen but the color reproduction, contrast is really really bad.
the iphone's screen on the other hand is FANTASTIC. with the sun beating down hard, the thing is still very readable!!! not to mention the contrast, brightness and colour reproduction is very good.
BTW when will HTC realise that it is time to R.I.P for the 65k screens???
2)leaving the 3g stuff apart, the iphone is way more powerful than are UNI (which is to be expected as the UNI is almost 3 years old)
3)if you can run DOS on the UNI, i can run UNIX bash on the iphone
4)there are loads of free QUALITY softwares and emulators available for the iphone (free and paid)
P.S- i made the switch from my uni to the iphone last year in oct. and have not regretted the decision even once.
heck its been more than 3 months since i last charged my UNI

not a problem at all.
however bear in mind that your choice should be decided on what you intend to do with your phone.
if you REPLY to lot of emails/ need PUSH-email/edit documents / then stay away from the iphone.
if on the otherhand , you only read emails (or only occasionally reply) and want a good, simple and stable phone with excellent multimedia functions, go for the iphone.
on a side note, i felt that my UNI was never a good "phone", i always had problems with signal strength, people complained that my voice was to 'muffled' or choppy.
after switching over to the iphone, i have not experienced these problems, now it very well may be that my cell service provider has upgraded there equipment or installed a new tower in my vicinity, but i have reason to think otherwise
Never get rid of my Uni
Yes, I'll never get rid of it! It's a great device!
I laugh at those who carry around their laptops and cellphones. I have it in my pocket... Running WM, linux or Dos - trying to run Android, what would you want more...
hey guys just got my iPhone...
Would like to point out that so far I'm not impressed but I am loving the fast internet speeds. YouTube quality is absolutely horible; I am very disapointed with its quality very choppy but is still watchable.
I'm enjoying the fact that I can post using my phone, hoever entering text is very difficult and uncomfortable but I'm sure I can get used to it.
I will try to compare it to the Uni and report back

choppy video...
how fast is your internet speed???
Sorry I haven't been home enough to make a comparison to my Uni...
What I found out is that the streaming video quality of the iPhone is as much pixelsted as on any other device, so I take back what I said above.
The 3G speeds are well beyond what I expected and a significantly faster than on my Uni.
I am very pleased with it right now and I can't wait to jailbreak it. I wish we had a section for the iPhone on this forum...
I'm posting using the iPhone, and the texting i'm getting used to so no issues with that!
Overall very pleased!
P.S. I've yet to try out the games..
time for an iPhone 3G S tomorrow! yay...

anyway...enough of all this windows mobile ****...even 6.5 is a let down...

Well .. I'm quite disappointed too .. but iPhone just wont cut it for me. For example I require playback of non-converted videos in common formats (avi, mpg, flv). No smartphone can do that well at the moment.
I'm at the moment I'm staying with Xperia and hoping that Palm wont block 3rd part media player development ..
But sure, iPhone, especially the new one, looks great, and everything it can do it does better. Way better.

The panels interface was indeed the most useless thing ever. That's why I uninstalled it. Although you have had some problems with the X1, you'll encounter new ones with the new iPhone. Add to that, you'll be paying a bucketload of money for that new device. Why would you buy a MacBook? Windows mobile =/ Windows.

All in all, personally I prefer the X1 (or any WVGA HTC WM phone) over the iPhone because it's customizable. I like being able to tinker around with it. I also prefer Microsoft's approach (although, I'm aware, they're just as imperfect as any other company) to operating systems.
Then again the iPhone does have much better graphical support, smoother UI etc.
If only Apple and Microsoft would merge
iPhone is for tech illiterate sheep that want to look trendy in front of their equally degenerated friends. Flashy, useless, unproductive toy with features that phones had in 1999............
let us know how you like your iphone.
i was looking and playing with one the other day. it was ok but i like the customization that you can do on the windows mobile. i like the big screen but i didnt like the touch (capacitance?). i like to use my fingernails a bit and it doesnt work on the iphone screen.
The major problem with the iPhone for me is the lack of a hardware keyboard. I can handle a normal phone keypad, prefer a qwerty keyboard but cannot type on a touchscreen. I don't care what some people say, for me, a touchscreen keyboard is not good enough.

Its not just the xperia its self that puts it down - its the lack of a Microsoft Marketplace yet and Windows mobile 6.5 - xperia would be a lot better if Windows Mobile Market place was available and if the scrolling on it was iphone smooth other than that i like my xperia

have You ever had an iphone in Your hand? obviously You are talking nonsense. these days You can do almost every thing on ipod that it's doable on winmo. okay... it is not so customizable, but it's interface is simple and just works. works like a charm. I am keeping xperia only untill september and after that I'll get iphone 3gs or something else, maybe n97 or omnia hd. dunno... it pisses me off that for instance I cannot view videos recorded with my wifes n95 8gb without reencoding. that is just f... silly this days.

I guess when you get something like an iPhone it works fine out of the box you dont need to tweak it to get it right which is which is what i dont get from windows mobile devices - why are they not already tweaked to offer the best performance?
simple example - why, oh why those simple tweaks like increasing of glyph and filesystem cache are not factory set for performance??
couldnt agree more with u on the disappointment part, sony ericsson produced one hell of a **** expensive phone.. sometimes im even using my old 1st gen iphone :s
Xperia broken.
Last Saturday my X1 broke. I was at a party and decided to jump over a car gate at an old summerhouse. Thing is, it wasn't steadied at all or fastened in the ground, so it swung with my body, resulting in me landing hard on it and it gave my Xperia a good blow. Now half the screen is dead and the slider part is crooked, and I don't have insurance on it so it'll cost me about 100 - 200 dollars to get it fixed.
That is why I'm getting an iPhone 3GS when it comes to Sweden. I like the seamless Mac experience that just works (and is really great looking) and, actually, the fact that I'm not gonna want to flash it every other day.
Don't get me wrong here, I'm quite the avid customizer of all things techy, and I love playing around with settings and tweaks just to feel like I'm improving my device. Now really. I understand why the people here at XDA like their devices - it's because of the new roms. BUT. It's simply retarded for the company making the phone not to include those optimisations OOTB. I understand that a lot of things is set slower by default to gain battery and ensure a safe phone, but let's face it. An iPhone provides a better experience for ALL customers, not only the ones who know how to tweak their device.
I'd suggest by simple human psychology patterns that people like tweaking their phones because it brings them a satisfactory sense of being special - knowing something not all the owners of a particular thing knows. Though, think about it. It would be kind of nice to be free of the constant urge to flash your phone, all you flashoholics? I sure know that I feel that way. Sort of like being free from a time consuming freedom or wanting a schedule when you have nothing but free time.
That's just my two cents, I won't miss my Xperia much. I'm rather glad it broke (although it was a blow to my economics, but hey).

That's just my two cents, I won't miss my Xperia much. I'm rather glad it broke (although it was a blow to my economics, but hey).

Yea i started flashing my phone but then one day i realised that the stock ones are just as good really and more stable but your right about the tweaking and such it makes you feel like your phone is faster - Maybe when you start using your iphone you will start to miss and acknowledge the little things that make the xperia really good but we will see

I had smabergs's Touch X so I'll miss the nice sms interface, and of course the keyboard! Other than that, I'll make it through my switch fine
yes i know i might be in the wrong place, but how many HD users went iPhone and came back? and why?
i wouldnt consider buying a phone with less than a VGA screen
Well I have a HTC Touch HD, and I couldn't be more disappointed with it, so i'm thinking of changing to the iPhone.
It's a shame really, because the Touch is quite versatile, but there are pet hates that have grown too big now. 1; The battery barely lasts a day anymore and it's only 3 months old. 2; Winmo is a pain and constantly causes me to want to loose my temper when I try and reply to a simple text message. 3; there's better apps for the iPhone such as Facebook (i've tried the winmo version, and it's useless).
Maybe if I get one, then I'll land up coming back again, who knows?

Hey... I had an iPhone for a month while i had my HD as well...
Regarding your concerns...
1. Propably you play with your HD quite a bit or you have a faulty battery. If the first one applies then believe me the iPhone would last propably around 6 hours...
2. I dont understand why is that... I mean is simple.. the txt comes, you read it and then reply.. simple as that.. Ok it might take one second more until you get to the reply screen..
3. Its true that there are lots of apps for the iphone, but most of them are crappy things to get you excited, but there is no apparent use of them..
I found the iPhone to be more straight forward but very shallow.. I am into computers and gadgets a lot so WM is my thing and I wouldnt change to anything else at the moment.. HD is a great device and HD2 is even better.. I can't wait to get one..
Take care
I've had my iPhone 3g for 15 months now and despite what fanboys may spout on this site, it's not a bad little device. Apps are easy to find and if you sift through the piles of crap and fart apps, there are some real quality applications. It also has a pile of outstanding games.
However I have repeatedly considered returning for the HD and currently am waiting for the release of the HD2 which will be a definite purchase. The iphone is excellent it's UI is snappy and responsive. However everything is dictated by Apple. This means many features are missing, and when buying my iPhone I did sit down and think about missing features and concluded that many of the missing things were stuff I didn't use much anyway. However it's not just about the missing stuff, it's the way things that are added are half done. For example with Software 3.0 Apple introduced Bluetooth A2DP streaming, and yes we did get excited about something that should have been there all along. However to date they still have not introduced the system which initials I forget that, allows the use of Skip forward and back buttons.
Theres also this myth that Apple do things slowly and their own way so that "Everything just works". This is bullsh*t and in the last 15 months I've seen many updates which introduce bugs and faults, including one of the latest that causes the ihone to freeze in sleep mode and become unresponsive. The exact sort of thing that the Apple fanboys will laugh at Windows for doing, but strangely I never encountered.
I moved away from Windows mobile because for a while there was this strange direction for screens to become smaller and to need more buttons, which is exactly the opposite of what I wanted for a touchscreen device. However the Blackstone and even more so the Leo are against that trend. Big screens, low clutter and more finger friendly. With WinMo I won't be constantly waiting for Apple to release an update that breaks my chance of Jailbreaking or unlocking to a chosen network.
I'll be loosing a ton of great games, but in it's grace I can still sell my iPhone for enough cash to go out and buy a PSP.
Aesthetically HTC sense is beautiful too.
I have a Touch HD and I just got my friend an iPhone 3G S. I must admit that I really envy the iPhone's fast and smooth UI. But that's it. I played around with her iPhone and I found myself bored with it after a while.
So i don't think I'll be switching yet.
Btw, a guy named tuxhero was able to successfully port Android to our Blackstone. Check out Blackstone ROM development.
Hi,for business men , windows mobile is the best system . For gamer , iPhone was invented ...
I asked because I'm considering getting an iPhone and I keep thinking of all the things I'm going to miss.
I am thinking of not getting it because i'm going to hate the hand-holding and being dictated to re what i can and cannot do with my device, but i am not happy with where Windows Mobile is currently at.
battery life on the iPhone looks dismal
getting tired of the whole unlock/jailbreak constant drama.
I don't know what else i'd get though. Not impressed with the HD2, TF3D looks the same to me, no evidence of it being any faster (it being TF3D) and the whole weather thing is a gimmick...a couple hours and you'll be tired of it
I'd like to see some real world tests of applications.
Then there's the whole thing about buying a device before Windows Mobile 7 drops...
I give up
i have a touch hd and a 3gs and to be honest i use the iphone more but then thats maybe just down to personal preference
But the iphone has to be jalbroken to get a fullish benefit
i wouldnt ever tell anyone not to get a touch hd as its a lovely looking phone(better than the iphone in my opinion)and i think the screen size is just perfect
but at the end of the i prefer the iphone but theres not alot in it
I have HTC HD but yesterday bought an iPhone 3gs, and now the HD is up for sale
The reasons are many, however if you like HD and consider a switch - wait for the HD2.
The greatest advantage of the iphone is the appstore. Of course many many more things are important. For me - I couldn't stand anymore the WinMo! Mac OS X is absolutely fascinating! Before I buy an iphone, I had an ipod touch, so pretty much I knew what I'll get with the apple phone.
like i said not impressed by the HD2...its too big, i hate the buttons, and yes the benchmarks show its faster but the interface looks no different to me.
I find the itunes app store a gimmick...yes you get sucked into the idea that there are tons of apps...how many of them are useful...how many do you use let's say in a week?
i was seriously considering the iPhone purchase...and went through itunes and started downloading apps...from the appstore i've found a total of maybe 10 apps i liked...one's i'd actually use with any regularity? probably less than 5
I have HD and I played with iPhone 3G for couple days. Since I have SPB Mobile Shell 3 installed, iPhone's UI did not impress me at all. It was innovative old days, but now it seems dated.
It is fun to go through tons of apps in AppStore, but not that much useful and serious apps. But I have as much fun at ppcwarez Games are much better on iPhone. That is it. I really did not feel better responsiveness from iPhone. May be because I have custom ROM on HD. What I really like is that there are so many cool accessories for iPhone here in US, and almost nothing for HD
Anyway ... iPhone is good device. But ... I will never trade my HD for iPhone. I like customizations and that I can make my HD look and behave EXACTLY as I want. Looking forward for HD2.
i think you should wait for SE xperia3 (aka Rachael ) which will give you Android OS with 1GHz Snapdragon cpu, 4" capacitive touch screen and 8mp camera.
i own touch HD and ipod touch 3g (which is superior than iphone 3gs), and believe me, it won't provide you so much excitation.
converts
I have successfully converted 3 iphone users to hd htc after they saw it. All are current Windows users and felt that the combination of phone and os was a go. The fact that they all had to buy iphones locked to a carrier was also cause for them to deflect. Granted, the OS on the iphone is pretty nice but that's where it ends. Most people who see the HD are blown away by the screen, reoslution etc. Looking forward to HD2...
The HD was my Original chosen phone when upgrading in January. I had not even looked at an Iphone.
I was then given an offer my a relative of 30% discount for life on my O2 contract with an Iphone. I also had a free 16GB White Iphone.
I even Jailbroke it, my daughter got one too. After 9 Months I could not bear it anymore. They are a Wonderful piece of technology and design, but I had had enough.
Gone is the Iphone, and daughter too. I now have the HD, which I wish I had 9 months ago. Daughter has a Samsung Jet.
No more Iphone, Itunes. In are Bluetooth files a good camera themes and many more.
Chill.....
I've got both. Yep the iphone just works well-its perfect for my wife and kids. Now that you can cut and paste and have mms and video its a no brainer.
but
I really like the way you can customise with the HD and the screen is way better in clarity! The HD2 will be a no brainer for me-but my wife would never give up her iphone.
So-different horses for different courses.
i've had the HD for six months now, and the lack of games was almost enough to make me consider a switch this week.
I'm not huge for games, but there is nothing that holds my attention on the Tube, and now I see Red Alert comes out on iPhone this week!
Even a basic DOS emulator for the Touch HD, with a soft-button overlay, would be enough for me - for games like RA and GTA2.
The Qualcomm driver situation is also enough to make me look around more when my contract is up. And I sorely miss the Sony Ericsson cameras on their phones.

not particularly impressed by Android, but i am interested in why you think the iPod Touch 3g is better than the iPhone 3gs, i've actually been considering doing that, keeping the HD and getting the iPod Touch.

i said superior because they (3gs and ipod touch 3g) have same processor but 3gs' is underclocked to 600MHz due to battery and heat issues while itouch 3g's cpu is remained unchanged (i.e original 833MHz).
Apple provides no information on the processor used in the iPod touch 3G models, but third-party "teardowns" indicate that the 32 GB and 64 GB configurations use an Apple branded Samsung ARM processor running at 800 MHz (the same processor used by the iPhone 3GS, but not downclocked to preserve battery life).

I always find it amusing when people get annoyed with the games available for the HD..........Its a business man's/women's phone aimed at business people. It was never supposed to compete with the iphone on games. It you want to play games, buy a console.
As you can see from my sig, I've been using HTC WM devices for a long time. I really like my TP2, but I feel like there is better out there. Over the past couple months, I tried a G1 (loved android, but thought the phone was too outdated) and a Nokia N97. (awesome phone, horrible OS) I've also tried Android on my Fuze, and now on the Tilt 2.
I've also always had a hard keyboard, and can't see my self using a soft one. I've tried typing on my GF's iphone (great phone, awesome for her, but I hate em)and I do ok, but its nothing like a hard keyboard.
I am only really looking at the milestone because of the keyboard, but its getting some pretty lame reviews, I'm sure its not near as good as my TP2.
One of my huge gripes with these phones has always been lag, and slowdown/freezing. So I'm really leaning towards the Nexus. I'm just worried about having no keyboard. Also, it looks like the Nexus can be (or will soon be able to) flashed with custom ROMS. (which is why I love WM, HTC, and XDA)
So I'm on the fence about switching to Android. And I'm 80% nexus and 20% Milestone. Opinions? Has anyone here gone to Android from WM? Are you happy? Regrets? Will I miss my keyboard? Will I be cool with Android?

Hey, I recently switched from my fuze running energyrom 6.5 to a Nexus One and have NO regrets at all. The phone does everything my Fuze did and more, both faster, smoother, and sexier. It really is an amazing device. Good luck with your choice!

Thanx for the reply... one question. What about the keyboard? The keyboard on the Fuze was pretty good, and now your typing on a screen. Was it an easy transition?
the milestone HW keyboard sucks from what i've heard. definatly go with the nexus one.
just went to my local Best Buy to checkout a Droid, but they dont have any Verizons phones there. My nearest Verizon dealer is over 20 miles away, dunno if I wanna go that far just to play with a Droid...
I recently switched from my WM devices to a Nexus One and it's been very exciting. The phone does everything, easy transition, faster cpu, smoother, endless customizing, and the virtual KB is cool (once u get use to it).
I went from a sidekick to winmo(MDA - custom roms) for a couple of years to my G1 when that came out, I am a hard keyboard fanatic. So the MyTouch I got I was sure I would hate, I have 2 lines and while I still used my G1 as my main line I started to get used to the soft keyboard. Then came my decision of Droid vs Nexus or wait, I thought about waiting to see when/if they would release a version of the Nexus One with keyboard but then I decided to just buy it and worse case if they come out with one then I'll just sell it and buy that I guess. But i dont really have any complaints, the soft keyboard is actually pretty decent in landscape mode you really get used to it after a bit. In my opinion the minor concern of the keyboard is far outweighed by its overall performance. If they came out with a keyboard version yes id sell this to buy that, i love hard keyboards. However I would rather stay with this than have the droid. I think the droids pretty cool, 2 of my friends have it and I really like it but after using this beast I cant imagine using anything slower.
Well so far it seems the general consensus is I would get used to the soft keyboard, so I'm kinda over my fear of that. Now all thats left is my fear of leaving WM behind.
Also I forgot to mention, I'm on AT&T, so if I ditch my Tilt 2 for the Nexus, 3G is out the window. BUT, in my area I only ever usually see speeds around 400-600kbps, and Edge speeds of 200ish kbps. So I really wouldn't be losing all that much. I lived with it before when I had the G1, and my euro TP2. I have no idea when the evil empire (apple) will let att get any android phones, and I don't wanna wait.
Also, another thing. Email. I have an email addy with my ISP that I don't want to get rid of. Can you setup an email account (other than gmail) and have it check every couple of minutes? (like with WM)
I have a Fuze(and the hermes and kaiser previously) running the latest energyrom as well and my Nexus One will be here tomorrow. I'll report back after I play with it a bit. I can already tell ya that I'm bummed about the lack of BT voice dialing but I'm hoping they add it in future updates. I assume it will take abit to get used to the OSK, I've always told myself I need a physical keyboard so here goes nothing.
I also will be starting with the phone on ATT for a few days before I switch to tmobile. I'm hoping the 3g issue gets resolved on tmobile.
PS I like the screen name

Another thing, I have a folder full of sound files I've made (in .mp3 form) that I use for things like my ringer, txt, e-mail, mms etc..
Is it possible to use .mp3's for notifications w/android?
a lot of ppl here went from a 500 mhz windows phone to a 1gz android phone so of course it will be worlds apart.
try winmo on a snapdragon phone (TG01, HTC HD2) and things become so much better. Well depends what's available where you are - in the UK we get a lot of the good phones 1st simply because we have a compatible network.
I of course think I'm somebody and use two phones - a TG01 and a G1 (soon will be a N1 owner). As to which one becomes my regular phone - likely be the android phone - while the TG01 will be relegated to my media player. There is still nothng out there that can compare to the media quality of a snapdragon WinMo phone - Coreplayer players divx/xvid , streams and plays more audio formats.
Android still lacks any decent video playback and still stuck in the .mp4/3gp world. (Yes I can't be bothered to convert my vid files - why should I?)
Of course I am waiting the day when there will be the all in one phone and checking out the highlights of CES 2010 3 phones stuck out (google these):
the new unnamed Samsung running android with exact same specs as the Nexus (and with possible divx/xvid playback!)
the new Lenovo phone - lePhone running android with attchable modular keyboard CPU unknown...
The new LG phone - which I think was snapdragon - with 4.5 inch screen? More a MID or tablet but pretty sweet...
Ok there was news that winmo7 is coming end of march too but no demos..maybe at the MWC next month..

Yup... Make folder on the root drive as follows
media -> audio -> alarms
media -> audio -> notifications
media -> audio -> ringtones
If you put any mp3 on these folders, it will be alarms/notifications/ringtones respectively.
Also, they won't show up in the Music players if they're in these folders.
I was one of those that pre ordered the Dell VP way back in November 2010. By the time I finally got the phone, it became my primary phone for several months, before moving on to better hardware. I recently turned the phone back on and decided I preferred the Windows Phone OS to other platforms.
But, I found the DVP too slow and missing key items that similar primary phones had. I have an HD7 and I tried that too. But the HD7 hardware is close to 2yrs old if not more.
I eventually found a deal at T-Mobile for the Lumia 710 and purchased that. The deal was essentially a duh because it added nothing to my contract and cost $20US. Of course the 710 is low end hardware with 4g.
I've seen other new gen Windows Phone hardware out there.....
Titan
Titan 2
Lumia 800
Lumia 900
Radar
Ominas.
I was just curious, if you're staying with Windows Phone, what will your next one be?
Me, I have the Lumia 900 in site.
I REALLY like my DVP and I REALLY like WP7. There aren't any other WP7 phones out there that catch my eye so I'm going to stay put for the next 3-6 months.
I hope that Microsoft can find a way to get core apps like Pandora and services like VOIP to work like they do on Android/IOS. If so, I will have absolutely zero reason to go with another platform when it is time to upgrade.
BTW Alodar1, what runs slowly on your DVP?
Given the chance I would love to move to a Lumia 900 or a higher model from Nokia. The Titan II also looks interesting but I really dont like HTC so would probably not buy that. Also not really interested in owning anything from Samsung.
However as I am still on T-Mobile and am likely to stay here for the forseeable future I will have to stick with my trusty DVP.

I moved from the DVP to android G2x and evenutally the Bionic. Both are superior hardware wise, having 4g and several other functions like wifi N, and more.
I knew that android was just a fad for me, and that became true when I saw the Lumia 900. But still...I'd never had a nokia and the lumia 710 provided me some exposure. the 710 is faster than the DVP data wise. Since data is the primary way I use the phone, it is important. There is a significant speed difference here both by wifi and on radio.
The integration of Mango is almost the same so thats not a problem. Getting used to people hub is the biggest thing to get used to, but I'm good with it now. Calendar and contact integration is good on most devices. The skydrive app helps with visuals there.
I found an app, Cloud Music that links with Skydrive and will play stored music there. Its a v1 app, but works ok on the 710. I used Google lattitude for connections with my kids....but its somewhat flaky, working when it wants to....so its no longer the draw for me. Though its pretty cute when I'm in the restaurant and my daughter pings me and asks what I ordered....
As for Pandora...MS has come out and said, they consider Pandora a competitor. So I doubt we will see resolution soon on that. For me, the starbuck app is more important. Its the #1 app I use on android.
Most WP devices, first gen, were old design and hardware. the OEMs simply did not invest in them. With Nokia on board and a potential opportunity slipping away from the grubby money hungry mobile operators, Windows Phone is seeing some of the love of up to date hardware. It won't go dual core , yet...but, the 710 is a nice device. Gives me great hope for the 900.
I too used to be an HTC fan. But recently I've stepped away. From the Sense rendition on Android to the WP rendition...its a disappointment.
has anyone looked at the Omnia's out there? The new ones???

I just reread this and realized my thoughts may sound anti android. Not really. Its nice...but its extremely fragmented now...and hard to keep up with. I have a Xoom tablet with ICS. Love it. do MOST of my work on the tablet. But with the volume of android phones coming out....its a real mess...my opinion only....
Have you played with Windows 8? Just got an Acer W500 and waiting for the beta, personally looking forward to the final immensely. Love the integration of Metro UI and traditional Windows if I need it.

I'veonly touched the rawest of builds. Nothing optimized and nothing on the tablet. I;m going to reserve judgement on the tablet. Traditionally MS has had a MS uber alas attitude for periphials. I hope that changes. I think a fully funtional Windows tablet...that works....is unbeatable. when I say...that works it means:
touch works as it should, not as a work around
smart choices with thumbdrives and other external storage
sync ability with devices
remote syncing
skydrive access that is smart, not the limited interface we see now.
If MS gives us a functional tablet and a flexible os....I think the android OS will dry up. I love the idea of open source, but....within in reason. How do you globablly support open source and maintain security and compatibility? Use Android and netflix for example....OS v2.3.3 won't run net flix...but 2.3.4 will, if its a certain device. But how about 2.3.7...etc??? Right now its a cluster and not getting better. ICS supposedly offers stability, but the fragmentation has started with that one already and its only a month old. MS has an opportunity to drive a stake here....if it gets it close to right.
The difference between Seven and Mango is a breath of fresh air. But, Mango was in the path of seven all along. Features that showed up in mango, were finished and ready to go before NODO...this is a long, well thought out process for windows phone....I hope they stick to their guns.
There really isn't anything that interests me much. I refuse to buy a phone without a physical keyboard and there are basically no good ones out/coming out soon that we know about. The Galaxy Note interested me due to its sheer size, but the PenTile screen puts me off. I hated my Nexus One PenTile screen and while the DVP's isn't as bad, I don't want to buy another device with a PenTile screen.
I don't know why you're complaining about speed. Everything is really fast even if it is really old hardware.
I bought the DVP because of the hardware keyboard and the amoled screen. In the past few months, I've opened the keyboard maybe 10 times... that's how much i like the on-screen keyboard in windows phone.
A hardware keyboard will not be in my next phone's future although a super amoled or clearblack display most certainly will. I'm also holding out until Apollo gets released hopefully bringing in new screen resolutions and other features like NFC and I'm leaning very heavily towards Nokia unless HTC finally releases a WP with a super amoled display.
I don't see how people prefer on screen to physical keyboards. Physical isso much more accurate and faster.
I hope TMOUS releases the Nokia Lumia 900, or as rumor says the 910 with upgraded camera. I am also a fan of the HTC Titan.
Either way, the stock OS is great and doesn't require much modification to do exactly what it was designed to do which is work.
holding out until microsoft fixes the orientation lock thing. then we'll see if nokia makes a keyboard phone.

Someone made a homebrew fix. It was published on the portal the other day. Sorry I don't have a link right quick. I have a headache and its making thinking and looking at a bright screen difficult.

yes, i saw that homebrew. problem is, it disables the accelerometer completely, rather than stopping the orientation switch, and requires a reboot to re-enable IIRC. this setting really should be a quick access setting (like volume) rather than having to go thru an app.
i'll be honest, about 1/3 of the time i slide the keyboard out on the DVP just to lock orientation.

Totally agree, I think physical keyboard is more accurate and I have small fingers.

Not complaining. Ever ride in a Mercedes, then go home in a low end KIA or something. You become spoiled....even though the Mercedes is out of reach. With data speeds on the G2x and the Bionic, and now the Razr series, the data speed is blazing. Since most of my time on a phone is indeed data related of some sort, its noticable. Not like the Mercedes which is out of reach $$ wise, getting a dual core, 4g, android beast is very affordable. And I got used to it. If I never tried it, I could be of a different opinion...but it did.
With that said, the 710 with low end hardware, does indeed close the gap, alot. I've seen the reports from the TItans and some other devices, which lead me to no longer concern myself with the dual core question. But simple 3g vs 4g is an issue, and so is WiFi N availability. Both of these leave the VP in second place.
But, the VP is old hardware now. Its not so bad that you have to update, now. But, in the next several months, you will do it....as a normal progression.

Agreed, mostly. When the Dell was introduced, I had anHD7 in my hand. A Dell rep was at our work and pulled out the VP. INSTANT love affair. When he opened the keyboard...bing.....I was sold. During the entire time I used the Dell, I opened the keyboard ONLY to access the EM menu. Never did anything else. I eventually learned the feel of the phone and mistakes were rare. I was always impressed by Joe B's launch demo of WP7...with his wild typing...but it works...usually. But so does android and apple...but who cares.
I do know that MS is working on an NFC solution, and has been. I'll be interested to see what comes up....but for now that won't impact my next decision.
Regarding screen resolutions, I believe....MY OPINION ONLY, ... that first in MS's mind is the proper mix of resolution, speed, power overall, and battery life. Until they can master the issue of battery life, dual core and any other high power drains will not be part of WP. The Droid Razr MAXX was released today with a whopping 21 talk time claim. Of course, they doubled the pwer of the battery, so the efficency is the same as before....I believe MS is looking for efficiency improvements and not battery claim.
The truth is, I guess, I only purchased the 710 to see if I could handle a Nokia. I would not use this phone as my primary everyday phone. But, I now have faith in the 900, 910,930's I've seen reported by Engadget. Its better than even money I'll have 1 of these by June.

Same here, especially if I'm using it in bed at all.
I actually bought a used DVP a couple days back to replace my stolen iPhone 4 until something better comes along. So far, I'm actually a bit disappointed. Everything is great with the exception of the screen (stupid Pentile) and battery life.
I'm really looking forward to the Nokia Lumia 900, but until then, I'm not sure what to do. I suppose I can live with the screen for a couple months, but I don't know what to do about battery life. I really don't want to have to turn off push, but I also don't want to spend money on another battery when I'll probably replace the phone in a couple months.
I have been a DVP owner for over 1 year - switched from iphone 4 - and the Mango update breathed new life in to the phone - the lack of Internet Sharing is the only major problem I have with the phone given my 5 year old Palm Treo has this feature.
I recently cracked the screen on the DVP and was looking for a new option - I picked up the Nexus S and installed ICS 4 on it. Overall a great phone, ICS is complete and Android offers much more selection of apps and 'internet sharing' built in - you must spend a lot of time customizing as it is rather 'vanilla' out of the box.
Installed Swype on the Nexus S and it was decent - however, I am a physical keyboard guy and use the phone for work and email is the most important feature for me.
Long story short, after 5 days with Android I am back using the DVP with a cracked screen - as a business user I find the Windows 7 interface is much easier to "get in and out" for making a call, sending email, sms, webpage, etc. Also, I have ridiculously fast typing speed on the DVP keyboard, almost the same as a PC keyboard.
I am shocked that the portrait slider format is effectively dead - other than a BB Torch 9810 I haven't seen anything else on the market with a physical keyboard.
I would love to hear other people's experience transitioning from a physical keyboard, maybe I need to give it more time...
Also, if anyone has any rumors or just wants to make something up about a new portrait slider for WP7 or Android please post here...
