Some of the previous HTC models have had some severe build quality problems like dust under the screen, loud squeaking like on the Touch HD and so on.
This goes all the way back to the first WM phones that HTC did back in 2002/2003.
So how is the build quality on the HD2? Havn't noticed any threads about build quality problems that I can think of, so does this mean that the HD2 is perfect build quality and all parts fit perfectly together?
No dust under the screen, squeaking corners and no wobbling parts?
Buttons at the bottom wobble abit, on alot of hd2s there is a 0.5mm gap around some parts of the screen where it doesnt meet up properly, some people complain of loud speaker/crackling (i dont have this). There are some HD2s out there that are perfect build quality you just have to be lucky
mine is mint. gap around screen is barely noticeable and even, buttons don't move, volume wobbles ever so slightly but no more than I would expect, battery cover fits flush and even,..I've had two htc phones and regular contact with a third and this is easily the best..slightly off topic but related,I can also say that I've not seen a single software issuer either (stock o2 uk rom) EXCEPT for the straight line issue but only when the phone is cold.
verdict - extremely impressed.
There is supposed to be a small gap around the screen. Glass expands a little with temperature change. None of my buttons seem to wobble.
Seriously, it's the best build quality I've ever seen on a mobile phone. By far.
As said before, the buttons are supposed to "wobble" a little, because of the glass around them and so that you can click them.

Agree. HD2 looks and feels great - it has solid, expensive chassis. I don't have a single complaint.
HD2 indeed feels good in hands ... however, I got dust under the glass and in front of the LCD, which is getting more and more ...

Hi all,
I'm thinking about buying a Touch HD but I'm wondering about the build quality.
What about the rubber coating of the rear face? Does it easyli peel?
Same question for the coating of the power and volume buttons.
I really don't want a device which fwill soon feels used.
I'm a bit fussy with these kind of device...
Thanks!
I think its a good finish quality, like the diamond in front, and the Kaiser on the back (rubber-like).
But hey, it's my opinion!
When I grabbed for 1st time, I said it was a well build phone and still have that idea.
Cheers.
I've not noticed any problems with the quality of them. The touchy-feely (technical term ) back cover is like the Elf, which I have not had a problem with at all. The hard buttons don't really have a coating on them, but I suppose like anything, with enough usage it may show signs of wear.
The case is sealed with no gaps, the screen is flush with the rest of the case... It's great quality. There's a reason it was called Blackstone. It really is like a black stone.
Strange question
This is my 4th HTC Device Polaris, cruis,Diamond and finaly Blackstone.
I didn't notice bad build quality before and the only thing I can say is that the Hd seems a least equal or even better than the other one , especially for the screen .
Still all of this dveices have one big throwback :
IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP THEM CLEAN.
does it have some creaky sounds or something like this??
thx
The frame around the screen is it metal or plastic?
As for the diamond the frame is metal which I really like but the pictures of the Blackstone I have seen so far I suspect it is plastic.

its metall
and the backside is of a high quality plastic (feels like rubber)
THe paint on the back does have that tactile textured feel kinda like rubber I suppose (fetishist phones?.... ;-) ) - it's the exact same 'feel' [same paint finish I'd guess?] and look as my old Motorola Z3 phone - I was always concerned that would show shiny signs of wear around the edges etc - NEVER ever did - and it was used hard for a good year or so.
I'm hoping that this is the same finish as that - certainly appears to be

lol tell me about it. They are the mobile equivalent of getting glass desks, tables etc. Look good but will drive you insane at how quickly they attract fingerprints, dust and the like
For what its worth 2 other aussies got their HD today and pretty much said what others have mentioned. Front looks and feels good and the back has a solid rubbery feel to it good for grip.
Hi, does anyone have dust under touch screen and LCD close to volume up button. When you look on the sun or strong light.
Theres gap between LCD and top glass and bad sealing around. Have never had any spec of dust in TD1.
Hope its not gonna cover whole display soon... ((
Sent it to the service center, they gonna exchange display with top touch screen. Thats HTC display defect...
They just blowed away the dust between LCD and Touch screen (not perfectly), I think that glued LCD with touch surface is much more better, this is not very good solution on TD2. Im disappoited with HTC Company.
WELL, MAYBE IM TOO PERFECTIONIST...
After several disassembly of my TD2 (testing) found the place where the dust comes in... Will describe it with pics later on...
Nope. Just a spec of dust that got under my screen protector
I've got a spec of dust close to the speaker side of the screen
oh, 2bad :/
this is indeed frustrating.
i'm on the lucky side...for now.

Yes I have exactly that. Very annoying!!! I too hope it doesn't get any worse.
I have also noticed dust between the two layers of the touchscreen in bright sun light. IMO it's a severe design flaw!
I had dust under the screen yesterday and today. Right now it seems to have migrated away.
The Diamond 1's LCD disply and Digitizer were pressed and seald together as one unit I beleive. The D2 isn't and has a Gap between the glass and LCD. I much prefer the LCD up against the glass with no gap. looks sharper, brighter, and better.
I think they skimped out a little on the D2 quality to keep cost down and also economize a little. Look at the packaging. I really don't mind it because the quality is still good and HTC probably saved some bucks and will thrive and give us even better phones when the economy strengthens.

you're right.
I got a diamond last year.everything were perfect.
in 6 days ago, I got a Diamond2
the box..........so cheap..
well , that doesn't a matter.
BUT, when I check ....
1.the backplate is very shining ...............
What,.... when they were painting, they DID NOT check the dust on the
backplate.......
so , I change a new phone
2.the ups said that Diamond1 the display and that screen we touch or tap is a
same unit is really correct. In Taiwan, if your panel got any problems, you have to change the whole part.
at the final, to me , that isn't a problem ..
Because, the new Diamon2 I got , got a same problem
(dust in screen, and now , I can not find it lol.
but I have to say,
In taiwan , we really hope, HTC have got better and better..
with a bset quality.
hey diecorroder
so is TD2 good??

HA HA, in Taiwan that is a really really old conversation.
at the final, the point is
1.do you really need a 3.5 phonejack?
2.do you care about the size of you phone?
3.and the performance, it's same. Just like custom rom from Diamond2 can work on HD, so .. perfermance is not the point when you have to choose from the two phone.
to me, the HTC earphone I have is a really old model, but it got a gool quality,so I don't need a 3.5, and it's too big to put into my pocket
so I choose DIAMOND2
by the way , original rom in Diamond2 is really good..
(it is not my first HTC pda phone, I have got CHT9000,9100,9110,Elfin,Diamond..., but truely, it's first time I did not so hurry to find a custom Rom)
hey
well TD2 is new here in europe hehe..
3.5mm jack is stupid.read this.
http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=6885
The htc touch HD is 3.8 inch and TD2 is 3.2 inch its not that much of a difrance.
and the touch screen is better on the TD2.
so i will go for the TD2
one more thing, it says that TD2 supports WMV, ASF, MP4, 3GP, 3G2, M4V, AVI formats. Dose that means that i dont need coreplayer??
I have experienced the same problem of dust accumulating beneath the screen in the top left corner.....only had the device a week!.
I sent it back for exchange and have now received another new device. Ive noticed the screen on the new device flexes a little when you press it.
I guess time will tell, whether this will be as bad!
me too
My TD2 isn't even one week old and I have the exact same problem in the same position!
...really pisses me off. how can something like this happen to such an experienced class leading company?
this is just cheap!

It's beleive it is glass. I don't know exactly. Some people on here have complained that it is cheap flexible plastic but it is not the same as the Elfin. That was plastic for sure and I ave already replaced the digitizer on the Elfin.
We all know that there are 2 layers to the screen and I beleive it is what makes it more sensitive and accurate than other resistive screens. (among other things)
My Tought
There is a plastic membrane, if you take the stylus and look across the plane of the screen while pressing it you will see it flex. This flex is limited though due to there being glass. Tap and poke at it and you can hear/feel it. This is also proven by the fact that you can press with fairly great pressure and never come in contact with the LCD. You never get and color mixtures or whatever that's called. So the digitizer is 2 layers. A plastic to highten risitiveness of the screen and glass to protect the lcd and limit the memrane travel.
Pleas note that this is just what I have observed and noticed about the device and beleive it to be correct. Do not take it as 100% truth but please do observe the flexing and how you can press fairly hard without even touching the actual LCD.
Touch Freak, I belive you are right, makes total sense...
No other with the dust problem???
I want to migrate from TP to TD2... but if the dust problem persist I probably desist...

I don't have any dust problem with my TD2...

Yeah i just got my HTC HD2 the other day and so far ive been using the silicone case that comes with it..what ive noticed is that the phone feels so much better in hand without the case and wayy less bulky.
.my question to you guys is the build quality well enough to just put in my pocket and not scratch it. i know the battery cover is metal so no worries there but what about the soft coating on top and bottom. ?..
opinions from any of you that have not used a case? how is the condition of your hd2?
thanks.
ive had mine a week now, no case, in and out of pockets/phone holders and ive even dropped it twice (slippery bastid!)
not a scratch/scuff/mark other than pesky fingerprints!
im very impressed

I am interested to know how durable is the rubbery material and the rigid camera bezel under these conditions. Please share your experience. Does it scratch? Dent? Deep scratch/dent? Tiny hairline scratch?
1) Dropped
2) Carelessly placing it on the table or rough surface
3) Bumped it walking into something
4) Dropped it from your seat
5) Using it with the ring still on your finger next to the camera bezel?
Just how durable is this HD2's build material?
I personally agree with the reviewers about the build quality being just awesome. HD2 users can confidently use the phone without a case with ease as the metal n rubber coating pretty much wont get scratched / damaged easily. but.. one thing ppl have been talking bout is the glass screen cracking. i've dropped it once but so far so good, no scratches / cracks at all. but overall i would still say, really really good build quality.
I never had any screenprotectors or any screen protecting cases. Although I use it a bit without care (put the phone in a pocket without caring to much if there are any "scratchers" in it) I haven't noticed any scratch on my screen yet.
But I do have a silicon jacket! Not to protect the casing, but to protect the screen. I have seen way too many pictures of HD2's with a broken screen. And the screen was always broken in one of the corners. The silicon case (same model as shipped with the tmous HD2) definitely protects the corners of the screen when the HD2 drops. (tested )
FYI I have the HD2 for 5 months now

it is serious bull****, as leo's screen CAN be scratched. glass is covered with some plastic layer and just a tiny little bit of sand in Your pocket can do the damage.
I recall reading on one thread about somebody using a silicone cover on their hd2 and when they took it off it peeled the covering from the metal back plate so beware of certain silicone covers !!
Otherwise good solid build quality !! compared to iPhone
how many "no service" "cracked screen""missing button" "no sound"
"battery completely dead" iPhones will be listed on ebay today ? lol.
I wouldn't dream of using my HD2 without the leather case it came with, all other HTC phones I have had (four of them) I have taken them out of the box and put them right into my pocket.
But the HD2 is too nice and valuable to me to let it get tattered, I gently place it on tables just in case the silver cutting on the camera gets dented, in fact, 99 times out of 100 I place it on the case.
But then again I might just be overly anal about keeping it prestine.

Out of nowhere i got two scratches on my screen yesterday. Don't ask how..still in mourning...
I have just got my DHD, have two Desires and a Wildfire, and have been very happy with the build quality on them all so far. But on the DHD apart from the sim cover issue which seems to be well covered here, has anyone noticed the edges of the screen??? to me it seems the screen is to low in the case, on mine if yu run your finger across the screen towards the side of the phone, the case seems higher than the screen, and is quit a rough edge to it.
This is all round the edge of the phone. The screen seems to be aligned in the casing, it just seems as if it sits low and not flush with the side of the case.
Are they all like this? Or is this another build issue with the DHD.
Other than this, I am more than happy with the phone, and can put up with it, if there are more like it, but as I only have a seven day exchange, I would rather get one that is correct, if even this is a fault.
Cheers
Yeah mine is like that and prefere it as I don't use screen protectors so if your phone is placed on a surface the screen it self wont be in contact so wont get scratched easy. Weather or not that is reason for this I don't no but I do prefere it. Although they could of made the edges better as they are slightly to rough

Yes they are. Maybe it's designed to hold the screen higher when you put the phone face down, so it doesn't get scratched. Anyway if you put a screen protector (and I advise you to do it), it'll be perfectly flat.
Cheers everyone, feel a whole lot better knowing this. As I said other than that I am more than happy with my new toy. Soo many additional features from the standard Desire.
Only issue I have is affording a Desire Z as well to complete the collection
Cheers again, a screen protector is my next purchase, already have the htc leather pouch coming, as I have these for the other two Desires and my Wildfire, also have a gel skin coming as well, but will see when it comes if I am going to use it.
Any tips on a good screen protector to get?
Yep...go to the Accessories section or Ebay and Google should help you with your quire...

Hey, a couple of days ago it fell out of my pocket when getting into a landrover (which was quite high up). I had no cases on but i did have a screen protector. It dropped straight onto its side and did a backflip then finishing on its screen, to be honest i am very surprised that the damage is very mild, with only a few chips in the aluminium and no scratches on the screen at all because of the screen protector. After dropping the Dhd i feel i love my phone even more, i dont know why :L. Peace out!

You're DHD is unibody. Its a single piece of aluminium. You'd more likely break your floor than break that thing.

Well , its true the back panel is unibody .. "but there is a limit of tension that it can take after that ..... its history "
So keep your hopes low .... and try not to drop it
I did something similar. I pretty much threw my DHD across the road with it spinning on its screen. Only a tiny mark on the corner of the aluminium. Not a scratch on the glass.
get a case, the HTC one is really good
my mate fainted and fell down the stairs with his DHD in his pocket, it was virtually pristine afterwards
mines over 6 months old now and it's had some major use and it still looks brand new
don't think i'll ever change manufacturer , HTC build quality is fantastic
same here lots of heavy drops and still brand new, not one scratch on the screen, no screen protection, just the HD2 leather cover
the DHD seems immortal
also i don't know if the HTC Sensation is as rigid, the whole thing is completely detachable from the unibody, so similar falls might detach the whole thing
on the other with the DHD not even the plastic covers ever detached, its why its so hard to open i guess which stupid reviewers keep complaining about

I had a real issue with this when I first received my DHD. I couldn't open it. Obviously I was unhappy and thought it was terrible but now I realise that you have to compromise somewhere to have such excellent build quality and general solid-ness.

I actually think the covers are easy to remove once I learned how to. It was very difficult for me at the start, but now its no harder to open up than any other phone. Lesson: RTFM.
The build quality of the DHD is superb. No drops here, but it did survive being keyed accidentally without any marks or scratches.
Actually, even I've had some problems with open the battery cover. The guy from the store I bought it from said that mine was unnaturally stiff. That thing takes me around 15 min to get open.
The sensation is actually more rigid. The Unibody design continues into the battery compartment and is really solid. The cover is merely a design.
