HTC Magic help (Vodafone) - Android Software Development

Helooooo
I'm a complete noob (but quite bright ) so thank-you for your patience in adavnce.
HTC Magic, love the phone, hate the operating system. Is there any way i can load a new operating system onto it say the 'HERO' software for example?
I want it to do soo much more like Bluetooth push etc.. but it runs out os steam.
Can anyone out there give me an idiots guide on how to do this and any fail safes, i.e; backing up current operating system with a view to re-install if thing go wrong!"??
Many, many thanks in advance

Hy, yes there are ways to install others software on your phone. We installed Hero on HTC Magic from VODA. But if you want something without limits try Cyanogen. You will have more options than Hero.

HTC Desire newbe help.

Hi all,
I have just aquired my first Android (aka HTC Desire) after becoming all to familiar with Windows mobile!
My phone is from vodaphone with Android 2.1 and bootloader .80 version. I am unsure if it is branded but i suspect that it is as there is as vodaphone scene amongst the installed htc scenes although there dosn't appear to be anything else 'vodaphone' on the handset.
I have trailed through many forums (mostly this one) but haven't been able to provide wholly satisfactory answers to my questions and was hoping some kind sole would take the time to assist me for which i would be eternally greatful!:
Here goes:
My object is to flash my device with Froyo with the sense ui embedded which i have allready seen.
1. Is my phone actually branded and, if so, do i have to address this before i can continue. If the answer is yes, could somebody point me in the right direction?
2. Do i need to root my device to install Froyo and, if so, again could somebody please point me in the right direction(bootloader .80)
3. Assuming success, can somebody point me to where and how i can locate and install the best version of Froyo with embedded htc sense for my device.
If this is impossible with my device, i would appreciate someone in the know to break the sad news to me and i will wait (with my allready full Desire) for Vodaphone to send me my Froyo update! (perhaps for Christmas if that's not too optimistic.
1) is it branded? if its issued by vodaphone, chances are it is.
To root branded devices, you'll need a goldcard, follow this link (its specific for htc desire) :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6710085&postcount=3
2) to install froyo BEFORE the official release , yes you'll need to root it.
It's quite an easy process, took me under a minute using a one-click program.
Rooting guide :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709146
3) best version of froyo with sense ... hmm
i'm using DeVillianRom but that's just my opinion of course
all roms can be found here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=628
hope this helps, make sure you check the HTC desire section regularly
Thanks jdebunt for your prompt reply.
I will be trying this out tomorrow morning and i am very grateful for your time and help.
After a year of 'messing' with windows mobile i was actually able to assist people with various problems! I have had an Android for one week now and have found this forum invaluable for understanding this excellent (almost) device.
I say almost as, after researching the Android platform, i failed to notice the lack of embedded apps2sd (until Froyo) which i think is a critical ommission.
Sorry to waffle on and thanks again and i will report back as to how it goes.
(One week old.....bricked???)
no problem, glad i could help
i do indeed rejoice at the sight of installing apps on SD because of the 2.2 roms, tho sometimes the apps load very slow...but that'll be sorted soon probably
if there's anything else, don't hesitate to drop a PM

Thanks the advice so far guys but i still have no clue whatsoever to what NAND is and what HPL flashing is! I really like my friends android phone (HTC DESIRE HD) but if i install it will i still be able to make calls and text as normal? I've read stories of people hearing distortion during phonecalls, so it would make the phone pretty useless. If i knew what some of the jargon meant I'm sure i could make an attempt

Installing Android on NAND simply means the O.S. boots directly off the device rather than off the SD card as it once was...Flashing HSPL can be defined as unlocking the bootloader of your device..doing this enables u to safely flash custom WinMo or Android builds successfully..It's EXTREMELY IMPORTANT u flash & confirm HSPl first before anything!!
Flashing custom ROMs is quite easy once u get d hang of it...Instructions are always provided to avoid bricking (rendering ur phone un-bootable) and i've lost count of the number of flashing i've done to my device...
Yes u'll be able to call, text & mms...other stuffs lyk 3G, H, Wifi, Bluetooth, gps etc are ROM dependent..I'm running a gingerbread build (check sig) myself..But i'd advise u 2 start with a froyo build lyk CMY's ROM...Its an awesome ROM i used for over a year.

best to search youtube there are so many tutorials on how to get Android on HD2 just search Nand HD2 hope this helps you
that's great! what does radio mean then?
i think radio is the software of your phone determining the behaviour of wifi, bluetooth etc. for present roms it should be 2.15.50........you can see it from the 'phone software inf.' in settings.

[Q] Which Android port is the most stable for HTC HD2?

Hi Friends!
I have had experience in the past with iPhone's and iOS, but now I am putting some hands at Android phones.
Actually, I have a HTC HD2 with a poor operating system, which is Windows... I want to port Android there, and my question is, which one of the Android OS is the most stable in this phone. I know there are various versions of Android available for the HD2, but I am looking for the Android that will perform flawlessly and is the easiest to port (straightforward, using tool, not coding), I don't want to put my head in danger on the first attempt.
Which of the Androids works best on HTC HD2, and what tools do I use to make the port for that particular OS version.
Thanks in advance,
Best Regards
PS: provide me with direct links please!
IMPORTANT: by default this phone was factory locked to T-Mobile US, now I am using it outside the us in another country, but I did not perform anything on it to change the radio settings, the person that gave me the phone has unlocked it...If I port Android to this phone will it risk the radio settings (I would not like the lose the possibility of using it with other carriers), or porting Android does not mess with the radio at all...
For future reference, what type of Driver/Tool is required to have installed so the phone can interact with computer?

If you used the search tool or Google you could have easily found 100+ threads about the best ROM.
I would say use a CM7 or MIUI ROM. There are tonnes, don't be lazy, I CBA to post links (yes, that is very hypocritical of me).
As far as I know Android won't mess with your carrier stuff
To install just download the HD2 NAND Toolkit, install HSPL, MAGLDR, CWM then ROM (see this guide).

I tend to understand that he wants to PORT and not INSTALL an Android ROM. Isn't that correct?
If that is what you are asking then Gingerbread non-sense is currently the easiest to port. you can use the kitchen found within the development forum.

I wasn't too sure, but I assumed that the use of the word 'port' was simply a misunderstanding, in the same way that many people say that they have 'flashed' an SD Android build.
@OP, If I was wrong then I take back what I said about not searching and stuff cos this is clearly not something heavily discussed and there isn't as much information available about it.
In my experiance hyperdroid cm7 has good speed stability, and battry life. This is a minimal rom with not a lot of fluff. If you like iphone fluff i would suggest ndt miui stable, miui has iphone simple fluff with andorid power, while cm7 has extended power user features like cpu controll built in.
to learn how to do this look for a newbie thread. They walk you form stock with being locked down to android and unlocked for flashing new roms.
I would go for hyperdroid it's fast and stable.
