Anyone else having this problem ? The video plays a blank screen, then shows one frame from the 20 second MMS and then shows that same frame to the end.
Is no one else having problems playing MMS videos ?
Uhh I haven't gotten any video MMS so I couldn't tell ya.
I do know that youtube and other video works... but probably not the same thing, right?
No
I get an MMS from an iPhone and it really struggles to play.
I got a picture message the other day and it made me play it like a video, it was 19 seconds of black screen and the last second was the pic the person sent me.
My Acer liquid did exactly the same thing, i havent gotten an MMS on my nexus yet to test with

Hmm I wonder if they sent me a pic not a video ... never tested that !
Will send myself a video
I suspect MMS Video is quite rare (not helped by phone providers calling MMS 'picture messaging').
Constructing a full SMIL presentation sequence and sending it to an N1 would be interesting to watch... I'd be shocked if it worked even slightly.
just sent myself a video and I get a blank message and another message from O2 saying I can see the video online at www.o2.co.uk/m
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm
Video at O2 is empty ... completely blank.
Probably means O2 think you don't have a phone that's capable of receiving it, so they filtered it out.

It sent a blank to start with ... fairly certain my settings are A-OK too.
Yeah they stripped the video, then sent you a message telling where it was.
You might have to get O2 to switch something at their end, or maybe using an alternative SMS app that allows you to pretend to be an N95 might work (although it might not - back in my iphone days I remember going through that pain with O2.. never again).

Yeah I am thinking of moving to T-Mobile but just recently discovered they have no signal in my place of work.
Vodafone has great coverage everywhere except my home (but they do have a femtocell as an option).

The video I received on the handset was the right length but blank.
Then I received a message on my handset saying the video was at o2.co.uk/m but that video was empty.

Ive done alot of searching on this topic and i cant really find a straight forward fix for this on a wing. Has anyone performed a working fix for this? Its driving me nuts.
I think it has to do with the low resolution that most phones send their MMS pics at. Our phones are too awesome to view those tiny pics well. I had a buddy send me a pic from his blackberry and it looked much better. The only fix would be for your friends to buy better phones like you did.
Then again, I could be wrong and I am nowhere near the education level that these other guys and gals are on about this stuff. I am still in awe at what these people come up with.
I have the same problem as you. From my own conclusions, It seems to be a bug in WM6, because it will automatically resize ALL MMS received pictures to 7-11kb.
Even when you send a picture to yourself, it goes out in the correct file size, but you received it scaled... so i dunno what the issue is.
It may be a problem, where the phone isn't registering correctly on the TMO network, so the servers don't know what type of phone you have, so you receive resized pics ...
It may be just a bug inside the actual phone, where it resizes the pics...
it is unknown, and of course, Tmo is completely retarded, and they won't admit to anything. As far as they know, "this is the first time they've heard of this type of problem occurring" but they claim they are working with HTC on a fix.
it is complete BS, and I suggest that EVERYONE who has this problem, call TMO and complain so we can get this fixed... it really sucks to spend a couple hundred bucks on a phone and it won't work correctly.
Well said.
i read somewhere on here where someone made some cab files that fixed the problem but the ones i tried that were supposed to work for tmobile didnt work for me. this mades me sad
those mod cab files didn't work for me either....
Im pretty positive it's t-mobile resizing incoming MMS messages. Ive had the issue when using the Universal and now the same thing persists with the Advantage. When I send MMS to other networks, the files come through original size, but when I receive from other networks or when I send to myself, the image comes through reduced to <15k. This only seems to happen to JPEG images which can be easily resized on the fly. When I receive .gif animations or .3gp videos from other networks or from myself, the image is left untouched.
well, its absolute sh*t You'd think for the amount of money we pay for these phones, that they could be a bit more serious about solving these problems.
it seems they resize depending on how your phone identifies itself to the network. when I followed the instructions on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1505432#post1505432
the situation fixed itself.
AMAZING! This worked!! I am now receiving normal sized MMS!!
I was hoping that upon flashing the PDAVIET rom from the stock tmobile rom, this situation would fix itself... and I was dissapointed when it didn't ... but once I did these cabs, i started receiving normal mms pics!
is there an updated way to fix this problem with the OPEN TOUCH roms?
Well, thats it, I actually can't pick up my phone when I get a call. I can push the green pick up button as many times as I want, but it wont respond, and I end up having to call people back. Anyone else with this issue? (phone info in sig)
I am only going to take a guess and say that you have a lot of programs that run in the background.
Maybe try not using auto rotate.
I agree with Neobbs although when I first read the subject, I thought maybe you needed to work out more....
Same problem here. I can have the phone in my hands looking at it straight up when the phone rings and the phone goes black for about 5 seconds (or about 2 rings) and then the caller id comes up and I start hitting the call/talk button to answer. It goes to VM eventually and me hitting the green button ends up bringing up the recent call list. Auto rotate is disabled, but I do have weatherbug, open home, caller lookup and IM running in the background. Oh... and I have the transistions/animations enabled. That's all i can think of. I'll try removing the caller lookup app to see if it eliminates the problem.

I think it's a good, fair and valid question.
Do you have installed a customer ring tone ? if yes, choose original ring tone and try again.
I had the same problem when I started using my phone. I dunno what changed but the prob. has disappeared or I got used to hold the pickup button down for a bit longer automatically. I got the feeling that this helped the issue.
My phone is RC33 not rooted... and to answer you question: I've tried but I'm still fighting with my XP to accept the USB driver.

has anyone found a solution for this problem?
Using RC33 with weatherbug running in the background, but it occurs with it installed and without it installed

Yep, must be terrible if about 4 or 5 people have this problem out of the thousands who have bought it....
I've never had any of these problems, but im guessing they're (probably) firmware related.

most probably just call back and arent bothered to find out how to fix it on xda
anyways, when you say firmware related, what did you mean?
I installed JF 1.42, and before that, his earlier versions, and way before that my phone started out with RC18, which I then rooted. Would it be linked to that? I've wiped my phone like a dozen times, but the problem is reoccurring perhaps once or twice a day, out of about 30 phone calls a day
additionally, although this may be linked to t-mobiles ****ty service, have you guys noticed a large increase in dropped calls?
I use my phone in both austin tx and houston, and in both locations, about every 10 calls is dropped, I dont know if its just the horrible service they have, or when I move from a location with 3g to edge.
With the new radio, the dropped calls have reduced in number, but still occur randomly
Also, one more thing, and a little off topic, but this has been bothering me,
Is there anyone to get a SMS application that allows me to type using a numpad or something similar on the screen? or at least, have spell correct, cause chompsms' keyboard is way too small to use one handed and still have legible messages, unlike the iphone where the errors would be auto corrected

I'm in austin, tx too and I also get the black screen of death almost every time I get an incomming call so maybe it is a location based thing? My g1 is rooted and I have over 70 apps installed and I'm not about to uninstall them 1 by 1 to see which one could be causing it. In the past, rings extended was said to be the one causing the problem but I don't have that installed.
Also, there have been enough requests for t9 and auto correct with chomp, I'm sure it will be in the upcomming updates
Im running Haykuro now and haven't had a single incident so far. Also, I have 73 (yes, seventy-three) MB of free system memory as I moved pretty much EVERYTHING to the SD card. In return, my phone is unable to boot without my SD card... which is a bit strange.
I've owned my Rogers Dream (rooted, no custom ROM) for a couple of weeks now - this bug has been around since the start but it's getting worse these days and it's really starting to bother me.
Basically what happens is I'll get the notification for a text message. I can see the summary in the notification bar (with the new message), but when i open a messaging app (the default one or Chomp) the message won't be there. SMS Popup will also just display the previously most recent SMS in the conversation.
It seems like the system just isn't saving the message. Besides for the notification (which disappears after i clear), it's as if I never got the message. It kind of sucks...
My searching skills came up with nothing so i'm wondering - has this happened to anyone else - any idea what the reason could be - please let me fix this.
Thanks!
Well blyn100, interesting you should point this flaw out. I have a similar issue, but so far only 1 contact has given me this same summary with no msg. Trying to figure out the source of this problem, right now I have one suspicion. A few times, i think i received these msg's after being in a no service area. I am curious if this might be a possibility for you?
Also, I have similar phone setup as you, ie same stock Rogers ROM, obviously since no choice...yet.
i have the same issue
i had a thread started, but no response yet as to how to fix this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=542178&highlight=SMS+issue
but now it seems like more and more ppl are having this issue (or it is more apparent)
its the same with Chomp, handcent, even the native app
Looks like this is mostly just a Rogers issue then?
Most of mine are occuring when I have pretty good reception, so I think i can confirm that that's not it.
Proccessor usage / avaiable RAM is what I'm leaning towards though. I might try uninstalling the virtual keyboard to free up some RAM and see if it helps anything.
Or just a bug in the stock ROM. Seems like for this to happen, the network is sending the message to the device and the device just forgets to save it, but confirms to the network that it got it. Still, i have a hard time believing a problem like this would suddenly appear for the Rogers build.
I had like 3 dropped ones last night, it's starting to get really annoying.
Are you sure it's not the timestamp bug? Look further up in your conversation to see if SMS' have been inserted there.

Yup, i checked all of the conversations, this isn't the case for any of them.
I had this issue on my T-Mobile G1 with the Rogers' ROMs. But I haven't had issues with Cyanogen builds...
Hello XDA Team,
Firstly, I want to say a huge thanks to the contributors of this forum as I've silently benefitted from your work over the past year on my previous phone, i900 Omina. Unsurprisingly I'm one of the many people who was tempted by the HD2 as it's effectively everything I always wished the Omnia would be - in principle.
So, I received my HD2 last Tuesday (direct from T-Mobile) and my number was ported from Vodafone on Thursday. After using the phone for a weekend I arranged an exchange as I believed my handset was faulty due to the crackling and resonating sounds from the earpeice. When I searched online I didn't find anyone with a similar complaint so I assumed mine was faulty. The replacement arrived on Tuesday and it's exactly the same, only this time the bottom row of buttons isn't a good a fit as on the first. Small issue that one and not really a deal breaker. A bit more searching and this time round I found the lists of post from people with the same sound quality complaints.
The issues I have with this phone are:
1) The crackling speaker - resonating to people's voices.
2) The SMS functionality, slow loading of messages and formatting bugs with the date stamp for one message overlapping the previous message in a thread, changing text size doesn't apply to every text in a thread.
3) The Contacts app freezes everytime I make a change to a contact, rendering the phone useless for about 30 seconds after each change. This includes when I add someone to the favourites list in Sense.
4)Random slow downs of Sense when hardly anything is running in the background (just Comm Manager)
5) The camera, even with the hotfix still has reddish/pinkish colouring to the middle of the picture
6) videos I recorded with the HD2 won't play on the HD2!!! Eh? What's going on there?????
Now I can accept software issues as I know these will be fixed eventually. My Omnia was a much better phone after a year of owning it than when it was first delivered almost solely down to ROM updates. However I am genuinely concerned that the speaker crackling is a hardware fault and not software, hence never going to improve.
Which brings me to my dilemma. I bought this phone from T-Mobile, which means I have a 7 working day period to return the phone and cancel my contract with no penalty. Today is the last day of that period, so I need to decide today whether to return the phone or to percevere.
I'll add a bit of balance to the dilemma by listing the things I love about the phone, which ultimately are the reasons which I would want to keep it if the issues could be fixed:
1) The screen the screen the screen!!!!!
2) Facebook integration with contacts
3) Great web browsing
4) Good music player & 3.5mm headphone jack
5) 3G, HSDPA and WiFi
6) WinMo so easy to sync with work Outlook and keep my Omnia contacts and SMS history.
7) Slim design, easy to pocket.
There you go, I have until the end of today to make my decision. I honestly don't know what I would replace the HD2 with IF I do decide to return it for good but 18 months if a long time to be using a phone which is supposed to be state of the art but stuggles with some of the fundamental jobs of a mobile phone.
Thanks for your time
DC.
Send it back.
I've had one now for over a month and it's great.
I don't have any of the problems you have.
I did have a slight pink tinge when I focussed at close range on a white sheet. But with the recent hotfix that is much improved. Anyway, I don't often photo white sheets !
I also don't video at all so tried your problem and I can confirm it's super simple to video and then playback (it's offered as an option after the recording is stopped).
I would send it back and ask for a new one and insist on an updated ROM.

I agree with sending it back as faulty. Say you want another two weeks (or however long it is) with the new one as this one has been so faulty you need to re-evaulate when you get the new one whether you want it or not.
As for insisting on an updated ROM, don't even think about saying that to your phone provider. None of them have updated ROMs yet, and probably won't for a long time. They're likely to wait until the majority of bugs are ironed out before going through the lengthy process of "updating" a ROM for their customers. Seriously - just ignore that advice. Hi
Instead of writing here your complaints you should have read some of the threads explaining your problems. I advice you to backup your data then hard reset your device and reinstall your programs one by one and eliminate the program which is eating your HD2's memory. At least half of your problem will be gone after hard reset.

I'm sure they'd advise you on a massive 32MB ROM SD card that you could put in and store all your music and video on.

Oh I've been reading the threads here non stop and have hard reset the phone three times since receiving it. The only programs I've installed are BSB tweaks and the YouTube app which T-Mobile has removed. Otherwise it's untouched.
My main issue is the crackling speaker, which if you read my post you'd see that I'm happy to wait to sort all the software issues out over time, but hardware issues are different.
My problem is that T-mobile will not do another exchange. They will only give me one chance to exchange then it's either cancel or keep. As I'm on my 2nd handset already, it means I have to make that decision today.
I know some of you hate to see posts from people who are considering ditching their HD2, but that's the reality. We exist. I'm an existing WinMo user too, not even one of the iphone brigade.
I can imagine the issues you're having are annoying and I must admit I've also experienced some of them.
1) Crackling: not a problem for me. I use a bluetooth headset (plus I'm a a bit deaf anyway) so I don't notice any crackling. Have you tried a headset? Any headset? Does it still occur or is the problem only from the external speaker and earpiece? I know others have complained about the volume but thought it was fixed in a newer ROM
2) Messages loading: yes, a real pain. Have you tried the workaround which is to click "Send" as soon as the messages start loading, then click "No" when prompted to send an empty message?
3) Contacts: I haven't had this problem, but then I haven't added users to any groups as they were already set up on my X1.
4) Random Slowdowns: yes, I must admit, this happens to me from time to time. Although you might think that nothing is running there are some processes that aren't visible by default that may be consuming the CPU's time.
I've been using Leo ROMs for quite a while now and if you think it's bad on the HD2 you should've tried it on the X1 to really appreciate the speed and stability of the Leo. OK, perhaps not an acceptable answer for you but some things you just have to put up with and blame not on the phone but the underlying OS (yes, Windows!!)
5) Camera: I've noticed the pink tint too even after installing the hotfix. Annoying, to say the least!
6) Camcorder playback: Works for me!!
The camcorder issue must be 1.43 T-Mob rom related. This new handset has the same problem as the 1st one. It will record video, but won't playback.
I also have annoying freezing when I try to do the simplest of tasks, like emptying the deleted messages folder in the SMS app, to the point where the back cover comes off and the reset button has to be pressed.
BUT, when it works properly I love this phone. I guess if I keep it I'll be flashing new ROMs like there's no tomorrow. Obviously I haven't done that yet as I can't risk breaking the warranty on a phone which I may return.
Get it on O2 and apply the hotfixes... seems to be the better rom
Sod it, I'm keeping the phone. There's nothing else on the market that interests me, and no reason to think that the hardware on the upcoming Nexus will be any better if it's also an HTC handset.
I've got an SD card primed with Goldcard and 1.61.....I'm not gonna take the plunge just yet, but I've read some of the positive feedback on the newer ROMs. Once I've given up on T-Mobile releasing a newer ROM, then I'll get flashing.

Good decision chap. Just take the time to apply the fixes and you should be there.

It wouldn't surprise me if HTC haven't already got their sights on another ROM which has all hotfixes plus the one they are working on for the SMS fix that doesn't work, a hotfix to fix a hotfix lol.
Eventually they could even release android for it, why not? the hardware is what is keeping me glued to my phone, its ace. they owe it to us!
If it's O2 then you do get leeway (or used to) with regards to what you report as bugs and what they'll do or at least they used to.
When HTC Universal came out that was riddled with bugs and even the phone app didn't work properly (nearly put me off winmo phones for life, HD2 has been my first since) so anyway I called up after the 7 days said look I love the phone but these bugs are killing me. So they sent me another one which I tried and found the same bugs with, so they let me get a different model instead, and this was WAAAAY outside the usual 7 days because the phone was faulty. The 7 day rule is really there for if you get it and you just don't like it, not because it has issues, if it has issues then different more lenient policies apply.
My suggestion would be do the same tell them about the crackling etc and other bugs and get them to send you another, if it's still got the same issues then you've still got the option to swap.
Also without going into too much detail take your time sending yours back, you might find they'll let you keep hold of it for longer then you'd think
Hoi Pipeloi my fellow HD2 and other HTC owners
This is not just a poll its kind of a petition for the official SMS bug Fix
that HTC "wont" try to Fix...
The bug only shows up when you have 20+ smses of one or more contacts. Sense reloads these smses for no reason en slows down the device.
you can do a little trick for a faster load but that wil not help mutch : when you open contacts smses press send and there wil be a popup just press no and voila all smses are quickly reloaded...
Vote: Yes please HTC please...!
Vote: Pfff never mind... my next device will not be a HTC Phone...

Ok thx -- its done
I'm not sure if this will help, but when I flashed the official O2 Rom 1.72.206.3 a few days ago, the sms delay problem seemed to have dissapeared. I tried two contacts that have threads of around 100 sms messages with no delay at all.
I'm using the new O2 ROM (1.72.206.3) aside from it being absolute CRAP the SMS issue still persists. Among other things, which are much more annoying, like the constantly skipping music (even with hot-fix), but nothing more annoying than my phone locking up and belching out its load ass ring-tone while vibrating it's self to pieces if I don't pick up fast enough, which obviously requires me to remove the battery, something I have to do at least once a day.
I'm still using a stock ROM because I'm debating my next move, which is likely to be that O2 are going to get this phone shoved up their ass.
I'm tired of this device, I'm also tired of watching my old iPhone 3G (which my wife now has) working flawlessly, like it did for me. I'm also still puzzled to why I made the decision to get a HTC HD2 when the iPhone 3GS would have solved all my gripes with the original iPhone 3G (being slightly slow).

Perhaps you've got a lemon Phil and you need to bring it back to O2. I'm using the same device with the same rom and the same hotfixes. I have zero lag on my sms messages no matter how long the thread and my music plays fine. I think your other problems may be down to settings and tweaks which is something WM users need to get used to (although most, like myself, enjoy the tweaking very much). My wife is happy with her iphone 3GS too, but I think the HD2 is far superior for my needs. I'm not trying to start an HD2/iphone debate, there are already too many on the forums, I'm just saying that given a propper device with the propper tweaks and mods, you've got one envyable phone there.
You guys who don't have this problem, what ROM and radio do you have?
