Phone call and browse internet at the same time? - Nexus One General

Can you make a phone call and browse internet at the same time?

yes. while in the call, press "back" or "home" and you're free to continue using the phone as normal.

Someone's been watching AT&T commercials.

Yes you can.

As long as you have a 3G connection, you cant on edge so youd need to have the N1 on tmob as it can only do edge on ATT, they dont mention you cant do it if you dont have 3G in the commercials.

Which is pretty funny considering those AT&T commercials are in response to Verizon pointing out the fact that their 3G coverage is in so few areas.
Another thing to add, this will also work without 3G if you are connected to WiFi, and that goes for any Android phone, even on Verizon.

If Verizon wants to take a slap at someone, how about T-Mobile's less than steller (and slower) 3G in many of it's coverage areas.

T-Mo isn't a threat to Verizon. They're too small (for now...)

well, correct me on this. that "on a phone call while on the internet" works for GSM phones (ATT, T-Mo). Because Verizon (as claimed by ATT) and Spring (verified by my friend) can't get on the internet while being on a phone call, and they're CDMA. Of course, we're talking about non-Wifi connection. even my gf's carrier (MetroPCS, CDMA), can't go online.

How it works? [Activation / Unlocked]

Can anyone explain me about this activation needed in G1?
There are unlocked versions of G1 in ebay, what does that mean? You can only use the voice, no data?
Will there be an official no-activation-needed version or it will be tmobile's forever?
Thanks!
Unlocked only means it's SIM unlocked, meaning you can use the phone to make calls on other networks like AT&T.
The G1's 3G is NOT compatible with AT&T's 3G though.
The "activation" is simple entering a gmail account for the phone for it to be able to use and go to the home screen.

Can I activate my unlocked g1 without tmo sim card?
so "activation" is basically linking the phone to a google account, so you can sync email, calendar, data, etc?
Its lame use G1 without activating?
if the cellphone is unlocked you can use 3G without activating? Its 2100mhz, right?
who told you the g1 wont work on at&t's 3g? they lied. dont spread bad info. The g1 works fine on at&t's 3g.
The G1 uses 1700/2100, AT&T's is only 2100, not compatible.

First off where are you located? Where is the phone located?
In the USA you can not use it on at&t 3g network. If the phone is in europe or Asia, you will be able to use 3g with a at&t sim in it.
It all depends where the phone is at the time of usage.

sigh. The phone is capable of hitting the ATT frequencies. Yes, ATT uses a different set than TMo, but no big deal.

On the paper yes it is, I agree with you, g1 hardware capable of doing it. But does anybody here ever try it at this current time? you know sometimes on the paper is not exactly the same when you actually try by urself, it could renders att card cant be use because of app issue and so on

Good job you have proven that the G1 will work on AT&T out of country. The facts are checked, i have verified this with this and other forums as well as reputable T-Mo employees. The fact is other countries use a variety of frequencies and the G1 will most likely work on a lot of them.

Data roaming on G1, AT&T

I have an ADP1 on AT&T. If i enable data roaming, can T-Mobile charge me for using their network?
I heard that the G1 may connect to T-Mobiles exclusive band (be it 3G or whatever) and hence T-Mobile may bill AT&T who will bill me. Is this possible/has this happened to anyone?
Is it wise in this case to enable data roaming?
Data Roaming is only allowed if ATT and T-Mobile have a contract to share networks. I doubt they do since usually you only do that if you don't have service in that area. And usually it goes both ways.

Yes, I get 3G all the time
Oh snap.. You probably connected to T-Mobile's 3G...
bull****.
i have att and a adp phone. live in a tmo 3g area...get nothing.
Easiest way to figure it out is going to be contact AT&T but from the last I heard none of the carriers charge roaming fees because none of the carriers use roaming. Now I know some areas they might but for the most part they don't share networks anymore.
liar..... prove it with pics
I recommend EVERYONE turn of Data roaming on their phones.
It's mega expensive,, and IMO the phone should default to data roaming off.
I ended up with an extra $2k in charges for 10 days up in Canada.

He's probably connecting to some poor guys unsecure wifi network.
However this guy is saying that he can connect but it's fairly inconsistant:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=490696
Not sure about that guy's 3G claims. I'm on ATT. I have the normal unlimited data and text plan. According to the service rep (I called) roaming in the US is free. In the contract there's some stipulations as to how much they will allow you to roam, data and voice. It's some percentage of your usage. When I'm in San Diego, I roam on TMO 3G sometimes, and I've never been charged extra. I wish there was a way to force roam. Of course the phone companies still have roaming agreements. ATT phones will ONLY roam on TMO (and vice versa). They're the only GSM providers in the US.

WHY NOT!?

Okay so i'm in an area where T-mobile only has edge coverage and I'm hating my life right now without 3G, but AT&T has 3G coverage here, so why won't it let me roam on to the faster network? I can pull it up under network services but it just won't let me actually roam on to the network. Is this an issue of the phone simply not having the VPN's and such? Cuz if T-mobile won't charge me for roaming I damn well wanna use it! I'm using Cyanogen's Mod and the Hero 1.3.5 theme. All I want for my birthday is 3G!!!
They use different frequency's for the 3G signal.. thats why unlocked G1's can't use att 3g even if they have a AT&T sim
Hmm... seems strange the G1 would still be able to see the network being that it's using a different signal. Is there any way around this? Cuz they just stationed me in Quantico, VA for the rest of the summer and I'm ready to shoot myself on this Edge crap! And sadly 2 months is just too short of a time to actually get internet installed lol
hum.. I doubt it will help any but thier are som VPN settings floating around the board here that haykuro made. most ROMS come with it, I doubt it'll help though.
if that doesn't help take 2 Motrin and drink plenty of water. /end navy joke
Haha, yeah I'm a corpsman, we're working down here at the Marine Corps officer candidate school, so my mantra has been "Take Motrin, hydrate, and change your socks." These past couple weeks. Yet they somehow still mess those things up lol.

Im sorry to say but you cant use 3G on AT&T. Tmobile didnt want to wait for any bands in the 1700mhz or 1900mhz band to become available, so there 3G runs in the 2100/1700mhz band and that is the only band the G1 can use to get 3G. You can see AT&T service but that is voice, not 3G. AT&T 3G runs over the 1700/1900mhz band. here is a artical about this.

You must be barely outside of their coverage area. The map shows 3g coverage on both sides of where you are. The schedule that is floating around says they are supposed to expand coverage to Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Richmond, and Virginia Beach this summer so you might get lucky and get it before you leave.
Quantico's huge, T-Mobile has no 3G service there, and WiFi is out as NMCI doesn't permit wireless APs.
You're stuck with EDGE on T-Mobile, or EDGE on AT&T if you roam, but you won't get a speed increase if you use it, just a roaming charge. The problem is the frequency, as others have mentioned. AT&T uses 850/1900 where as T-Mobile uses 1700/2100. There's no known way (yet *crosses fingers) to use a T-Mobile G1 with AT&T's 3G service, so sadly, you're going to be stuck for 2 months out there with what you have.
I have my Dream working on AT&T's 3G service, and it works quite well, but it's not a G1. I specifically bought a Rogers Canadian HTC Dream (which is band-compatible with AT&T) for this purpose. So if you're *that* desperate for 3G service, you could spring for a Rogers Dream or Magic phone, but they aren't cheap. Additionally, they don't run custom ROMs yet (we just got root on the Rogers Dream this morning, and the Rogers Magic was only last week). So... There is no perfect solution for you yet if you want 3G and root. I've been living on my ADP1 with EDGE for 5 months now, and it isn't *that* bad, I guess.
On the more "bleeding edge" frontier, there's speculation that if one were to flash the Rogers dream radio to the T-Mobile G1, that it would do 3G on AT&T instead of T-Mo, but nobody's been able to get it done yet. A few people say it's the same chipset, it'll work, a few others say it won't, but till somebody tries it, we'll never know for sure. Either way, it's not currently possible as we don't have a Rogers Dream radio image.
So, there's your options I'm afraid. And something else to consider - even though AT&T says they have 3G, check with somebody else who has their service to see if they're actually getting it first. Quantico is a huge base, and there's no cell towers on it to my knowledge. So it's possible that nobody is getting 3G signal there, on either network.

[Q] Is it possible to use data on the phone while on a voice call?

Long time AT&T customer probably switching to Sprint, been eyeing the Epic..
If I get a voice call, is it possible (if I'm using a BT headset or speakerphone) to fire up a web browser on it and use that while I'm in-call? To look things up, or whatever?
If it can't do that, are there any other Sprint phones that can (EVO, for example?)
Thanks!
if i remember right, you can use data and voice only when you are connected onto 4G and WIFI, but not 3G. i have not tested this out yet to confirm but i remember reading that somewhere if i read it right. i also came from att (iphone) and being able to use data (3G) and voice at the same time was a major plus. ill have to try it out though later on my epic.
Yes u can use data while on a call only if you are on WiFi or 4g. Tested and verified.

Well, drat. Thanks fellas. Not that I do that very often, but it does come in handy. I checked and EVO "suffers" from the same problem.
Again, thanks, that's handy to know.
Its a cdma limitation, not a device one. Both sprint and verizon have this issue.

Some might say it is a "limitation", however is it the reason why cdma networks do not suffer from dropped calls like gsm networks do.
For more information, you can check out this rather lengthy post about why cdma is better than gsm.
yeah, i experience the same thing. it's becoming pretty much a deal breaker for me, as often i am on the phone for an hour or more and am trying to look things up at the same time. no joy. plus the abysmal battery life has me glad that i am still in the 30 day window ?; i like the phone a lot otherwise. wish i could get it for ATT. i have never had problems with their service, and would love to be able to talk and surf at the same time.
On 3g only voice.
On 4g voice n data simultaneous

oh, sorry, lol im talking in general At&t's network
but once i went into roaming, and i had 3G lol
If AT&T removed EDGE off their network that would leave GSM, 3G, and HSPA+... Or isn't EDGE and upgraded GSM... So it would leave just 3G and HSPA+
they cant get rid off EDGE or GSM,
1) GSM is their network removing it would leave the option of CDMA
2) EDGE will be there as long as there is 3G available.
That's right, edge is just faster gprs. Both are part of the GSM type network.
You are probably just getting spotty service during the upgrade. Once they are done in your area you should be back to normal.

My question about the whole AT&T/T-Mobile deal is, I'm using a couple of T-Mobile HD2s unlocked on AT&T . When/If the deal goes through, will AT&T know I'm using T-Mobile HD2s and upgrade my data plan from the cheap medianet plan to the smartphone plan? My bill is going to skyrocket!

T-Mobile is still going to operate as a separate entity for a long while. So I don't think you need worry - I think the TMO HD2s will continue to work on EDGE with the AT&T network. The question is if they will share towers (meaning that your phone would have G3), but even then you would have to register your APN for the T-Mobile network, which won't work with an AT&T SIM Card.
