feels pretty good.
half of the case is made from metal. the other half is plastic.
it feels rock solid. the screen seems to have an oleophobic coating on it, because any fingerprints are kinda hard to see (theyre still there tho), and can be wiped off with just one wipe of a cloth.
The front of the phone all around the screen (the lighter looking frame) is metal, and wraps around all the sides and to the back of the phone (the back of this metal frame is where the engraving goes). The rest of the phone (bottom edge of the front, and much of the back of the phone) is a soft-touch plastic that feels really comfortable in your hand. Design was clearly carefully thought out to be solid and durable and comfortable at the same time.
Feels really good in your hand and pocket. It feels fragile and makes you scared to think what would happen if you drop it. Other than that it is built from quality material, and has an absolutely gorgeous screen.
that might not be the build quality talking but rather the amount of money you blew to get this thing in your hand lol
The build quality is EXCELLENT. With the Mytouch side by side, it makes the MT3G look like a kids toy...seriously.
Well worth the money . I've always been very paranoid with any of my Android phones and dropping them. The G1 not so much cause it was like a tank.

My initial impressions are that it's a bit clearer, but also tinnier than the MT3G/Magic.
that's the only draw back for me for all htc's phone! bad camera quality and speaker ... i think i will just keep the hd2 till the xperia x10 comes out.. it should have really good build quality
mine fell about 50 cm onto my hardwood floor. Nearly shat myself. Not a scratch, still in one piece, although I didn't see how it landed so don't know the exact circumstances
Feels somewhat fragile to me, but it could be because it's new and I don't want to drop it. lol.
There is a weird gap beneath the battery cover where you can actually see the SIM card through at some angles. The weird camera bulge on back it seems like it's dying to pick-up some scratches.
Doesn't seem to have the Olephobic screen of the Hero or 3GS. Seems very well constructed overall though.

I'm with you there. I've always loved the quality of SE products and I'm really wanted the X10, especially since it will have AT&T 3G and a much better camera. I've seen some demo shots from the camera and they look pretty amazing for a camera-phone.
I think it's a good idea to treat your phone with an invisibleSHIELD ..
I hate it on the Magic for six months now .

external speakers are typically going to be thin as is this one... for speaker phone use you do not want a thick or bassy sound or else people talking will start to sound muddled...
its really not bad though, ive been listening to pandora at about 60% and i didnt hear much whitenoise when i played a steady hi frequency sound (dog went ape**** though haha)
Have you felt the quality of Sony mp3 players lately?

Feels nice and well built. Maybe because I'm coming from BB Bold I'm worried that it might just fly off my hand or snap if I hold on to it too tightly.
sexiest phone i've ever seen, let alone owned
Feels comfortable and well built. But it is a little slippery, so I' I just ordered a Silicone Gel Phone Cover Case for extra grip & protection!

People complaining about "lightness" & "cheap feeling" of phone
I dont get it. Sure its incredibly light but it doesnt feel cheap at all. Very solid and the fact that its made mostly out of plastic. I love it...
I just wish the plastic had more grip, its too slippy as is. But I agree is does not feel cheap in any way.
Same here. This is my first touchscreen and it actually seems like it has a good heft to me. I think those who say it's "light" are used to phones that weigh considerably more so they're more apt to notice a difference.
I never thought the phone was looking cheap The gel case I got from tmo adds to the weight, and actually the phone benefits from it IMHO
I actually like the slickness. Slides in and out of my pocket with zero effort. But this phone in no way feels cheap.

If you get the Tmo case it actually is a really good case until more starts to show up on the market.
I agree with all the phone doesn't feel cheap to me and I love how light it is!!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. Its light, but not cheap light, it feels well built. Its made mostly of plastic, but I didn't expect anything else.the plastic seems durable to me when removing the battery cover. Hell, if it was made of metal like many people want I think it would be way too heavy.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Love the thinness and lightness but every time someone calls me, the phone makes a rattling sound when vibrate is turned on.
Even after removing the back cover, it still rattles.
Its only after i grab the phone that the rattling stops.
That definitely gives an impression that its cheaply built.
@psychedelic
If your Vibrant rattles, take it back. Mine doesn't do that at all.

long term durability and appearance
i got the vibrant to replace my hd2 cuz winmo just wasn't doing it for me.. its much lighter and it looks nice.. but when I look at it, I can't help but think what it will look like 6 months down the road. the i see the paint on the shiny metal band coming off, i see the plastic clips on the back cover breaking, i see the plastic cracking all around. I know a good case will hide this, but just as with any nice purchase, i want it looking as new as possible for as long as possible, and I just don't see that happening with this plastic phone.

Mine rattles even on a soft surface like a car seat so definitely something related to the phone. Anyone else have the same problem?
After using an N1 or just about any E-series (metal) Nokia, the Vibrant feels incredibly cheap. Heck, even the oldest iPhone makes it look cheap, except for the screen.
It's not as bad as the G1, but I knew about the build quality going in...as long as the hardware works I can deal with the sub-par packaging and finish.

There's nothing wrong with light, as long as it's built well. As a matter of fact, I prefer light. My N900 was heavy and bulky; the Vibrant is so much more pocketable.
A metal backplate without plastic over the antennas will cause us nothing but signal issues in weak areas. It would have to be like the iPhone but with an extra plastic cutout for the BT/WiFI/GPS antenna's that are at the top of the phone to the right.
Anyway I agree, I had a CLIQ that was all plastic before I got the Vibrant and it did feel extremely solid however I still have confidence in my Vibrant. It's just the lightness that throws people off coming from an HTC or Motorola brick.
I think the look and feel of the phone is great. It does not feel cheap or flimsy at all. I will take a sturdy light plastic phone over a heave metal phone any day.

Build quality of DVP ???

Hey...
I just want to know about the build quality. Is the chrome plastic? Or metal?
Is anything plastic?
Thanks.
I know the battery cover is plastic. Pretty sure the chrome sides will be too.

if the chrome sides are plastic...that may change my mind (paint could scratch off easy...) =.=.

common, I know someone of you got the phone.
I went to use one in the Microsoft store here in San Diego, and if I recall the sides seemed like actual metal. The phone feels very sturdy in the hand and I didn't question the build quality at any time.
Thanks for the answer.

Thanks, just what I wanted to know.
I am pretty sure that the sides are plastic. The back is also plastic and I am not to sure that I like that texture. Overall the slider is well built and seems like it will last for some time.
I am not really concerned about the build as it seems quite good. The back is flimsy but really it is not doing anything but covering the battery and the SIM. Not as structural as some phones back covers.

So you have the DVP and you think its plastic?
Well, if they were metal, that could explain why the phone weighs 6.74 oz.
I want it to be metal heh. makes it feel like a superior product.
The build quality could be better. The phone is plastic and some of the fit is less the perfect. It's not a Nokia E series or an HTC - but I think it will stand up.
That blows. Makes me think about just going to get the LG Optimus 7. That phone definitely has awesome build quality.

I'm still going to try one, at least. I'm looking forward to the speaker and the screen mainly. Red on the HD7 looks like Orange, lol.
Between the HTC HD7/Surround, Dell venue pro, and the Samsung focus, I would rate the screens as follows:
HTC: 5.0
Dell: 8.0
Samsung: 9.0
Both the Dell/Samsung are a little blurry or grainy up close but the picture quality/contrast is so much better then LCD.
Up close and with small text is the downside of SAMOLED and AMOLED screens with the PenTile matrix. My only gripe. When resolutions go up in the future. I will be curious as to how much better it will be.

Personally I'm very impressed with the build quality, even though it's all plastic, its all put together very well. All the seams line up PERFECTLY, there are no rough edges and no flexing. It looks and feels great.
For me the build quality is good. It does not feel very platic to me.
And I am very demanding on my phones, as you can see in other topics, I notice every little problem there is.
Yhe phone feels very sollid, everything is well pushed together, so no "air" between things... no looseness. It feels like one piece. Also no sounds if you push anywhere, no cracking.
I am very happy abouth the build quality, as I tought it would bother me.

I agree completely.
Super impressed. MUCH better than other plastic phones like the atrix.
As more people here, I am really a phone freak. First thing I look in the first few days is how well the phone is build. I look for everything that wouldnt be good about the build quality.
Well, it is thin like hell, its light... But, it feels well built. The back cover is scary thin when taken off, but it snaps on perfectly (in 10 places). No cracks, funny noises or stuff. Its built nicely.
The only thing is I treat it very carefully when not in my case. That off course also shows it feels high quality, thats why I dont want to break it.
Maybe a very little build quality problem, altough it is not really a problem.
But between the glass of the screen and the surrounding plastic there is a smalish gap where dirt or dust gets in(not under the screen tough(for now)). Since i have my phone i cleaned it with the edges of a piece of paper.

Consider it like this:-
Physically Samsung’s wafer-thin chassis is great in the pocket whereas its competitor HTC Sensation feels better in the hand. Tapering edges, a neatly curved display and high-quality metal and soft-touch plastic make for a device that feels more expensive than the Galaxy S II can manage.
It's a trade-off to give Samsung the edge in lightness and thinness. I have no problem with the thin plastic. I'm super careful with all my devices because I can resell them easier lol.
The phone's solid, but I treat it as if its fragile for some reason. Because its so light and thin, it always feels like it could fall out of my hand. Cases are starting to come out and I ordered a Case-Mate tough case. I know I'll be less paranoid about it once its protected.
And to the Aussie who cracked his screen... I've dropped other phones that have landed in ways that should have cracked their screens but for some reason they survived. I've done the same thing you did with an HD2 (which is also thin) by hitting it against something in a way a pressure point cracked the screen diagonally. No phone can protect you against every instance of screen breakage. I think thinner phones are more susceptible to pressure point cracks.

You also need to factor in that because the sensation uses metal for its casing, its also a lot heavier. This may or may not be what your looking for.
It really depends on the individual. In amazed on the good reviews here but honestly when I first opened the box my heart sank.
Coming from the hd2 and iphone 4. This felt like some cheap toy for my tenants sister to play with rather than cutting edge executive phone. Its plasticky but like all the comments above, it probably was designed this way to make it light.
Not my cup if tea but of the trade off.I've learned to live with it

Ergonomics (in-hand feel)

Please, no "that's what she said" jokes. Rate this thread to express how you think the Moto X4 feels in-hand. A higher rating indicates that it's comfortable to hold for long periods of time, even in one hand. Resist the urge to say "TWSS" just now. Seriously.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Moto has totally figured out ergonomics. Rounded corners and back. Feels nice and steady in the hand.
Agreed, although I wish it had the fingerprint sensor on the back like my Nexus 5X. Also the weight is both reassuring and a little annoying. Weight for weights sake.
The rounded corners are very comfortable, and the smooth shiney back is actually more grippy than I would have thought. Fingerprint reader on the front is a little weird, as I have to shift the phone's center weight in my hand to reach the sensor with my thumb, but it's not that bad. It definitely feels very "dense" meaning it's weight is very well spaced out thru the device and it feels good to hold. The only sharp edges are on the camera bump, which I'm a little nervous about damaging as it's so prominent (but I also worry about that with every phone, so that's not exactly unique to this model).
I love how it feels in the hand made me sad to put a case on it. The way this phone feels reminds of the iPhone 7 especially around the edges.
Sent from my moto x4 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I just bought this phone last night and all I can say is that the build quality and in-hand feel is amazing.
But to compare it with HTC 10 with similar body, it feels bulky since the back isn't tapered.
Only if Lenovo decided to put a flagship processor coz everything about this phone is already highend.
Mine is the 4gb/64gb dual sim variant.
i bought this phone just because of the ergonomics! i'm so in love right now! if there's anything were to happen to my moto x4 right now... i don't know what i would do to that person who did it haha! that's how much i'm obsessed right now!
Amazing phone. Dope design and look. However it is somewhat slippery and sliding. I'll have to put on a case, even if I do not want it. Eye catching device.
It’s a little too wide, especially after putting a case on. The width also exaggerates the weight of it. The shape is nice and comfortable. Just not ‘4.7” iPhone’ comfortable. I think 4.7-5” would’ve been good, and brought the weight down too. .
It has good ergonomics and the back isn't slippery (although the sides are). I also like the placement of the fingerprint sensor, as I unlock a lot the phone while it's laying on a desk (plus, One button nav ftw).
But the weight is too much on the heavy side for me. With case it becomes exhausting to hold for long periods. But it makes the phone feel more premium (which is not something I really care for).
It's also very very fragile. I wouldn't use it without a case.
Slippery slope. I always fear that it slips outta my hands, and it has glass body so....

Great. Thanks man, have a nice one
It is average. I have small, danty hands and prefer my work IPhone S as the perfect size - my thumb can reach everything. On the X4, there are times where I can't reach and either strain my hand or have to change holding positions.
One of the reasons I chose the X4 was because it was about the same size as my old, beloved S5. I do not intend to ever buy a larger one.
For what it's worth, the build quality is really impressive. I have a black x4 and everything about it screams a million bucks. Those with any knowledge of what a premium phone should look and feel like will appreciate this phone. Sturdy, beautiful and perfect for someone who's not into the whole big phones hype. Finger print sensor on the back would have been a bit better since the bottom bezel could then have potentially housed another speaker but one shouldn't be too greedy. Overall, this build quality beats anything in the updated price range that it's selling for now. Maybe something like the Nokia phones could come close but nothing else.
