Hey all. long time lurker, first time poster.
I received my nexus one a few days ago, and it has been a blast. However, after charging it last night ( the first time I charged it via wall charger as opposed to USB) I awoke to find it incredibly hot. I let it cool down, but ever since, the vibration has not worked.
I briefly was able to get the vibration on by taking out the battery and leaving phone and battery by the cold window. It vibrated normally on startup, and briefly in the os before turning off. Since, I have had no luck.
Any suggestions? I could, of course, send it off to get repaired under warranty, but i'd rather see what I can do first. I am currently attempting to drain the battery completely and see what that might do. I'm shooting in the dark, I know, but I'd rather try to figure it out as much as I can.
Thanks!
try a factory reset (Settings>about phone), if that doesnt work its hardware problem so send it in.
Weird, i havent had any problems with mine getting hot. Vibration doesnt work on anything? Keyboard, calls, etc. and youre sure you went into settings and enabled it on those?
settings/sound and display.
Enable haptic feedback.
if the phone is in silent mode this option will be grayed out.
I hope it is as simple as that and that it is not damaged from charging.
I'm having vibration problems too, but I don't think it's due to charging, but to me it seems like the vibration is going out. I was using the haptic feedback for the vk, and now it doesn't work half the time, and when it does, it is not very noticeable.
but the bigger vibrations still work, so I'm clueless on it

I know in better keyboard you can change how long the vibration lasts for, Im using smart keyboard right now and I can definitely feel the press of the keys.

This problem happened on a swap I tried (my screen has dust under it) and I called HTC and said I was sending the swap back because of this and they said it was fine. Give HTC a call, I think its a hardware problem
Thats how mine was, it was charging and got really hot, now when i get text messages it doesnt vibarate but if i get a phone call it does.
a couple of times, when i charged overnight, the phone gets hot. i think if it has a "running" app, it does this.

It's completely normal for the phone to get "hot" when charging or running apps with heavy power utilization... basically anything demands a decent amount of power.
However, it shouldn't get so hot that it's uncomfortable to hold or that parts start failing... that would indicate a defect with the phone and would necessitate an exchange through HTC.

Yes, in fact all notification vibrations fail now (GTalk / GMail Vibration notifications fail). This happened to me just today. Sigh.
Update: Notice I said all notification vibrations. It's specifically notification vibrations. All other types of vibrations such as haptic feedback and phone calls work fine. Only vibrations that pertain to the notifications / notification bar do not happen anymore. I don't think this is a hardware issue. This happened just recently. Could it be due to the new (OTA) update? Something broken?
i can't get mine to vibrate when a text comes in, no matter what settings i use. it will vibrate when a call comes in. i text a lot, so that would be really handy to have it work (like it should) when i'm out and it's too busy/loud to hear the phone but, not sure if i want to send it back because of this...
That's crazy I've never had a phone that vibrates stronger.
I've updated my post above. It's not about the vibration of the phone but just on the notification vibrations. Somehow it just stopped all of a sudden.
Looks like this person might've had the same problem:

(I can't post links since I'm a new user)
Shall try a hard reset and see how that goes then. Rather reluctant to try it but here goes..
Update: Nope. Still no vibration for notifications after doing Hard Reset (using "Clear Storage"). I have even tested this using the API Demos app from the Market. Under App -> Notification -> Status Bar -> Vibrate button there is no vibration to be felt.

use the search function, lol. if you are having problems with notification vibration, download the 'sound manager' app from the market. start it up. press menu > vibrate settings. set it up how you want. fixes the issue.
I searched, but I kept searching for the "vibration" keyword. That thread only shows when you search "vibrate" .. or "notification vibrate". My phone is with HTC now. I don't understand why a Hard Reset doesn't resolve the issue...
fixed

I can confim this trick works... DL sound manager from the market then activate " vibrate whenever possible" in vibration menu...
it fixed the problem i had : no vibrations only on notifications ..
never had such a fast phone, thanks to google, timothydonohue, cyanogen and all modders...!!!

This afternoon, I was getting text messages when I noticed that my phone had stopped vibrating, despite being set to vibrate and ring.
The only app I have installed to manipulate the vibrating function is SMS Popup. When I went in to that to test vibrate patterns, it still wasn't working.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Is there some setting I could have accidently hit to stop vibrate?
I have no idea how that would happen, though, so I'm just hoping it's not hardware.
Cheers
Same here...am using chompsms

Any ideas anybody? The vibrated last night during a call, so I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware problem
Figured it out.
"GOT IT!!
as per another thread, download Sound Manager
In the vibrate settings, theres an option to "never vibrate"
Changed it to "Always" and voila system vibrates again!
Must be an option DEEP in android that normal settings dont cover.
Good news is it works at least!"

I turned off all vibration or feedback and yet my phone vibrates when I get incoming calls. I unchecked all the boxes trust me and it still vibrates? Is it just me or does anyone else get this? I simply don't want it to vibrate when i get incoming calls!!!
Any suggestions!

Is the profile on vibrate? Try Menu > Settings > Sounds > Vibrate in General.
nope! it's on Normal with vibrate unchecked
Had the same issue and found this on Androidworld:
Try this:
Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications
Find the keyboard software you are using (for example "Android-Keyboard"), press "delete cache" and "delete data". This removes al personal settings of the keyboard.
After that I rebooted and vibration was turned off. Hopes it works!
Does this also remove all dictionary entries?

On a side note, I think I get times where the phone occasionally vibrates for no good reason - no apparent notification, no apparent change or anything.

Good, at times I thought it was me going mad but I'm 100% sure it does this occasionally - but it could be absolutely anything, so I didn't even bother trying to find the cause.
I'm getting the same. 1 short followed by 3 short "pulses". The phone was in silent-mode (no vibrate), and I didn't get any calls og messages at the time.
The past few weeks I've been noticing that my DHD often vibrates at random times, when it should not do this at all.
It just vibrates (in stby mode), nothing else but I always think I'm getting a call or a text, which is pretty annoying.
Sometimes it vibrates just once, but also sometimes it vibrates 3 times, very fast and hard. Last night it even woke me up...
Anyone having the same issue?

Had this today when I bought it out of standby. Thought I had a text or email or something but there was nothing. Never noticed it happen when in standby though.
This happens regularly on mine too! its frustrating! you think you have a call or a message but you dont! :s
Its probably caused by your signal going from hspa (3.5g) to 3g to gprs

Isn't this called Blackberry syndrome? Imagining your phone vibrating, just so you can check it!
Seriously though, I dont have this on my DHD. It was present on my Hero though. I think its your phone getting lonely because your not using it.
If you press the volume rocker right in the middle it will vibrate 1 time and sometimes it will do 2 quick vibrates following the first one. This is probably not related to your case but it fits under the random vibration for other that might not know about it.
I noted you get a vibration when you signal goes out, and when it comes back again.
it does happen on mine too...
but i think i know the cause... its usually after using the volume buttons when it does it
but after installing CM, it doesnt do it anymore... i think its something to do with stock ROMS (mainly sense)
+1 more for that, i thought i was going mad when i first noticed it, but after reading this im feeling a bit more sane,
stock rom btw
Mine does it too. I'm using Custom Modaco Rom. When I go to unlock the phone it vibrated but not all the time. Never in my pocket though. I thought it was 3g watchdog playing up but other people getting it too so not that. It did it just now reading these posts hope it doesn't get worse.

Mine does it too. Got used to it now though.
Mine does this, but I know when it does it and why.
Usually it's either when unlocking the phone, or pressing the power button to lock it.
The reason why? It's because I have fat hands and accidentally press the volume down button when using the phone, causing it to go into vibration mode (which makes the phone vibrate once to let you know).
It's confusing, but entirely my own fault.
That's kinda diffirent from what I'm having. Mine does this without going into vibration mode or anything elsr for that matter. It just vibrates, even when locked and when the screen's off...
Just noticed that it does indeed have something to do with the volume buttons. Just lock your phone, press down both of the volume buttons, unlock it and then you will feel the 3 vibrations
I've noticed mine vibrates when launcher pro crashes, happens while i'm listening to music and try changing the volume sometimes, every time it happens the next time i unlock the phone launcher pro has to restart.
Although I have noticed it some times vibrates when I try to lock or unlock the phone and accidentally hit the volume buttons, not sure what happens there though.
EDIT: Just been trying to lock and hold one of the volume buttons, I've noticed it locks up for a second or two, so it's most likely something crashing I think.
Really sorry to bump a thead from a few weeks ago - but has anybody had any luck with resolving this?
This is the only thread I could find on the matter, and it's becoming a big annoyance for me. It's NOT when I go into vibration mode or anything, it can be anytime - even when the screen is off.

I just tried this and you're right - the three vibrations. Perhaps it's by design but I can't see why.
Anyway it's nice to know how to do it on purpose; mind you I used to get it all the time with my old cheap case, with my new case it's never done it "by itself". It seemed a bit odd but I assumed the case was "pressing" both volume buttons when on standby from time to time (makes sense).
I've noticed when i'm putting the phone in my pocket (or out), i tend to grab it on the top with the volume buttons. And yes, it does vibrate when i accidentally press them.
Try it yourself.
Regards, clumsy long fingered dude.
Mine used to do this as well. It would be sitting on the desk not touching anything, screen off and it's just idling doing nothing on stock sense rom, then it would just vibrate randomly a few times. It was a bit spooky and it kept doing it randomly :/
It has since stopped doing that, no real reason I can see why, I have flashed LeeDroid but it stopped randomly vibrating before that.
I'm on AR HD and it's still doing it.
I'm not too bothered, but a fix would be nice.
If I keep randomly pressing buttons on the phone, it will make random vibrations. Sometimes one, two or three. I don't have to press the power button, the phone screen can be turned off, and the phone doesn't go into silent/vibration mode either.
I just played about with the volume buttons now and I got a bit of lag on my phone, lasted for about 15 seconds then went away...
My phone will vibrate in my hand/pocket as if it is receiving a notification but nothing comes in. I go and check all the apps but nothing. It's always a quick double vibration. Is there a way to see which so is causing it? I have had Wakelock installed for awhile but am not sure what to look for.
So it appears that the phone is switching to vibrate on its own. I have no apps that are setup to change the volume nor do I have quite hours. Any suggestions?
Is anyone else having their phone do a random vibrate like a notification came in, but you don't see anything showing up as coming in to have it do that?
Advanced Features->Smart Alert is causing it. It will vibrate upon pickup detection if you have a missed call or unread message.
I've been experiencing the same problem on my S8+ and it's driving me crazy. Notification reminder, smart alert and all these other features are off. Really don't know what to do, I'm guess it's a hardware issue.

Hmm, ok. I just turned it Off. It was happening while the phone was already in my hand and I'd be doing other stuff. No calls or msgs were coming in when it happened though. Will see if this stops it.
Settings -> Accessibility -> Notification Reminder -> Turn Off
Hope that works. If not I remember back in my S6 days there was a menu in accessibility also for one of the categories where it had heptic feedback for sounds and everytime there was movement or sound it would vibrate. I cant find it though

Same here, I doubt that it's related to notification reminder. I had it turned off since I bought the phone.
If there is nothing happening (messages coming etc.) I think the vibration might come from the false haptic feedback in home button. Mine does it quite regularly and it is starting to drive me crazy. I hope it is software issue as the DOA isn't available anymore and I don't want to give it for the repair just yet.
My Phone also vibrates when my finger is near the fingerprint sensor and cant read it

Is your bluetooth connected to anything? Once your phone's bluetooth disconnects from the other device, the phone vibrates
I have the same issue. It makes me crazy ! Samsung - any ideas?
Same here. I'm going nuts if nobody knows a solution.
That's since S4 days, people.
Mine does it too while I'm holding it. No notification on the status bar. It will just vibrate by itself.
My S4 never did that and that doesn't mean we should be fine with it.
It happens to me with the home button, the vibration isnt reliable and it sometimes vibrated 3 times.

It is the Edge Panel. I had to turn off the Edge Panel to stop the vibration. Or you can go to settings and turn off the vibration for activating the Edge Panel. What happens is when you hold your phone, your palms sometimes activate the edge panel.
Since we are at it , while am driving and having the phone between my legs it turns on by itself. no vibration or anything. Anyone with similar issues?
P.S No notifications whatsoever. System or Internet based.
