New Line? - Nexus One General

I know this probably seems like a stupid question, but where's the enter button?
When typing in certain applications like sms for instance, the "enter button" is replaced with the "smiley button".
I always separate my texts with new lines but I can't seem to find the button.

I'm also curious about this. I'd like to find a way to make the keyboard never display the smiley button, and always display the enter button. I'd also like to find a way to make it always display a row of number keys at the top, even if it means making the letter keys smaller . . .

Yeah I'd like to get rid of the google voice button for the comma. I think google forgot we don't have an alternative hardware keyboard when they made the keyboard =P
There are some major flaws with such common features, like no battery percentage indicator. iPhone 1, N1 nill, i'm afraid; and I hate the iPhone with a passion. (slow, no network reception, overly-simplified)
hmm, perhaps there are other keyboard alternatives, but I think most if not all do not yet support the the N1 resolution...

Thanks, that helps.
I'd still like an enter button though
I'd also like to turn off the auto-space without turning off the other options in that settings bundle, like auto-input etc.

Modded ROM vs. standard ROM keyboard lag difference?

Hi. I have been running a couple of modded ROMs and the htc_ime i install on those ROMs is always laggy and somewhat buggy. Is it the same with standard ROM?
One of the bugs i have noticed is that sometimes, when i press space it just goes nuts and creates a period(dot) and just continues to make spaces for a short period. And this has happened on several ROMs.
It's the HTC_IME, not the ROM. the HTC keyboard is designed to put a period and two spaces when / if you hold the keyboard for too long. I haven't looked at the actual code to see how many milliseconds it is, but that is what is happening. Try to tap the space bar quicker and it should be fine.
Thanks for your reply, but thats not whats happening. I press space fast enough. I am aware of the fact that it puts out a dot if you hold it or tap it twice . It does not explain why it continues to make spaces after it makes the dot. It goes totally bananas
Its a setting.
I have a custom rom but im almost certain that the setting is a standard feature.
Its called "Add a space after dot" or equal and you should find it in the settings for input and text.
Good luck.

I also know this is considered a feature, and I intentionally have it on. HOWEVER, there is often keyboard lag, where you can quickly tap on a key, and the software does not recognize that it was a quick tap and processes it as if you held it down for a longer period. With the space bar, you get the period + spaces. I frequently get the same effect on other keys, yielding numbers, etc instead what I wanted.
The keyboard lag is *awful* and I consider it one of the bigger usability flaws in the mytouch.

Yeah i get that exact same thing. It is REALLY annoying the !#¤% out of me
Try using Super D, I get no lag on the key board and its a great 1.6 ROM. Its possible it could be a hardware issue, try going into the dev tools and click pointer location. See whats going on with your touch screen.

I am using Super D at the moment . Turning the vibration feedback off helped somewhat, but in landscape mode it is still lagging a lot. Tried pointer location, and the screen seems fine to me
FYI, I switched off the predictive text input option on HTC_IME, which got rid of just about all of the lag. It works very well with haptic feedback now. Unfortunately, there's no spell check or anything, so you may have to pay more attention but it is still preferable I think.
The basic problem seems to be that the mytouch simply doesn't have the processing capability to run close to smoothly with all the advertised features, and we have to selectively disable options to try to get a usable product. It's a shame since android itself is quite nice.
I suppose another solution would be to go into the source for one of the keyboard packages and see if it could be made more efficient, but that may be pointless as soon as better hardware comes out.

home screen for phone app?

since there is no phone/talk button, like on the g1, will we have to go to the home screen to use the dialer? Or is there another way?
i remember seeing a tiny app that puts a shortcut to the dialer in the notification bar, can't remember the name though ...
EDIT: try "bar control"
All seven of the home screens have a phone button at the bottom, so you're never more than two button presses from the phone. That said, I know it's possible to reassign a long press of the search button in Android, so it may be possible to map that to the dialer but I don't know for sure.
I guess it's not that big of a deal, once you get used to it, but I'm just so used to my mt3g.
It' gonna take awhile
I'll have to get used to it too. I've owned many Treos and WM phones, all of which had hardware send and end buttons. It's a first for me, but it's just one extra key press so it shouldn't be too bad. The bigger change for me is that this will be my first smartphone without a hardware QWERTY keyboard.
Also, I found this app which also adds phone and/or contacts to the notification bar: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.application.dialeratbar2

What is Samsung thinking regarding Vibrant

Love the Vibrant BUT.... The On-Off button is on the right so that when you grab the phone to turn it on or off with your thumb (right handed), your fingers alter the volume buttons on the other side!!! Just because other manufacturers (HTC) have buttons on the top doesn't mean you HAVE to be different (Yes you SAMSUNG)
Also the system buttons on the bottom are FAR too sensitive. Other manufacturers stop using touch buttons because of this years ago.
Also Samsungs android overlay offers no user benefits whatsoever. They could have just offered a new set of widgets and apps with Vanilla android.
BUT NO.... They have to be different .. guess what? All business plans have changed these last couple of years. You do NOT have to be different just for the sake of standing out. I think the Dell Streak is gonna suffer because they are using a propietry charger (Throw all you other ones away and buy Dell's for 30 bucks each!!!!!) I was gonna buy one but now i'm not gonna touch it and support propiatism (made up word).
Calling all cellphone designers.... Please may I be a beta tester for you. I will tell you the truth and give you more feedback (as a heavy user) than any research company.... (Android phones only)
The truth may hurt but you need to hear it.
I can control my fingers individually so that when I grip the phone to hit the power button, I can avoid squeezing the other side of the phone.
Having the button on the side is far better than having it at the top. HTC Evo's tiny button and placement has to be a complete oversight by HTC.
Samsung's TouchWiz 3.0 is pretty nice.
Just because you don't like the Touchwiz interface doesn't mean other people don't like it aswell. I actually enjoy having the default Touchwiz, but I wouldn't mind if it were stock android at all.
just a complainer...IGNORE!
I actually prefer the button on the side. If I use my right hand I can use my thumb and if I use my left hand I can use my index finger
I'm an advanced user

You are in no way representative of the user base.
The only complaint I have about the physical design of the phone is, why did they put the antenna at the bottom of the phone? It's easily covered by the hand, which is proven to cause signal degradation.
The antenna is at the bottom of the phone because it is mandated that it be placed at the bottom to move radiation away from your brain.
Still, that's not the issue. Many phones have their radios placed there, and do not suffer from the same reception issues the Vibrant appears to be experiencing.
Not all phones are created equal.
Even though the antenna is on the bottom of the phone, and bars are going down.. it doesn't really affect the speeds or drop your calls. Not sure whats up with that but I don't really care if the bars go down as long as nothing else is affected.
And TouchWiz can be replaced with alternative launchers available on the market. Everything will be great when ROMs will be created for this phone, which shouldn't be too far away considering how easy it was to root.

1. The power button
Personally I use a case on mine and I don't have any issues with accidentally pushing the power button. I also happen to like it on the right side now that I've used the phone for a litte while. It makes unlocking/turning on the screen much easier than if the button was on top.
2. Touchwiz
Some people like it, some people don't. For the most part, the only thing people are whining about is the application launcher which looks too much like the iPhone. The solution? Use Launcherpro, ADW.Launcher or whatever home replacement you like. You have options!
As for the other nicities of Touchwiz. I happen to like having easy access to the radios from the notification bar. I also like being able to adjust screen brightness by simply sliding my finger on the notification bar. Genius! I also like how you can slide to text or call on the contacts page. The unlock screen and the integration of the default music player is very nice into the lock screen is very nice. I also like the puzzle pieces that appear for missed calls, texts, emails.
In short, I like everything about touchwiz except the launcher which I replaced with Launcher Pro. I'd rather have this setup than if it came with SenseUI. This is my opinion of course, but I think Samsung did a pretty good job.
You can always get 3rd party apps for widgets and the launcher. You can't really replicate the other features I mentioned from what I've seen.
3. The buttons
Other manufacturers stopped using touch buttons? Really?
The Evo 4G, Nexus One, Droid Incredible all use capacitative buttons as well. I wouldn't mind a physical home button.
To each his own. Enjoy the phone or get something else. You have options!
PS: Just remember even though you have options, no other phone will have the Super AMOLED screen.
Now that I've been using the phone a while, here are the things I've found to be the biggest annoyances (in order of how much it bothers me):
1. The e-mail app can't display HTML mail. Also, it has problems making complicated URLs, ones with & or = in them, clickable links. Finally, it doesn't appear to have any copy & paste funcionality.
2. Can't change the default calendar for new appointments.
3. The Facebook calendar sync adds my Facebook calendar items to my Exchange calendar. This isn't great, but what's worse is that it adds the items multiple times, once for each sync, and also puts them at the wrong times, always Pacific Time instead of Eastern Time.
4. The Voicemail number is locked to T-Mobile's designated number. I would like to change it to my Google Voice number so that I can use the speed dial "1" or voicemail tab in the dialer. This is more fore my wife than me, but since she annoys me about it, it in essence annoys me.
5. Battery life... I use my phone heavily, so this is too be expected, but I wish there was an extended battery available.
6. Volume... The max call volume is too low. It's okay most of the time, but if I'm in a noisy area, I have a hard time hearing it. Also, the max volume throught the headphones is too low.

There are those few instances when no trackball is not an option.

Yes, there are always gonna be a run around but take this situation for instance. When I go to my video player [stock vibrant] the only way I can delete the video from there is if I somehow have my selection over the video I want to delete. Which is not possible without clicking it to open it without a trackball, or pad.
Also, when I want to read the whole name of certain apps in the market, with a trackball, i could move my seletion over it to auto scroll the name but without a trackball, i can't do that.
Is this something we are going to have to live with or will there ever be a program where we can have some sort of a mouse control program, on the desktop that acts as a trackpad.
I feel your pain, but you can delete files in movie player without a d-pad. Hit the menu button and select delete file. Select boxes will appear. You can then select one or multiple files to delete. I do miss the trackball though.
how about on the terminal when you want to repeat a command??
I hate it when I am in Remote desktop and I want to move around.. the trackball was a perfect mouse..
Also, when you want to change one letter when you are typing, I used the N1 trackball all the time to go back a few letters, now it is easier to just delete until the errro and retype the word...

haha i know the feeling "_"
Don't forget that you can swype from the swype tip button to the "sym"button to get directional arrows. I also miss the trackball, but doing this makes it more tolerable.
Hope this helps some of you.
What kills me is this ridiculous inconsistency between various implementations of THE SAME PHONE! All these Galaxy S phones are essentially the same hardware, and while the original "reference" implementation had it all, we're getting all these ridiculous omissions on the various carriers. WTF was wrong with the trackpad on the original S?

Sure it did, you just needed a decent shell. You were using the stock "sh". If you had used "ash" or "bash", you would have gotten command history.
Does anyone know of a way to enter a control character in Swype? I downloaded "Full Keyboard" from the Market so that I can be able to hit control-c in Terminal, but switching IME's back and forth is becoming a true PITA, and I wonder if I am missing some obvious workaround to do this.

Horrible Keyboard On 2.1, Any way To Put Keyboard From 1.6?

A few hours ago I updated to the 2.1.
The main thing that is far worse is the keyboard. It seems far less accurate, I'm making many more mistakes than before, sometimes I have to press the same button twice, it seem's unresponsive and slow, if you rush it you make mistakes.
It's like it's running slow and there is no num pad, the keyboard is much worse than 1.6
Is there ANY way I can use the old keyboard? I wish there was a way I could use the previous full sized keyboard, quicker and more responsive...
Matter of fact, what does everyone think the best keyboard for the streak is?
Not sure if I am doing something wrong , but I have been unable to use any other keyboards , they install OK , and I can select them , but when I go to select it , it's still the Dell one that pops up . I used Better Keyboard on 1.6 and preferred it.
With the new one , I seem to "miss" the top row of keys for some strange reason ! , usually I'll notice I have missed an "e" in a word .
Same, at first kept missing the top row of keys, you just need to hit a little bit lower.
Or use a multitouch keyboard like smart keyboard, just annoying that it takes up the whole screen.
I'm using the SWYPE keyboard. Works great for me on 1.6

I haven't upgraded to 2.1 yet as i rather wait for the official OTA, I am also using swype keyboard I find it quite good too. I also found a stock one a bit difficult to type on with out making typo's but it was nice idea having the number pad. But I heard many people were crying about it being rubbish.
Funny now seeing people who have upgraded to 2.1 and with the new dell stock keyboard people are also making noise about how poor it is. Looks like dell can't get the keyboard right. I think dell should left the original keyboard and pre-install swype for people. This give users best of both worlds I think.
The original keyboard was rubbish, agreat idea but impossible to type accurately. The new keyboard is better but still not great. Swype is be rest so far even as a touch type.
Ps to get keyboards to work (ie instead of the default), first enable it in the settings then hold you finger in any typing box until the options appear then choose input, then chose desired keyboard.

Its a good idea that and swype would be handy yet i prefer the 1.6 keyboard my only issue is that it isnt multi touch. Which cause me to make errors so for the time being its swype maybe not as fast but hey its effortless.
I use SLIDE IT has more features than SWYPE
Just to balance the argument a bit - I much prefer the 2.1 keyboard to the 1.6 version.
I have big fingers and my accuracy has improved enormously -I haven't even bothered re installing swype.
So i guess it is all down to personal preference.
I prefer the old one....just cause it had the FN key shown and also the arrows that are useful when i want to go back in typing.
I also agree with those who tell that the new one is not accuracy like in 1.6, i noticed that when i type delete it often type "L" letter. For this i would like to ask if the re-calibration may work....

The new keyboard is just terrible. Nearly eVERY word I type theres a mistake and it's slow and cannot keep up with the original.
I also noticed the keyboard is TOO LOW and that is why I'm making mistakes, the old keyboard was higher and in line with the fingers, therefore easier and I miss the NUMPAD!!!
