I want to rip, convert and transfer dvds to my HD2 but cant find any free software to do this. I keep downloading software that only offers a trial versions with a watermark or 3 minute limit. Can anybody recommend anything?
I can't vouch for it, but a quick google turned this up...
http://www.freewarezoom.com/archives/free-dvd-ripper
It looks quite good.
I use Nero, but that's obviously not free, or I'd highly recommend it.
magic dvd ripper...
It is only a trial version, but you get 5 free full rips with no watermarks or anything, all full functions.
Handbrake works for me. It's free.
Google DVD Help and DVD Shrink (Free). The DVD Help website has a lot of tutorials and tools you can use. This is the website;
http://www.videohelp.com/
Tried so many...I keep coming back to mediacoder. It's free, it does everything and anything. As said above, Handbrake is great too.

thx for the recommendations, I'll give these a go.

hi guys,
im looking for something to compress some home/family movie clips to my phone. they are about 3gb each and i would really like to get them down to as small as possible say 100mb-500mb or whatever is possible.
been searching the web and cant really find anything. the best i found was to convert to divx
any help please
you could use something like an ipod converter so it will majorly cut it down in size (though it may be the wrong resolution and look crap), or try dvd2avi and specifically set the resolution u want it to
cool mate thank you very much trying it now
personally i use Gordian Knot.
It is a program that uses a combination of smaller products (hence the name Knot) (like DVD-ripper, Virtual Dub, Vobsub etc) in order to rip a dvd.
You can use it for ripping dvds as well as modifying a movie. You can select the resolution yourself, a long with a lot of features.
I have to say that this is a bit advanced and you will get lost if you dont do your homework...There is a tutorial (google is your friend ) and once you do that you should be set to go..
Just a note, when i started using it, progress was slow but now i can do everything quite fast..
If you have the time, patience and good quality movies, you cant go wrong with this
ps: i make xvid format films with it, but divx is also supported

and nobody uses this anymore because there are 1click solutions that do it better and faster... this is a tool that is 5000 years old
To convert from dvd, xvid, divx, ... to an avi/wmv that fits on your htc, without tutorials, without advanced nonsense go for SPB mobile DVD
you can even tell the converter to not exceed a certain filesize, so I guess this fits yours needs perfectly
I have found iSoft DVD to PPC converter to be the best I have come across so far. I have been looking at this type of software since I bought a 4GB Sony Ericsson about 3 years ago approx. I have used the iSoft about 11 times already to convert the 11 DVD's I currently have on my 16GB Touch Pro
i like clonedvdmobile or spb mobile dvd
otherwise there are plenty of movie convertors which will convert/downsize movies
I just got an Advantage x7510, and am absolutely thrilled to bits with it - beautiful screen, something you can do something with, like the Psions of old!!!
I would like to watch some DVD's on it, but being completely new to ripping etc. don't know what format to rip to, what size and so on. I tried to rip a 30 minute DVD to .wmv, but was appalled at the slowness thru the native Windows Media app. Someone suggested I get Coreplayer, which is better, but I think I need a steer on how to do the ripping for the best. What would show best, with best lip-sync and fewest dropped frames, and acceptable quality?
Can someone point me in the right direction? Your help would be much appreciated.
thanks

AVI is the best with Smart Movie
I tested almost media softwares for video in my X7501, and i found sth here.
BAD video players:
- Core player
- Windows media player (worst)
- TCPMP
And all of them got the same issue: flash screen and not smooth.
Then I try Smart Movie, WOW, i can watch movie in my X7501 as a champ.
And u only need software to convert to AVI file
DOESN't MAtter what size of the frame and file, it works perfectly.
( I watch Jackie Chan movie with the file is about 400mb, nothing wrong, so nice)
enjoy
thanks for the suggestion vqscorpions, I have just downloaded a trial.
One point straightaway is that I don't like the look of their licensing - it seems to be one licence per device, whereas I use several devices, not of course simultaneously, and like to load my software on to all of them, to use when I have that particular device with me.
However, if the software works, I may just have to swallow my pride and fork out for it.
thanks again for your time
rjstep3
i have the full file with license and also the converter for Smart movie.
if u like it, i will upload here
enjoy
PS: I just have Crystal softcase for Athena. cheer
Excellent. I'de like to give it a try.
I have found that nothing works, not Lonely Cats or anything else. the lip sync is awful, the video jerky and generally not a pleasant experience.
What I take from this is that Windows Mobile is basically not a video media friendly OS - works fine with audio, not with video. For that I think you need a dedicated laptop/gadget.

i really feel curious that yr x7510 can not work with it.
actually it has the same hardwares but may be it uses another OS.
however, which version of Smart movie u use? which converter software u use? and how about the settings for the file
(to be honest, the movie that i use usually is more than 300mb and Smart movie works well)
I have tried the most basic settings, but it depends on what you mean by acceptable. I expect decent image, good soound, no skips at all, and perfect lipsync. On no WM device can I get this, but if I am prepared to compromise, then I concede that the Touch HD can deliver nearly to my exacting standards.
My conclusion is that, if I really want video on the go, watch it on laptop - better/larger image, near perfect rendering. use the WM gadget for audio only.

Hi Guys
Not long had my Touch HD and now wanting to get some movies onto it to watch whilst travelling into work.
I downloaded a trial of DVD catalyst 3, however I did a conversion and the result is pretty poor. Nothing to show off by!
I just wondered, what video settings I should be using and even the best video conversion software to be using.
Thanks

Hi,
you should really do a search, there have been many settings for many various applications posted, there is even a GUI you can use (based on menconder).
Actually getting a decent DVDtoDIVx converter is quite hard... I'd suggest Xilisoft DVD Ripper really
DVDCatalyst is the best for me. The Touch HD is listed as a device with default conversion setting and watching movies with Windows Media Player is fantastic. Images are smooth and the HD screen is fantastic. Using the HD defualt settings in DCat creates files between 450-550 megs. DVDCatalyst is well worth the $20. They offer a full featured 7 day trial version here http://www.a3vs.com/
Regards,
Gordo
I've tried a few, and the best I've found is the one johnpatcher mentions above : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=474955
Use DVDDecryptor to rip the DVD to VOBs, then VOBmerger to make the VOB files 1 big one - then run the Encoder above to make it perfect for the Touch HD. I admit its a bit of a faffing about, but it doesn't take much longer than using Xilisoft or something - which ends up with a movie with stuttery playback!
Guys,
How do I rip my existing DVD's to playback on my HD2? I would like to have good quality but a small file size Any programs that do it straight away without lots of separate processes like demuxing etc?

dvdshrink maybe?
IIRC that just shrinks DVD-9 so it can be copied to DVD-5
I think FormatFactory can do that for free. I cant confirm right now, sorry.
just use one of the many programs that does the same for Sony PSP. it works like a charm!
The best is Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate
Best quailty, and easy to use.
Awesome....
What res works best on the HD2 screen (800x480) isn't it?
Bearing in mind DVD's are 720x576?
640x480 or what else??
For dvds it would be best to rip it to it's native resolution, since they won't match HD2's res.
Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=478050
I used it on my HD, and am using it on my HD2. It makes a DVD into the perfect resolution for the HD2 screen - and a 2 hour film will turn into about 700mb.
The ripping / encoding process takes about 20 mins.
Highly recommended - and its free
I have had good results with Handbrake on my tytn (4 days to go till my hd2 arrives )
I have also used MediaCoder.
Both are free.
SPB Mobile DVD. Simple and very effective (and quick).
Thanks, I think I'll try this Mp4forHD in it's native res.
Now where are these 32gb MicroSD cards?
I'm a beginner when it comes to all the dvd to mobile software. I have downloaded Handbrake so can someone run through the instructions of how to get the dvd into a file that the HD2 recognises as a step by step guide. MAny thanks
I have pocket rar on my device. Do I copy my dvd to pc then copy that to my handheld ?. What is the easiest guide. I have a 2gb memory card. Zip wouldn't let me. Said file too big. Thanks.
be alot easier if you had the avi file or mp4 of the dvd.
You need a DVD ripper
Hello,
I dont think you'll have any luck playing DVD files directly on the device, if you can even get them there. The first thing is: You'll need TCPMP player, if you want to maintain your sanity (or you can go crazy trying to get WMP to do anything worthwhile...lol) Get it from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=565653&highlight=tcpmp
As far as getting movies onto the device, You have 2 choices:
#1 Get the films you want from Torrents, in AVI format. The ones that are sized to fit onto 1 CD (about 750MB) will work very nicely without having to do anything to them!
#2 Get a DVD ripper. You can probably find one for free, but I personally use a paid version from Wondershare. It won't work on every one, but for most it does.

Hope this helps you enjoy that big, fat screen!
Cheers!
Hi
I use DVD Catalyst to convert from DVD no need to rip first
http://www.tools4movies.com/
There is a free version or a paid version if you want more control
err... search?
this topic (and many variations) has been answered many many many times before,
there is no 'best way' you ask that here and all you'll get is other peoples recommendations which will vary wildly. leaving you possibly more confussed then when you asked!
the process remains the same (legit DVD > a means to rip the DVD to a compatible format > testing the playback for results)
you may well notice an audio delay, in which case you need a dvd ripping/converter that can allow you to set the encoding to account for this.

Thanks for the links. You are right, everybody has their own preference lol.
I have divx converter on my p c. Never used it before. So I put in my legit dvd. rip it. compress it to mp4. Then cut and paste it to my memory card And voila ?.
I downloaded pocket divx. You can download films straight to device. Is there a catch when registering ?.
I use a program called handbrake...its free google it....my videos are as clear as Transformers....i select video conversion to mpeg4 and select 100% quality...thats all u need....trust me.
