I am having serious issues rooting the HTC Hero. I have the Ukranian version, and in order to get the Android Market I need to root the phone to try this tool.
Here are some of the details on the version my phone is running:
Firmware - 1.5
Build - 2.73.495.24 146733 CL#67791 release-keys
If anyone knows an easy way to complete the rooting process on this phone - I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if someone knows how I could get Android Market it would be very helpful. I am located in the US, and using AT&T as my carrier.
Hi, see this thread I posted on modaco forums. It seems to be the same answer, so I'll link to it for your convenience.

Welcome to the forums
here is the procedure i used to root my hero
1) create a gold card (to bypass the cid check)
2) downgrade to an older htc generic rom
3) install flashrec
4) use flashrec to flash a recovery image
5) then from recovery you can root your device
there are loads of tutorials about, the best ones are on the http://theunlockr.com/ have a look there
Do you know of an easy way to create a goldcard?
there is no easy way to create a cold card, you need to use a hex editor to merge the goldcard and ur memory card, try this tutorial
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/18/how-to-downgrade-your-htc-hero-so-it-can-be-rooted/
Hi, I am new to this stuff and is about to buy a new HTC hero. I followed the link posted above and it says it is for an upgraded version of HTC hero. If I buy it new from the factory, is it upgraded? How can I check the version? If it is not upgraded, can I root it first and then upgrade it?
thank you
you can root any gsm hero using the tutorials in the android development secton and from that website i posted above, when i first got my hero and read all the steps needed i was a bit overwelmed especially comming from win mo where all u need to do is flash hard spl and ur off lol but just follow the steps one at a time and b4 u know it you'll be a pro
I did the instant root method with that app that utilizes a backdoor in the bluetooth on the phone. There's an app that's called Instant root at some google page. Then i used theunlockr guides to flash amon ra's recovery image and backed up my stock rom. From there i flashed modaco 3.0.
Now i am testing the kagudroid rom from lox.
Anyway, i would recommend theunlockr guides, as they are the easiest to follow imo.
what is rooting? And what does it do?

Hello everybody
I own a unbranded HTC Magic (which you seem to call saphire).
Now, all Magic owners that have a branded / "with google" version seem to be able to either get Donut OTA or from their respective carriers.
But I don't. HTC does not (yet?) offer 1.6 for us with unbranded phones.
Now my question is; a) CAN I install 1.6 somehow? And if yes, what would I have to do?
I'm in no way asking for a step for step solution here, but merely a pointer as to where to look for what.
Thank you so much.
Cheers.
As far as I know, T-Mobile is the only one that has pushed donut, but I'm not exactly sure. Now if you have root, you could flash a CyanogenMod Rom which is donut.

Yes... flash a Donut based ROM.
If you have a newer phone, it likely has a "perfect" SPL which you will have to deal with before you can flash an alternate ROM.
Basic steps are:
1) Get to a engineering SPL, if necessary
2) Load a new recovery ROM
3) Make a Nandroid backup of your existing "factory" ROM in case you ever need to go back
4) Flash a Donut based ROM of your choice.
If you want a solid, fast, no problems ROM I would recommend RAv1.6.3H. If you want pretty/bells and whistles kinda ROM then look at the Sense based ROMs. Eclair (Android 2.0 ROMs will be coming shortly).
Definitely the way to go if you want the new releases as they become available instead of waiting for your carrier to decide to release them.
Thank you so much.
I now have a working 1.6 on my phone. Yay
For those that, like me, don't really see through all this stuff, there are two nice instructional step by step videos for the Magic on theunlockr.com
(Only thing I forgot was to make a nandroid backup...but luckily I won't need it as everything works perfectly.)
1. get Root: http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-root-the-htc-magic-in-one-click/
2. install a rom: http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-magic/
Hi,
I've taken the decision and finally moved from Windows Mobile to Andriod by buing a HTC Magic (Vodafone UN - 32B) which is already sim unlocked...
By checking a couple of sites, including HTC, they say that a new rom has released with HTC sense, which i love it and would like to get it on my Magic..
As i've read more, its not possible for the UK yet, so we have to go with the option of upgrading the rom..
What are the 2-3 steps for doing that??(please dont tell me to read another wiki or post, just tell me what do i have to do in plain english to install a new rom(which i have found from this page)
I mean, do u need to hardSPL first, like i used to with wm6.5??and then flash the rom? and if yes, which hardSPL and where to find it..what is the procedure?? even if you cant tell me exactly, just direct me to a post for this..thats says plain the procedure of flashing etc..
Thanks for the help
What you need to do is the following:
1. Install DangerSPL
2. Root the phone (http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-root-the-htc-magic-in-one-click/)
3. Install a custom recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4029315#post4029315)
4. Find the sense ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=448_)
5. Install through the recovery.
i am trying to figure out how to install this rom on my g1 it is freshly rooted g1, i had instructions for installing rom and google addons but lost page.. can anyone plase tell me where a good guide for installing this rom is? thanks
All the info you need is here:
http://theunlockr.com/category/howto/android_how_tos/htc-g1-dream-how-tos/
Or in XDA Forums. If you are rooted you are half way there, also check your SPL (you need DangerSPL).
Good luck.
To keep it simple I would just flash one of the kangs of it like cannon202's CompleteEclair 2.2. I recommend this because this rom does not require DANGER spl. Download it HERE, put it on your sdcard, turn the phone off and apply the update and the gapps.
Just purchased (again if you will, lol) a MT4G...if you read my other thread, you'd know I'm a total noob to Android, having had an iphone since the first one was able to get unlocked. So, I'm behind the times on these.
What do I do first? What are the things I need to do? Download? What are some other sites I should/need to know about? Enlighten me, please

First of all welcome!
well the number one site for all things android is XDA Developers so you are in the right place
if you want full customization ability, the first thing you need to do is root your phone. This will let you uninstall "uninstallable apps", and change almost every aspect of your phone. after doing this, you can install a custom recovery letting you do full backups (aka, nandroid). also rooting your phone with a custom recovery will let you flash new roms, which will let you change the complete android experience. flashing will also let you upgrade to the new 2.3 Gingerbread version of android.
Everything you need can be found here (the "everything" link i keep mentioning):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866175
Rooting:
There are many ways to root. check the "everything" link for guides:
1. True Permroot and S-Off is the fullest root (what most people prefer, and also unlocks your phone to use with other companies sim cards.
2. Guide to permroot...the lighter version of the true permroot
3. visionary+, this is the easiest way to obtain permroot (identical to number 2 but is an app for easy accomplishment)
check out the guide in the "everything" link under the "rooting and s-off section" if you have trouble
Recovery 2.x.x.x (you will need 3.0.0.x if you want to use a gingerbread rom see further details):
To flash Clockwork Recoery (aka custom recovery), root your phone and download rom manager from the market, then click flash recovery. if this doesnt work, check the "everything" you need link for installing clockwork recovery through adb (adb is the command prompt delvelopment for android, the link on how to set that up is also in the "everything" link
Installing Recovery 3.0.0.x (for gingerbread/ CM7)

CM6: Android without mySense or anyother manufacturer customizations, but has many user-demanded cusomizations. This is FROYO, aka android 2.2
DesireHD/Gorilla Sens port: This a froyo, Sense UI Port, this is pretty much the rom that comes on the HTC Evo

I'm gonna follow this thread because I will be buying a MT4G soon as well... or the Vibrant...

hi there.
i got my legend 3 days ago
i got it from some guy that used it for a while, he told me that it has installed superuser whit it the phone can run normaly, including updates, reading every simcards etc....
now i've read that for legend is released 2.2 sw, but my phone is running on 2.1-update1
and dont show me new updates when i click to check for it...
so guys plss can some of you post me here a step by step tutorial what should i do
to get my phone running on froyo or gingerbread if its possible
ty in advanced
confused android user
There's already plenty of tutorials in Development / stickies, some are not stickied, so you might have to search a bit...
As for the update, best way for you check few ROMs and install via ROM manager since you are rooted... B0.7 is particulary good one
ok i manager to install cyanogenmod 6.1 on my legend works great
btw why i cant login my acc on XDA app in phone?
you can go to the market and download Rom Manager... my preferred way in managing rom. it can download rom too ;-), if you found new rom that you want to test other than the ones found in Rom Manager. download it and put it on the root of your sd card so that its easy to look for.
eg. Blay0's B 0.7 rom found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866849
or
CM7 from here. http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=nightly&device=legend
and remember to Wipe Data and Cache if its a new ROM to avoid boot loop.
you can then use "Manage and Restore Backups" to jump between roms that you've backup or rename them to not get mix-up...
Have fun ^^
