Hi Guys,
Its my first step in Android world. I have been using Windows Mobile since last 5 years (Currently HTC tytn II). I am very impressed with HTC Hero promos and customization. But before I move to Android world and buy this phone, it would be very helpful if any of you can provide answers to my following queries. Apologies, as it may be very basic questions for you but these functionalities very necessary for me as I use almost every day in my Windows phone.
Question for Android (HTC Hero)-
1. Can I sync Outlook address and calendar Android (HTC Hero)?
2. Can I open/edit word, excel and power point presentations? (If yes then does it come by default with phone like I got it with my HTC tytnII)
3. I need navigation software. (I saw one is available here http://www.alk.eu.com/. is there any other for Android like i use TomTom in my phone).
4. Any email client where i can configure Pop3, Imap or company microsoft exchange server.
5. Voice chat messengers (like i use fring(www.fring.com) for my windows phone)
Thanks in advance.
Jit
Hello there
Welcome to Android world. I don't know so much about android till now. But if you search the forum you can get all your question answered. I'm trying to help you from my little knowledge.
1. You can sync your contacts and their information from outlook.
2. HTC Hero has Quickoffice. So, I think you should be able to open/edit word, excell or powerpoint docs.
3. You can use AndNav2 for your navigation. The software is free in the Market.
4. Yes, you can configure your e-mail clients.
5. I haven't got any voice messaging service till now for android.
Hope these helps. If you have any other questions first try to search the forum .
Thanks.
there are tons of free IM apps out there.
1) Meebo (the best one)
2) eBuddy
3) IM+ (not free)
4) HelloYm, HelloAim, HelloMSN
5) IM app (built in android)
pda_crazy, as you have a HTC Tytn II, have a look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=396782 and try Android for yourself. The latest build for Kaiser/Tytn II is from the Google Ion (HTC Magic) rather than the Hero, so the Sense UI is not present. Also, wi-fi, camera and bluetooth are not working, but GPS, Android Market and Google sync are. It may require some tweaking to get the best experience on the Tytn II as different versions of the phone seem to have particular issues with calls and/or data but I am running it on my UK Kaiser (MDA Vario III) at the moment and have calls, sms, sync, Android Market and GPS working fine. Battery life is a bit of an issue, but if you can get it working it will give you a chance to download and try out a variety of Android applications before paying for an Android phone.
not so simple
I have a hero. The quick office can only open word docs, have trouble with excel . It will not edit. You can sync outlook contacts and calendar . I could make a gmail account on it but not yahoo so far. Still looking for a good explorer software in which I can keep stuff where I want. Any suggestions ?

DocumentsToGo is pretty much the only app for editing doc and xls on android. If you want a file explorer both 'Astro' and 'Linda File Manager' are good.

Hi there!
As I'm currently a Windows mobile user about to take the step over to Hero I just want to make sure that I can use my Hero at work as well.
Today I sync my work contacts and work calendar with outlook using active sync.
When syncing I don't have to enter any information at all, the sync sets up automatically. Does HTC sync work in the same way!?
Do you have to set up the HTC sync by entering server names and stuff like that, or is it just like active sync that everything is automatical!?
All answers are apreciated!

I am so lazy, i ask here, so i did not start new thread.
Few days still and i get Dream again.
The ROM in it si some Hero thing. Isn´t that mean Dream is rooted and HardSpl in it? I can go and put Cyanogens ROM in it? If i understand it right, you can´t put any other ROM in unless you first put HSpl and root?
Sorry my bad english, hope someone catch what i mean...
Edit: Root and HardSpl ok, so now Cyan and works great...
is there a way to use htc sync pc application with hd2 to sync contacs music and more
bumbing............
no...answer???
If you need to sync contacts and calendar with Outlook use Android Sync. It's still in beta so there may be some problems (it doesn't support recurrent appointments as an example).
Hello. I tested using Android Sync with the FroyoStone Series - Version 1 (07-Aug-2010) build and was not able to perform a sync as the Android Sync app would not recognize my TMobile HD2. As I understand it, the FroyoStone build does not yet fully support USB so this may be why I observed the aforementioned results.
works with froyostone sense, the newest kernel and HTC Sync 3.0.5422
Yes you can
I have HTC sync working flawless on newest MattC 1.6B.
Download and install this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726504
Reboot after install
Plug in phone and choose htc sync option.
Make sure drivers install correctly....if not you need this
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Check for update inside HTC sync
Download and Install update
Turn off sync for contacts and calenders (Kept getting unable to read from PIM message with these on and then sync cancelled)
**First sync takes a while if you have alot of file, but after that it is smooth as butta**
If anyone has a workaround for contacts and calenders please let me know as this would be handy!
Hope it works!
There is an android sync at android-sync.com for outlook sync. Seems good..

Are you sure that HTC sync is sync-ing contacts properly with outlook 2007?
In my case it leaves the phone numbers in fields "car", "Radio", "Assistant" etc. in a contact in outlook 2007.
I am using latest 3.11.55 ver of HTC Sync.
Any body with such issues?

Sorry for bumping an old thread.
This is what I am looking for, but you have to pay for it, as the trial only syncs 20 contacts.
Why should I pay for something that is still in beta and I feel it should be free, since android is free....
Or am I just being stupid? Are there any other free 'syncs' that I can use? I just want to sync my contacts....

On June 6th HTC released HTC Sync for all HTC Android Phones & HTC Smart.
I used this version to sync my Outlook 2007 contacts with my Android HTC HD2
Since I can't post links here, search "HTC Sync for all HTC Android Phones & HTC Smart" at Google.

Hey Guys,
The link came back with an HTC error. Could you please repost correct link or PM it to me? Can't find it on HTC's website either.
Thanks.
IT IS CONFIRMED
new version of HTC Sync syncs all the fields of outlook on my desktop.
Now Android is a welcome platform....
Can anyone recomend a working method for syncing my android HD2 with outlook as this is a key feature for me if i want to run android FT.
Mine syncs without any problem through my exchange account. As far as anything special to do it I use all the same settings as I did in WinMo. Works like a charm.
Are you having trouble at a specific step?
Sent from my Android HD2 via XDA app
It's not possible to Sync directly with USB as far as I know...not easily anyway.
What I did was install "Google Calendar Sync" and sync my Outlook with my Gmail account. This can sync Outlook to Gmail on a schedule so it stays updated.
Then in Android, sync with my Gmail account.
gsyncit
i use gsyncit, which syncs calendar, tasks, notes and contacts. it's not free, but very good. since this solution i didn't use winmo again...
SYncMyCal
SyncMyCal for me. Not free again but allows update to my Google account and works well. Haven't use ActiveSync or whatever it is called now for months....
Android-Sync ( PRE-ALPHA )
Exchange is the best way. Microsoft is supposed to be adding Exchange/ActiveSync to Live accounts. Some accounts already have access. Bing it.
Until you are migrated try gsyncit. , I use gsyncit for my kid's accounts and it works rather well.
Sent from my HD2 via XDA App (mattc 1.5 build)
I have the configuration below and it seems to offer syncing of contacts, calendar, and mail. However, i have a large contact database and so uploaded it to GMail to sync instead. Still, I'll look at these recommendations to see if they will work better. Right now, USB isn't working in most HD2 builds so the point is moot...
I found Android-Sync works for me. Very basic interface, but it's free ...and it actually does the job!
Guys, I use "Android PC Suite v1.3.1.7" google it.
During install it installs USB drivers so connect is possible and working.
Prog on chinese but tapping on the left upper corner and choosing third line in menu you can switch to english.
Then - Managment-Contacts-Import from Outlook. That it.
It is already released to PC Suite For Android V1.5.8.98 and you can download update here or autoupdate the old one.
http://download.pandaapp.com/?app=soft&controller=android&action=show&f_id=1892
pcsuite_for_android_1.3.1.70 would not run correctly under 64bit Windows 7. After installation, launch the EXE and then Windows says that the program shut down. Then, a process attempts to download an update which then fails with a timeout error.
pc suite thing does not work for me. i used energy android
I've confirmed that PC Suite For Android V1.5.8.98 allows me to transfer my Outlook contacts from my PC directly to my phone. My phone is running the FroyoStone build.
I was not able to transfer calendar items in this manner as I received a message that said a calendar connector was not installed.
Please note that the transfer of contacts does not appear to be a sync. During an experiment, I transferred one contact from Outlook on my PC to my phone. Then, I modified the contact on my PC. Next, I re-transfered the contact from my PC to my phone. The software detected a conflict and then created a duplicate record on my phone.
I think however that this software is a great work-around for folks who need to transfer contacts from Outlook on their PC to their phone without having to use their Google account.
Thanks to arturw for this suggestion.
I am using Froyostone V1 and Exchange syncs perfectly over the air without adding any app or widget. Guess Sense adds this? Why would you need usb sync?

HTC Sync should now work with the newer kernels. Check the git changelog.

Just tried zImage from 22.08 and HTC Sync v2.0.33 with Windows 7, but HTC Sync does not work at all. It does not see HD2.
Can someone confirm it works?

Go Android PC Suite
This is a fantastic application if you can handle the bad translations into English and the odd Chinese character. Does everything I need including Syncing APK's etc etc.
I am running [RE-BUILD][23.08.2010][mattc Leo+Froyo w/Sense 1.5b] w/1GB Data+Led+OC by Caedanne. It has been working like a treat.
Now with Android PC Suite I will shortly be able to tweak the phone and post my first Android Home Screen.
I am a convert
I set up my WM ROM with MS exchange and it imported the settings across when I booted up Haret. Therefore my Android is always up to date with the server list of contacts, calendar appts and email. It does however mean running MS Exchange which is not everyone's cup of tea.

My contacts are stored in Windows Contact Book(My Documents>Users>MYUSERNAME>Contacts) HTC Sync provided with DHD wouldn't copy them to my phone, so I just installed HTC Sync 2.xx from Legend/Hero and it worked.
It's a good point actually.
If you have your contacts in outlook, then when you install HTC Sync from the phone it will copy all your contact details to the phone automatically.
I learnt that the hard way by syncing with my work computer and having nearly 5000 contacts copied to my phone. I had to yank the power quickly and hard reset before it tried to sync it all to gmail!
Yep here to

OK, I'm a newb to Android so I'm not sure I understand what you're discussing here.
Should I install HTC Sync 3.0 from the HTC website or is there a better way to get it working? The Desire HD isn't (yet?) shown in the list of compatible handsets on the HTC website for that version.
On the included SD-cart there is the program HTC Sync 3.0. You can copy the file to your computer and install it there. Works fine and you can synchronise all the contacts in outlook.

Thank you.
I've imported my contacts already via Google so that bit is OK. Has anybody had success importing the calendar entries onto the Desire HD?
Edit: OK, I had a go and yes: it's synchronised the calendar entries. But only back a month. Is there a way to extend the range so that the whole calendar is synchronised?
Edit 2: I tried something else. I don't think HTC Sync will do what I want. I'm moving from Windows Mobile/Outlook to Google/Android so I figured I really only need a one-time synchronisation. I found that Google has their own sync tool:
http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=98563
It's not compatible with the version of Outlook I'm using (2002) so I found other software called CompanionLink:
http://www.companionlink.com/android/outlook/
They offer a free 14-day trial of their sync software with which I'm uploading my entire Outlook calendar to Google and it's syncing with my phone in front of me. That's all I needed - I don't think I want to sync my Outlook calendar in the future since I won't be using Windows Mobile again. Time will tell if I'm right.
Have a HD2 and recently got an Omnia 7 through Orange and had the following problems and was wondering if I flash to a WP7 on my HD2 will I still have the same? I returned the Omnia and still using the HD2.
I did some seasrches on the fourm but didnt see anything specific, apologies if I missed them ....
Contacts...
I couldnt find a way to trasnfer my contacts (about 300+) from HD2 to Omnia 7 - they are stored in Microsoft MyPhone (WP7 created a different account automatically), in Outlook (couldnt see a way of syncing WP7 with Outlook) and couldnt transfer via Bluetooth (didnt support Object Exchange).
Also, WP7 instisted on downloaded all 700 contacts from my Hotmail to phone - is there a way to keep these seperate?
You would have thought that MS MyPhone should enable the transfer of contact, calendar, texts etc. unless they are stored in a completely different format.
Bluetooth - does WP7, and in particular the hacked WP7 on HD2, allow for objects to be transferred via Bluetooth?
Tethering .... HTC have confirmed with me that the HD7 DOES support tethering but operators remove that functionality. The HD2 does have the capability so I am sure someone will be able to unlock this useful feature.
Sorry guys,
Have I missed something very obvious here?
Does wp7 sync with Outlook to recover contacts, calendar, tasks etc. that are there from hd2 on wm6.5?
How did everyone else copy there contacts over, surely not one at a time?
