I recently rooted my HTC Hero and had no issues with it. I was trying to nandroid backup it, but now I can't download any of the programs from the Market. I have a restore image, but I dont have any clue how to get it onto my phone. Help would be amazing, I hope I didn't brick my phone.

You haven't bricked your phone. If you are positive you have a restore image or that you've done a nandroid back up. You should be able to boot into recovery and restore you back up by:
**You should either have your Nandroid back up still on your SD card or you saved it somewhere on your computer when you did your first Nandroid back up, if the latter -- copy the ENTIRE Nandroid folder onto your SD card and proceed with the following steps.
1. Turn your phone off
2. Press and hold home+power to boot into recovery
3. Choose Backup/Restore
4. Choose Restore backup
5. Choose the back up file (labeled Nandroid)
6. Confirm that you want to restore the backup by pressing the home button.
7. Wait a while
8. Reboot your phone
And report back if you have problems.
Looks like when I go into the recovery page, the only option I have is Clear Storage, nothing about restoring

You are positive that you flashed a recovery ROM correct? Do you remember doing steps 13-19 from the guide below? Also, what resource did you use to "root" your phone and did it ever mention anything about installing a custom recovery image, if so -- what version of the recovery image do you currently have?

Make sure that you are not holding down both the Power and Home keys. You only need to hold down Home and TAP power to make it come on. Once you feel the vibrate you can let go of the Home key.
Yes, Kcarpenter's right...I wouldn't want to be held liable for deleting your data, but then again...it'll teach you a lesson and you'll never forget to make a Nandroid back up.
try and fix your market problem first, I say. Does gTalk run on your phone? if not, try creating a brand new google account, rerunning the setup app, and log in with that one. Let us know how it goes.
edit:I've seen this happen to more than one person, and it's on google's end, not yours if this is the case.
I rooted today, and I want to install damages rom. I've downloaded it, and I need some guidance. I have no idea where to go from here and don't see directions in the thread.
Anyone? eek! nervous
power off the phone
hold home and press the power button
let go of home when it vibrates
go to wipe..
wipe everything
go back to flash. flash the zip file.
reboot.
reboot takes forever.
what about a backup, should I run the nandroid backup and do a backup or a backup + ext I think it said or similar?
I want to make sure I can revert back to my 1.5 rom.
Do I also need to take all the damangecontrols zip file contents and put em on my sd card?

Good quick guide. They should all be so simple. Although I don't go the home/power way (unless adb isn't connecting). I use adb shell reboot recovery. Just my 2cents.

Yes, you need to nandroid. You only use nandroid+ext if you're using a2sd/apps2sd.
No, just put the zipfile on the SD card.
When you get into recovery (either the home+power on, or the adb shell reboot recovery method) AFTER doing your nandroid backup, then select 'flash zip from sd card' and select the ROM zipfile you put on the SD card.
KCarpenter's not kidding about the reboot. I've seen the first boot after installing DC's 2.0.8.1 take 15-30 minutes. So after flashing it, reboot and go take a shower or something.

And for people like me who hate to have to start over from scratch every time he blows up a ROM install.
Ignore post -- looks like this has already been answered.
sweet...thanks guys. Wish me luck, gonna try this!
Oh one more question, are text messages migratable? Can I save those somehow before I upgrade?

Going from 2.x to 2.x yes. I never had any luck migrating those from 1.5 to 2.1. All I ever accomplished was a lot of Force Closes and problems, so I just said screw it and stopped trying.

Just blow em away...there are a couple options but none "good".
ok DM rom is installed!
I can't set it up tho and sign into google! says I dont have a network connection! Crap!
This could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services
Thats what it says...

yeah prob temp but sometimes to get data working u have to turn wifi on for a min then the data starts to work. weird but it does. good luck
Simple question, one i didn't find a quick simple answer too.
I know the main differences between one-click root and unlocking the bootloader, and the biggest for me was the warranty. I used one-click root so just in case, I could revert back. Now my warranty is just about up, and I figure why not? My biggest question is, will it provide any benefits?
For some reason I have never been able to install themes (either update.zip files or through metamorph), I just go into an infinite boot loop. I was hoping this was the only issue. But I don't know enough to know the answer
Benefits are safer radio flashing, and if you ever **** the phone up so bad you can't boot into anything other than the bootloader, you can fastboot flash everything required to get going again.

One more little question; Should i reflash CM7 (im running the nightlies currently) when its done? I read that it will wipe all data (already got everything backed up ready to go) but I was just wondering if I would need to reflash anything right now, like CM7 or the recovery?
Take NANDroid, unlock, restore NANDroid, continue as if nothing happened.

Tons of awesomesauce I guess thats what I will go ahead and do! Thank you so very much for the quick help!
EDIT: Done, restoring the NANDroid backup now I hesitated a little bit when hitting that button though, a year of me holding back doing it because of the warranty was still making my trigger finger nervous
... And back in my rom, everything normal once again And again thanks for the quick help.
Well not so normal; I have lost my setup accounts, and everytime I try restoring a NANDroid the accounts are still gone, and there isn't an option to add in a google account and none of the google apps work. No force closes just closes the second you try to open it.
I have tried reflashing both the rom and gapps, still no good.
Am i going to need to wipe?
Certainly shouldn't do, I unlocked my bootloader in the same way and everything continued as normal.
Bit odd that you can't add your account back though, the option should be there under accounts & sync.
It sounds like what happens when you try and use CM without adding GApps
That's what I thought too. So I tried flashing gapps, nothing.
Went ahead and did a full wipe. Quite amazed so far what all android is restoring for me. Nearly all back

I have MIUI on my phone, but I don't really want it anymore. Is there any way that I can get my phone back to how it was?
Wipe and flash a new ROM. If you need to ask how, don't. It sounds like you need to do some serious reading first.
If you've managed to root, wipe, and flash MIUI, you should be capable for re-wiping and flashing something else.

Maybe he/she bought the phone with it that way. In which case, do nothing until you read read read.
They are right. You need to read for your own good.
That said, do you have a custom recovery? I would assume so. Before you do anything, make a backup in recovery.
Next, go to the development section for this device and find a ROM you really like. Learn about the differences between AOSP, Sense, and MIUI ROMs.
When you have chosen and downloaded a ROM, reboot into recovery again. Wipe cache, system, boot, and data partitions. Finally do a wipe data/factory reset. At this point all you have on your device are the bootloader and recovery.
Go to install zip from SD card and search for the ROM you downloaded. Install it. Reboot and wait. First boot always takes longer.
If boot is unsuccessful, boot back into recovery, wipe, and flash the backup you made.
Understand that I am merely trying to be helpful. I make no guarantees, but wrote these instructions to be nice. If your phone bricks, bursts into flames or implodes and creates a singularity that engulfs the planet, I am in no way responsible.
Got it?

Install new ROM via CWM. it's easy, just try. I think VU 2.39 is the best choice for you.

Yes. I just went from MIUI to Febs ICS beta 5.0.
I downloaded the ICS beta (you can pick whatever ROM you want from the Android mytouch dev section). Mounted my phone for USB storage, transferred the ICS Beta.zip to the phone then unmounted it.
Then in MIUI when you hold the power button down, it should give you the option to reboot into recovery or you can use ClockworkMod to do it.
I did option A) rebooted into recovery through power off feature in the MIUI. Then you go down to backup, make a backup. Then you wipe cache and wipe data. Go to advanced and I believe you can wipe dalvik(sp?) cache under the advanced setting.
Then you go to install from sdcard and then scroll down to your zip.file.
Then boom let it install. then when it says install complete you press the back button, click reboot and BAM you will be off MIUI and on whatever ROM you chose.
I would take everyone's advice on here to go read everything you can. I made this post hoping you have some knowledge of flashing and all that jazz. Let me know if you need any help.
What were you running before MIUI?

You missed a step. Go to mounts and storage and format /system.
Ordered my Nexus 4 on the 13th. Still waiting.
Hey
So quick question, what steps would I have to take to essentially "start fresh" but while still keeping root and twrp. I want to go back to stock or a stock-like ROM but I want to declutter the phone and backups I've made.
Any easy and efficient way to do this?

Look at step 9 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
You'll just have to do a factory reset in twrp.

Hey, thanks for the response. I'm still a little lost on what to do exactly, sorry.
So I would have to do every single thing in Step 9 or just a part of it?
Did you root the device yourself? Have you personally flashed any roms? If not, I suggest reading through the entire thread I posted. If you did that stuff yourself what doesn't make sense?

Yeah, I rooted everything myself and I've flashed like two ROMs so far (and I used the root method from the link you sent), but I just want to go back to stock or a stock-like ROM, while still preserving root and twrp. I read step 9 from the link you sent, my question is if I have to do every single thing in step 9, or do I have to do only a specific part from it, or do something in addition to step 9?
Apologies for any confusion
Forget what I said about factory reset in TWRP. Just do everything in step 9. Note that it says you might have to flash TWRP and SuperSU again. Not a big deal though.

Okay, sounds good. Just to be sure. Does it matter if I'm on Pure Nexus ROM? Will I still be able to do Step 9 without any problems?
thats right
Did I mention that I wanted it to free up space on my internal storage? I'm gonna make a full back up of my phone and transfer it to my PC, so I would want it to clear all the data as well. It will do that too right? I hope I'm making sense.

If you want to wipe your internal storage as well you'd need to follow section 10 instead in section 9, make sure you backup everything first because the whole phone will be wiped. If you skip flashing the recovery image you should be able to keep TWRP on your phone.
By the way, there's no way to preserve root when doing something like this, or when changing ROMs. Your root resides in the system partition which is overwritten when flashing the factory images or a ROM zip. It's simple to get back though, you just flash the SuperSU zip again.

Your bootloader will remain unlocked unless you deliberately issue the "fastboot flashing lock" command. There's nothing else you'd need to add/remove.

Okay I tried doing Step 10 and skipped the part where I had to flash the recovery. Everything went good, no errors or anything. Here's the thing though, even after choosing factory reset and performing the rest of the steps, my data, like pictures, videos, downloads, etc, are still there. I thought it would completely delete everything? Did I do something wrong?
