Slow Data Speeds - HD2 General

hi all, just got my hd2 and i am blown away. I thought my 2.5 year old advantage 7500 was something, this is just another universe.
i am in USA and have AT&T and mobile speedtest gives me dial up speeds, 45-70kbps
the indicator has an E and I do have a good signal.
sorry for sounding newbie, but where to start fixing this?
also, tip...
found this and it worked amazingly

Speed Up Web Page Loading Considerably
The following registry tweak will enable almost instantaneous web page loading in the web browser. It apparently enables wireless N mode but seems to work with cellular data too. Go to:
HKLM/Comm/BCMSDDHD1/Parms
11nModeDisable = Change from 1 to 0

today on a road trip I got as high as 172kbps and as low as 24kbps.

Help needed
I'm in Richmond VA and am currently only running on AT&T EDGE due to no 850 3G. I took a trip up to Baltimore and was running on H from about 20 miles north of Richmond to Baltimore.. I noticed that my speeds weren't impressive running mobilespeedtest and dslreports. I was getting between 450kbps and 750kbps consistently from Northern Virginia to Baltimore. Seems very low considering I had my wifes Iphone next to me running the speed tests consecutively and was getting 1200- 1400 kbps. My question is, do I have anything setup wrong as far as proxy settings? I haven't changed anything from my automatic configuration settings. I am running 2.10.531.7 Artemis 9.0 WWE and Radio 2.09.50.29_2. My signal shows 4 bars strong w/ no drop out. Anyone w/ any input would help greatly.

Anyone have some input?

anyone have some input?

I am on AT&T in Florida with a T9193 and so I do
get full H speeds all of the time. When I read about using Edge speeds I ran a test to see what I got. My input to you is that using Opera Mini 5 and Skyfire my speeds on Edge were very near to the H speeds for downloading a 2 meg jpg from my ftp site. Opera 9.7 and Explorer were three times as slow. Might try the test yourself.

3G vs HSDPA

Guys, I just want to confirm that my Ameo really is running on 3.5G (HSDPA). Is there some icon or way to confirm that? I see the 3G icon at the top but bandwidth test returns 1.1 mbps and I expect more from HSDPA. Or does T-Mobile need to set a switch on their end? I have the web-n-walk plan.
Thanks,
Krip
1.1 is HSDPA, not UTMS
When connected to normal 3G network my Dopod U1000 shows a 3G icon, after HSDPA network covered it will show a H icon.

hi, since you can connect to the HSDPA, can you kindly do a test for me for this problem?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302827
Am i on HSDPA....
As soon as you get higher bandwidth than 384 Kbps then you are on HSDPA regardless of what the icon on your phone reads, most networks have the feature enabled to register the "H" icon whebn you are using HSDPA but not all. The message is part of a SIB broadcast and is set as a parameter on the BTS cell that covers you - if this message is not enabled then you will only ever see the "3G" icon
As for speed 1.1 Mbps is about average if you are in a well populated area, the restriction comes mostly from the capacity available in in the BTS site serving you, most operators only have around 2x E1 (approx 4 Mbps) for the entire site so if you have more than 1 user on HSDPA then you will only get around 1 Mbps each - this dynamicaly adjusts if there is more bandwidth available for you to use. To get the higher speeds then you must be in a cell that uses 16QAM modulation (Tytn has this feature) and T-Mobile has this enabled on every site in the network but not all operators do!
normal 3G is 384Kbps download Hsdpa on T-mobile is restricted to their max network speed of 1Mbps but there are rumours of them soon going to 3.8 mbps, but the athena maxes out at 1.8 mbps anyway, so if you want full speed get a USB dongle.
web and walk plus
Im not sure if you are aware but to enable the hsdpa you must be on the "web and walk max" package in the uk.
If you are on the standard W&W package you will not benefit. I have the MAX W&W and can now enjoy the faster hsdpa connection, further more I can get faster speeds using my ameo and wifirouter linked to my laptop than I actualy get via my usb tmobile dongle.
In a nutshell, dont pay extra for the slower hsdpa dongle, not when you can pay £5 extra for the W&WMAX and enjoy wireless connection at a higher speed. I usualy use my laptop with the ameo tucked away inside my suit jacket, and often have people wondering where my dongle is!

Not true, I have both W&W added to my phone account and W&Wmax on a data card and both sims are capable of full 1mbps HSDPA in either device

Hi there, T-Mobile does not have any restrictions on download speeds apart from your service level (wnw max, plus etc) almost all wnw users can use the maximum speed available to them (apart from the newer users). The network is fully 3.8Mbps already and has been for around 9 months, within the next 8 weeks it will be 9.6Mbps capable (with a new datacard or release 6 mobile device) and within 6 months they should be around 10.7Mbps capable - most of the restrictions that users see (speeds not higher than 1.2Mbps etc) come from lack of capacity in the BTS site or transmission backhaul, the system automaticaly restricts bandwidth per user so that all users can be served at the same time, and it's not often nowadays that you only get 1 data user per BTS site!! not in built up areas......:-D
W'n'W Std = £7.50/month - No HSDPA (except on some older contracts) 1Gb FUP no tethering
W'n'W Plus = £12.50/ Month - HSDPA - speeds vary depending on congestion - Athena limited to 1,8Mb max 3Gb FUP No VOIP tethering allowed
W'n'W Max = £25? / Month As plus but with VOIP
Unless someone wants to correct me that's how I believe it stands (the old W'n'W Pro for £10/month was only available for a few months)
T do not limit speeds but the 1.8/3.6/7.2 etc are maximums which are shared so you are unlikely to ever get 'full' speed.
My 3G vs HSPDA test from San Antonio
I have a AT&T Tilt. Freshly programed with the 6.1 AT&T Rom. Minimal upgrades like color KB etc.. I have a Panasonic CF-74 connected to the PDA via USB. I ran 4 test each using 3G and HSPDA.
Here is what I found. Using the stock Internet Sharing provided on the PDA.
Active Sync 4.5.
Web site used: http://www.speedtest.net
3G test 1 2 3 4
ping 323ms 165 182 167
DL 1.33mb 1.01 1.35 1.10
Up .34 .80 .52 .24
HSPDA test 1 2 3 4
ping 292ms 189 640 113
DL .99mb .85 .72 1.01
Up .06 .31 .02 .41
It seems to me that 3G is faster.
I rebooted both laptop and pda after each test.
I connected to google once before running each test.
I waited 5 minutes after each boot up.
I used Keiser Tweak.
Nothing was syncing
Hmm,
I'm located in Singapore.
For some reason, after my HTC TP2 switch to 3G instead of HSDPA..
The Opera and Youtube speed is sooo much faster as compare with HSDPA.
When I was on HSDPA, the Opera is slow loading and Youtube a few time with reload for buffering.
Where else, on 3G.. the download speed is so much faster.
The first clip of the video start to play.. I can see the progress bar is on the
way to complete the video loading.
This proof 3G is better in Singapore with Starhub connection.
I still wonder
BTW, this is what I change in the Registry.
Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings
On the Edit menu, point to New, click DWORD Value, and then add the following registry values:
Value name: MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
Value data: 32
Base: Decimal
Value Name: MaxConnectionsPerServer
Value data: 16
Base: Decimal
Exit Registry Editor.
then softreset and do a speed test
hsdpa
I need the help. But there is no such option under "advanced network" on the htc tilt 2(Enable/Disabled hsdpa option). What programs recomended for me

works great!

Very slow HSDPA

I am connected to T-Mobile Internet (HSDPA) and I ran a speed test at www.dslreports.com/mspeed but I only got 395kbps, 0.324s latency. Why so slow?
That speedtester is rubbish - I once got 250k on wifi.

can you recommend a better one?
i've just found out that t-mobile doesn't activate HSDPA unless you call up CS and ask them to enable it. some people have been told that you have to be on web n walk pro to have HSDPA whereas others have had it added free of charge.
http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/archive/index.php/t-45508.html
but one thing is still confusing me... the H is displayed at the top of my screen when I use the data connection. and when I click on it it actually says HSDPA. what's going on?
try http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html via your laptop. much better and accurate
if you have the H - then you are def on it. If it was just 3G it would say 3G. But bare in mind that T Mobile HSDPA has been dreadful for nearly a month. It gets so bad that I am considering asking them to release me from contract for violating terms of service. I pay for HSDPA as advertised and I dont get it.
I had web&walk previously and I managed to get full speeds for a while. Once I have reduced my call plan(not data) the speeds were down to 300kbps and less. On these occations, I would still see H as the indication but sure they were capping it on the network.
reopening old thread
I've got H and my provider allows speed up to 7.2/2mbps, but for long time (few months) testing I never get speed higher than about 2.4/0.3 Mbps. I've tested on computers via USB cable and on two different locations both about 500m from antenna.
My provider say that I have all set up correctly and doesn't know why speed is 'so slow'.

Which provider? Mobitel or Si.mobil? I have Mobitel, and it's true, that it isn't always as fast as it should be - in centre of capital city...
My ISP is T2, unlimited for 10€. It's not listed on this forum settings dropdown menu

Nearly everywhere 7.2mbit hspa is a myth - the only way you can get it is if nobody else is using the celltower.
A very reliable speed test application is: http:www.mobilespeedtest.com.
The dsl.reports app (on my HD) provides non accurate results.
The more people using a HSDPA or 3G celltower - the slower your speeds get.
Trust me - I've done all the testing from a corporate perspective - HSDPA 7.2 is a myth - you'll never get that speed - its more like 3.2mb/s MAX!. On 3G the average bandwith is about 300kb/s - but only on a good day.

I'll test and report tonight, when I'm on a good HSDPA signal covarage!
yo compatriot , have you manage to test the speed yet?
With www.mobilespeedtest.com it managed to get 3Mbit downstream in Ljubljana-Vič, haven't tried Centre yet. For normal browsing and download of some small files it's ok. I'll report if I get better bandwidth!
With www.mobilespeedtest.com:
- I get a 2.37 Mbps speed test result on the 3 MB file(biggest) while connected from my mobile to a HSDPA 3.6 network which allows for a max 1.1 Mbps speed.
- I get a 2.4 Mbps speed test result from my computer while connected on a 15 Mbps ADSL - yes - I do 1.7 MBytes/sec transfers all the time - careful at the units of measurement!
- on smaller than 3 MBytes file size, the results are just random
www.mobilespeedtest.com is FAKE
The flow of the web pages has been so severely thrashed by ISP filters its not reliable to real testing anymore.
Stop.Calling.Any.Web page.A.Speed.Test.
Ping flood is designed for real measuring a line speed, but most ISPs have scripts which will ban you automatically if you sent packets faster than with a delay of 0.02 seconds. That is because is too much prone to abuse.

Is it true? T-Mobile 3g on Xperia?

Ok so I did some reading and the past and I had confirmed that there wasn't 3G bands that supported T-Mobiles 3G on the phone so I had always disabled the 3G. Well recently I got a TM506 and started tethering that to my phone/laptop while on vacation and ran some speed tests getting around 7000kbps | 7.57Mbps | 968.75KB/sec (tested on www.mobilespeedtest.com). Today I was playing with my Xperia again, flashing new roms and deciding to keep it, was frusterated that wifi was slow. Just opened up a browser and noticed it loaded rather quickly... Ran a speed test and it was roughly 7000kbps | 7.57Mbps | 968.75KB/sec which is similar to what I had on my TM506 which is offically a T-Mobile 3G phone.
Can I come to the conclusion I am gettnig 3G on the phone? It seems like it. I ran multiple speedtests and the same speeds are being produced. Can anyone shed some light and help me be able to confirm this fully?
It's pretty obvious if you have a 3G connection, as a little "3G" box appears in the top menu bar (same place there is a "E" box for an EDGE connection).
So your saying if I don't get the "3G" on top but speed tests show differently then it can't be 3G? Doesn't seem to be very accurate to me....
if your using an X1a, then yes you most likely are hooked up to tmobile's 3G..about the 3G icon not showing up..if its a custom rom..i kno in some of this roms the 3G icon is sometimes disabled so you might wanna check in advanced config to see if its enabled or not..
I am on a X1i, with Jacks 3.0 Medium Rom. Just flashed .10 radio as well. 3G is enabled as well. Hope this stays as it might become useful for others that are on T-Mobile as they might be able to get 3G now.
I get very optmistic results from mobilespeedtest.com, try a few other testing sites or even better a large download for real world speeds. If you are getting more than 380 kbit/sec you must have HSDPA and should have the H icon (unless it has been disabled)
Where are you located?
North Dallas, tx. Near frisco. I tested in Denton, Lewisville, The Colony and Frisco. All supposedly 3G speeds.
Neither the X1i or X1a runs on TMO's 3G network as TMO requires two bands for 3G to work.
Are you sure you're not just connected to wifi?
ya. wifi is turned off. And I ran a check with wifi, it gave me roughly 3mb down but with without its 7mb down... could just be the site isn't reliable... i waitng to tether to my laptop to check speedtest.org
If you're using the epc.tmobile.com APN, it's likely the speed test is being accelerated by the gateway, especially if the results are calculated by the website and not the phone.
yeah.. I finally got wifirouter and set it up with my laptop and went to speedtest.net which to me is more accurate and i was only getting ~200kb down. Better than what I had before so I'm actually happier now. Just wished it was the real 3G. :| of well.

UK 3G/HSDPA speedtest.net results

Im on Orange and getting slow laggy connections on my 3G/HSDPA connections. Wondering if if anybody else is getting the same in the UK. Im running the new ERE36B radio and the fastest speed i can get on 3G/HSDPA is typically 245k/bs downstream and 45k/bs upstream.
The main problem is loading websites usually take a very long time even with speeds that should load them up fairly quickly.
Please if your from the UK, leave your network, connect and speeds.
Thanks!
Im with Orange in the UK and noticing that 3G seems much slower on the Nexus than the Hero.
I can't be arsed to post speeds
I am on O2 and the best i've got (tested 3 / 4 times in different locations) is :
2290kbps down
1616 up
Generally get decent speeds browsing and downlaoding apps from Market (except in my house... but that is another story :/ )
In Reading on tmobile I get:
1800kbps down
555kbps up
But the coverage isn't great along the trainline.
on baseband 32.26.00.24U_4.04.00.03_2

strange as i find the ping very high on my device. sometimes 2000+ on HSDPA. Thus when browsing its very slow for a while and then sudden bursts of speeds occur. Hope a fix becomes available soon! i wasnt noticing these problems on previous radios but mayb its the the network acting up.
Those using speedtest in the UK what are your pings looking like?

HSDPA or 3G speed?... I go crazy!

I have a question regarding the HSDPA on the TMOUS HD2. I used a Diamond back in Germany and when I was in an area with HSDPA reception it was indicated by a "H" in the taskbar. Now I am using the HD2 in Baltimore. From what I`ve read there should be HSDPA available arround here (especially since I am in Downtown B`more) however I only get the 3G symbol in the taskbar. I have also been in DC over the weekend and it was the same only 3G. But I am quite sure they have the HSDPA network available there. Does that mean my HD2 doesn`t get the faster HSDPA speeds at all?
I did a speed test using mobilespeedtest.com and IE.8 teethered WiFi connection on a Windows 7 system. My results in Downtown Baltimore are: "Your speed: 1428.571 Kbps Your latency: 0.561 seconds Transferred 100 KB in 0.56 seconds". With a 4 bars 3G symbol instead of a H in the taskbar. Aren't this speeds you would expect on a HSDPA network? I am running the original stock ROM on my HD2 by the way.
I am pretty sure most carriers use 3G with hspda enhancements, aka 3.5g, which would allow the speed above 3G's cap (364 kbps). As far as why your phone states H instead of 3G, it is dependent on the phone and icon set your phone uses. Some roms will show 3G and others will show H.
where do you find the HSPDA settings? I know they were somewhere but I can't find them!
I think the 3G/HSDPA is weird on the HD2. I can sit in one place and watch it change from Edge to HSDPA without moving the phone (and sometimes a random 3g will show up).
It definitely sounds like you have HSDPA since those are some nice speeds. Mine says 'H' and I get around 780kbps, so you're double that. As long as you have a fast data transfer (and you do) I wouldn't worry =)

I was in Las Vegas Convention recently, and witnessed the power of HSPA+.
HOLY CRAP. Why can't we have that speed ALL over the world?
I was always under the impression 3G was better than H. Perhaps it's a good thing then that mine's usually H then! Where does E fit into the speed scale?
E = Edge. the slowest.
actually GPRS is even slower than EDGE
if i remember EDGE = 500kbps
GPRS = 360kbps
GRPS = 2G
EDGE = 2.5G (sorta)
3G = 3G
H (HSDPA) = 3.5G
